People can be kinda cringe. They see someone lift 500kg, something that really shouldn’t be possible yet people manage it anyways, and instead of thinking “that’s impressive” they think “one man did a different lift, that’s cringe, I should flame them in the comments”. Like, who cares? It’s not as if this video is an official list with important parameters, it’s just a compilation of heavy deadlifts, I’d like to see you lift 500kg if you think it’s so easy

You then try to obfuscate the issue when I point out it very much is a list of something specific by referring to the title which states it's a video about a specific achievements. Not only is it a clumpsy attempt at goal-post moving, it's contradictory as well. And none of it disputes the reasons some people don't consider the sumo deadlift a proper execution.

Maybe the other competitors were lied to and it was only 480/485, Eddie took almost a half hour rest between his lifts so the others had cooled off too much and struggled with the lifts. Also the plates weren’t weighed on camera so the actual weight wasn’t verified as been 500kg

Thor's 501 was sanctioned by WUS and was a stand-alone lift akin to Rogue's Record Breakers.
Eddie's 500 actually had less strict rules and cannot be called a true "competition." Eddie brought his own lifting platform and used his own bar. Eddie, as an athlete dictated what the weight jumps would be, which angered other strongmen lifting, including Shaw. Eddie, again as an athlete participating in this show, dictated his own rest times and came out whenever he felt like it, instead of after a set time. Jerry even complained about this stating that Eddie got as much rest as he wanted but the rest of the athletes were told when to come out to lift. Jerry credited his injury to this, stating that Eddie took so long that he cooled down too much from his prior attempt. In no way should an athlete in a legit competition have this much special treatment.
Meanwhile, Thor had to follow strict timing between his lifts and was told when he had to come out and how much time he had on the platform. Thor used brand new equipment from Rogue, with each plate being weighed and verified by Magnus and Big Z via zoom. For all intents and purposes, Thor's attempt was closer to a properly regulated competition than Eddie's was.

Out of all the sports I would say they serve all the respect and it is very much underrated, you can be good at a sport activity with the aids of talent and gene but in strongman or powerlifting whatever you call it it’s more about the dedication, sheer mind power and extreme discipline. Both are impressive, but when you see how much higher the bar goes during a conventional deadlift, its difficult sometimes to compare the 500-502kg sumo deads to real conventional, yet it seems to drive people crazy about ROM during a powerlifting bench, but seemingly not an issue with sumo deads, lol.

    • @dutchlane2681
      @dutchlane2681 5 місяців тому +4

its not even about range of motion entirely, deadlift is fundamentally a hip hinge movement, but by going sumo, you can basically get into a stance where your torso is vertical before the lift even starts which turns it into something like a reverse squat. if you want to do sumo deadlift because it focuses glutes more than traditional, fine, and if people want to compete to see who can lift the heaviest sumo, go ahead, but to act like sumo and traditional are the same lift is ridiculous and clearly not true.
There's a reason we care so much about the big 3, and its because they all are lifts that work fundamentally different parts of our body in order to build balanced overall strength, if you swap deadlift out for sumo, then your effectively removing one third of the equation. This is why sumo isn't as respected as traditional deadlift, and never will be.

Sumo is not easier in absolute terms, it depends on the anthropometrics of the lifter. Sometimes its the harder lift, that's why so many lifters can do maximal lifts with conventional, especially the super heavy.
If sumo was truly easier in the absolute sense, competitive lifters doing conventional would be moronic.

@@wiebegraham Definitely not. Despite training for sumo since I've started lifting, during maxing out day, managed to PR higher by switching to conventional. I can rep 4 plates with conventional; with sumo, I'm gassing by the end with one rep. Physics, wise, for the same weight, sumo requires much more force to lift off than conventional at the cost of less distance to travel; to be exact, ignoring biomechanic, given that lifting sumo requires a force F, sumo requires F / sin(θ) with θ being the interior angle of the leg to the ground. Observe that since sin(θ)

