This. The injustice is not that Korea treats white people okay, but that people face discrimination. I don’t entirely agree with her comment as skin tone is not so much a deciding factor as overall beauty and ‘status’. I know people from Turkey with darker skin who get treated much better than white people because they fit the beauty standard more and/or had better jobs. I'm Pakistani with olive brown skin, green eyes, and an aqualine nose. I was complimented for my eye color and nose but looked down upon for my slightly darker skin. I didn't care because I didn't find any of them attractive. They felt like factory robots to me with no personality or fun in them. They were getting eyelid surgery, nose surgery, chin surgery. They wore long sleeve shirts in the summer. I was bored in Korea so I left.
Oh so if someone doesn't find you attractive you look down on them, guess what I'm white and in my neighborhood I'm looked down upon because my neighborhood is Hispanic and Arab and east Asian do I call them robots no because that is their decision to not find me attractive I'm not going to be upset because that's shallow.
I think she was being interviewed and so she was answering a question. I don’t think she goes around noticing that she’s being treated better than one person in a situation. This is a standard that’s an every country not just in Korea light skin no matter where you live, is always promoted as beauty that doesn’t make it privilege. It just means that’s the way it is unless society changes what beauty stands for it will never change. If a society would change and promote beauty within every color, and when you have a much better world, but that’s just not the way our world is unfortunately. And it’s no one‘s fault, except the people who made it that way.
She's very attentive, someone that will be a true alli to a friend. She spoke up about it because she took note being around her friends who do not fit into their standards because its more than beauty. I'm a black man living in Korea for over 5 years. I don't get treated particularly bad here. I have mostly good experiences. But it's 100% clear as day white people who fit their beauty standard do get treated the best here.
Black Africans usually have a good taste of fashion and attitude which can be cool for Asians. I have seen this. It's usually the Indian type dark skin that don't dress and behave in uncouth manner that get treated with disgust.

I’m a male Korean and I can’t say that’s not true. Especially the elders. They look at all the foreigners as if they are saying “why the hell he/she’s doing here” but when they see colored people it gets worse. Their whole aura says “get the hell outta here.” and they look down people other than white people. Many youngers do that too, though not to that extent. I didn’t realize my generation still do that until my work friends from latin american countries said to me that I have an open mind on the way I think, on the way I treat foreign people. It’s a shame we Koreans still discriminate people by their skin color in the age of globalization.

That doesn't mean that other topics, points of view or issues have been left out to only target Koreans. To be honest not until coming on here and seeing these posts have I heard about racism or even classism in Korea. I still love the people, want to learn the language and know more about the culture. I just know what to expect if I do encounter it upon my visit there. Doesn't mean Koreans have been shunned.

Quite correct!! I visited Korea on several occasions, the fairer your skin is, the better your treatment! They are an extremely elitist culture. The more money you have, the fairer and prettier you are the better they will treat you! I love the food and culture, but quite racist towards darker skinned individuals. My family is from Thailand/Laos and there’s also a culture of vanity for “white skin”. My mom constantly told me as a child to stay out of the sun or I would get too tan. She used to bleache her skin a lot too. Family members would praise me if I were pale or criticize me because I got a summer tan being outside doing kid things. Now I have to protect my daughter from this. I’ve already heard statements from older people in my culture circle, about how she’s too dark (like her dad who is tan) and it’s too bad she didn’t get my fair skin. Her nose is also a cute button but several older family members constantly ask me or tell me to pinch her nose so it will have a nicer bridge. My mom brags that my nose is nice cause she pinched it when I was a child. It upsets me so much because we are actually the same ethnicity, my husband and I- but we still get graded by our skin color and body features. My daughter happens to look like her dad, tan skin and round nose, and I wouldn’t change a thing. I love my people and value my heritage, but like every other culture, there are some toxic parts of it that need to stop.
OMG, this is exactly the same in the Philippines. I think there is a movement in the Philippines to appreciate darker skinned Filipinos and to not obsess over white, pale skin. I think this is lead by the younger generation so it will take some time to matriculate through the society.

The vanity for "white skin" is a very Asian culture in general. At least from what I can understand part of the logic WAY back in the days was if you had white skin meant you were rich as you didn't have to work out in the field getting a tan. Ofc that only works when you apply to people that live in your region. Shift region where people are just naturally darker skin it make no sense but that comparison carried on. Why the East Asian country generally look down so much on the South East Asian countries.

She's right. I was treated decently but my South East Asian friends had it pretty bad. In comparison, when we went to Japan, people were happy to learn more about where me and all my friends were from (not just our nationalities but our ethnicities). Twice in Korea I came across guys thinking I was Latina. When I told them I'm just black, they'd say 'but you look latina' and 'you're mixed, that's why you're pretty'. I would be a bigot if I painted all Koreans with the same brush, but there is a definite hierarchy when it comes to foreigners in Korea
As a black man who lives in Korea, I get told the same shit by Korean women. "Oh you look mixed" "oh you got double eyelids so you look part Asian" "your skin is lighter".

If you consider "black" to be only sub-Saharan African, I'd think you are not only black. If you're a black American, you are most certainly mixed with other races, probably European.
Colourism sadly isn't only a korean issue and tbh I don't think it will ever go away. But I have huge respect to my korean friends who treated me with respect.
Colourism has to do with the colour of your skin not your race, it's a subtle difference. If you're white with pale skin you'll be treated better than a korean with darker skin. If your skin colour coincides with your race, like being black, that's rough buddy. If it was racism then the skin colour wouldn't matter as much, a korean with a tan would get a pass and a white person who's as pale as snow wouldn't.

