I'm from Brazil and listen to PJ for almost three decades. I'm a huge fan, listening to them, recorded or live, is like a spiritual experience to me.

As with Alive, we find the true story that Eddie found out that the person who he thought was his father was actually a step father and that his actual father had died. He met his real father but his mother had introduced him as a family friend. Eddie did not get on with the step father and so it was a pain he carried with him into adulthood. This song is a dirge or release of sadness and pain of not being able to grieve for his dad's death. For the band they were still getting over the death of Andrew Wood their lead singer from their previous band Mother Love Bone, so it fitted for them too. I am from the UK. Pearl jam weren't as big here but still fill stadiums. Grunge came in when indie/britpop was big in the UK so there wasn't much transatlantic crossover at that point

So glad you’re diving more into Pearl Jam. This was such a powerful performance. You may find it interesting to watch another performance of the same song, over 20 years later. It’s from a concert at Wrigley Field in 2015, and it shows how so many of their fans feel very connected to this song. Here’s the link: ua-cam.com/video/Y2vwLBkA4vg/v-deo.htmlsi=ouCcvRULfMHvy5yj
There are a lot of people who will say the first few albums from PJ were amazing, but the group was never as good after that. Don’t listen to them. You can’t be around for over 30 years, with such an intense, devoted fan base, without quality music. PJ is touring again this year, and they’re still selling out arenas around the world. They’re one of the best bands, ever, to see live. Yes, they’ve matured, have different lives now, are family men. They’ve evolved, and so has their music. And that’s what I love about Pearl Jam. Who wants to hear the same music for 30 years.
    Enjoy the journey.

When I first heard this song in 1991/92, I thought the same thing. A nice drone, meditating album ender and ode to his father who passed away when he was young.

This song has always been a favorite of mine. It makes me think of my relationship with my father. "Oh, dear dad. Can you see this now? I am myself like you somehow." We never really spoke about anything of substance. I always wanted to have meaningful conversations but that never happened. My dad had such a hard time expressing any emotion about anything. The line, "I wait up in the dark for you to speak to me" always gets me. "Release me" always makes me think about breaking out of that prison of suppressing emotion. I saw Pearl Jam perform this sing at Madison Square Garden a few nights before my father passed away. There are so many things I wish I could have talked to him about. He just wasn't emotionally capable of expressing his thoughts to me. I can't listen to this now without crying and thinking about my father.

Ed has said writing songs helps him heal from dark stuff. He was initially surprised that so many people related to them. I love how he has always shown his emotions and vulnerability through his lyrics, performances and sometimes even interviews. After he sang “Release Me” for the first time (during practice) he ran out of the room and down the hall because he felt so “torn up”. The bass player went looking for him to make sure he was OK.

I love this. I've been a Pearl Jam fan since the beginning and I love seeing someone truly appreciate what they do. I do hope you'll move into their more recent music as well. Lots of people listen to these early songs but not as many go on to their newer stuff that is so good. They have a brand new album this month and from what I've heard so far it's going to be a great one.

I'm a Pearl jam long time fan from Indonesia, lots of follower here, but unfortunately PJ has never played in Indonesia. I was fortunate to see them twice in Europe, very religious event, almost like going Hajj to Mecca for me 😊

Just a tip for everyone, with the exception of Pearl Jam who is the greatest live band of all time, do not select a live performance for your first time listening to something. Get familiar with the studio recording, then check out live versions.
Okay, great reaction video. Eddie is the greatest song writer of all time. Music is subjective, and yes its just my opinion. Eddie is the GOAT.
