35mm is definitely my favourite focal length; it's so versatile and can be used for nearly every situation. The main reason why I prefer it to the 85mm for street is because it captures more of the surrounding scene and for me it tells more of a story in the picture to someone who wasn't there.
Facts. My favourite lens is Viltros 27mm 1.2 pro for fuji, which on the 1.5x apcs crom comes out to about 40mm(sits inbetween 35mm beautiness and a nifty fifty) . Its a wonderful focal lenght.
I also feel that 85mm is just such an "easy" focal length to get nice shots on the streets. But 28mm or 24mm to me, gives the most iconic shots with a feeling like being right there in the scene, yet you need to practice a lot and get comfortable with being so close and compositions get a lot harder. I tried shooting a recent concert at 24mm a lot to get the feeling of being right there in the scene.
I totally agree. 24mm is a difficult and disciplined focal length, but the reward of immersion really pays it back. Shooting with a 24mm and 100% viewfinder coverage made me really aware of my corners and made it a habit to "fill the frame".
True. Telephoto lenses are the tool of laziness. All the street photography of the great photographers was with wide angles. Now that the battle is over who has the most technological camera, photography from a distance began to appear. Most of the time fronts of buildings and backs of people.
@@Lancoreh Saul Leiter is one of excellent samples of doing street photography with telephoto lens. Of course, he didn't do documentary/"i'm in the street" photos like HCB, Lee Friedlander, Robert Frank etc do (classically with 50mm or shorter). Leiter's photos looks abstract-y. Very painting-like.

As you yourself say, he represented his photography as painting, which is very different from street photography for UA-cam or Instagram, which is taking distance to have enough material to later put together a video or a reel and with it talk about equipment and the latest technology. Love that winter light in Japan. You can be out at a perfectly reasonable time of day and the sun is still nice and low. It makes me think winter is the best time for street photography in Japan for that reason. Except the sun goes down at 4.30 so maybe not 😁
Can easily make a case for shooting with either focal length. I like 28mmm and 35mm, but will say that when the situation feels like it can get confrontational, I'll switch to a wide focal length. Love street shooting but definitely feel uncomfortable when someone confronts me about taking their photo.
I don't think 85mm is particularly easy, most beginners just it wrong on the streets. Shooting street portraits and street photography is such an different thing, take a few steps back, capture more surroundings and tell more of an story rather than isolating a person and making the photo lifeless. I do still enjoy 35mm and 50mm more but it is possible to make 85mm work as a great street photography focal length.
As someone who's crutched quite hard on the 85 for street shots this was great to see the comparison. I just picked up the sigma 35 and have been struggling with composition so it was a big help seeing what can be achieved and where you position yourself in relation to a shot, allot less sniping with the wider boy. I'll have to get used to that

thank you for the effort and sharing. i leave for London in a few days and thinking of traveling with only Sony 28/2 or 35/1.8 + 85/1.8 and leaving the zooms (tamron 28-75 + 28-200) back home. actually, i am uncomfortable not taking the tamron zooms but bringing only two primes feels like an acceptable challenge. thumbs up.
Once again, amazing video. Intriguing view on street photography focal lengths, you are right, it’s nice too start on an 85mm. I actually shoot with an 85mm on a A6600 so I get a 127mm equivalent. I’m not in a big city or anything like where you shoot, I’m north of Toronto so big open spaces, I can get away with it. But I want a 35mm prime, next in my list for sure.
Loving your work. Were you using an ND when shooting wide open? Or were you stopping down like you mentioned to have more context of the image? Love the video portions as well perhaps you could go over your video settings in another video.
I only have 2 lens for my APSC camera 22mm and 50mm I love my 50mm which is about 85mm for street photography and portrait. It's my go to lens And 22mm which is about 35mm for landscapes if needed
I prefer a 35mm or 50mm when the light is bright and 85mm on cloudy days to get better separation of the subject and background when the light is flat.
Thanks! Yes it does a lot. Once you get your Jpeg it is much harder to recover shadows and highlights when postprocessing your images. If you have a very contrasty scene you can still shape it and change it a lot if you shot RAW
The Sony 35/2.8 ZA is the best autofocus street lens in the lineup, IMHO. It looks like a toy and people are absolutely not scared of it. I actually have that Sigma and find it way too big, even on my A7c. But a manual lens is where I want to be, tbh. The Asahi Pentax 28/3.5 SMC Takumar is my personal favorite. Zone focus means relying on autofocus is a non-issue, which is preferable in the street. You can set it to F8 and hyperfocal distance, lock in shutter at 1/160, 1/250, or 1/320... Then just roll ISO to control exposure. Makes bokeh fallback impossible as a fringe bonus for those who are inescapably drawn to it.
@@leixo Yeah, I'm a big fan. In the case of vintage glass, you get the bonus of kinda "art directing" the style as you stop down the aperture too. Plenty sharp at F8 in most cases, then all kinds of cool hazing and fidelity breakdown as you head towards F2.8 and below. Way more fun than the clinical results of modern high quality glass IMHO. Though I like both options.