Colorism is part of South Korea's history...just like in the Philippines...there is a perception that when you have white glass skin, you are of noble origin. In short, being white is considered being wealthy. Meanwhile, colored or tanned skin are said to be those working under the sun since they are situated in the middle to lower class. It's elitism that later on bloomed to prejudice and discrimination..these biases were set as the beauty standards that are very much amplified in today's media. South Korea as a homogenous country would likely lean on to these standards for a very long time

Many Japanese women even come to Korea for surgeries(there used to be a Korean to show about a famous plastic surgeon hospital and it’s clients and most of them were either Chinese, Thai or Japanese).

Yeah I’m Viet with very tan skin and my trip to Korea was the first and last time because of the blatant colorism and bias. Treated white Americans/europeans in our tour group with extra care while they ignored me and my family at the initial glance (as the only SE Asians within the group). I dare say even Japan wasn’t openly biased in my experience. If they were, at least they didn’t let it show. They still treated us with common decency with the others. It’s funny how Koreans look down on dark-skinned people and ethnicities but are known as the cosmetic surgery empire to get SE Asian features (double lids, eye shape, lips, etc.).
I felt this when I came to India, after living here for so long I can say that it's really bad, even amongst themselves. I'm African Asian, my skin's colour is a bit lighter compared to my African friends and when I'm with them, i get preferential treatment but when I'm with someone more fairer, they get the preferential treatment. It really sucks and all we want is to be treated as humans, not a commodity. This strongly affected my self esteem and mental peace😔

That’s due to historical reason. Not because of being racist. Rich wealthy class Koreans since 1000years ago have had fair bright complexion. We didn’t even have to care about the race issue only until recently. I feel offended that so many people bring in their own lens of racism and apply it thoughtlessly and unfiltered to the Korean society. I feel attacked and feel like they are more racist. Yet Koreans are aghast when news pops up showing Koreans abroad subjected to bias treatment and, sadly, even hate crimes in the US. Kdrama depicts Koreans in a better light than they are as a society in terms of kindness.

No It's wrong. South Korean has a pride as an asian. I think Koreans focus on money rather than race. foreigners from richer countries can be well treated than foreigners from poorer countries. Forexample, Black Africans and African Americans may be treated differently And West European and East European may be treated differently in Korea. But no matter how poor a foreigner's country is, if he has a lot of money, he is treated well in here. Koreans tend to think that foreigners who are economically insecure are illegal aliens. So they are lil afriad of them. And Koreans don't like Japan bcuz of history but..Japanese has a better image than Chinese in Korea. Bcuz they think Japan is richer country so people can be nicer.
However, the story changes when we talk about the international marriage market. Koreans tend to marry East Asian or SE asian or Russians who have a more similar culture than Western Europeans, who have a completely different culture. However, Korean women prefer guys from richer country but Most Korean women who marry Americans also tend to marry Korean-Americans.. They are asian so they feel more comfortable with asian naturally.
One of my korean friend said he wanna date White girls and he dated white girls a lot but now, he fell in love with Thai girl and he's gonna marry her this month.

As an Indian girl myself, my skin tone is naturally very pale with natural Greenish eyes and light Brown hairs. I'm So fair that most people think I'm either a Greek or an Israeli. So guys, trust me when I say this, all the NOT all the Indians are 'BROWN' in color. You'll see most North Indians being very fair in complexion but down the south they may be tanned but some southerners being fair too. We should rather celebrate this diversity, that God made us so different from each other 🎉 P.S-All skin colors are beautiful ❤
Honestly everyone will have a different experience. I’m black and I lived in Korea and I never had a bad experience. The people were so kind to me and went above and beyond to make me feel welcomed even strangers were so nice. The only time my skin color was brought up was by my students. They would be using a brown marker and would be like “look this is teacher” but they were 6 lol and my first graders loved me and would always compliment me and were fascinated about how I changed my hair every week and they would ask their moms to try to do their hair like mine 😂 I’ll definitely cherish my experience in Korea 🥰
beauty aside, they don't even care about other race (i think). my sister's friend (Southeast asian) went to korea. if i'm not mistaken she tried to get off the bus or tried to get in but she slipped and fell. and surprisingly not a single soul are helping her to get up. there are lot of people there lining to get into the bus as well. and then a place like bar or club no foreigner are allowed like why tho? the level of discrimination and racism in korea is really concerning. and i'm wondering korean are really worshipped by most foreign. especially in their music industry like those boy/girl band thing. 'k-pop' i believe that's the term. like imagine they prolly think "look at all these garbage cheering for us, they're gross at least we got rich because of them"
I'm black and was really catered to in Korea and I stayed at 5 star hotels and people on the street were so helpful especially when we were confused. We were also stopped multiple times and told we were so beautiful (by older people too!) It was quite nice. :) For reference, I'm tall, curvy with a baby face
My daughter lived in Seoul for 1and half year. She is mixed black and white beauty. She is fluent in Korean language. She was treated differently when among students or among citizens of Seoul or out of the town. People were usually curious but mostly polite. She still has Korean friends but mainly the ones who already lived abroad and have experienced other cultures.

