I can't see why a drum teacher would criticize using the non-dominant foot (or switching back and forth) in the thrash beat. You're working on making it equal to the dominant foot. I really wish I had taken lessons from other metal drummers like Jon.

If I ever get to the point where I say "I've seen it all" or even think that I can't learn something new or get a fresh perspective on something old then it'll be time to use my sticks for kindling!!!!! The late Neil Peart (RIP) knew this. It's why he went and found the legendary Freddie Gruber and studied under him. You can see the difference in his drumming B4 and after. B4 the machine!!! After more relaxed approach to how he played!!!!! We can always learn but sometimes we have to swallow our ego. Just the other week a friend of my son showed me something new and different on the drums 🥁 and I swallowed my pride and asked this 16 year old to "show me" but it was just a different way of saying "teach me"" !!!!!! Try that with a more Lombardo-esque thrash beat where the bass/snare pattern is 1-1 2-1 1-1 2-1, etc.
