i suffer a lot because i do weight less than 40kg - my genes plays part in it the most. so, the beauty standard here in my country is being “perfect/balanced”, like not skinny but not fat. and it’s really hard for me finding good clothes that fits my body properly, especially jeans. i also get often looked down by other people, since i’m underweight, they think i don’t eat. a huge amount of people do correlate being skinny or fat with being unhealthy, when, in fact, a lot of biological factors determine your weight (not only how much you’re eating haha). being healthy is a matter of what you eat, and how physically active you are, not a matter of how much do you weight.

    • @etanol.
      @etanol. Рік тому +8

@feelic4312 that sucks. these ppl are just stupid for thinking this way. but, in my opinion, the worse part is not being able to fit well in any clothes because they weren’t made for your body. it’s ridiculous to face difficulty by just trying to find a *nice jeans* that fits you. we’re basically being excluded

    • @SweetforS
      @SweetforS Рік тому +4

@feelic4312I swear skinny shaming me real. So many of my friends tell em they’ve been told they are underweight and it’s just not true. I mean I’m not a doctor and I don’t know their 100% authentic lifestyle since I’m not them but just bc they are 95-105lbs (around that 44-47kg range) and are 5’2-4 (about 158-163cm) does not make them underweight. They are just model size skinny but definitely not anorexic just fast metabolism, and short. However one of these friends does eat extremely slow and drink lots of water so that’s probably why she gets full easily and the other has an iron deficiency but idk where that comes from.

As a 28 years-old Korean who lived in S.Korea for over 25 years I want to express my neutral opinion about some sensitive issues in my country. Also, everything I am saying about my society is a generalized opinion.
My country does have colourism. There is definitely a general colourism towards the skin colour itself and this expands to racial problems as well. I will give you my personal experience.
I used to live in the Philippines for about 2-3years in 3rd grade and moved back when I was in 6th. I still remember when I entered the classroom to introduce myself to my classmates.
Even if I was Korean, as soon as they saw me they were saying horrible racist jokes just because I had a darker skin colour than average Koreans. I will not go into details since its far too racist to write down.
BUT THE FACT IS THAT I AM 100% KOREAN. AND THEY WERE SAYING HORRIBLE RACIST JOKES JUST BECAUSE OF MY DARKER SKIN COLOUR. This is the fact of what happened
My mom was in front of the classroom too and she heard me get all these verbal abuse from the whole class. I was so humiliated that I asked the principal had to send me to another class. And even when I got older, the racist jokes never stopped. It only got worse and worse as the years went by.
It only stopped when I was fully grown up and I became strong and good looking enough(in Korean standards- small face, tall height, wide shoulders etc)
The fact is they generally dont favor dark skin that much. So Koreans like me with natural dark skin always faced something like racism living here. Didnt matter if I was Korean or not😂
One of the main reasons of white skin preference I think is because Koreans used to have a social upper class called 양반 in their history. And the sons and daughters of 양반-class had white skin because unlike middle class people, they didnt have to farm or cut down trees for a living, so they didnt get tanned as much. Maybe this gave the white skin a good image of a rich, elegant, well-educated boy or girl. I do not know precisely but I think this is the most valid theory I have heard.
But these kind of bizarre standards are not only for foreigners. Korean society has too much public standards and regulations that now they started to hate on each other. the bottom line is that the society is starting to break down because they set the beauty, economic, social standards so high that only a few people can fill. People who dont fulfill the standards are seen as ‘incapable of marriage’ which is sad.
Also, some Koreans are racist to foreigners because they experience racism when they travelled abroad. But I think this is pointless. They are pointing their spears at the wrong people who just like Korea.
FYI my wife is muslim and from France (part african) and I am one of the best English/British pronunciation teachers in South Korea. Because of my job I had the chance to communicate with quite a lot of Koreans of all ages from various areas. And they generally have the same thoughts in their minds.
I just wanted to share my personal experience of Korean society that you guys would not have heard that much. Thank you for reading guys. Have a good one. I cheer for you guys 😊 Hope you always have a good experience and always know that people like me exist too.

I never visited Korea, but watched a couple of k-dramas. For me it is really striking how common it is to discuss someone's looks, weight etc. In my culture those things are not discussed. You can say to a close friend 'you look great today', but you don't discuss who is the most beautiful in your school class or company, it is bad taste. Well, may be a bunch of gossiping 13 years olds can do this between themselves. And saying 'you skin is so white' or 'your face is so small' would be considered bordering offensive.