She sensed curiosity, but not racism per se. When she had time off from school, she traveled a lot by bus or train, visiting villages, small towns, mountains, monasteries and shrines, seashores and islands. In Busan, she was even invited to a classmate's family for the holidays and was received really nicely by the whole family, especially by their grandfather. When I let my daughter go so far into the world, I was very afraid, but luckily she met only good people, for which I am really grateful to this day. I understand what you were trying to convey. We are not so shy here, but we are just ordinary people, similar to people in your country. We like simple things, nature, good food, drink, friends, music, dancing and singing. This is not just Korea but in lots of Asian countries, they tend to favor light skinned people. I have heard Vietnam used to do that (not sure it applies today but that's what I've learnt from family members). One explanation is that dark skinned people remind them of poor rice laborers who couldn't protect themselves from the sun while noble people could stay inside to do more intellectual jobs.
Omg! She speaks the truth!! I remembered attending my first Kpop concert in L.A. Me and my two friends plus one of the friend’s older sister went shopping in Koreatown. Note this, in this group, I am more fair-skinned than the other three. I also wore a black bodycon dress, a pair of black booties, and false lashes. Every store we went to and everywhere we went, I was greeted by all the store owners and Korean people! They even spoke Korean to me! None of them paid attention to the other three girls (even though I was the one with no money and was not particularly shopping for anything). I was treated so well while the other girls were neglected! I wondered why until this day! I knew it was something that had to do with looks!

True. I've been living in Korea for almost 5 years now. White people get treated so differently compared to me and my other non-white friends when it comes to things like jobs, making friends, dating, etc. It's so hard sometimes 😭

Thanks for gently pointing out that colorism, as well as racism are harmful mentally, and emotionally to those that suffer from it (moreso and often physically of course), but also to those that benefit from it. Both are harmful diseases fabricated in order to divide us, based solely on the amount of a pigment-melanin produced by a protein-tyrosine found in all human skin.
In Asia this is more present than Europe, idk if this kind of standard started in China, Japan, Korean or even in Europe, but now it's everywhere in countries from asia... If you go to poor countries from Asia it's even more, like Philippines, Malaysia etc...People will treat you like a king.

I love korean culture , their food and kpop . From kdramas i fell in love with korea but the more i know about korea , the more i am scared to visit korea even tho i really want to . I am brown skinned and obviously darker than koreans . I know not everyone is bad and there are bad people in every country and culture but colorism , beauty standards, how korean public treat others in general really makes me sad.
Having been there in 2019 as a black girl, I had an amazing experience and I just want to go back. I wasn't there for really long, and there are some thing that may bit seem so good especially colorism and classism but just because white people are treated better doesn't mean others are treated badly. It's more like they will treat you well but they will get the extra mile for white people or really light skinned people. I personally had a great experience and I am not light skinned at all more like milk coffee with some extra chocolate in there. Still am pretty dark especially in the summer. But I never had anyone avoid me or refuse to help me when I asked, if they don't speak English they would seek someone who could do so to help me, and I had downloaded a translation app so that I could communicate with those who didn't speak English which immensely helped, I would give them my phone with my question and they would type a response and it would translate it and that's how I got by. I really have no negative experience with the people as someone who went there on vacation, I hope I can go back soon and spend like a month there or something, hopefully next year ^^
While it is 100% true there is racism in Korea as a black person I was fortunate not to experience it on that trip. However, it does exist we know that for sure. It also exists here in the USA yet here we are existing and living day to day. No matter where you go this ridiculous stuff exists but there's also good enjoyable things too. If you want to go to Korea go and enjoy it! Don't let racism stop you from enjoying the positive things.
If youre going there with friends/family, sure. Alone? Idk about that, your choice. When I went there with my family I had mixed feelings. I enjoyed their food and traditional culture stuff, but hospitality wise, they werent the best. I stayed at a 5* hotel for about a week. When I used my "comfy" clothes, they look down me. No service from staff. Then when I dressed up, I kid you not, all the staff served me. It was really weird, funny, but also unsettling to me. It made me thought how much they look down on anyone who doesnt look "rich". I was then told as well of the social-work culture there, specifically as to why Koreans love Lotte department store so much and why its everywhere. Apparently is because everybody who works, are socially pressured to buy luxurious items in accordance to how much they earn. So, if someone gets a promotion = maybe increases their wage like way higher, it means they should buy evern more luxurious brands. Like gucci, chanel, etc. Just hearing that confused me to the core. Another was taxi drivers. The way they drive and speak were often rather aggresive/rude. Some were reallyyy nice though, but most of them were just unpleasant.
Thats why I love Greeks, who are incredibly warmhearted. I have 3 asian friends now visiting Greece for the first time at this very moment and are blown away by the countey and people. And even say, i have to think about this. Meaning. How they have always dealt with people in their current day lives, but how Greeks have made them feel so over abundant everywhere, they litterally are affected by it in the most wonderful way. And this is to me the most important thing in life. Im lucky with my looks, but im mostly happy with kindness, and warmth. And nowhere do I feel as much warmth as there in Greece. It matters a lot because where I come from people only focuses on status, money, individualism, and yet are so so poor inside. I view by my current views that many Europeans and many Asians to be very poor. Nothing in life matters more than warmth and love from people. In the end when you die, you dont count your money. You are only happy that people are around you. And that is why its important to have wonderful warmth around you at all times. It makes you truly happy

