    Some problems are not meant to be solved, sometimes they are a sign you picked the wrong person and you need to move on. There is nothing wrong with admitting you made a mistake and resetting. "Solving problems" often times is really just chipping away at yourself and what you know, need, feel, and what makes you uncomfortable in order to "fit" with someone you want to fit in with but are not really meant for. And in doing that you end up stuck with this wrong person and never actually get to be with the person you were actually made to be with...

    This is operating under the assumption that both parties understood their vows and what marriage was. That both parties are willing or capable of negotiating, and that the marriage was valid and isn't either being totally undermined by one or both partners, OR that the marriage wasn't a fascade to use the other in some pyschopathic sense.

    My husband literally fell apart mentally and became an abusive alcoholic 10 yrs into our 20 yr marriage. Tried helping him in every way- went to therapy with him, and found him specialists to figure out his mood disorders too. When I was diagnosed with blood cancer he completely shut down. That was the last straw for me and so I left. And at the time I was jobless (had appts and treatments myself first year into my diagnosis). I’m sick and was treated like garbage, and I have to rebuild my life alone in my 50s. Thank goodness I now have a full time job but due to the disease I’m always exhausted. I absolutely understand.
      You think that if you followed Petersons "rules" this could have been avoided?
      For what it's worth: as a woman of 61 who's in a terrible longterm relationship of 15 years and 4 months, I can honestly say: I really, really tried. But some people are damaged beyond normal communication. Every talk that lasts for more than 5 minutes, I get:"You always want big discussions!"
      It took me those 15 years to realize my bf has partly a narcissistic personality disorder. It's his way or the highway, or rather: his way or getting shouted and sworn at. Until he nearly broke me into submission.
      I decided it's over. He has to leave and live somewhere else. He nearly broke my spirit. It's not gonna happen.
      As you say: I'm not going to spend the 20 or whatever time there's left in misery. It's more than OK to leave when there is NO intention to change, from your partner. It HAS to be a two way street.
      I'm tired of being the one locomotive for two trains.
      Take care.

My son arrived at 30 weeks. As soon as he was out of NICU I put my newborn in the car and drove a thousand miles north to home, to save our lives. My ex intended to kill me for the Life Insurance and already had planned his next wedding to his mistress. Divorce was my only option. While in theory young people should try harder and linger that advice does not apply in all cases.

    How do we deal with the stigma surrounding divorce?
    I’m in a 15 year relationship where we found the core of our problems rooted in developmental disorders that we addressed too late in the relationship.
    She lacks the ability to have emotional reciprocity and cannot perform household chores. Cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, being a home maker. I’d spend a day cleaning the whole house after working over 60 hours and she’d spend 3 hours picking one load of dirty clothes out of our bedroom corner that literally touched the ceiling.
    No time management. Late for everything. But again the biggest issue isn’t the extra load I have to carry, it’s the complete lack of reciprocation in the relationship.
    I went off the deep end, had a long distance emotional affair. I broke it off a long time ago but I still think about her and the kind of life I should’ve had instead of feeling like I’ve been bamboozled.
    I tried to work on things with her but I realize now there are things that just can’t change. I’ve had one foot out the door and thought she would grow up at some point and our intimacy would blossom. But sadly, that is just impossible because of who I am and what I need.
    She can’t do what she needs to in order for me to fall in love. And she can’t force it to happen either. But we are married and I don’t want to be someone who can’t keep my word. But I don’t want either of us to be miserable, even if she claims to be happy with me.
    Maybe id be a fool for leaving such a loyal and good woman, but I feel like I’m also a fool for marrying her in the first place. The truth came out too late after I impulsively pushed us into marriage after dating so long I couldn’t wait any more, either we get married and she straightens up or I have to go.
    She would do anything to keep herself from being apart from me. In ways it’s been unhealthy and unnatural. In ways it’s sweet and sad at the same time.
    I love her as a person, I care about her, I want her to be happy, and if she’s happy with me I want to give that to her, but I don’t know how to be happy myself in this relationship where my needs are void and I’m only here because she’s a good girl and I already said I do and she doesn’t have the mental fortitude to leave a cheater and I don’t have the mental fortitude to leave a handicapped person.