@@HoofHearted314 Strongman has no single governing body. This leads to dispute and ambiguity. This event was infact sanctioned by one of those bodies among many which is 'World's Ultimate Strongman (WUS)'. It's an annual strength athletics competition which began in 2018 and it has a number of parallel, rival competitions including World's Strongest Man, Arnold Strongman Classic and Giants Live Tour etc. Inaugural edition of the competition was held in Dubai in 2018 and it was won by Hafthor. 2019 winner was Mateusz again in Dubai. In Feb, 2020 it was announced the competition would be expanding and would be held in Bahrain at the Bahrain International Circuit with a purse of USD 350,000, which was the largest for any Strongman Competition. In March, WUS released an official statement entailing that the event which was scheduled in mid April was 'cancelled' due to the Pandemic (I'm sure you all are aware that there is a global pandemic going on called Covid-19), and because of travel restrictions placed in many countries, WUS announced that they will govern the Record breaker attempts from these events in 'Feats of Strength series' which to be conducted at home/private gyms but live streamed for free for the public to view in real time. Here are some of the WRs which were sanctioned under Feats of Strength by WUS, during that season:
Maximum Deadlift (Standard bar) - Hafthor Bjornsson 🇮🇸, 501 kg. 2/5/20.
Maximum Atlas Stone lift - Tom Stoltman 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧, 286 kg. 23/5/20.
100 kg Circus Dumbbell press for reps - Oleksii Novikov 🇺🇦, 11 reps. 30/5/20.
      Maximum Atlas Stone lift (Women's U64kg) - Rhianon Lovelace 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧, 139 kg. 6/6/20.
Maximum Log lift (American Record) - Rob Kearney 🇺🇲, 216 kg. 13/6/20.
      Maximum Log lift (Women's) - Andrea Thompson 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧, 135kg. 4/7/20.
400kg Deadlift (standard bar) for Repetitions - Rauno Heinla 🇪🇪, 6 reps. 13/9/20.
      Maximum Atlas Stones lift (Women's) - Donna Moore 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧, 171kg. 27/9/20.
      Maximum Deadlift (Standard bar) (Women's) - Andrea Thompson 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧, 290kg. 4/10/20.
      Maximum Deadlift (Standard bar) Master's (over 40y) - Mikhail Shivlyakov 🇷🇺, 436kg. 18/10/20.
Additionally, below athletes attempted the WRs but were unsuccessful: Luke Stoltman, Rob Kearney (Max log), Julius Maddox (Raw Bench press), Terry Hollands (Masters Max Deadlift), Jerry Pritchett, Adam Bishop, JF Caron, Konstantine Janashia, Trey Mitchell (400kg Deadlift for reps) and Ivan Makarov (Maximum Deadlift).
So the event was cancelled in 2020 due to Pandemic and all the scheduled work was sanctioned by WUS 'for the Record breakers' and held like that in 2020 under Feats of Strength Series. Finally the competition resumed in 2021 March in Bahrain (the one schedule in April 2020 in Bahrain which was cancelled) where it was won by Oleksii Novikov. A feat he replicated in September 2021 (the actual 2021 competition), winning it back to back.
Hope this helps you to understand.
Furthermore: He pulled the Weight from the floor and we all saw it. As elaborated above the pandemic cancelled all shows. It was planned for WUS 2020 at Bahrain and it got cancelled. But WUS officially hosted the event under WUS Feats of Strength 2020. Only maximum of 20 people allowed per vanue. It was live streamed so anyone in the world can see. All plates were brand new Rogue calibrated plates. Each and every single plate accurately weighed to 3 decimal places in front of the official judge MVM and signed for verification. Go check the video, it's available in Hafthor's Official UA-cam channel. The lift was broadcasted live in real time. WSM head judge MVM declared it was a good lift.
We all saw that Hafthor made it as if 501 was not even a challenging enough weight for him! If you are an obsessive Eddie fan (I'm assuming) we all know that Eddie almost died after the 500, and contrastingly Hafthor Pulled 501 like nothing, perfect lockout, and was standing tall after the lift... There's two men in the 500 club, true and Eddie was the first man to do it, true but there's only one man in more than 500 club now for more than 2 years...
Hafthor Bjornsson is the World Record holder of the Deadlift. Google it up, you can see it for yourself under Guinness World Records.
I also have a couple of counter questions with refer to competition/ maybe now about the crowd as competition hypothesis is explained above, which is not the case anymore:
The 1st event of ESM 2016 was the Deadlift (event 1 is called Giant's live World Deadlift Championship). There was no events before. Eddie was also fresh coming into the lifts. Thor had the same number of weight jumps 420, 465 and the Big one and at less time intervals between them that Eddie had, giving less rest between the sets to Thor.
We should also not forget that in a competition (if you have competed at an event you will know what I'm trying to explain), the cheering crowd (thousands at ESM 2016) is a natural Adrenaline booster which will help the mind achieve even more than what your body really can. So with my experience, a cheering crowd makes me lift better.
Also, does gravity apply differently in competition? No, but did you know that the gravity acts slightly differently depending on how close you are to the equator or to the poles? A weight weighs less on the equator than at the poles. Using Newton's law of gravity, we find that the force of earth's gravity on objects at the equator is 9.798 m/s2, whereas at the poles it is 9.863 m/s2 meaning the objects weigh heavier when you are closer to poles and further away from equator; the earth's centrifugal force varies with latitude being the principal behind it. Reykjavík, Iceland is closer towards the North pole and further away from the equator than Leeds, England. So even if it's a very small amount, there are things like that also.
Weight is a weight. 501 kilos is 501 kilos. But I want to tell you that they did everything possible with the existing world situation to do it a best, most officially possible and feasible way anyone can during that time period.

@@HoofHearted314 Google Feats of Strength under WUS. It was an official lift. And while you're googling that, look up just how extremely unprofessional Eddie's conditions were for that lift. He got to choose his own platform. That goes against the rules. He got to choose the bar. That goes against the rules. He got to choose his own rest time. That goes against the rules. The standard is a maximum of 15 minutes. Eddie Hall ended up taking 28 minutes, which caused Jerry Pritchett to go cold and tear his hamstring. The conditions for his deadlift were so fucking skewed to his advantage in fact, that his own buddy Brian Shaw refused to show up for Giant's Live that year.
Hafthor was not allowed ANY of these privileges. He was set using a standard platform, standard bar, standard weight incline, and was checked into a maximum of 15 minutes of rest.
Hafthor's lift was WAY more legit than Eddie's.