Yes that true, i can says korean still look at colorism for there beauty standard. ever since i was live in korea seoul city for 10 years. i observed some my foreigner friends who live in korea, they got a racism and discrimination. and in indonesia, i live here now. there are respect each other. people so frendly. especially indonesian like a foreigner or called BULE. and they dont make somebody down by racism so far. i dont have any discrimination here.
As a Hispanic/ Mayan looking American from Guatemala, I was treated pretty well in Korea. Most of the time I was in Seoul and in my tourist parts but even outside of those places, every Korean I met was very polite
As a Korean, I will tell you more detailed information. 1. Koreans focus on the nation more than the race. People from rich countries may be treated differently than people from poor countries. The reason is that they fear the possibility that people in poor countries might be illegal immigrants. A white man from Eastern Europe and a white man from Western Europe, or a black man from Africa and a black man from America, are treated differently in Korea. 2. She said that her friend from Turkey was treated worse than her because of her race. But Koreans can't tell the difference between Turkish and European looks. Northern Europeans, Southern Europeans, Middle Eastern Asians, Hispanics... They all look alike to Koreans. 3. A person with a beautiful appearance, regardless of race or country, receives attention and love from many Koreans. Even if it does not meet the beauty standards of Korea... And the appearance of the woman in the interview is considered very beautiful in Korea. 4. Caucasian skin is not preferred in Korea. Caucasian skin has been described as rusty skin and red skin by Koreans since the Joseon Dynasty. The biggest reason white people have a good image isn't because of their skin. 5. The reason why the image of Europeans is good in Korea is that because they are from rich countries, Koreans feel that they are less dangerous. And in many Hollywood movies, white people are portrayed nicely. So their image is good. That's all. And East Asian countries, including Korea, have historically never been colonized by European countries (this is a very rare case on Earth), but have historically had many problems with other Asian countries. So Koreans feel threatened by East Asians more than whites. White people are not on the radar of Koreans. And in Korean society, the actual upper class is Korean, not white. Most whites are ordinary English teachers. White people are not a threat to Koreans. 6. 50 million people live in Korea. Everyone's tastes are not the same. Some men like whites, some men like Southeast Asians, some men like blacks. this is so natural... 7. If you are good at Korean and know about korean culture perfectly. Many of koreans give you a lot of love.. where you are from isn't more important than that..
I simply don’t understand why you don’t have more likes than you deserve. This is clearly well said. That just means people don’t care to read long decent comments. They are hasty to judge based on their own lens. I’d like to add that, historically, Koreans preferred fair and bright skin because that indicated noble, well-educated, rich class that do not get much sun exposure, therefore, keeping their skin tone brighter than others - since almost 1000years ago when there hardly were any different race around living together in the peninsula. But people just think off of what they’ve seen and experienced - and that’s why it makes not much sense for Koreans. Like we don’t, nor did we ever have to, think about the issue of racism, anyway. I totally agree with you. Thank you for your kind comments. Korea is one of the last countries on the planet to enter the global world, so they still have fear and ignorance toward foreign countries. I understand exactly what you are saying because I have lived in many different countries in the past. I made many good friends in Thailand and the Philippines and I was very impressed with Southeast Asian's attitude for life. Koreans have always paid more attention to the situation in East Asia, where there are threats from North Korea, China, and Japan, and they tend not to think deeply about other continents such as Europe and Southeast Asia. And their superficial images in Korea are mostly derived from News or Hollywood movies. Koreans were probably vaguely afraid of the possibilities that people from developing countries are more likely to engage in illegal activities for money. but I think that this wrong prejudice should be eliminated. I know there are more good people than bad people in there. as you said, developed countries also have many social problems.. And the good image of developed western countries in Korea has deteriorated considerably thesedays due to numerous news about their violent crimes against Asians during the pandemic. That's what I've noticed. There's a weird thing where white ppl are well received especially if their pretty, but not ppl that are darker. Even other asain ppl. Even when I listen to kpop I u don't see many trainees that are darker and if they were they get their skin bleached ans u notice that their so pale now. And lord forbid u are another race and ur not white or asain. It doesn't pass. Only trainees I've seen are asain or white or both. It's interesting for sure.
A lot of places in Southeast Asia have beauty standards that involve fair complexions. Some beauty product lines i.e. Shu Uemura sell skin bleachers/lighteners to lighten your complexions. In Indonesia, they have a word for white people: "bule" (bool-eh). So to me, im not surprised even if I've never been.
Meanwhile, European people want to get tanned. I too think it's generally healthier to have a bit of tan. And that's coming from a pale Asian-looking dude by the way.

This. The injustice is not that Korea treats white people okay, but that people face discrimination. I don’t entirely agree with her comment as skin tone is not so much a deciding factor as overall beauty and ‘status’. I know people from Turkey with darker skin who get treated much better than white people because they fit the beauty standard more and/or had better jobs. It’s mostly about whether you fit the beauty standard, you’re from a country that is affluent, and you work in a high status job. I'm Pakistani with olive brown skin, green eyes, and an aqualine nose. I was complimented for my eye color and nose but looked down upon for my slightly darker skin. I didn't care because I didn't find any of them attractive. They felt like factory robots to me with no personality or fun in them. They were getting eyelid surgery, nose surgery, chin surgery. They wore long sleeve shirts in the summer. I was bored in Korea so I left.

