This is great! you should totally do a video on the machine master playstyle (my personal faviroute) and how badly its slept on, the tenakth tactician can have the highest damage value in the game with the right weaves, and the skills on the armor at max buff overidden machines to a frankly ludicrous degree (i've seen clawstriders take tremortusk's with some help from the player) not to mention it makes any overriden machine permanent allowing you to keep it on your side for the entire duration of the battle, meaning in places like the double tremortusk site you're atleast going to get a free kill, and an overidden machine can give you up to 3-5 hits without going hostile which lets you get freebie hits on important parts, i think you could teach alot about what types of machines make for the best overrides (some machine ai utterly breaks like the glinthawks are practically useless when overriden) and what element of machine is the most useful for combat
Thanks! I actually have a machine master playstyle video on my list of videos to make (my very long list lol 😅). But I have to admit, I don’t really play with the Machine Master tactics myself, so that one will be a bit more challenging for me to make. I’ll need to explore it more myself. Thanks for sharing some tips you think should be included 👍
Love this! As others have mentioned, your videos have made me pick up the game again many times. The deepened understanding of the mechanics immensely increased my enjoyment of the game as well. Thank you for another excellent video
@@ArktixOfficial So Yeah i Thought proppelled spike does the same amount of damage with splitting spike, and i thought spike mine was the weakest soo yeah thanks. But i still ike proppelled spike because i don't know if it's just a glitch or it's just for me but sometimes with proppelled spike it inflicts the drenched state, your guide is very useful but i watched it and you Didn't mention that so yeah i still use proppelled spike.
Oh interesting. I don’t think any of the spike throwers have and instant drenched perk, so you must just be exploding a purgewater sacs with the explosion.
I've been using the spinthorn even in the endgame since I saw it in one of your machine guides, arguably the best blue rarity weapon in the game because of the knockdown perk. I was always a guy who crutched on the ropecaster in ZD, with it not penetrating armour normally knockdown is an easy way to create some breathing room in a fight. Spikes are just more fun to use too. Great video as always.
Thank you! An oh yeah I love the Spinthorn! I kinda like that it’s a blue weapon too. One of those nice little gems you don’t find right away. Glad to hear you’re enjoying using it for knockdowns! I agree it’s a great way to create some breathing room.
The spike thrower from burning shores (last argument) has advanced explosive spikes, drill spikes, and plasma spikes. Its been my favorite spike thrower to use
Never occurred to me to use the spike thrower mine weapons technique in impact mode. Have to try that. The Spine Thorne is my favourite as well, though my reasons for using it are more roleplay driven. Aloy found the components and crafted the weapon herself, after all. Doesn't hurt it is great to trigger knock-downs of even the biggest machines. Now that I understand the mechanics of knock-downs I can be less wasteful with my drill spikes. Thank you Arktix.
Nice! Glad you found this helpful 😄 Yeah the Spinthorn is cool for RPG reasons as well. That’s a good point! And yes, using Spike Trap as a direct shot is a pretty neat trick. It’s stronger than you’d think!
Great video as always! I tried using spike throwers once I got stuck with Arena challenges and I must say it was a revelation for me! It made a huuge difference!
The Spike Thrower is surprisingly good. I used it to take down down a Slaughterspine comboed with my favorite heavy weapon the Boltblaster. Another helpful and well-made video.
Thank you so much for this! Didn’t even know that machine master had the spike thrower skills! This video and your video of mid game weapons improved my game enjoyment immensely. I really didn’t know how to properly play this game till now!
Drill spikes work especially well against frozen enemies. Since the drill's damage over time isn't a status effect, it won't override the Brittle status, and hitting a Brittle enemy with with one or two drill spikes will really eat through their health.
A little trick for weapon techniques that use more than one ammo is that if you only have one ammo of that type, it will still work and only use the one. When i use weapons techniques that use multiple, i intentionally only craft one bundle of ammo at a time for this specific reason.
I used an explosive spike thrower almost exclusively in the final fight! It seems to have made the fight a whole lot easier and I didn't use any weapon techniques! I also only use spike throwers on those nasty Slitherfangs!
I just love spikethrowers! I used the skykiller spikethrower to beat the game and some diffucult challenges and its (not ng+) in my opinion the best spikethrower for damage.
Maybe it´s a little comfort to know, that due better scaling of impact damage (LHRange, Brittle) the Purple One can do little more damage then the Defiance with Adv Explosive Spike (Powershot, Frost, LHR, MA).
Nice one, just a comment though. For Stormbirds, you can also hit them on the legs and wings for a knockdown. Works particularly easy with drill spikes, as you mentioned. Great video!
@@ArktixOfficial Sorry to ask this. How do you change the tips on ur spears and bow? You have a cool one that drills!! If you don’t have time i understand.
Ah well you don’t change the tips. I’m just changing ammo types via the weapon wheel. The spikes that drill are called drill spikes and certain spike throwers have them (Vindicator and Spinthorn for example)
Drill spikes are my favorite, they are relatively cheap to make, and I usually freeze the machine before, not sure if that does anything extra to it, but it must.
I've been running spike throwers since my first playthrough. I like the pulverizing spikethrower, but I'm gonna be honest; after using the pulverizing spikethrower for some time now, I recently went back to my trusty heartshatter spike thrower. I have it fully upgraded and the only way it looses to its stringer counterparts is coil slots. Idk... it feels a lot stronger
Nice! Interesting you like the Heartshatter more than the higher level Spike Throwers. Do you have the Skykiller or Defiance? I bet you’d like those if you got them upgraded!
@@ArktixOfficial I'll be honest with you buddy, I have neither. Defiance is on my list however. And to be forthcoming, I suppose that some of my apprehension stems from my brief escapade with the wings of ten blastsling. My style of combat (full pressure medium to close range 8-10 minute engagements) had me burning through blastpaste and other resources like CRAZY!!! and I fear it will be no less resource-hungry in this instance
Ah ok gotcha. Yeah I can see how the higher rarity spike throwers would be less appealing to you then. The ammo is pretty resource intensive to craft, so I can see how you’d burn through a lot!

