Yeah I loved playing Wind Waker HD with the gamepad. Was very immersive when sailing and using a map in a dungeon. On the fly item management too. Twilight Princess HD’s gamepad functionality was great too, but I couldve probably used my pro controller and enjoyed it just as much. Wind Waker HD needs the gamepad IMO.
I mean, he has always defended it, he has shown a great affection and seems that it really hurts him that it failed and that it was victim of a ton of horrible choices taken... He always saw that much potential on it. Soy un Gran fan!
The reason why Persona Q was exclusive to 3DS was because it's a crossover between Persona and Etrian Odyssey, and the Etrian Odyssey games were only released on DS/3DS because they're based on dual-screen functionality
Persona Q2 was done so late into the 3DS' life that it never got dubbed, and it was barely released here in the UK, I haven't seen a single copy of the game.

A lot of games made use of DS and 3DS in such unique ways because of the dual screens they had. I honestly found that so exciting back then, even visual novels like 999, Ghost Trick used two screens for dual narrative. Rhythm games had score/story and actual beat maps on other screen, It was such a unique console.
It was also really great for strategy games. Strategy games and strategy RPG's always are kind of worse on console simply because sticks aren't as fast or accurate as a mouse. But the touch-pad helted that tremendously. Fire Emblem, advance wars, yugioh and other such games just fit perfectly. Having the bottom we clear facts and the top be exciting angles kind of gives you the best of both.
The DS release of 999 had QoL issues, but man, the moment you realize exactly why it's on the ds and how the gameplay's presentation changes to reflect that plot point was stellar; just can't be captured by a port.
The dual screens of the DS and 3DS really did allow for such unique and interesting game design that I don’t think will ever be replicated on normal consoles

This reminds of an idea I had for a game in a universe where Nintendo kept Rare. It's a Kazooie only spin-off game of Banjo-Kazooie for the Wii that kinda worked like a top down twin stick shooter. You'd move Kazooie with the Nunchuck and aim 'n' shoot different types of eggs with the Wiimote.
Sounds cool. Kind of reminds me of the Sparx levels in Spyro but different enough Kazooie abilities or like the Banjo first person shooter moments (never played or know the context but always looked cool) using Kazooie but top down/isometric.
When Wii U was announced, one of the first things they showed off was 5-player asymmetrical gameplay. One on the gamepad overlooking the whole stage, and the other four playing on the stage. - What annoys me is that they didn't do 5-player symmetrical gameplay. Like playing Mario Kart where you have 4 players on the TV and the 5th on the gamepad.
I think it would have been too constraining on the hardware to do 5 player Mario Kart. It could barely handle 4 people. However, I cannot believe they screwed up NSMBU multiplayer by relegating the gamepad to player "assistance".
Game & Wario had a few game modes that did, such as the Fruit game mode. One person was a thief that wandered around a dimly-lit crowded area stealing fruit, and the the others watched the TV to guess who the thief was. The thief was on the gamepad and had perfect vision.
i’ve always seen on rails shooters as arcade games, but like modern ones that you see in bowling alleys or shopping malls because if you’ve been to game works or Dave and Buster, some of the funnest games are on rail shooters
Same. Though playing The Club a more arcade level design and enemy AI but modern controlling shooter (published by Sega but made by the team that made Project Gotham Racing a bunch of arcade racer Devs) it is always interesting seeing modern and arcade elements cross over sometimes but whether to see them as arcade or not hmm. I mean later Burnout games don't have the timer but the old ones are straight up arcade with the timers. So modern arcade games it's a wonder sometimes. It's why I don't question the Dead Space Extraction or Medal of Honor Heroes 2 (arcade light gun style mode) being more arcade focused or a mode for arcade aspects to suit the Wiimote as a rail shooter/light gun shooter. I think Tank Tank Tank is a fair arcade game but on Wii U and didn't do much with the Gamepad really. It's fine but for the multiplayer the singleplayer the second screen isn't worth it and the tilting of gyro is left and right not up or down when your a tank so why no up and down aim. Logic there Namco. It's no Steel Battalion on Xbox or Kinect that's for sure. Kinect or big controller the big controller makes more sense then Kinect to try and change that I think but Capcom tried Scott could do this video type again and add Steel Battalion or other games, maybe but as he only did the Kinect one and not the OG Xbox version might have to wait on that one.
So the thing with spinoffs being on other consoles is due to contract obligations and IP rights. Destiny 2 was on PC and XBOX, but for a time but they still had to pay lip service to Sony due to obligations they had (i.e exclusive content). This sort of obligation kind of works the same way at the franchise level. Like sure, you might get Persona Strikers on Xbox, but if you want the full Persona experience, you're gonna have to buy a Playstation. That's why it 'works'. ...It also made me realize you should NEVER make a deal with Sony.
The WiiU was one of the best concepts with the worst support. Nintendo was desperate to get new 3rd party titles on there. When I was a freshman I applied for their developer program and got in within a day with no questions asked and given the Unity WiiU api. I didn't do too much since it cost like 1200 dollars for a dev kit but it was cool to see how unreal and unity games communicated with the system.
I just got a Wii u from my friend today. I've been wanting one for so long. The gamepad is a lot bigger than I thought and the Wii u it's self is so heavy compared to the original wii
all of the developers really didn't realize the potential of the wii u when it was still alive....it makes nintendo's mismanagement of the sytems public image all the more frustrating in hindsight. if they didn't confuse everybody, and it had defined audience and a audience at all, it could have been the wii 2 in some regards.
Wii U is my favorite console! Although it's not the best, it had a lot of care put into it and I spent more hours playing it than all of my other consoles combined.
Just minus the parallax barrier... Oh damn, imagine if the Wii U's tablet controller utilized that technology?! Instead of only 12 people buying it, a whole 14 or even 15 people would have bought it!