      Let me get this: you said she fails doing house chores. Does she also work to make money? You said you had an emotional affair, and that your wife doesn't reciprocate your emotional needs. What are those? I mean, is she handicapped or you actually never told her what being loved looks like for you?
      I'm not trying to accuse you of anything, but sometimes people need different things to feel loved and what your wife needs isn't actually the same as what you need.
      You said you "pushed her into marriage" - so there's the deal: she already showed you she wasn't ready for this kind of commitment and you hoped that you'd just throw her into the water and she'd magically learn how to swim?
      Anyway, things already done, the part that confused me most is you wrote that she doesn't reciprocate emotionally and, in the same text, you said: "she would do anything to keep herself from being apart from me. In ways it’s been unhealthy and unnatural. In ways it’s sweet and sad at the same time." So... what's missing besides house chores, which you said you didn't care much about?

    The theory of all of this sounds ok, however, people rarely reveal their true selves until you live with them, and even then when there is a problem I agree honest dialogue can work but only if both parties are will to (a) actually dialogue and (b) actually be honest without resorting to cruelty to prove their point because human nature will always come down on the side of protecting yourself/your feelings and when cornered into a 'frank and honest discussion' especially if there has been infidelity etc people will always try to defend there actions. Then unless you can overcome it, it can and often does become death by a thousand paper cuts - insults/backhanded compliments/criticism/on and on until - and very often there is one partner willing to actually work on problems/issues etc and one looking for an excuse to go because they really are not invested maybe they never really were and were caught up in the anticipation of soemthing that never materialised who knows so though I am sure JP and his wife didn't have an easy time with this perhaps the fact that they were both willing to participate and had a will to be together made a lot of difference - that has not been my experience personally not with people I have encountered through my life.....................and I agree with many of the comments below trust is a massive issue and not just when related to infidelity but that of course is a massive issue because of the damage it does to both parties actually but especially the person not commiting the adultery.........

    A major issue is that what passes for marriage in modern times is not marriage in any real way. It's entirely dependent on the woman's whims, or being generous, her good will. She has options to just leave, and women do 75% of the time. This would not be nearly as bad if it weren't still treated as if marriages end because men are deadbeats and dogs and run off with their secretary. Society is fundamentally broken and we're not looking to one half of humans to do anything whatsoever to address societal dysfunction.

You look good in chains in the cage in the basement and I will dress up as the executioner... Oh my. Don't threaten me with a good time. And it just gets worse from there. Jordan Peterson was correct... and women have some of these quirks as well. That is why I told my woman, Its not wedding rings its wedding chains. I am going to find a preacher who is a welder and we will be stuck together FOREVER! And when one of us croaks, they will have to throw the other one in on top in the same box and screw it shut... Together in the afterlife also.

    I think Peterson over generalizes and projects his own experience and expectations into his advice. He's also very old fashioned there was a time people needed permission from the church to even get a divorce it was a sin to break vowes and women had to promise to obey etc. Women now raised to be independent and have self respect won't tolerate extra marital affairs or domestic violence and just keep smiling and breeding and being treated like a slave especially by the modern men that want to remain immature and don't contribute anything of interest to a mature woman they will be incomparable intellectually it's not enough for the man to just have a job to provide financially if he's degrading to his spouse and can't even carry on a conversation or amuse her what motivation would she have to endure a commitment to that?

    I think the main question should be not why people get divorced, but but why woman get divorced. Man rarely if ever get divorced, and in that case a woman seriously fucked up.
    And the answer is as often complex, but the main reason is because woman are biologically destined to be only loyal to the highest level male, they could attract.
    As being not loyal or divorce has no social stigma anymore, women become financially independent and sexually liberated,there's no need to stay with a good providing, but maybe not that attraktive or boring husband.
    So basically unlimited Hyperämie is the problem of today's marriages, as most men and women are average, but average women want superior men.