I started using spikes only once I got the drill spikes and had no idea it is good for knocking them over. I just noticed they stagger quite a bit when getting drilled which gives me time to shoot more. I stayed away from spikes for so long cuz I play VH without reticle and it seemed to be time consuming and expensive to keep missing the throws. Once I started fighting bigger machines, it was harder to miss and I started getting the hang of it. Vindicator is my favorite! Thx for the tips. Gotta start aiming at those legs. I just started practicing jumping concentration throws with gauntlet today, thx to your gauntlet video! 🙂
I kinda sucked at this game - kinda below subpar getting killed by the bigger machines until I got good at the spike thrower - the drill and the explosive are my go to to get me through the mid game. I recommend it for anyone who struggles like me.
For me Spike Throwing was what made this game. It was more satisfying than shooting arrows. It was closish combat that lead to an adrenaline rush. So much fun with this skill.
These are by far the best in the game. After throwing 6 or 10 then attacking with any other weapon while the drill does its thing makes short work of everything
This has me hyped to finish off the skill tree. I'm half way through the game now and spikes are definitely my fave new weapon but haven't unlocked any skills for it yet
Bro you are so freaking smart! I didn't realize the damage over time was based on the initial impact damage. Increasing the impact damage with coils is so freaking smart! Keep up the amazing work. This channel finna blow up soon! 😎😎😎
One of my favorite weapons. Even without the techniques. IMO it outclasses the Boltblaster in utility if you don't count Sustained Burst. Similar to Blastsling in principle but I like how Blastsling is status biased vs Spikes being power biased.

