Flosstube #19--How I use my Elan Lapstand, Ott lights, Q-snaps and Scroll Rods

  • I show how I stitch in my stitchy spot, and show how I use my elan lapstand, my floor stand, my ott lights, my q-snaps, scroll rods and stretcher bars, and the different kinds of scroll rods. I forgot to show how it flips over so you can end a thread on the back!!!!! I so meant to, sigh. You just loosen that left knob a touch and the whole thing flips right over. I will demonstrate it in Flosstube #21 which I will film tomorrow (April 5).

    I use an Artisan Designs "Elan" lap frame and I have their floor frame as well. I have been using them for about 15 years. Would not part with them for the world. He is the husband of a stitcher who designed it to her specifications. I use it with Q-snaps and scroll rods, while I lean back with my feet up. I use the lap frame for everything except huge projects which I do on the floor frame. He is just a one man shop, and does not sell to retail shops anymore, but you can order from him directly at www.artisandesi.... I recently ordered a "back-up" Elan lap frame from him (in case I ever lose my luggage) and it came in 2-3 weeks.

    Decades ago, I found myself sewing with cartoons on the TV. It was a light-bulb moment. I realized that when I was sewing or any closeup project like needlework or crocheting to music, I would tire easily and quit. When I was doing those same projects while watching tv, I would last for hours longer. I decided that by lifting my eyes to the tv and refocusing them, they didn't tire as easily. So, I loved you mentioning watching the tv.

    This was the best accessories video I’ve ever seen. There aren’t too many out there and I learned a lot. I was never sure how to work Q snaps and now I’m going to try them. I have an expensive scroll system and am intimidated by it but now I’ll give it a go. I loved that you shared your room with us and were so confident and prepared that you were a delight to listen to. Thank you.

    "A process stitcher"... Finally an expression that defines my style. I too love the process of it, besides there isn't enough wall space in my house for all the projects I have. Stitching without worrying how and where it's going is nice. Thanks for the lovely video.

    Oh. My. Word! Your video is packed with information! I'm planning on getting back into embroidery. I located my old floor stand and it seems to be missing parts so I need to get a new one (I bought it in the 1970s). I could not decide if I wanted a lap frame or a floor stand and your video was perfect! I think I'm going to try to locate the Ergo Floor stand. If I really, really get into embroidery, I'll probably add the lap stand to it at a later date. I had hoped that the lap stand could be slipped under my thigh to hold it more securely than rocking around on my lap, but it doesn't look like that would work. In any case, thank you so much for this wonderful, wonderful video--you're the best!

    First , I luv your videos. I stitched back in the 90's and recently picked it back up. I was catching up today, 4/6. Your demonsatation of your lap stand and scroll rods was excellent. I called Artisan Designs and spoke with the owner, ordered the lap stand and a scroll rod. I wanted you to know that he watched your video today and loved it. He said it was done very well!!!! I have just come across your You tube chanel. I just loved the way you put it over. I felt like we had known each other for ever! I loved the way you just do exactly what makes you happy.. thats exactly what I do.It might not always be the 100% correct way (who knows what is 100%) but do exactly what makes one feel good and comfortable. I have also been stitching since a young girl, and my MOM was a prolific stitcher.. stitching till she passed (many many years ago) I looked on your Floss Tube 19 because I wanted to see if I could use a "LAP STAND" have tried before but decided against it as I know now that my little 3inch hoop is perfect for me. I have always stitched with that even though I do have bigger hoops including hoops on a stand etc. but keep going back to my little 3inch ring. I know it might sound silly.. but when you said " YOU STITCH THE WAY YOU DO" I thought thats me.. I feel comfortable with that.. and always take it off and fold my work when not in use. I'll keep in watching your flosstube and catch up with some newer ones. RUTH - SOUTH AFRICA

      Best practices...a term I used often during my 38 year RN career.
      Have even brought this very meaningful term into the Co-caregiver role I share with my younger brother, with our 95 yr. old mother...hebe.. he's NOT fond of it, but, to me, it means the best of all other choices!!!

    You should seriously take your pieces into an art show. You are obviously talented. It matters not if one stitches slower or faster. For me, it's the rhythm of the stitch that is so enjoyable for me, as a piece of art takes place. Wonderful video!