A lot of advanced technology in it and had to ability to run games so they'll run amazing and look good, but it's support was abysmal and thus having fewer games and ended up being for mostly indie games. That's where the potential was wasted.
at the end, Scott's right. there was a lot of missed potential for the Wii U. Even though it was a flawed product to begin with (big stupid controller, can't reassign gamepads to different controllers, etc.) it was heavily under utilized. Batman arkham City was the game that I think did the most with the Wii U gamepad, and really showed off it's potential. But, there was still potential for it to not be a failure if Nintendo just did things right.

I've never played an FPS on a Wiimote that really felt right, because I always figured something like that would actually be the superior control format for the genre. If for no other fact that the fact you don't have to invert it. Inverters, non-inverters, and whicheverers can all use the Wiimote intuitively as an FPS controller.
The thing is, the switch could not succeed where the three Nintendo consoles before it excelled. Because I couldn't play Legend of Zelda Windwaker on switch, while I could on gamecube, wii, and wii u.
Time Crisis 4 on the PS3 with the GunCon is absolutely amazing, would love to see it come back on PS5. Gun accessories are always worth it. Especially with how expensive games have gotten, I wonder how much a Time Crisis game would cost with a gun now--I think it was $100 back in like 2009.

3:52 They ended up doing this for the 3DS edition of Minecraft, the bottom screen showed a map and your inventory, while the top screen showed your health, hunger, and armor bars. Overall probably the coolest version of Minecraft even if it’s outdated compared to modern MC.
Fun fact. They had an spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness called Shadows of the Eternals that was being kick started that looked incredibly promising for the Wii U. However I think the game was being developed at the same time Mighty No 9 was also being kick started? So the game got completely ignored and no one funded it leaving them to scrap the game entirely. It made me so sad as a dedicated Eternal Darkness fan I really wanted to see more of this franchise especially with today's knowledge of game design and hardware. There is so much polish and ideas they could go crazy with that involves the sanity system and time travel. It would have been amazing, and since that kick starter there has been no follow up so it's very unlikely we'll ever get anything related to Eternal Darkness. :c

