Thanks for the video. We need many more of these! IT's always great to see other people's creative process.

Thanks! I for sure still have a lot of imposter syndrome when it comes to game design! It's so surreal in a lot of ways! - Roy

Around the 10 minute mark really struck me. Intensely thinking about game ideas while I do the dishes or laundry, even to the point of dreaming about my current design etc. I relate completely to this process of plotting ideas then take them to prototypes.

Mundane tasks and problem-solving in your sleep is a huge part a game design for me for sure! The brain is weird but learning how to use daydreaming for creativity is huge! - Roy

I have so many phone notes from the constant random light bulb moments I have while at work, while trying to sleep, doing chores, etc. I also constantly tell friends and my wife about my ideas which helps me to figure things out more clearly even if they’re not really listening. Trying to explain the things I’m writing down or just thinking usually helps a ton with figuring out the finer details.

@talonquestbg6830 I am also constantly talking through my ideas and telling people around me. Some of them listen, but really they hate it.

I think a huge portion of board gamers are aspiring board game designers. There's something about the full transparency of a board game that invites people to wonder, "What if there was a game like this, or a game that captured that feeling?" Always cool to see people who are successful game designers talk about their success.

I’m here for this! Designers unite! I’ve got lots of ideas swirling constantly for the game I’m working on. I started following a Game Design Document template just to help me organize my ideas into easy to follow sections. This helps me when I want to go back and find a concept I was thinking about and make tweaks before or during the prototype phase.

Great video! Always interesting to hear about different people's design process. It's also been cool to hear about LL on the channel before it came out, and then seeing the success! I have my copy and want to give it a try, any how to play video from you would be awesome!

Great video! I’m always playing around with ideas in my head but haven’t had the time commitment to try and really design before.
I have found that I have a knack for play testing games for “balance”. Mostly I want games with multiple paths to victory.
Enjoyed hearing about your experiences with games and how that led you into designing.

Really appreciate the video Roy, looking forward to part 2. Question…..do you resent your legalistic Christian upbringing? Are you Christian now?
My recommended Last light to my brother in law because it looked like his type of game (his parents ended up getting it for him for Christmas) and I played it and really enjoyed it!

Thanks for sharing! I've been designing on and off for a few years. My style is a lot like yours where I'm in my head and scribbiling in notebooks a whole lot before I start prototyping. Your 100% correct that prototyping and play testing are the hardest part! Can't wait for the next video. Congrats on the success of Last Light!

Thanks Roy! It was so great to see and hear your process. I’m also very introspective when I was designing my current game.
I’m actually an author and I write children’s books. And I decided I wanted to create a card game in the same world as my books.
My design method was very similar to yours, where I designed a great deal of it inside my head long before I created my first prototype.
Can’t wait to see the next episode of this series!

This series is coming at the perfect time with me in the middle of designing a game - appreciate you sharing your insights Roy!
I'm in the middle of playtesting and would appreciate your thoughts on how you figure out if the people playtesting are your target audience and weighing their feedback accordingly? For example: Jane might love my game because it is her type of game so she gives me glowing feedback, but Joe doesn't like it because he prefers other game types, and lists a ton of things he thinks need to change - how do you decide which things to listen to and how close you really are to being done playtesting? Hope that makes sense 😅

Really enjoyed this. I have several half thought out ideas and want to start moving forward with one or two. My problem is the more I learn about a game the more I find out my idea exists or something close exists. I was working on a semi co-op global warming game then saw the Daybreak kickstarter and stopped working on it

this is great, thanks Roy! If I had to bet, I would say that you also have another technique about creativity that you couldn't include in the video ;-) And I could be wrong about that but good ideas come from there and they say that are good ideas in your game, so... maybe...
    Edit:
Anyway, unrelated. One thing you said is super familiar to me. The idea of thinking about the game and trying to anticipate problems. And good things come up from that. And they may solve those problems for real. And after that, some testing will find out the problems we hadn't thought about.

It seems like you’re trying to insinuate drug use. I’ve never use drugs in my life! I’ve never even smoked a cigarette… they’ve been so many talented people who’ve gone down that rabbit hole and never come back. Why would anybody risk addiction and losing grasp with reality… I’ll live my life sober and in the real world thank you!

    • @fmgs31
      @fmgs31 6 місяців тому

@@EpicGamingNight I'm sorry, my assumption was waaay off. I thought about it because is something that I found useful myself... always doing it occasionally and in touch with reality. Of course, I won't downsize the risks, (I have some friends that smoke weed daily, sometimes even more than that, and I doubt they would be able to quit if they want to). The problems arise when someone thinks there is no risk at all. But that's a long conversation topic and way off from this video.
Anyway, thanks for the video, is great. (And congrats on the success of the game! I haven't had the chance to try it yet but I'm super keen). And since I know you'll be reading this, this is the chance to let you know that I think that your contributions to The Dice Tower are fantastic! More of Roy and thematic games please.
