    You may have just saved my 16,000 mile ride to the Arctic Ocean and back from North Carolina. I was out trying my new Media Module and was getting all sorts of crackling. I changed both my 9 and 10. Thanks!!

    Thanks for this. I use a Hero 8 Black with the Media Mod and an external mic. I set it up the way you described and still got the snap, crackle pop. It only seems to get really bad when I am talking while riding at higher speeds. High speed no talk almost no noise. Lower speed and talking no noise (~80km/hr). Around town speed (50 - 60km/hr) no issues. I will continue to test.

      Hmm that’s interesting. I get the odd crackle when I’m north of 100+mph but otherwise it’s fine?
      My first thought would be it’s possibly the mic connection to the media mod ‘moving’ due to wind turbulence at high speed, but you say it’s fine if you’re not talking(?) so that rules that out 🤔

    • @BikeBoatandTravel
      @BikeBoatandTravel 3 роки тому +2

      Yes it remains a mystery. I bought the GP as an "upgrade" to my last action camera which produced perfect sound from the external mic. I believe that was largely due to the fact that in the settings you could control the mic input volume. If it started to crackle or distort the fix was simple, just reduce the volume. I suppose when I want to talk I will just have to reduce speed. Another thing i noticed on the 8. You have to set the wind setting before you plug the mic into the media mod after it is plugged in you can't access that setting.

      Hi mate buy an extra foam wind muff for your lav. If you use 3 of them small over eachother it should fix it. Don't buy the fury ones just a small medium and large foam one.

    GoPro Hero 7 Black --> Preferences --> Set the input/out audio to standard mic. Then in video settings --> Raw Audio - Medium, Mics - Stereo, resolved all the crackling/static noise. I found that the culprit was standard mic+ setting.

    I came across this when just looking for a review on a mic and have had the crackle problem too. In my case it was caused by my thickheaded setting the mic to "powered mic" instead of "standard". That resolved the problem of blowing the sound out the top but I still have wind and engine noise issues. I'm going to try your solution. Cheers from Cape Town

      No probs bud.
      I always use the silicon-type putty around connections too (both with the media mod and if I’m using the audio adaptor) as a loose connection will also cause the crackle/popping 👍

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  3 роки тому +1

      Try experimenting with the RAW audio settings too as it can really improve audio when using the native mics on the GoPro.
      When using Lav mics on the bike, I found it best to either turn off RAW audio, or set it to low in order to get the best engine noise via the helmet mic.
      Obviously you use an external recorder for engine noise so you may prefer the RAW settings for some of your stuff 👍

    Thanks for the video. I've been having the same issue of crackling and popping along with total silence out of the blue. I have the same set up in two helmets. I've narrowed this down to it happens only in one helmet so I assumed my microphone in one helmet must have been the issue as the two helmets are basically the same set up. That's with me leaving Wind in the same setting, whatever that is as I've experimented with in all of them.

      I certainly wouldn’t submerge it in water, but I’ve used it in rain fairly frequently over the winter.
      I always use the mouldable putty stuff (mouldable earplugs) to mould around the 3.5mm mic input, and you could also mould this around the ‘seal’ when the media mod contacts the GoPro I suppose 👍

      Cheers Andy, this works from Hero 5 onwards, as long as they have ProTune settings for the mic input.
      Just a Lav mic straight to the Hero 9 via the media mod - I used to use the Hero7 though with the audio adaptor.

  • @Dan_TheMedic
    @Dan_TheMedic 2 роки тому

    Mine is doing exactly this however, I was under the assumption that in order to be able to split out your comms; lav mic input and any other audio input to your GoPro when you expand the audio, so you can isolate each rider’s audio, you have to have your raw audio set to anything but off? I had mine set to high under RAW AUDIO on my GPH9 and an using the media mod.
    After watching your ‘How to adjust audio - group chat is too quiet’ video, I can now bump my buddy comms as they like yours were almost inaudible they were that quiet, but surely if as your video shows, turning it off will eliminate crackling, I won’t be able to boost my buddy comms.
    My wind was also set to OFF.
    I’m also using FCPX on Mac.