I think she was being interviewed and so she was answering a question. I don’t think she goes around noticing that she’s being treated better than one person in a situation. This is a standard that’s an every country not just in Korea light skin no matter where you live, is always promoted as beauty that doesn’t make it privilege. It just means that’s the way it is unless society changes what beauty stands for it will never change. If a society would change and promote beauty within every color, and when you have a much better world, but that’s just not the way our world is unfortunately. And it’s no one‘s fault, except the people who made it that way.
She's very attentive, someone that will be a true alli to a friend. She spoke up about it because she took note being around her friends who do not fit into their standards because its more than beauty. I'm a black man living in Korea for over 5 years. I don't get treated particularly bad here. I have mostly good experiences. But it's 100% clear as day white people who fit their beauty standard do get treated the best here.
Black Africans usually have a good taste of fashion and attitude which can be cool for Asians. I have seen this. It's usually the Indian type dark skin that don't dress and behave in uncouth manner that get treated with disgust.
Well, there whole billion dollar kpop industry is a bunch of Korean men and women imitating black american men and women so they can at least show us some respect.

I’m a male Korean and I can’t say that’s not true. Especially the elders. They look at all the foreigners as if they are saying “why the hell he/she’s doing here” but when they see colored people it gets worse. Their whole aura says “get the hell outta here.” and they look down people other than white people. Many youngers do that too, though not to that extent. I didn’t realize my generation still do that until my work friends from latin american countries said to me that I have an open mind on the way I think, on the way I treat foreign people. It’s a shame we Koreans still discriminate people by their skin color in the age of globalization.

That doesn't mean that other topics, points of view or issues have been left out to only target Koreans. To be honest not until coming on here and seeing these posts have I heard about racism or even classism in Korea.
I still love the people, want to learn the language and know more about the culture. I just know what to expect if I do encounter it upon my visit there. Doesn't mean Koreans have been shunned.

I remember a different interviewer who was interviewing Korean men in Korea and he asked them something along the lines of “Would you rather date someone who is okay in looks but has a nice personality, or someone who is gorgeous but has a horrible personality?” I kid you not, verbatim one guy answered “As long as she’s hot, she can be a b*tch and I wouldn’t care.” I was so shocked.

Update: went to Seoul and while yes everyone looks very beautiful, I also felt very beautiful and embracing myself as I was felt so liberating! Ngl, it was hard sometimes when everyone was so beautiful but comparison really is the thief of happiness ❤️🩹

Favouring lighter skin is not unique to Korea. It exists all over the world, including Africa. Infact you can even see it in renaissance paintings. This is not a Korean issue, but a societal issue.
Quite correct!! I visited Korea on several occasions, the fairer your skin is, the better your treatment! They are an extremely elitist culture. The more money you have, the fairer and prettier you are the better they will treat you! I love the food and culture, but quite racist towards darker skinned individuals. My family is from Thailand/Laos and there’s also a culture of vanity for “white skin”. My mom constantly told me as a child to stay out of the sun or I would get too tan. She used to bleache her skin a lot too. Family members would praise me if I were pale or criticize me because I got a summer tan being outside doing kid things. Now I have to protect my daughter from this. I’ve already heard statements from older people in my culture circle, about how she’s too dark (like her dad who is tan) and it’s too bad she didn’t get my fair skin. Her nose is also a cute button but several older family members constantly ask me or tell me to pinch her nose so it will have a nicer bridge. My mom brags that my nose is nice cause she pinched it when I was a child. It upsets me so much because we are actually the same ethnicity, my husband and I- but we still get graded by our skin color and body features. My daughter happens to look like her dad, tan skin and round nose, and I wouldn’t change a thing. I love my people and value my heritage, but like every other culture, there are some toxic parts of it that need to stop.

OMG, this is exactly the same in the Philippines. I think there is a movement in the Philippines to appreciate darker skinned Filipinos and to not obsess over white, pale skin. I think this is lead by the younger generation so it will take some time to matriculate through the society.

The vanity for "white skin" is a very Asian culture in general. At least from what I can understand part of the logic WAY back in the days was if you had white skin meant you were rich as you didn't have to work out in the field getting a tan. Ofc that only works when you apply to people that live in your region.

She's right. I was treated decently but my South East Asian friends had it pretty bad. In comparison, when we went to Japan, people were happy to learn more about where me and all my friends were from (not just our nationalities but our ethnicities). Twice in Korea I came across guys thinking I was Latina. When I told them I'm just black, they'd say 'but you look latina' and 'you're mixed, that's why you're pretty'. I would be a bigot if I painted all Koreans with the same brush, but there is a definite hierarchy when it comes to foreigners in Korea
As a black man who lives in Korea, I get told the same shit by Korean women. "Oh you look mixed" "oh you got double eyelids so you look part Asian" "your skin is lighter".

Colorism works because the bias towards lighter skin is found among Koreans as well.
Colourism has to do with the colour of your skin not your race, it's a subtle difference. If you're white with pale skin you'll be treated better than a korean with darker skin. If your skin colour coincides with your race, like being black, that's rough buddy. If it was racism then the skin colour wouldn't matter as much, a korean with a tan would get a pass and a white person who's as pale as snow wouldn't.