Additionally , do you shoot so wide open when people aren't the main subject? I range focus, so personally stay stopped below 5.6. Thoughts on range focusing with modern digital cameras, when AF is so darn good?
I am buying a z5 (full frame)this week since it is on sale for $999. For street photography and maybe some indoor photo shots such as bars, would you go for a 28mm 2.8 $279 or a 35mm 1.8 $699 as your first lens?

And I say this as a street photographer, who shoots with a 35mm, and often close up 😅. My opinion is: shoot whatever gets you the art you desire. My art just happened to focus up close often
I've done street for several years purposefully, and since the day I got my first camera incidentally, which is about 30 years... I'm old, heh. I find myself choosing the lenses for the street much like I would in any other genre I shoot. I don't use a 35mm to shoot football games, or macro lenses for dance recitals. On a busy street I'll shoot wider. On a quieter street with less people I'll reach out a bit with zoom or 85mm. If it isn't a busy street area and I'm in the mood to interact with people more, I'll slap on a 35 or 55mm and take time with people. Thanks for the video. Good stuff!

When COVID came I graduated more to 85mm from 35mm. Keeping my distance. Now I am again using my 35mm for street. It great to have a choice, but I only ever take one lens on each occasion as each as discussed in this VLOG, has its own characteristics to be considered.
I like to go out with a 50mm and a teleconverter. You can can get close and personal while walking around with the 50 or find a spot to sit and catch your breath for a minute and throw on the teleconverter without having too many missed opportunities because something happened juust a little too far away for the 50 alone.

Enjoyed this video. I am an amateur and am fortunate to have a variety of primes and zooms, For the longest time, I mostly shot with the zooms. They are powerful tools for changing “terms” of a situation in pursuit of must-get images. On the other hand, when one is just shooting for the experience, using primes has expanded my understanding. It gives me a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of a given focal length, and the strategies required to adapt it to various situations. Ultimately, making me even better when I do use zooms. In particular, I have started using my 85mm f1.8 more. It gives me the ability to get images from a distance; even in fairly low light. That is useful when there is action on the street; i.e.emergency vehicles rolling or people interacting but are not close enough for a image with a 35mm to make sense; i.e. the only person who knows what you were looking at in the scene would be you. 🙂
35, 50, 85, 135...the final image is what matters most. But, yes, 35mm is more of a challenge. However, if you want to single out one person, you have to get quite close with a 35mm (.7-1.5m), which requires some courage.
I love street photography but I don't love the gatekeeping. I believe that there are a multitude of attitudes we can take toward the practice of street photography. Yes, there is a documentary or photojournalist tradition, and yes there are some other traditional viewpoints that inform the practice, but street photography should not be limited by these things. I think you have to pay attention to these traditions and conventions and the whole history of street photography if you're going to present your photographs as street photography or if you're going to interact with people who are the public face of street photography, but I also think that there's a lot of beauty in someone just taking a camera and going out to capture images from public life. And they don't have to become confrontational or abandon normal social distance or any of the things that some of the extreme street photographers push. We are photographing the external surface of a shared reality. There's a lot of ways to do this. (My personal approach is to focus on the art and the shapes and to use human subjects in those environments, but that's because of my personality. I wouldn't tell other people to imitate my style.)
I prefer to shoot streets with two prime lenses and two bodies. I normally use a 35mm f/1.4 on one SLR body and an 85mm f/1.4 on a second SLR body. I use a 35mm f/1.4 and a 90mm f/2 on a Leica rangefinder.
i just feel like watching digital street photographers kinda doesnt have the same magic as film... its so easy to just spray down photos and that need to be more judicious and all thew mystery is gone. its so much more impressive on film
Dont mind about bokeh with street photography... you want context and to tell a story, not a wedding like portrait, the best street photos had been shot around f8
Why is it I find street photography boring these days? It's so hard to find excellent street Photography these days, Just snapping what's in front of you in a fraction of a second is meaningless if there is no association or creative thought! Is not even artistic. What's it all about? No theme - no story - nothing! I suggest you have a good think about what you are trying to say in using people and buildings in front of you! And what are the ethical implications of photographing people and capturing them in embarrassing and unflattering photos? You guys may shoot 500 photos in a morning and expect to find 5 good images you like! With some luck! That's not real street photography or art! But you are trying hard, getting out and good photos are taken because you are out there snapping them. So keep practising your hobby.
I no longer called this type of photography as street photography, i prefer call it snapshot photography. But hey, now we live in digital era, if Famous street photographer still alive or active today i think some of them will do content like this. I think i remember a legend photographer said in interview he could take hundreds of rolls in a week, and only pick 5-10 photo for exhibition or book. Basically all photographer do the same thing, whats different is now the medium is become more diverse.
I understand how you feel, but that's almost the exact reason I embrace the challenge of street. I do the kind of "snapshot" photography for organizational promo occasionally. So my mind has to shift impetus from just getting clear, appropriate shots for organizations, to hitting the streets and creating something that I feel is artistic, authentic, revealing, telling... On the street, it becomes my story. The more often I do it and the more varied my personal approach, the more I learn to look at all of my photography with a more understanding, critical eye.
Twinkling Star: Yeah street photography is so lame right. It’s way easier than creating a fake situation with a model that you can control their actions, emotions, wardrobe, environment and take all the time you need to get your settings exactly the way you want them. Lmao. And by the way…A lot of street photographers shoot film so your 500 shots for 5 keepers argument is not really valid either. I’ll never understand why some of you get snarky if people don’t do what you like personally. Isn’t diversity in art what it is all about? Anyways. I hope you take this comment constructively. I don’t shoot weddings, but I still appreciate a good wedding photo when I see it.
I use both focal lengths. I think the “getting closer” problem is more related to the photographer experience level. I use 85mm to get what I call impossible shots, e.g. a woman carrying their children and crossing a dangerous avenue, two guys arguing in the middle of a busy road, etc. There are too plenty of boring “get closer” scenes, you know, the typical people in your face snapshot that every street photographer need to do (to prove something to themselves). I agree with other comments here about street photography cliches happening over and over. I think the best way (talking by years of experience) is to shot the focal length that delivers your idea. At the end the most important thing is how well trained is your vision, you know, visual culture, art education, color theory, your visual narrative in general.
The fact that an 85 is considered "easier" because you don't have to get in people's faces should not be seen as a negative at all. I personally find the photographers that get right in people's faces when they shoot to be annoying. One should be a fly on the wall, not a bull in a China shop.