I made a list of missed opportunities for the Wii U. Here: * Mario Paint/Artist sequel and/or remake that uses touch screen * Four Swords Adventures port/remake/sequel that uses online with voice chat and 3DS connectivity * Pokémon Snap Wii U that has a panoramic view using the Gamepad * Animal Crossing that features all menu information on the bottom screen while, making for a the most comfortable Animal Crossing experience on a home console * Kid Icarus Uprising port/remake that uses the touch screen, the wii pointer and nunchuck, dual analog, and maybe 3DS as controller options * Metroid Prime that features a first person view on the TV and 3rd person on Gamepad and the ability to swap views * Wario Ware that not only uses the Gamepad’s unique touch, gyro, buttons, asymmetric TV view, camera(?), and microphone features, but can sometimes combine it with the Wii remote * A Zelda game similar to Phantom Hourglass and/or Spirit Tracks that’s either a remake or a sequel with similar gameplay elements
I thought Scott was gonna point it out when Fever was on screen, but. Why the absolute frick wasn't Rhythm Heaven Megamix ported?! It would have been a great cross-platform release with the 3DS, and taking advantage of the gamepad would be making a no visuals mode which is *just* the gamepad that shows your timing and skill stars. It would be a great way to practice no visual gameplay! And not to mention that it would be a fantastic family game, it already *has* competitive multiplayer, being able to play on one console would make the whole "Get your family and friends into music!" shtick fantastic!
I'm shocked, hearing Scott say that Call of Duty, a FPS that requires pinpoint precision and split second reaction time to play online multiplayer was a perfect fit for the Wii U... For a second I thought I was watching IGN
The splitscreen thing is cool though if you play local and don't want vertical or horizontal screen space taken up. I don't own the COD Wii U versions but ZombiU had multiplayer similar and unique to the system even if based around posts to capture it was still splitscreen multiplayer. Never heard journos talk motion ever in praise. But I agree the statement/sentence is very up there. Even reading a Nintendo Life article about console features I laughed at their picks of features mostly simple stuff like themes, the DS library and Miiverse not anything the consoles did at all. So there is another answer of why bother. Journalists don't care and they aren't intelligent even to use the consoles and come up with ideas like many of us fans of gaming do, but only certain audiences that are fairly small do care about this stuff and think a lot about controller possibilities to waste our thinking time XD. I think about tons of things games on the Wii U can do let alone how to improve it but most people want typical games. Which is fine but these companies can make the same games and people buy them over and over they try too dramatic and nope it's like their out of their minds for some reason when Devs want to be creative not a factory line of sequels. But too much saturation and complaining customers are annoying as much as they are important. XD I think Skull and Bones is a fine concept but one no one will play other than a small audience and then will abandon the game. It being a thing in AC3&4 sure but more focus no one wants to play like many people don't want to play vehicles so those are niche genre games.
The DS they had fine ideas of drawing on the DS in Zelda, the closing and opening it to imprint the map, the cutscene angles in Prime Hunters and Mario and DK/Mario Vs DK (no idea which), Four Swords Anniversary on Wii U and the others like he said and over time they just had less ideas or it sold so bad they gave up. I have my own ideas for how it could be expanded like how the Xbox One dashboard was, webpage/manual and game on either screen than o ly the game being allowed for both (phone or PC have flexibility why can't a console it took the Series consoles to have this app/game single screen flexibility of a phone even sigh). It's sad honestly. I hope the Galaxy Fold and Surface Duo can keep dual screens alive and apps/games offer good ideas or else that's a disappointment in itself too.
11:18 I think the structure of moons in odyssey also works well with the switch because you can hop on, grab a few quick moons, and then be done. The lands are so large you don’t feel pushed to finish it all in one sitting

Punch-Out!! on the 3DS would have jumpscared you when you started a fight.