    Just found this channel & found our lives has progressed to a similar place!
    Liked & Subscribed...before you got into using your lap model!!!
    I stitch on my dark red microfiber recliner...person power used to close the foot rest.
    I currently using the 3 items on the Ott floor lamp; having to "fix" the end with the lamp & magnifier..
    Just snapped off of the adjustable tubing.
    Hehe, the Used, Häagen-Dazs chocolate bars w/ almond chips over coffee ice cream are coming on very handy, as I used them as splints. Oh, & wrapped it with Frog tape!
    On an especially tired afternoon, or evenings, I will add 3.5 magnifier "reading glasses over my very strong blended bifocals, as my near vision is changing, again.
    I wore my 1st pr of daily eyeglasses at 5 @1/2 years old...apparently I could not see the music printed in the Beginner books, during my piano lessons; every Saturday x 6 years.
    As I was told, eyeglasses were more necessary, back then, than the Orthadontia for my misaligned teeth.
    At 70, now. I stitch often daily, between 4 & 10 pm...time our for heating/reheating my supper. The 13 yr old black foster cat, Hoodo, just knows when to join me & have my eyes take a break...kneading the 4 layered blanket...to protect my skin from her very sharp claws!!! These short breaks maybe from 5 min, to 20 minutes..
    If she is the recipient of a head massage, chin scratching...with her head pointed up, eyes closed & still purring...BEST MUSIC for MY soul!
    I use an end table for the design board to hold floss already separated, use several needle holders with "I fill" needles, of 7 of the current colors...
    My Water glass (stainless steel with a cap & straw) is filled with fresh ice cubes & cold water.
    During these hot days, I have 2 fans making cross-current air exchanges...
    I occasionally have the TV on, but found out, when watching UA-cam on my large TV, there are 5 x more ads, than when watching on my phone.
    Commenting on the UA-cam channels must be done on my phone & for close camera shots, I use both....
    How about other stitchers... what does your nest look like?

I was getting tired of the patterns that were available in the 90s in the only stores that carried them, and was enjoying some other hobbies, and then the internet exploded in the 2000s and I fell in love again with all the new designs that appealed to me, the new fibers, the new fabrics, it just went on and on!!! I have the Elan lap frame and all the different scroll rods. I love it. I think now I will have to check out the Gazelle floor frame. I have a quilting floor frame but it is only good for quilting. I also have a large quilting frame that I rarely use. I need a room just to store all my frames!! You did an excellent presentation on how you use each frame. I also like how you showed where you stitch and how you stitch. I think that would be so helpful for beginning stitchers. I love the addition you added to your house. A person needs all the sunshine they can get. We had our balcony enclosed and I wanted a lot of light. We added four good size windows that gives us plenty of light. The balcony was 30 foot long but only a little over six feet wide. I told my husband we didn’t need the extra square footage but I am glad we did it. I like your chair, too. I know that the arms of my chair tend to get in the way. Think I will look into getting a chair in the style you stitch on. We are due to get new furniture so will keep my eye out for a new stitching chair. Thank you for sharing your stitching place!❤️

    I have 2 stands. I'm not sure who makes them. The foot area is smaller and by placing the clam in the middle (with a price of scrap quilted fabric between the clap and fabric) I can work it from the front. Or if I work on it the way you do from the side. I love the information on the difference roller bars,as I'm in the market for some more sets. Which one to you prefer? Both of my sets have the mesh on them and I'm not really fond of them. I have also found that I love soda stitch patterns, because of you. I started out as a needlepoint person, making large pictures and pillows, but it is a very expensive hobby. All my hobbies are self taught. Although I've been cross stitching for years I didn't know a lot of the terms are the accessories, your videos have helped me a lot.
    Thank you

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  4 роки тому

      Hi Cheri!! I am so glad the video was helpful :) I am also self-taught on most of the handwork I have done over the years. Although my grandmother and mother taught me to crochet and knit, and quilt. And yes, I keep looking into needlepoint and realizing how expensive the canvases are, and then you add all the specialty fibers, lol. They are gorgeous though. I really like the scroll rods I am using in the video, from Artisan Design. But you do have to have plenty of extra fabric at the top and the bottom so you have enough to feed under that little piece of wood and then roll it around once to hold it in place. I really like what I have seen and heard about Rolaframes, and how they work with the split rail with small nails inside that hold it in place. But I have not bought any yet. And I REALLY admire the "Millennial frames" in the UK, but I would have to order them from the UK and they are pricey, but they look amazing :)

Due to illness my life came to a screeching halt so now I stitch all day between naps. I have been shocked by the stitching communities and new products that I have no idea what are or why I would need them. I got my first needle minder in a box from fat quarter shop and tried it thinking there was no way it would work, love it. There are still other items I don't understand. I have also acquired more projects buy I still prefer to be a monogamous stitcher.

In the meantime, I talk a little bit about how I fold the fabric over in my q-snaps in video #32. I realized about 6 years ago that the arms of my fluffy/comfy stitching chair were driving me crazy. So I went shopping for a chair without arms and found an inexpensive one at Big Lots. I used it for several years but it was the hardest "stuffed" chair I have ever sat on!! Even with a special "egg" cushion! So when we did the new addition and I moved my stitching nest I went shopping again and bounced on every chair I found. Incidentally, it is really hard to find a stuffed comfy chair without arms!!! I finally found this one, it was not cheap, but I love it so much.