I too have difficulty using 24 or 28mm focal length. There are two reasons. These focal lengths force me to get closer to my subjects. This makes me uncomfortable. These are good focal lengths for shooting in parades or a demonstration. The second difficulty is I focus on my subjects too much and loose track of my edges. Never used a long lens for street. Saul Leiter used to do this. Seems a little creep to me. I am firmly in the 35 or 50mm camps. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

How do you balance not interrupting your surround/subject vs taking your time getting the right composition?
What automatic mode(s) were you guys set in?? .. aperture priority or any other?
I shoot 99.9% of the time in Aperture Priority
For this kind of thing some context would be nice: is this on FF, ASPC or MFT?
Generally when not precised, focal length are always expressed in FF terms.

Manual lenses are (most of them) cheap, sharp, great build quality, really good glasses and are small, i really love them

I've done street for several years purposefully, and since the day I got my first camera incidentally, which is about 30 years... I'm old, heh. I find myself choosing the lenses for the street much like I would in any other genre I shoot. I don't use a 35mm to shoot football games, or macro lenses for dance recitals. On a busy street I'll shoot wider. On a quieter street with less people I'll reach out a bit with zoom or 85mm. If it isn't a busy street area and I'm in the mood to interact with people more, I'll slap on a 35 or 55mm and take time with people. Thanks for the video. Good stuff!

When COVID came I graduated more to 85mm from 35mm. Keeping my distance. Now I am again using my 35mm for street. It great to have a choice, but I only ever take one lens on each occasion as each as discussed in this VLOG, has its own characteristics to be considered.
I like to go out with a 50mm and a teleconverter. You can can get close and personal while walking around with the 50 or find a spot to sit and catch your breath for a minute and throw on the teleconverter without having too many missed opportunities because something happened juust a little too far away for the 50 alone.

Enjoyed this video. I am an amateur and am fortunate to have a variety of primes and zooms, For the longest time, I mostly shot with the zooms. They are powerful tools for changing “terms” of a situation in pursuit of must-get images. On the other hand, when one is just shooting for the experience, using primes has expanded my understanding. It gives me a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of a given focal length, and the strategies required to adapt it to various situations. Ultimately, making me even better when I do use zooms. In particular, I have started using my 85mm f1.8 more. It gives me the ability to get images from a distance; even in fairly low light. That is useful when there is action on the street; i.e.emergency vehicles rolling or people interacting but are not close enough for a image with a 35mm to make sense; i.e. the only person who knows what you were looking at in the scene would be you. 🙂
35, 50, 85, 135...the final image is what matters most. But, yes, 35mm is more of a challenge. However, if you want to single out one person, you have to get quite close with a 35mm (.7-1.5m), which requires some courage.

