Best advice ever: practice, practice, practice. I've been doing insect macrophotography for almost nine years, and the photos get better the more you practice. My self-imposed challenge is to photograph insects every day in July and August. Thanks for sharing.
You’ve inspired me to get out more to shoot macro since I’ve started watching your channel! I don’t use a flash currently but am interested in learning more about using one.
Forget about flash, any flash will be the most expensive waste of money in macro photography. Get a decent tripod and head and a diffusor (there are cheap 30cm/12in folding diffusors that take little to no space and fit inside a trouser pocket). Flash guns are too unwieldy and the big diffusor will spook your subjects. If you need an artificial light source then get yourself one of the adjustable flat panel lights that are now available for videography (best ones do have adjustable color temperature between 3000-6000°K). With one of those I just photographed fire flies so that you can see their light emitted, with a flash that's impossible to achieve because they extinguish their light the moment the flash goes off.
Your macro is fantastic. I have a 90mm on an aps-c body and am not getting the sharpness I'd like or expect even with focus stacking. Nice work, Emilie.
Thank you. Have you tried an OM at your local camera store?
@@EmilieT No, I have not. Seems like it would be worth my time to do so. Thank you, Emilie.
I just bought a used omd-5 Mark I and now I am waiting for my used 60 mm macro lens to arrive in the mail. Where in a apartment complex there are so many trees, plants and flowers right outside my back door. I can't wait to take some photos. I really appreciate your advice, I am so tired of watching so many macro youtubers, that don't take beginners into consideration. Thank you for doing your videos.
Congrats on your OM-5 and the 60mm amcro. You are going to have so much fun!!
Magnificent images. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your kind words
This is what I love about macro photography...there is a whole world to photograph right outside your door.
Very similar to how I view it - a safari in your own garden. 🙂
@@davidf6326 Totally!
Exactely!
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge great video Emilie😃
Thank you so much!
Great advice. Love your videos and macro work.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing your macro photography activities. I only use an OLYMPUS EM5 camera and flash kit with a DIY diffuser for my macro photography. At the same time, the lens uses a 40-150mm F4.0-5.6 R lens attached with a Reynoc 250.
I just added the Olympus TG-6 for my macro photography. I usually carry my Panasonic G9, Olympus 60mm, Godox 350TT, and diffuser in a backpack weighing almost 3.0 lbs! I've been on bike rides or at the park with my daughter wishing I had a macro camera. The TG-6 a pocket-size camera weighing about 260 grams or .5 lbs, may not give me the highest resolution or best image quality, but it's a camera I'll have with me more often.
I'm looking at OM-SYSTEM TG-7 because I like durable cameras. I already have a durable camera but it doesn't have raw support. I'll let you know when I have the TG-7. Hopefully soon.
The TG7 is excellent. You will love it!
I have taken some fantastic macro shots with the TG-7. Enjoy yours.
@@FierceSleepingDog Are microscope mode photos full resolution images?
@@mikkosuhonenphotography I believe so, but I haven't checked. There are several macro modes on the camera (single shot, bracketing, stacking, etc).
I also purchased the light and flash guides. They are helpful in lowlight macro situations, but not required.
It's just a nice camera because it is small, rugged, and has lots of computational features. It's my everyday carry camera. I have plenty of other cameras to use, but when I want to go light and carefree the TG-7 fits the bill.
I was thinking of getting a little ring light for my macro lens, but that diffuser makes it look inadequate. 😳 Gonna have to do more research on the matter.
Emilie, love seeing your insect macros. Looking forward to photographing the many colorful dragonflies that often perch in our backyard flower garden. Enjoy!
Dragonflies are so fun to photograph! Enjoy!
Good advice peace and love
You too :)
I have a similar setup. Only difference is a Godox flash. I need to take your advice and get out.
Doing a one week challenge could motivate you and help you set good habits :)
Great video, thanks for inspiration and time to get out 😊 What technique do you use for focusing? Manual or autofocus? In manual, do you move the camera back and forth or use the focus ring as “normal”?
Thank you and great question. I use manual focus and move back and forth. With the 90mm I have start to move the focus ring too but with the 60mm macro it is all about that back and forth.
❤love your video i use 60 mm and old om 90mm macros
Merci incroyable , (hope this is correct 😊) thank you amazing ,
It is correct :) Thank you
Really enjoyed this! Would love to know more about FL700 flash and what you use for settings on the flash once you have decided f16. I am just beginning to use the AK Diffuser, 700 combo and have room for growth.
Thank you! Use TTL and let your flash and camera talk to each other if you are not focus stacking or bracketing. Most time it does a great job. You can also use exposure compensation on your flash if you need extra light. I made a video on this to explain: ua-cam.com/video/piDRkqvSP-Q/v-deo.htmlsi=ZKwfkdr9nNXUKkld
@@EmilieT - thank you so much for you assistance. I did not see you had done this video. I will certainly watch.
Coucou Emilie je ne fais pas de macro, mais avec mon 40-150 f4 5.6 et les bagues allonges je m'en sort bien☺ a bientôt
Le 40-150 est vraiment excellent et si petit!
I use a diffuser all the time. Makes a deal of difference. KR macro diffusers. Check out Kev’s diffusers.
I suppose that spiders are excluded? If so, I would strongly vote for the introduction of a spider week 🕷🕷🕷😍
Great idea! I love spiders!
Bonjour, Emile.
I forgot to share, but where do I share it? I have a photo of a baby grasshopper on a dark green background.
You can tag me @emilietalpin on instagram
Any one else wondering what camera make she uses? I'd love to know.
OM SYSTEM cameras. OM-1 Mark 1 and OM-1 Mark II for macro.
What are you saying in the first four seconds?
I have done Macro Photography for 45 years, I have NEVER used a flash for Macro Photography, you do NOT need it, I like the light to be natural !
That's your choice, others can choose differently
I just hate the limitations from using natural light. And the shadows are just so ugly. But there is no right or wrong in photography. Do whatever makes you happy.
@@RalfTenbrink I think it is wrong for nature photography to use artificial light.
There is no wrong or right. As long as YOU like what you are doing
everything else is not important.
1There are a LOT of seasoned macro photographers that would disagree with you. But, to each his own! If your happy with your images not using flash that is up to you!