Pale skin has been the beauty standard for many centuries in Korea, so I hope people don’t relate this solely to discrimination against colored ppl!
I appreciate these videos as they speak out against this scourge. So it seems most people see themselves through the eyes of the European s and are perpetuating that same ideology in their culture. It is sad that we cannot love our skin and ourselves without comparing.
Colorism is part of South Korea's history...just like in the Philippines...there is a perception that when you have white glass skin, you are of noble origin. In short, being white is considered being wealthy. Meanwhile, colored or tanned skin are said to be those working under the sun since they are situated in the middle to lower class. It's elitism that later on bloomed to prejudice and discrimination..these biases were set as the beauty standards that are very much amplified in today's media. South Korea as a homogenous country would likely lean on to these standards for a very long time

In my area, a person who makes fun of another person's face, features, and color, we consider him as an ignorant person who looks down upon the form/face [ "made by The Creator"] .rather than the consideration for character and Morals of a Person.
Part of why she's treated so nicely is because she's pretty. And beauty matters 1000% in Korea. Every day.

I really like her honesty. I definitely felt the difference here in Korea when I used to go out with my friends vs people from countries that fit more into their beauty standard. Sadly, the “pretty priviledge” is really present.

Yeah I’m Viet with very tan skin and my trip to Korea was the first and last time because of the blatant colorism and bias. Treated white Americans/europeans in our tour group with extra care while they ignored me and my family at the initial glance (as the only SE Asians within the group). I dare say even Japan wasn’t openly biased in my experience. If they were, at least they didn’t let it show. They still treated us with common decency with the others. It’s funny how Koreans look down on dark-skinned people and ethnicities but are known as the cosmetic surgery empire to get SE Asian features (double lids, eye shape, lips, etc.).
I felt this when I came to India, after living here for so long I can say that it's really bad, even amongst themselves. I'm African Asian, my skin's colour is a bit lighter compared to my African friends and when I'm with them, i get preferential treatment but when I'm with someone more fairer, they get the preferential treatment. It really sucks and all we want is to be treated as humans, not a commodity. This strongly affected my self esteem and mental peace😔

That’s due to historical reason. Not because of being racist. Rich wealthy class Koreans since 1000years ago have had fair bright complexion. We didn’t even have to care about the race issue only until recently.
I feel offended that so many people bring in their own lens of racism and apply it thoughtlessly and unfiltered to the Korean society. I feel attacked and feel like they are more racist. Have you ever thought of it that way? I guess not. Too bad.
Yet Koreans are aghast when news pops up showing Koreans abroad subjected to bias treatment and, sadly, even hate crimes in the US. Yet they themselves treat darker skinned people visiting Korea the same way. It shouldn't be a surprise. They even treat their own Koreans who are more tan with slurs. Kdrama depicts Koreans in a better light than they are as a society in terms of kindness.

No It's wrong. South Korean has a pride as an asian. I think Koreans focus on money rather than race. foreigners from richer countries can be well treated than foreigners from poorer countries. Forexample, Black Africans and African Americans may be treated differently And West European and East European may be treated differently in Korea. But
no matter how poor a foreigner's country is, if he has a lot of money, he is treated well in here. Koreans tend to think that foreigners who are economically insecure are illegal aliens. So they are lil afriad of them.
And Koreans don't like Japan bcuz of history but..Japanese has a better image than Chinese in Korea. Bcuz they think Japan is richer country so people can be nicer.
However, the story changes when we talk about the international marriage market. Koreans tend to marry East Asian or SE asian or Russians who have a more similar culture than Western Europeans, who have a completely different culture. However, Korean women prefer guys from richer country but Most Korean women who marry Americans also tend to marry Korean-Americans..

im asian and in my recent trip there with a friend who is dark skinned, we had a restaurant lady literally sigh in our face upon entrance and threw the menu at us without a word. after ordering not a single word from her too. we didnt thank her upon receiving our food and left in silence after paying

As an Indian girl myself, my skin tone is naturally very pale with natural Greenish eyes and light Brown hairs. I'm So fair that most people think I'm either a Greek or an Israeli.
So guys, trust me when I say this, all the NOT all the Indians are 'BROWN' in color. You'll see most North Indians being very fair in complexion but down the south they may be tanned but some southerners being fair too. We should rather celebrate this diversity, that God made us so different from each other 🎉

Honestly everyone will have a different experience. I’m black and I lived in Korea and I never had a bad experience. The people were so kind to me and went above and beyond to make me feel welcomed even strangers were so nice. The only time my skin color was brought up was by my students. They would be using a brown marker and would be like “look this is teacher” but they were 6 lol and my first graders loved me and would always compliment me and were fascinated about how I changed my hair every week and they would ask their moms to try to do their hair like mine 😂 I’ll definitely cherish my experience in Korea 🥰

beauty aside, they don't even care about other race (i think). my sister's friend (Southeast asian) went to korea. if i'm not mistaken she tried to get off the bus or tried to get in but she slipped and fell. and surprisingly not a single soul are helping her to get up. there are lot of people there lining to get into the bus as well.