In many kdramas I watched, the female lead would undergo a drastic weight loss transformation to attract her crush. After weighing less than 40kg, the characters told her that she was "finally pretty" and glorified her like a goddess. Insinuating that her previous healthy weight wasn't pretty enough and that in order to win her crush she needed to weigh less than a small child. The incentives these kdramas push onto viewers is extremely unhealthy.

As a Korean woman I can say many of us MZ gens are trying to change the toxic beauty standards, as for body weight we of course want people to be comfortable with themselves and we want them to be healthy. Whatever that is for each person's body type , Health is the most important thing, not size. Whatever makes each person happy and healthy is all that matters. A couple years ago a wonderful female idol had to start taking meds for a anxiety disorder and she gained a little weight and netizens were so cruel to her. And that is NOT OKAY! Also there was a male idol who quickly lost a lot of weight and he was bombarded with judgment and hate even though he lost the weight because he developed a allergy to his favorite food which caused major stomach issues and when he had to cut that food out of his normal daily food he dropped weight but netizens did not care about why he lost the weight they were angry because he wasn't as buff as he was prior to his stomach issues.
I also want to say to many of you international kpop and k-drama fans you body shaming Korean women and men who are not as tall as men are in your country and skinny shaming those of us Korean women who are not able to gain weight is just as detrimental to our body image issues as the toxic netizens who "fat" shame girls/women who gain a few kg. Some of us Korean women would give anything nearly to be able to gain weight but even with weight gain shakes cannot. Being called stick thin and other ridiculous nonsense feels no better than being fat shamed would. One of the toxic beauty standards here has always been skin tone. Many of us Koreans who are a little darker skin tone have had MANY people (again elder gens mostly) who have been cruel about our skin tone being darker. (Cannot tell you how happy I was when some darker idols told fans they can bark insults about their skin tone but they are the ones making major bank while the dogs are living with their Eommas and unsuccessful). That view about darker skin tone has been handed down for centuries because in the days of Korean royalty royals were known by their very light skin tone because they didn't have to work outside like "peasants" or commoners did and as there is no royalty now the elders still are set in those old ways. and although there are MILLIONS of us Koreans who's bloodline descended from royalty our skin tone should not matter at all yet to some it does. I remember when I was a child my Halabeoji made a comment about my skin tone being darker than my sister and brother's skin tones and even suggested to my Appa that he start bleaching my skin like he did to my Appa when he was a little boy. My Appa told him absolutely not that he was not going to allow anyone to make me feel like something was wrong with me because I have darker skin than my siblings. This is why we MZ generations have been fighting back against the old toxic beliefs. It is not okay to judge anyone because of the way they look.

The actually healthy ones, meaning the ones not doing a restrictive diet or the ones that aren't solely focused on being skinny are few and far between. Majority of female idols don't work out nor do they eat healthy. They eat light but eat junk and then restrict themselves to lose weight when it's time for a comeback. Not their faults but the companies and publics though, but Aespa and LS are in no way, shape or form the standards of health nor do they look MUCH more healthy, they look average, meaning they are skinny enough for the company and the public.

As the girl mentioned, some people have started focusing on healthier standards (my exes were like that too). However, I also feel the pressure to look healthy. My legs and arms don't genetically get thicker even though other parts of my body get chubbier. Those who prioritize healthier looks also complain abt my skinny arms. I've tried everything, including working out, to make them thicker, but it never happened. Consequently, I've been seen as not taking care of myself by those who value healthier appearances. It seems like they don't know the fact that it's very difficult to maintain a balance between not being overweight and not being too skinny. The problem with both of these standards is not the type of beauty they promote but rather the pressure they exert on others to meet those standards.

*In Indonesia transparency have no beauty standard, but actually silently by public or social people would pay attention to 100% indonesian face with sharp nose and clear skin (light, tan or black skin doesnt matter) , mix blood would attentive too but it'll get different impression bcause people with mix blood usually good looking definitely, i mean most people with mix blood they never birth ugly, so unaccidentally the standards is "100% pure indonesian face with perfect features", but because we have no bully culture we didnt look someone from their body/physical.*

I started watching Kdrama and got into KPOP same time in 2009 start. Till 2018 I think my dream was to goto Korea and settle down there cos of seasons, clean cities, and high end products ..etc. But with time apart from watching dramas and listening to songs I started to read daily about Korea before I start my work at office and I understood no Korea is not the country to settle down but may be to visit just for a week. Cos Koreans majority discriminate dark skinned, fatty chubbies, judge by looks. Me being a Sri Lankan with dark brown skin color and chubby girl with comfort in Ts and denim but not heels and also I prefer manners & respect (Koreans do not say sorry if you bump in road & specially job seniors never say) would never be able to live in such country.
Now adays young people teens in 15-25 like and even travel to study to Korea but when watch some students' YT videos can understand the discrimination they face with high pressure.
Korea is a developed country in technology, entertainment but sadly not developed in good attitude and character to others to look in positive manner. ✌️