Wow thank you! That is a very nice compliment 😊 I appreciate that! I’m definitely planning to cover other games in the future. The next one will be God of War: Ragnarok in November. After that I’m SUPER pumped to make content for Hogwarts Legacy (I’m a big HP fan 😄). In early 2023 we’ve got Forespoken and eventually Starfield and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. I’d love to know if there’s other games you’re looking forward to!
Now i´m famous :-)! Enough of brittle? Want to try something else? Be defiant! Use Defiance, coil it with corrode enemy damage, apply acid, corrode the enemy they way you like, being low health ranged rank 4 and mounted archer rank 4, and throw explosive and adv explosive spikes w/o overdrawing at the target. So, 115% damage increase for both, impact and explosion, you don´t need to overdraw to stick it into the armor, and you get another +15% crit on top. Also it seems that most coils probably effect the initial impact knockdown of drill spikes (120 /180 overdraw) and not necessarly the DoT part, concentration seems to to do it if that´s true your looking for 15% coils 210+225=425 vs 270+225=495 vs 210+393,75 = 603,75.
Worth noting that to actually take advantage of Knockdowns, you'll want to have the Grapple Strike ability, along with an armor that has a +2 Buff for both Critical Strike & Resonator Blast! This will allow you to do MASSIVE damage to a Knocked Down machine by Grapple Striking it & then following up with an arrow to the Resonator point you just created with the Grapple Strike. This alone should deal around 1,000 damage by itself! This is an amazing way to take out small & even mid sized machines with ease, specially early on when your weapons are still weak! It's even more helpful on higher difficulties when taking out machines quickly becomes paramount.
I do actually! I put it on pause a while ago so I could focus on making my other content, but I’m looking to pick the playthrough up again via a stream soon 👍
It's funny. From mid-to late-game, with ALL the legendary or rare weapons, I always turn to the Spike Thrower. I use two different ones in my loadout and rarely use any other weapon.
Love your content. Your deffinately the best channel I've seen for explaining in game tactics and strategies for HFW. I tried searching for a video on strategies for beating a dreadwing and couldn't find anything but people posting their boss fight with one. Nothing with clear instructions like you give. This is deffinately a top notch channel. Keep making these great videos, you'll get the subs for sure. I would like to make a request for a video on how to defeat a dreadwing. I keep struggling to get those damn metal fangs lol. I barely ever used drill spikes. Then I watched your video on how to defeat a Slitherfang using drill spikes to get a knockdown, which was very helpful. Drill Spikes are now one of my favorite and most used weapons. Got 3 knockdown power coils on my Vindicator spike thrower. Works great.
Hey thank you! Glad you’re finding my content helpful and that you like the drill spike knockdowns 😄 A Dreadwing hunting guide is on my list of videos to make!
Great vids, mate. One point I noticed that wasn't mentioned, but probably needs further research and checking. Using drill spikes on Frostclaws and Fireclaws when farming them for Sac webbing, they seemed to detonate their belly sacs, even when I hit them in the side or back. Not sure what caused this, but it's good to note for damage dealing, but really bad for harvesting the sac webbing.
I'd argue that Overdraw Coils are by FAR the best choice if focusing on just Drill Spikes, since they increase both the Damage, DOT, Tear, AND Knockdown Power of the shot! I'd say this makes them far better to use than Knockdown Power coils, since you get all of the other increases too.
Awesome content and help. Thank you. Loved the photos at the end.. I love taking a great screenshot in games. They have inspired me with great concepts and better angles.
not long since i completed ng+ never used spike throwers but after watching this might just give them a try on my next playthrough of forbidden west. playing through zero dawn at the moment new game from scratch done enough ng pluses on zero dawn : )
Nice! Yeah give spike throwers a try on your next playthrough. To be perfectly honest with you, I really only use drill spikes for knockdowns. I don’t really use explosive spikes much, but they are fun! That’s cool you’re doing another playthrough of HZD. HZD will always be something special for me 😄
Really informative! I've become a huge fan of this weapon type. I like to use the propelled spikes to hit something very far away. Great for bringing down a storm bird for instance so you can move in and hammer it with arrows. Keep up the good work. How about a blastslings masterclass?
Thanks! Glad to hear you found it helpful 😄 And that’s an interesting strat to knock down flying machines with a Propelled Spike. I’ll have to give that trick a try. Thanks for sharing it!

Hi Sophie! Good to see you here 😄 Glad you liked this video and thanks for letting me know you’d like to see a knockdown video! And thanks for your help over on Reddit, I still need to dive back into testing those damage multipliers…
Hey Artix. Hope you are having a good week so far. If you please, I have three technical questions for you, but if anyone else here knows the answers, please do share. Question One: Does TEARING off a machine part/component instantly deduct a predetermined amount of health points from said machine's total health pool? I ask because I only played on Very Hard once and it was months ago. All my subsequent runs so far have always been on Ultra Hard and, as you know, there are no health bars on UltraHard. Question Two: Is this predetermined health point deduction larger when the component is DESTROYED as opposed to TORN off? Again, I can't tell. Please do clarify. Question Three: Is it just me, or do chain reactions inflict a rather high amount of damage? By chain reaction, I do NOT mean chain burst valor. I mean the chain reaction damage done by shooting cannisters with the appropriate elemental arrows. Again, I can't tell because, even with the damage numbers ON in the settings menu, the game does not give the amount.
Hey Emeka! I’m having a busy weak at work, but all good things. Hope you are doing well too. Ok so for your questions: 1) Yes, tearing off a component does indeed deal a pre-determined chunk of damage to the machine’s health. The exact values vary depending on the component and machine. Some are a small amount of damage and some are a sizable chunk. 2) Tearing the component off deals more damage than destroying it in most cases. The devs definitely wanted us to play strategically to dismantle machines as opposed to just destroying them with raw damage. This fits the game’s theme in my opinion, but raw damage playstyles (explosives, Braced Shot, etc.) are still totally valid. 3) Triggering canisters explosions (chain reactions) do indeed deal a nice chunk of damage. Again, this fits the theme of playing more tactically.
@@ArktixOfficial Thanks a lot for the detailed reply Arktix. I did in fact notice that machines were going down A LOT faster on Ultra Hard whenever I focused on quickly tearing off components/ parts. This is especially obvious on the Apex ThunderJaw. Thanks for corroborating my suspicions. This also explains why the new shredder gauntlet, the final chapter, is so effective on Ultra Hard. When coiled for AGILITY or CONCENTRATION, the fourth throw from the advanced shredder ammo has the highest TEAR potential in the entire game right now. I was surprised by how effective it was on Apex Machines. It would be nice to know exactly how much damage cannister chain reaction inflict. The damage is quite good. Incidentally, I am torn between close range coils and concentration coils for my vindicator drill spike. 1s world problems...I know. Thoughts?
Hey Emeka! For your Vindicator, I would use concentration over close range personally. The 25% on the close range coils is tempting, but unless you mostly/always stand less than 10m away when using the spikes the coils are kinda wasted. The concentration coils are way more flexible!