I'm black and was really catered to in Korea and I stayed at 5 star hotels and people on the street were so helpful especially when we were confused. We were also stopped multiple times and told we were so beautiful (by older people too!) It was quite nice. :) For reference, I'm tall, curvy with a baby face
I guess it all depends on experience.
My daughter lived in Seoul for 1and half year. She is mixed black and white beauty. She is fluent in Korean language. She was treated differently when among students or among citizens of Seoul or out of the town. People were usually curious but mostly polite. She still has Korean friends but mainly the ones who already lived abroad and have experienced other cultures.
I was also treated well. I when out on the town and in shops and restaurants. I never worked there so that could make the difference

She sensed curiosity, but not racism per se. When she had time off from school, she traveled a lot by bus or train, visiting villages, small towns, mountains, monasteries and shrines, seashores and islands. In Busan, she was even invited to a classmate's family for the holidays and was received really nicely by the whole family, especially by their grandfather. When I let my daughter go so far into the world, I was very afraid, but luckily she met only good people, for which I am really grateful to this day.
I understand what you were trying to convey. We are not so shy here, but we are just ordinary people, similar to people in your country. We like simple things, nature, good food, drink, friends, music, dancing and singing. Our children admire your children and learn the Korean language to understand what your children are singing about.😃

This is not just Korea but in lots of Asian countries, they tend to favor light skinned people. I have heard Vietnam used to do that (not sure it applies today but that's what I've learnt from family members). One explanation is that dark skinned people remind them of poor rice laborers who couldn't protect themselves from the sun while noble people could stay inside to do more intellectual jobs.
Omg! She speaks the truth!! I remembered attending my first Kpop concert in L.A. Me and my two friends plus one of the friend’s older sister went shopping in Koreatown. Note this, in this group, I am more fair-skinned than the other three. I also wore a black bodycon dress, a pair of black booties, and false lashes. Every store we went to and everywhere we went, I was greeted by all the store owners and Korean people! They even spoke Korean to me! None of them paid attention to the other three girls (even though I was the one with no money and was not particularly shopping for anything). I was treated so well while the other girls were neglected! I wondered why until this day! I knew it was something that had to do with looks!

I appreciate your insight and honesty. Thanks for gently pointing out that colorism, as well as racism are harmful mentally, and emotionally to those that suffer from it (moreso and often physically of course), but also to those that benefit from it.
Both are harmful diseases fabricated in order to divide us, based solely on the amount of a pigment-melanin produced by a protein-tyrosine found in all human skin.
In Asia this is more present than Europe, idk if this kind of standard started in China, Japan, Korean or even in Europe, but now it's everywhere in countries from asia... If you go to poor countries from Asia it's even more, like Philippines, Malaysia etc...People will treat you like a king.

I love korean culture , their food and kpop . From kdramas i fell in love with korea but the more i know about korea , the more i am scared to visit korea even tho i really want to . I am brown skinned and obviously darker than koreans . I know not everyone is bad and there are bad people in every country and culture but colorism , beauty standards, how korean public treat others in general really makes me sad.
Having been there in 2019 as a black girl, I had an amazing experience and I just want to go back. I wasn't there for really long, and there are some thing that may bit seem so good especially colorism and classism but just because white people are treated better doesn't mean others are treated badly. It's more like they will treat you well but they will get the extra mile for white people or really light skinned people. I personally had a great experience and I am not light skinned at all more like milk coffee with some extra chocolate in there. Still am pretty dark especially in the summer. But I never had anyone avoid me or refuse to help me when I asked, if they don't speak English they would seek someone who could do so to help me, and I had downloaded a translation app so that I could communicate with those who didn't speak English which immensely helped, I would give them my phone with my question and they would type a response and it would translate it and that's how I got by. I really have no negative experience with the people as someone who went there on vacation, I hope I can go back soon and spend like a month there or something, hopefully next year ^^

While it is 100% true there is racism in Korea as a black person I was fortunate not to experience it on that trip. However, it does exist we know that for sure. It also exists here in the USA yet here we are existing and living day to day. No matter where you go this ridiculous stuff exists but there's also good enjoyable things too. If you want to go to Korea go and enjoy it! Don't let racism stop you from enjoying the positive things.

If youre going there with friends/family, sure. Alone? Idk about that, your choice. When I went there with my family I had mixed feelings. I enjoyed their food and traditional culture stuff, but hospitality wise, they werent the best. I stayed at a 5* hotel for about a week. When I used my "comfy" clothes, they look down me. No service from staff. Then when I dressed up, I kid you not, all the staff served me. It was really weird, funny, but also unsettling to me. It made me thought how much they look down on anyone who doesnt look "rich".
I was then told as well of the social-work culture there, specifically as to why Koreans love Lotte department store so much and why its everywhere. Apparently is because everybody who works, are socially pressured to buy luxurious items in accordance to how much they earn. So, if someone gets a promotion = maybe increases their wage like way higher, it means they should buy evern more luxurious brands. Like gucci, chanel, etc. Just hearing that confused me to the core.
Another was taxi drivers. The way they drive and speak were often rather aggresive/rude. Some were reallyyy nice though, but most of them were just unpleasant.

