  • This is a report in video form. The crew continues its work as outlined below.
    Clive Sparks: Restoration Hangar Manager
Clive discusses the reassembly of the front tire on FM 104 and the change in plans for the tires. Clive, Dan Hilton, Doug Bolton, Bill James and Chris Stewart did the reassembly.
    Duncan Stewart: Bulkhead
Duncan continues his work on the bulkhead. Work is now being done on installing the new bulkhead’s stiffeners.
    Gary Powe: Canopy
Gary discusses inputting a drawing of the canopy loops into his computer and generating a computer model showing the three wooden loops and their positioning. Then Gary takes a laser level reading on the front fuselage. Adjustments were made to bring the front fuselage into level in order that the level readings at the canopy level will be accurate. He then hammer-forms a new flange, for what he thought was a missing bracket, to hold the wooden loops to the top of the front fuselage.
    Bob Brown: Canopy
Bob and Vernon Lappi work on the steel tubular canopy frame and the steel tubular portion is at the proper height helping with the accuracy of the longitudinal line going back to the wooden section. Work included installation of the sliding windows on the side and the escape hatch on the top.
Gary then discusses the position of the flashing on the top sides of the fuselage. It differs from one side to the other. Because of this, thickness and length must be added to the small loop where it fits into the mount brackets.
Clive, Gary, Bob and Vernon all glue and mold the extension on the small loop.
This report is 16 minutes long.

Great to see such talented people doing amazing work. When I was involved in the hangers I've met a lot of very fine members.

Very nice work! I appreciate the coordination among the men working on the canopy frames. They are working as a team. Impressive attention to authenticity.

Great job guys love seeing this work being undertaken… the amount of things that volunteers achieve eh? Imagine what the world would look like without volunteers ?

really interesting folks. Couple of questions regards the cockpit canopy, why did they use wood for those hoops and also ther use of steel frames at the front? Wouldnt aluminium have been sufficient throughout? Im just curious surely the canopy, appart from the slipstream, I cant imagine it would need to have had steel, its not load bearing or anything is it?

That is a question we have tried to find an answer for and to date have no answer. One thought is it might have something to do with the radio. If you find out let us know.

@@rvjs100 ahh yes good point there was a DF loop under the back end of the canopy … yes didn’t think of that of course any ferrous or non ferrous material in the proximity of the DF loop would create major problems… so that leaves us now with just the steel section at the front … perhaps that is just to reinforce … I suppose if aluminium was used there would be a high risk of cracking or fatigue ?

I have hunted around but cannot find the answer to my question . Are you restoring to flying or for a display? Thank you

At this time we are trying to get it so we can taxi it. After that stage we will have still do a lot of work before it will be air worthy.