@@editeuworld3004 yes. I 100% agree on your point - no country is free of recisim / discrimination.
Korea basically became popular with BTS.
Watch more internation student videos ..even americans british students voice out that even with their white pale skin color most Koreans not accepting them and students were getting negative feedback from locals. Only their close uni students stick together but rest treat different.
People would not critize without proof.
Why sucide rate is very high in Korea? Even Koreans face the discrimination.
Why Korean teens say they want to move out of country? If you watch videos more on Korea it would be clear. With pressure, discrimination, high sucide and divorce rate - Korean entertainment industry color a beautiful picture to the world.
So youngesters mostly age 10-25 think yeah every Korean boy is like BTS or a KPOP idol or their favorite Kdrama actor. All girls are like Kdrama innocent heart warming lead actress who helps you always. Nah! Lets face the reality.
Korea indeed a beautiful country and developes..but attitude wise still have to improve. I'm not saying everyone same. 3/5 Koreans are not fair treating a forienger or a local. Watch Korean news, read articles or easy way watch vlogs of different nationalities studying in Korea not the ones of Korean married ones.✌️

Not just in Korea/Japan/China. Colorism is still strong in every part of Asia. I’m from South East Asia, we added “mixed raced children” into the bowl lol. Many people in my country still prefered a “european or arabic” features as beautiful, added pale skin then u are invicible. They dominate from TV dramas to commercial, peagants etc. the idea of a place where u won’t be judge by ur skin color or looks in Asia is still a world away.

So after seeing our reaction those people used to feel insecure started feeling nice. Maybe it was if my people don't like there are bunch of people who will love as I am. Our criticism against their beauty standards made insecure people confident. I mean beauty comes from confidence.

Honestly it doesn't make any sense, it's no way at all judging from their look. I am 157cm and I am 44kg and I am skinny and wearing XS. So I know when they lie about their weight. As much as Kpop is influencing the world, the world is starting to influence Korea. Westerners have no problem calling out idols we feel are too thin, as well as the agencies who are supposedly starving these kids. And while we LOVE Korean beauty products, said products are being promoted all over the web by Westerners of every size and color. As with any society, the older gens are going to adhere to "ye olde ways" but the economy is run by the youngsters with disposable income (their own OR Mommy and Daddy's), and they're seeing how the rest of the world acts. America is this spectrum of cultures and colors, and we're a bit upset by Asians thinking they need to bleach their skin or *shudder* have their eyes double-lidded or their jawbone shaved down! But we've also exported our junk food, and Asians have latched onto McD's and Starbucks and are starting to experience the obesity issues of Western culture, and if that keeps up, they're going to have to revise their beauty standards to accept people who take up 2 airplane seats.

I'm guessing this woman isn't Korean... Judging by her accent - bc Korea's toxic obsession for weight and beauty isn't getting better, it's getting worse.
Koreans trick themselves into believing that they're taking care of our body by exercising, but in reality it's more about taking 'body profile' pictures. Ppl go through extreme weight loss for a short period of time and after taking these pictures you gain weight again(inevitably). They look at their body profile pics and think that you constantly have to be THAT fit and skinny.
You can also see that girl groups are WAY more skinnier than they were 10 years ago. I'm not body shaming the girls, but it's just that they influence kids a lot. I've seen a lot of teenage girls having eating disorders in Korea, it frustrates me.

Also, the world and the time has changed, I think it's safe to say that we should keep up and update as well no? Please remember, just because you're old does not mean you cant be corrected/wrong. But they want her to feel like they'll always see her and be there for her and that they owe them everything and not the other way around!

I'm gonna say beauty extandards shoulnd't and it doens't, it's just people who is terrible inside. The beauty standards it's nothong more than people following the other for so many reasons but the thing is that when it gets to be desrespectfull, racist and etc. Now think, if there is an artist that becomes really popular and has this kinda of eyes for example, people will start thinking is pretty just because others started to make it a trend or saying "Her eyes are so pretty" or "i whish i had those eyes", not that the eyes weren't pretty but the thing is how people just follow along until there are people who are jealous and mean, the truth is that EVERYTHING in EVERYONE is PRETTY, the thing is that they just aren't the current trend. So don't even think you are not pretty or try to change yourself for some trend because it will change it later and you'll see that that wans't the perfect and ONLY PRETTY to be like.