    I am frankly surprised that a leading psychologist would take such a naive approach to divorce in this video. As a man, perhaps he is thinking with his rational male brain. If he has half the experience he claims to have, he should know that you can not negotiate with some one who has an irrational mind. And the unfortunate truth is that women, in large numbers, will act out in highly irrational ways. And then they will use their go to tactics, reinforcing their irrational feelings, by involving toxic lawyers, toxic girl friends, second string lovers eagerly waiting their turn up to bat, and of course the highly toxic family law system. You are an absolute fool if you think you are going to negotiate your way thru this giant mud pie. Its really sad that people don't recognize the truth, because until then, you are not fixing anything.

    • @hanselpollack4075
      @hanselpollack4075 5 місяців тому

      Love and loyalty have little to do with the “rational mind” you attribute to males. That men can barely see with only one eye is a problem. That women can barely see, but have two functioning eyes, is another. Love is simply another form of sight entirely out of the limited “box” of reason.

    Long term partnering and marriage are a construct of old-world living. It was a necessity back then. Now it isn't.
    For those who still wish to be monogamous and paired up, go for it. But it's not a natural state for humans, not any more.
    The biggest factor is that people simply change. We all do. And if you're building a life with someone and they or you change, that makes it super hard to keep going.

I am faitfull i dont have any sexual interaction with anybody i choose yo be celibate. But he has his concubine. I dont care about it either. Divorce is devastating, but living with such a horrible person is too. Hope you find your happiness.

    What is amazing is he only addresses heterosexual marriage, right? And also , he in effect insults his own clients in this rant. Maybe it is just junk theory that he has no evidence to support it. Jordan is a Frasier Crane wannabe. He is an entertainer not a psychologist. Because he sells books and videos and lectures, THAT IS NOT THERAPY. He needs to address his bad conduct in courts in the case of Case 1 Sordi v. Sordi, 2009 CanLII 80104 (ON SC) he defamed a parent in court. In the case 2 R. v. Pearce, 2012 MBQB 22 (CanLII) he tried to free a murderer. Then in the case Peterson v. College of Psychologists of Ontario, 2023 ONSC 4685, he tried to avoid taking responsibility. He also tried to interfere in a family court case in Montana, the Kolstadt case, where there was a GAG order, he unprofessionally diagnosed a minor without interviews or assessments, and tried to defend unfit parents.

    • @erachmah
      @erachmah 4 місяці тому

      I believe the intent with the videos is not to be therapy. I read his book, the shallowest one (12 rules for life) and was pleasantly surprised by its depth and spot on comments on how to get things done and try to be happy.
      Also, the things he said are, yes, directed to heterosexual relationships, maybe because he doesn't know much about homosexual ones, and/or isn't interested in them.
      Anyway, I, as a jewish woman, believe everybody has feminine and masculine traits inside themselves (we all have female and male sephiroth and that doesn't have anything to do with sexual orientation), so yeah, relationships require negotiation and each one knowing what they want and what they can give up on.

    • @stevengoldstein114

      @@erachmah So as you said he is only interested in heterosexual relationships. But that means it is a BIAS. And When he was BIASED in court he was thrown out because of it. Since it has been publicly acceptable policy for same sex marriages since 2005 in Canada, and 2015 in the US, and 2013 in the UK, and only in Israel is it not recognized. So if Jordan is going to be BIASED then he better make that up front.

    • @erachmah
      @erachmah 4 місяці тому

      @@stevengoldstein114 I think those are non related. Something being legal (a) doesn't mean it's gonna interest everyone (like, are you aware of every new law that emerges in your city? If not, it's because you aren't interested in those) or (b) make every rulling under this law right (let's remember Nazzi Germany, shall we?).
      Another thing is bias: every humanity fields are biased. Let's stop pretending. He's not addressing something that might interest you, but you are free to find people who do. Plus, most couples are heterosexual, so more people are interested in this kind of content.
      About the Canadian law that enforces gender-prefered calling: I believe it provoked the exact opposite effect it intended. JP got famous for opposing it as censorship - and I agree with him, sort of - but I'd oppose it because it backfires BADLY.