      Hi Kavyaaa,
      It could be a few things. If you’re using an external mic it could be the connection between the mic and the GoPro. The lead only needs to come out a tiny bit and the audio will mute or produce a lot of static.
      It could simply be the GoPro, sometimes it just mites audio for absolutely no reason 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  2 роки тому +1

      Aye it could be that, but could also be wind turbulence on your mic cable and connection to the media mod. Any movement of the connection will cause static and crackling.

      I like the Hero 9, the stabilisation and picture quality are amazing - however it often freezes or corrupts files.
      The media mod is fantastic, I’ll always have one for my helmet mounted camera purely as it allows me to plug a mic in without that daft audio adaptor GoPro insist on using.

  • @Daves_Man_Cave
    @Daves_Man_Cave Рік тому

    Do you not still have issues with loud exhaust and wind noise, being too loud and causing clipping and distortion? I get around that, mostly, with other cameras by turning the camera gain way down... On the DJI Action 3, I did -8dB on the camera itself, and then on the DJI wireless mic I did -12dB on both the Tx and Rx. That got clear audio without distortion... But the wireless mic setup fried in a rain storm.
    So I am back on my Insta360 One RS 4K with a Road 2 lav mic plugged in, and it's ok with the mic gain set to -18dB. But the video quality, while good, isn't as good as GoPro.
    My issues with getting a GoPro 11 Black, is that they tend to overheat here in the hot south, and there is no ability to lower the mic gain with the GoPro and media mod using an external mic. I am hesitant to spend $400 on another GoPro product, have to worry about overheating and random lockups like my Hero 9 and 10 had, only to find that the audio is still messed up.
    Both of my bikes are loud. 22 Ninja ZX14R with Dekavic cans, and a 2022 MT-10 with Leo Vince muffler and decat. When I get moving and the wind noise picks up and I get into the higher revs, it tends to blow out the audio with distortion unless I can reduce the mic gain. I have tried 7 or 8 different lav mics, and they all have the same issues with loud ambient noises...
    Thoughts?

      @@teapotone Just an update - but that setting did not help me on my setup for a GoPro8 using media mod and a 3.5 lavalier inside the helmet - so - not sure what it is - could be the wire that is being used to connect to it or just an issue on the media mod.... but its unusable this way. It seemed to only happen when I get to about 40PMG or higher - which makes me think its the wire connection somehow.

      Use a sound recorder like the Zoom H1 with a dead cat and put that under your seat or in a rucksack etc. This will record the engine noise and exterior noise, and just mute the GoPro noise and sync to the H1 audio.

    I've turned off the wind settings on my Heros 6 and 9 and I still have problems with either popping/crackles or total audio recording failures. But you do make a great point about using silicone or similar to reinforce the connections.
    I'm giving the Hero 9 another chance at recording audio this season but I'll also be recording audio into a Zoom H1n via a separate mic because I just don't trust it!

      If you’re still getting the pop and crackle after turning the wind setting to either stereo or on, then it’s definitely a physical connection issue. I always use the silicon putty around the connections as it not only firms them up, but also weatherproofs them against the rain 👍

Or do you figure it is best to just keep it off - I notice when I do turn it off, and I ride with my visor up, the wind is pretty prevalent with the setting turned off - Maybe I need to experiment with a dead cat for the mic - Anyway, excellent video for us on the road recording, good stuff man! 🗽⚡️

      Ha Ha, great to hear the vid has helped Murt 👍
      With the mic, make sure it’s pointing back at you ideally, or even upwards - just not directly forward - this will massively help to reduce wind noise.
      I’ve found on some Lav mics you can even keep the pop filter (the little foam bit on the end of the Lav mic) on the mic and then put the deadcat over the top of that, effectively doubling up protection against the wind.
      This doesn’t work with all Lav mic as it will sometimes produce a very muffled sound, so do some testing with your first👍
