Patriarchy hurts all, and thus we are all victims in my humble view. Follows that men being less comfortable seeking mental health is a societal truism/stereotype in large part driven by the societal norms and expectations of the patriarchy that still rules our collective psyche. Hopefully we can get to a place where mental health is destigmatized for all, including for men most as we seem to agree agree there is clearly an unacceptable barrier to them receiving the treatment they need. Just as we desire men to be allies for women’s/nb’s struggles, so too must it work in the opposite direction

This argument of “broken homes” (when what they really mean is anything divergent from the nuclear family) always makes me roll my eyes - my parents made each other and me miserable for most of my life. The notion of divorce was never even an option for them because of how religious they were.
On the outside, everyone would see us as a normal nuclear family when in reality everyone in the home was depressed, stressed, extremely mentally ill, and abusive to one another. Quite frankly, had my parents gotten divorced I feel like I would’ve had a WAY better childhood and WAY less trauma and mental illness that cripples me in my everyday life. Growing up, I saw some of my friends had the same issues- and I also noticed my friends with divorced parents actually seemed to be getting on better emotionally or even the same than me and my friends that lived in nuclear households.
On that note; I lived in a very affluent area. Little to none of the people around me were struggling in any financial way. Sorry for my rant- this “broken home” argument just really gets on my nerves because there’s a LOT of rampant mental illness and abuse that go unnoticed in a normal nuclear American family 🤦‍♀️ It’s ridiculous and just distracts from the real issues at hand.

There is also no such thing as 50/50 splits with spending on kids how would you even quantify that? Whose health insurance is the child gonna be on and whose paying co-pays and emergency bills? If the kid wants a a sleepover /party/event over on a night one parent is supposed to have them how is it resolved and what happens when the kid picks a side even if it’s due to something benign like mom lives closer to their best friend or dad lives closer to whatever after school activity? How will the parents remedy that without making the child sacrifice for the sake of 50/50?

It sounds like this caller is going through a rough patch and as many do within his ideological leanings, he has projected it into his ideology and policy advocacy. The premise is kind of absurd though and we can't just make up facts and agree it is probably true just because it sounds good or makes clear sense in our own heads, wherever our heads may be. What he was suggesting and proposing is just rather unhelpful in any case. If you truly wanted to reduce divorces or broken homes, you would solve one of the major problems that leads to them. The major problem that leads to this is financial in nature. You would provide services, subsidies, or direct checks to families. You would alleviate a lot of these responsibilities. This caller I can almost certainly say would oppose any meaningful solution at the government level to do any of this. A libertarian world would look more like the Gilded Age or just a lot just a lot like it does today just with our issues being multiplied. The Libertarian ideology is just an ideology that people grasp to who have not done the required critical thinking excercises to try and critique it. A libertarian government would be a hellscape where masses of people, much larger than even now would live in abject poverty and 'the free market' would turn into monopolies and trusts and many unethical practices that lead to consumers being far worse off. Nobody serious and nobody with any intellectual fortitude thinks a libertarian government would be a good idea, or that it would even sustain itself.

The fact that this person is arguing from a place of post-hoc custody disputes says they aren’t coming from a place of wanting to solve the actual root of the problem. And then goes on to say those programs should be limited. In other words, normal Libertarian logic

I'm a man who was raised by a single mother and I hear the argument this guy makes a lot. Its just a weird bonkers scapegoat to me. On a personal level, knowing who my father is, there is no reality where I would have been a better person had he been an active figure in my life. A good father figure can be an invaluable resource, but it is not a prerequisite to raising a good person. Other factors are much more important when it comes to guiding your children in that fashion.