I think Sonic & All-Star Racing Transformed let you do 5 player races, with one of them on the gamepad.
Game & Wario had a few game modes that did, such as the Fruit game mode. One person was a thief that wandered around a dimly-lit crowded area stealing fruit, and the the others watched the TV to guess who the thief was. The thief was on the gamepad and had perfect vision.
I liked 5 player Ray Man Legends and 5 player New Super Mario Bros U/Luigi U.
i’ve always seen on rails shooters as arcade games, but like modern ones that you see in bowling alleys or shopping malls because if you’ve been to game works or Dave and Buster, some of the funnest games are on rail shooters
Same. Though playing The Club a more arcade level design and enemy AI but modern controlling shooter (published by Sega but made by the team that made Project Gotham Racing a bunch of arcade racer Devs) it is always interesting seeing modern and arcade elements cross over sometimes but whether to see them as arcade or not hmm.
I mean later Burnout games don't have the timer but the old ones are straight up arcade with the timers.
So modern arcade games it's a wonder sometimes.
It's why I don't question the Dead Space Extraction or Medal of Honor Heroes 2 (arcade light gun style mode) being more arcade focused or a mode for arcade aspects to suit the Wiimote as a rail shooter/light gun shooter.
I think Tank Tank Tank is a fair arcade game but on Wii U and didn't do much with the Gamepad really. It's fine but for the multiplayer the singleplayer the second screen isn't worth it and the tilting of gyro is left and right not up or down when your a tank so why no up and down aim. Logic there Namco.
It's no Steel Battalion on Xbox or Kinect that's for sure. Kinect or big controller the big controller makes more sense then Kinect to try and change that I think but Capcom tried
Scott could do this video type again and add Steel Battalion or other games, maybe but as he only did the Kinect one and not the OG Xbox version might have to wait on that one.
So the thing with spinoffs being on other consoles is due to contract obligations and IP rights. Destiny 2 was on PC and XBOX, but for a time but they still had to pay lip service to Sony due to obligations they had (i.e exclusive content). This sort of obligation kind of works the same way at the franchise level. Like sure, you might get Persona Strikers on Xbox, but if you want the full Persona experience, you're gonna have to buy a Playstation. That's why it 'works'.
...It also made me realize you should NEVER make a deal with Sony.

The WiiU was one of the best concepts with the worst support. Nintendo was desperate to get new 3rd party titles on there. When I was a freshman I applied for their developer program and got in within a day with no questions asked and given the Unity WiiU api. I didn't do too much since it cost like 1200 dollars for a dev kit but it was cool to see how unreal and unity games communicated with the system.

all of the developers really didn't realize the potential of the wii u when it was still alive....it makes nintendo's mismanagement of the sytems public image all the more frustrating in hindsight. if they didn't confuse everybody, and it had defined audience and a audience at all, it could have been the wii 2 in some regards.
And my, oh my, what a truly long story it is.
I still have mine and still enjoy it.
Wii U is my favorite console! Although it's not the best, it had a lot of care put into it and I spent more hours playing it than all of my other consoles combined.

@@lasarousi Here's the thing about the vita: it was amazing. A lot of advanced technology in it and had to ability to run games so they'll run amazing and look good, but it's support was abysmal and thus having fewer games and ended up being for mostly indie games.
That's where the potential was wasted.

at the end, Scott's right. there was a lot of missed potential for the Wii U. Even though it was a flawed product to begin with (big stupid controller, can't reassign gamepads to different controllers, etc.) it was heavily under utilized. Batman arkham City was the game that I think did the most with the Wii U gamepad, and really showed off it's potential. But, there was still potential for it to not be a failure if Nintendo just did things right.

I've never played an FPS on a Wiimote that really felt right, because I always figured something like that would actually be the superior control format for the genre. If for no other fact that the fact you don't have to invert it. Inverters, non-inverters, and whicheverers can all use the Wiimote intuitively as an FPS controller.

Time Crisis 4 on the PS3 with the GunCon is absolutely amazing, would love to see it come back on PS5. Gun accessories are always worth it. Especially with how expensive games have gotten, I wonder how much a Time Crisis game would cost with a gun now--I think it was $100 back in like 2009.
Rhythm heaven on switch would be a good fit with the rumble helping more with the feel of the games, like you're actually playing them.