@@ArktixOfficial Np! Looking forward to it!
I've learned so much from your videos. Leaving a comment as well as a like to push algorithm because you deserve it.
Hey thanks a lot! I really appreciate that. And glad you’re finding my videos helpful!
Love this! As others have mentioned, your videos have made me pick up the game again many times. The deepened understanding of the mechanics immensely increased my enjoyment of the game as well. Thank you for another excellent video
Love to hear that! 😄 It’s always my goal to help people enjoy the game more! Glad that has been true for you 😊
Thank you. A true master class. At first glance it seemed long but it turned out it was worth every second. Thanks.
Thank you! Glad you found it worth your time 😄
Thanks So much for this video cuz i really love spike throwers
Cool! Glad you liked it 😄
@@ArktixOfficial So Yeah i Thought proppelled spike does the same amount of damage with splitting spike, and i thought spike mine was the weakest soo yeah thanks.
@@ArktixOfficial it is also why I prefer the Seeker bow over the Scourge to deliver frost build up: for me it's thematic.
Gotcha yeah. The Seeker name does fit Aloy better
Hey thx. U are the best Horizon UA-camr I’ve found. Just wanted to thank u for ur good content.
Wow thanks! That’s very kind 😊 Glad you’re enjoying my content! 😄
Great video as always! I tried using spike throwers once I got stuck with Arena challenges and I must say it was a revelation for me! It made a huuge difference!
Thank you! And oh yes, they're excellent in the Arena!
The Spike Thrower is surprisingly good. I used it to take down down a Slaughterspine comboed with my favorite heavy weapon the Boltblaster. Another helpful and well-made video.
Thanks! And yeah Spike Throwers are very strong!
Thank you so much for this! Didn’t even know that machine master had the spike thrower skills! This video and your video of mid game weapons improved my game enjoyment immensely. I really didn’t know how to properly play this game till now!
You’re very welcome! Glad you found it helpful 😄 And the mid game weapons one too! Thanks for your comment!
Yes! That’s definitely a good tip. Thanks or sharing it! 👍 I don’t think I’ve mentioned it in a video actually…probably should lol 😅
I used an explosive spike thrower almost exclusively in the final fight! It seems to have made the fight a whole lot easier and I didn't use any weapon techniques! I also only use spike throwers on those nasty Slitherfangs!
Nice! Yeah Spike Throwers are very powerful!
I just love spikethrowers! I used the skykiller spikethrower to beat the game and some diffucult challenges and its (not ng+) in my opinion the best spikethrower for damage.
Nice! Glad you enjoy spikethrowers 😁
Your videos are the manual the game should have come with. Thanks so much!
I love the spikethrowers, my only gripe with them is that neither the 1st or 2nd legendary get drill spikes
Ah yeah, that’s my grip too. I’m hoping for legendary drill spikes in the DLC!
Thanks! And yes good tip! 👍
Good stuff. I watched a couple of ur other videos and was exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks

@@ArktixOfficial Sorry to ask this. How do you change the tips on ur spears and bow? You have a cool one that drills!! If you don’t have time i understand.
Ah well you don’t change the tips. I’m just changing ammo types via the weapon wheel. The spikes that drill are called drill spikes and certain spike throwers have them (Vindicator and Spinthorn for example)
Thank you. I was sleeping on these until you explained them.
Awesome! Glad this was helpful to you 😄
I waited this video like my own birthday😏😏
Haha awesome! I hope you liked it!
Another brilliant and insightful video by Artix. Great way to roundup a weekend.