Thats why I love Greeks, who are incredibly warmhearted. I have 3 asian friends now visiting Greece for the first time at this very moment and are blown away by the countey and people. And even say, i have to think about this. Meaning. How they have always dealt with people in their current day lives, but how Greeks have made them feel so over abundant everywhere, they litterally are affected by it in the most wonderful way. And this is to me the most important thing in life. Im lucky with my looks, but im mostly happy with kindness, and warmth. And nowhere do I feel as much warmth as there in Greece. It matters a lot because where I come from people only focuses on status, money, individualism, and yet are so so poor inside. I view by my current views that many Europeans and many Asians to be very poor. Nothing in life matters more than warmth and love from people. In the end when you die, you dont count your money. You are only happy that people are around you. And that is why its important to have wonderful warmth around you at all times. It makes you truly happy

As a Hispanic/ Mayan looking American from Guatemala, I was treated pretty well in Korea. Most of the time I was in Seoul and in my tourist parts but even outside of those places, every Korean I met was very polite

As a Korean, I will tell you more detailed information.
1. Koreans focus on the nation more than the race. People from rich countries may be treated differently than people from poor countries. The reason is that they fear the possibility that people in poor countries might be illegal immigrants.
A white man from Eastern Europe and a white man from Western Europe, or a black man from Africa and a black man from America, are treated differently in Korea.
2. She said that her friend from Turkey was treated worse than her because of her race. But Koreans can't tell the difference between Turkish and European looks. Northern Europeans, Southern Europeans, Middle Eastern Asians, Hispanics... They all look alike to Koreans.
3. A person with a beautiful appearance, regardless of race or country, receives attention and love from many Koreans. Even if it does not meet the beauty standards of Korea... And the appearance of the woman in the interview is considered very beautiful in Korea.
4. Caucasian skin is not preferred in Korea. Caucasian skin has been described as rusty skin and red skin by Koreans since the Joseon Dynasty. The biggest reason white people have a good image isn't because of their skin.
5. The reason why the image of Europeans is good in Korea is that because they are from rich countries, Koreans feel that they are less dangerous. And in many Hollywood movies, white people are portrayed nicely. So their image is good. That's all. And East Asian countries, including Korea, have historically never been colonized by European countries (this is a very rare case on Earth), but have historically had many problems with other Asian countries. So Koreans feel threatened by East Asians more than whites. White people are not on the radar of Koreans. And in Korean society, the actual upper class is Korean, not white. Most whites are ordinary English teachers. White people are not a threat to Koreans.
6. 50 million people live in Korea. Everyone's tastes are not the same. Some men like whites, some men like Southeast Asians, some men like blacks. this is so natural...
7. If you are good at Korean and know about korean culture perfectly. Many of koreans give you a lot of love.. where you are from isn't more important than that..
I simply don’t understand why you don’t have more likes than you deserve. This is clearly well said. That just means people don’t care to read long decent comments. They are hasty to judge based on their own lens.
I’d like to add that, historically, Koreans preferred fair and bright skin because that indicated noble, well-educated, rich class that do not get much sun exposure, therefore, keeping their skin tone brighter than others - since almost 1000years ago when there hardly were any different race around living together in the peninsula. But people just think off of what they’ve seen and experienced - and that’s why it makes not much sense for Koreans. Like we don’t, nor did we ever have to, think about the issue of racism, anyway. I honestly feel so offended and discriminated whenever other people say these and think that Koreans are racist without any cultural or historical research on Korea. While Asian countries who are developing countries till today are just because of 100 years of colonization of these Europeans, it's not their fault (nobody wants to be poor) . You said it's nothing to do with color but isn't this unfair too ...bcoz poor people are more grateful,more satisfied, more helpful, more generous, more kind in general. This is all about understanding, or maybe Koreans don't really see international authentic news where you can see actuall problems and serious issues of these so considered rich European countries. Korea is one of the last countries on the planet to enter the global world, so they still have fear and ignorance toward foreign countries.
I understand exactly what you are saying because I have lived in many different countries in the past. I made many good friends in Thailand and the Philippines and I was very impressed with Southeast Asian's attitude for life.
Koreans have always paid more attention to the situation in East Asia, where there are threats from North Korea, China, and Japan, and they tend not to think deeply about other continents such as Europe and Southeast Asia. And their superficial images in Korea are mostly derived from News or Hollywood movies.
Koreans were probably vaguely afraid of the possibilities that people from developing countries are more likely to engage in illegal activities for money. but I think that this wrong prejudice should be eliminated. I know there are more good people than bad people in there.

Cause pale skin means non-outdoor working class who can spend their time and wealth for beauty cares.
Korea peninsula is 5000 Years of history and early settled kingdoms culture.
Once society system got civilized, people do extra things, not just make-a-living work. Caring their beauty is one of them.
Also there are so many histrical record about Kpop idol style beauty (bit of girly charm young males? anyway we called it as a Flower-handsome)

I am not try to say there's 0 influence of west. Western pop culture and beauty industries are still huge. Of course, they influeces whold world.

That's what I've noticed. There's a weird thing where white ppl are well received especially if their pretty, but not ppl that are darker. Even other asain ppl. Even when I listen to kpop I u don't see many trainees that are darker and if they were they get their skin bleached ans u notice that their so pale now. And lord forbid u are another race and ur not white or asain. It doesn't pass. Only trainees I've seen are asain or white or both. It's interesting for sure.
A lot of places in Southeast Asia have beauty standards that involve fair complexions. Some beauty product lines i.e. Shu Uemura sell skin bleachers/lighteners to lighten your complexions. In Indonesia, they have a word for white people: "bule" (bool-eh). So to me, im not surprised even if I've never been.

Koreans even treat dark Asians really different.Of course they are nice people there but definitely the issue of colorism is present for sure.