Fun fact. They had an spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness called Shadows of the Eternals that was being kick started that looked incredibly promising for the Wii U. However I think the game was being developed at the same time Mighty No 9 was also being kick started? So the game got completely ignored and no one funded it leaving them to scrap the game entirely. It made me so sad as a dedicated Eternal Darkness fan I really wanted to see more of this franchise especially with today's knowledge of game design and hardware. There is so much polish and ideas they could go crazy with that involves the sanity system and time travel. It would have been amazing, and since that kick starter there has been no follow up so it's very unlikely we'll ever get anything related to Eternal Darkness. :c

I made a list of missed opportunities for the Wii U. Here:
* Mario Paint/Artist sequel and/or remake that uses touch screen
* Four Swords Adventures port/remake/sequel that uses online with voice chat and 3DS connectivity
* Pokémon Snap Wii U that has a panoramic view using the Gamepad
* Animal Crossing that features all menu information on the bottom screen while, making for a the most comfortable Animal Crossing experience on a home console
* Kid Icarus Uprising port/remake that uses the touch screen, the wii pointer and nunchuck, dual analog, and maybe 3DS as controller options
* Metroid Prime that features a first person view on the TV and 3rd person on Gamepad and the ability to swap views
* Wario Ware that not only uses the Gamepad’s unique touch, gyro, buttons, asymmetric TV view, camera(?), and microphone features, but can sometimes combine it with the Wii remote
* A Zelda game similar to Phantom Hourglass and/or Spirit Tracks that’s either a remake or a sequel with similar gameplay elements

Why the absolute frick wasn't Rhythm Heaven Megamix ported?! It would have been a great cross-platform release with the 3DS, and taking advantage of the gamepad would be making a no visuals mode which is *just* the gamepad that shows your timing and skill stars. It would be a great way to practice no visual gameplay! And not to mention that it would be a fantastic family game, it already *has* competitive multiplayer, being able to play on one console would make the whole "Get your family and friends into music!" shtick fantastic!

I'm shocked, hearing Scott say that Call of Duty, a FPS that requires pinpoint precision and split second reaction time to play online multiplayer was a perfect fit for the Wii U... For a second I thought I was watching IGN
The splitscreen thing is cool though if you play local and don't want vertical or horizontal screen space taken up. I don't own the COD Wii U versions but ZombiU had multiplayer similar and unique to the system even if based around posts to capture it was still splitscreen multiplayer.
Never heard journos talk motion ever in praise. But I agree the statement/sentence is very up there.
Even reading a Nintendo Life article about console features I laughed at their picks of features mostly simple stuff like themes, the DS library and Miiverse not anything the consoles did at all. So there is another answer of why bother. Journalists don't care and they aren't intelligent even to use the consoles and come up with ideas like many of us fans of gaming do, but only certain audiences that are fairly small do care about this stuff and think a lot about controller possibilities to waste our thinking time XD. I think about tons of things games on the Wii U can do let alone how to improve it but most people want typical games. Which is fine but these companies can make the same games and people buy them over and over they try too dramatic and nope it's like their out of their minds for some reason when Devs want to be creative not a factory line of sequels. But too much saturation and complaining customers are annoying as much as they are important. XD I think Skull and Bones is a fine concept but one no one will play other than a small audience and then will abandon the game. It being a thing in AC3&4 sure but more focus no one wants to play like many people don't want to play vehicles so those are niche genre games.

The DS they had fine ideas of drawing on the DS in Zelda, the closing and opening it to imprint the map, the cutscene angles in Prime Hunters and Mario and DK/Mario Vs DK (no idea which), Four Swords Anniversary on Wii U and the others like he said and over time they just had less ideas or it sold so bad they gave up. I have my own ideas for how it could be expanded like how the Xbox One dashboard was, webpage/manual and game on either screen than o ly the game being allowed for both (phone or PC have flexibility why can't a console it took the Series consoles to have this app/game single screen flexibility of a phone even sigh). It's sad honestly. I hope the Galaxy Fold and Surface Duo can keep dual screens alive and apps/games offer good ideas or else that's a disappointment in itself too.