definitely want a video about how knockdown works.
Thank you so much man!
You’re very welcome! Glad you liked this 😄 I covered knockdown in my most recent vid on types!
ua-cam.com/video/esPTnc1KnmU/v-deo.html
Drill spikes are my favorite, they are relatively cheap to make, and I usually freeze the machine before, not sure if that does anything extra to it, but it must.
Nice! And freezing them first is totally a good move. All your drill spike damage is doubled while the machine is frozen!
Another great video! Thank you.
You’re very welcome! Glad you liked it 😄
I've been running spike throwers since my first playthrough.
Nice! Yeah Spike Throwers really make the difference for some players. I love the drill spikes myself!
Thank you so much with this video i was really trying master the spike thrower and you made it SO much more easier
You’re very welcome! Happy to hear this helped you 😄

the way you edit your video is soo good. it makes them so fun to watch.
Hey thanks Leo! I'm glad to hear you think so! I do try to make them both informative and entertaining.
For me Spike Throwing was what made this game. It was more satisfying than shooting arrows. It was closish combat that lead to an adrenaline rush. So much fun with this skill.
Nice! Yeah spikes are a lot of fun. I'm partial to the drill spikes myself, but explosives are fun too!
Just found your channel and the content is A+! I am learning much about the game and already have changed my play style!
Welcome John! Happy to have you here and glad to hear you're finding my content helpful!
Cool! Hope you were able to pick up some tips!

Great points! Yeah the Boltblasters are pretty one-dimensional whereas the Spike Throwers are more versatile.
You are WAAAAYYY to underrated you deserve more subs, and in fact you just earned a new one
Haha thanks Jomy! I really appreciate your sub! 😄
As always, a fantastic instructional guide! Your very thorough but concise videos have helped me become a much better player, and I'm gearing up to give Ultra Duper Hard Mode a try soon.
Haha yes 😄 That’s a cool build with Defiance. Thanks for sharing it Paris! Also, did you mean to post this comment twice?
@@ArktixOfficial Of course, double the fun! Nah system fluke, just deleted the other
Haha ok yeah I figured =)
Your videos helped me get through some of the harder machines! Keep up the good work!!
Awesome! I’m happy to hear that 😄 Thanks!
I hope you have a play through already on your page- i would love to watch you play this game.
I do actually! I put it on pause a while ago so I could focus on making my other content, but I’m looking to pick the playthrough up again via a stream soon 👍
Thank you so glad that I could actually understand you
Thanks! Glad you found these tips helpful 😁
This video was So Helpful! Thank you for all the work you put into this!
Thanks! Glad to hear you found it helpful!
It's funny. From mid-to late-game, with ALL the legendary or rare weapons, I always turn to the Spike Thrower. I use two different ones in my loadout and rarely use any other weapon.
@8:20 I know you threw the drill spike in that spot on purpose to match what you were saying 🤣
😁
Amazing tips, as always! Thank you. Especially the aiming part was super helpful for me.
Thank you! Glad you found the aiming tips helpful 😄
Ah yeah so what's going on there is the drill spikes deal damage over a large area, so they aren't good for farming sac webbing.
Please people could we press the like button as these videos takes a lot of hard work from Arktix and he's the HFW legend thank you 👍😁
Haha thanks Football Asylum 😄

More quality content from Arktix. Thank-you my guy.
Thanks Matthew! Glad you think so 😄
Great. Thank you, splikes are the weapons I use more
That’s great to hear! Thanks!
Excellent! Thank you for these master class videos.
Thanks! I hope these tips were helpful!
not long since i completed ng+ never used spike throwers but after watching this might just give them a try on my next playthrough of forbidden west. playing through zero dawn at the moment new game from scratch done enough ng pluses on zero dawn : )
Nice! Yeah give spike throwers a try on your next playthrough. To be perfectly honest with you, I really only use drill spikes for knockdowns. I don’t really use explosive spikes much, but they are fun! That’s cool you’re doing another playthrough of HZD. HZD will always be something special for me 😄
@@ArktixOfficial thanks will definitley give them a go next playthrough

Really informative! I've become a huge fan of this weapon type. I like to use the propelled spikes to hit something very far away. Great for bringing down a storm bird for instance so you can move in and hammer it with arrows. Keep up the good work. How about a blastslings masterclass?
Thanks! Glad to hear you found it helpful 😄 And that’s an interesting strat to knock down flying machines with a Propelled Spike. I’ll have to give that trick a try. Thanks for sharing it!

Would LOVE to see a video exclusively about knock down! And fantastic video as always. Btw, I am Sophie from Reddit (the one who discussed damage multipliers with you) 😁
Ok so for your questions:
1) Yes, tearing off a component does indeed deal a pre-determined chunk of damage to the machine’s health.