I love street photography but I don't love the gatekeeping. I believe that there are a multitude of attitudes we can take toward the practice of street photography. Yes, there is a documentary or photojournalist tradition, and yes there are some other traditional viewpoints that inform the practice, but street photography should not be limited by these things.
I think you have to pay attention to these traditions and conventions and the whole history of street photography if you're going to present your photographs as street photography or if you're going to interact with people who are the public face of street photography, but I also think that there's a lot of beauty in someone just taking a camera and going out to capture images from public life. And they don't have to become confrontational or abandon normal social distance or any of the things that some of the extreme street photographers push. We are photographing the external surface of a shared reality. There's a lot of ways to do this. (My personal approach is to focus on the art and the shapes and to use human subjects in those environments, but that's because of my personality. I wouldn't tell other people to imitate my style.)
I prefer to shoot streets with two prime lenses and two bodies.
I normally use a 35mm f/1.4 on one SLR body and an 85mm f/1.4 on a second SLR body.
I use a 35mm f/1.4 and a 90mm f/2 on a Leica rangefinder.
It's strange to shoot streetphotography and use open diaphragm like 1.4, but it's up to everyone

i just feel like watching digital street photographers kinda doesnt have the same magic as film... its so easy to just spray down photos and that need to be more judicious and all thew mystery is gone. its so much more impressive on film

Why is it I find street photography boring these days? It's so hard to find excellent street Photography these days, Just snapping what's in front of you in a fraction of a second is meaningless if there is no association or creative thought! Is not even artistic. What's it all about? No theme - no story - nothing! I suggest you have a good think about what you are trying to say in using people and buildings in front of you! And what are the ethical implications of photographing people and capturing them in embarrassing and unflattering photos? You guys may shoot 500 photos in a morning and expect to find 5 good images you like! With some luck! That's not real street photography or art! But you are trying hard, getting out and good photos are taken because you are out there snapping them. So keep practising your hobby.
I no longer called this type of photography as street photography, i prefer call it snapshot photography. But hey, now we live in digital era, if Famous street photographer still alive or active today i think some of them will do content like this. I think i remember a legend photographer said in interview he could take hundreds of rolls in a week, and only pick 5-10 photo for exhibition or book. Basically all photographer do the same thing, whats different is now the medium is become more diverse.

I understand how you feel, but that's almost the exact reason I embrace the challenge of street. I do the kind of "snapshot" photography for organizational promo occasionally. So my mind has to shift impetus from just getting clear, appropriate shots for organizations, to hitting the streets and creating something that I feel is artistic, authentic, revealing, telling... On the street, it becomes my story. The more often I do it and the more varied my personal approach, the more I learn to look at all of my photography with a more understanding, critical eye.
Twinkling Star: Yeah street photography is so lame right. It’s way easier than creating a fake situation with a model that you can control their actions, emotions, wardrobe, environment and take all the time you need to get your settings exactly the way you want them. Lmao. And by the way…A lot of street photographers shoot film so your 500 shots for 5 keepers argument is not really valid either. I’ll never understand why some of you get snarky if people don’t do what you like personally. Isn’t diversity in art what it is all about? Anyways. I hope you take this comment constructively. I don’t shoot weddings, but I still appreciate a good wedding photo when I see it.
On the plus side, no one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to look at photographs you don’t like. Feel free to spend your time elsewhere.

I use both focal lengths. I think the “getting closer” problem is more related to the photographer experience level. I use 85mm to get what I call impossible shots, e.g. a woman carrying their children and crossing a dangerous avenue, two guys arguing in the middle of a busy road, etc. There are too plenty of boring “get closer” scenes, you know, the typical people in your face snapshot that every street photographer need to do (to prove something to themselves). I agree with other comments here about street photography cliches happening over and over. I think the best way (talking by years of experience) is to shot the focal length that delivers your idea. At the end the most important thing is how well trained is your vision, you know, visual culture, art education, color theory, your visual narrative in general.

The fact that an 85 is considered "easier" because you don't have to get in people's faces should not be seen as a negative at all. I personally find the photographers that get right in people's faces when they shoot to be annoying. One should be a fly on the wall, not a bull in a China shop.

I too have difficulty using 24 or 28mm focal length. There are two reasons. These focal lengths force me to get closer to my subjects. This makes me uncomfortable. These are good focal lengths for shooting in parades or a demonstration. The second difficulty is I focus on my subjects too much and loose track of my edges.
Never used a long lens for street. Saul Leiter used to do this. Seems a little creep to me. I am firmly in the 35 or 50mm camps.

An interesting video, but please stop talking about a 'wider' focal length. It's either a shorter, or longer focal length, or a lens with a wider/narrower angle of view.