    Bless you. I have been on every site and groups asking how to stop the q snap from moving up and down, and you are the only one who has given me the answer. Right now I am using Michaels brand Hoop and Loop floor stand. I do punch needle and not only must the material be drum tight, but my frame must be stable and I couldn’t get that using the q snap on the floor stand. So know I will make sure that my q snap snap on cover will not move.

    Hi Brenda!I did not understand for a long time how to embroider with two hands. I tried and threw it several times until I saw one girl embroidering with two hands. I noticed how her hands are located and I did it. need to position the left handabove, and right to work from below. upper left, lower right. I tried and it works. For more than a year now I've been embroidering with two hands)))

    I don't always frame my finished work. Smaller items are often made into tote bags or front pockets for tote bags. I made one for my bff and she had me put clear vinyl over it to give the cross stitch some protection.
    If you don't like making tote bags, I've made a cross-stitch into a pocket and placed it over some advertisment printed on the bag... Now it looks like a custom bag instead of a store bag.
    I've even quilted my crossstitch pocket to give it some depth/texture.
    This gets my work out of the box and I get to use it and enjoy it's beauty. 💖🌞🌵😷

      @@Handworkmaniac , there's lots you can make with the smaller ones. I've seen them on the fronts of aprons or jumpers. There's always cushions (I'd put them on chair backs, but some people sit on them). I've seen them on backs of jackets and coats or even suspenders. In Victorian times most garments (even men's) were heavily embroidered. Since you're a process sewist, consider making designs that can be made into garments. You don't even have to make the garments. There are so many period garment makers that would buy embroideries to put into their garments, both underwear and outerwear. With today's internet the world is at your feet. And if they don't sell... not a problem, you made them for the pleasure of stitching. The selling is just a bonus! (Of course take photos of your work for those nostalgic days when you want to look back at your makes.) 💖🌞🌵😷

      @Handworkmaniac  3 роки тому

      Yay!! It took me a few weeks to get used to mine as well. It was just a different stitching position that I had to get used to. Now, instead of using my left hand to hold/balance the q-snap and try and reach my left-hand fingers to the back of the stitching, I can just keep my left hand at the back, to help guide the needle when I am coming back up. And yes, my neck and left shoulder and left wrist are much, much happier now :)

Now I live in Nevada, but before coming here I lived in Eastern Europe and we had there a lot of gloomy autumn and winter days. Nevada is very sunny every season and I thought Utah is the same.
    I liked your story very much and will go on watching your other videos. Thank you!

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  5 років тому

      Thank You!! Yes, in general, Utah has mostly sunny days as we are a relatively hot and dry state. But not as many sunny days as Nevada!! My office at work has no windows, and my home did not have any south facing windows before the new addition we did. In the winter the sun moves so far south on the horizon that it did not shine very much in my house. And the shorter days meant there was only about 45 minutes of daylight after work before it got dark. But I fell very blessed to live in a sunny state :) Wow, Eastern Europe!! That is amazing. I have been to western Europe once when I was in college, it was gorgeous. I would like to see Eastern Europe some day.

    Thank you for your video! I bought the élan stand because of this video. I finally just got it today! It is beautiful! Thank you so much for the recommendation. I tried to watch four other videos on the élan stand, and they were new to it, and just fumbling to put it together. Yours is the best video out there. I’ve already used some of your hints, about the little wood insert they give you to use with Q snaps. I was using both of them, I didn’t realize we only need to use one. You told me to rotate the Q snap clip out of the way when I put it in the clamp, and that has made all the difference for it fitting in there tightly. I couldn’t get it to clamp down tight enough. Only problem with it that I can see is that if you don’t have it on the highest height setting, and you put it in a lower slot, you cannot rotate the position of your frame because the knob on top hits the adjustment bar on the side. So you pretty much have to have it on the tallest setting, which is not convenient.
    I was hoping I could do two-handed stitching, however I am thinking I will not be able to because my left hand on top is hitting the clamp. I have it set up for the right handed position so that I can get my hand around to the back of the frame, however then my left hand hits the clamp when I’m trying to move it around and do two-handed stitching. However I think I will still enjoy that I don’t have to hold my Q snap in hand any longer. Thank you again!

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Padma! So glad you are liking the stand :) Your top knob should not be hitting the side bar, no matter which height setting it is on. Your stand should have come with some metal washers and one wooden washer. Make sure that wooden washer is in between the clamp and the arm, it is there as a spacer to keep the knob from hitting the side bar. The wooden washer should NOT be between the side arm and the side knob. I hope that makes sense. Also, with two-handed stitching one hand always stays on top and one hand always stays on the bottom, and they don't ever move. So they should not be hitting the arm or the clamp. I hope you can find a way to make it comfortable and work for you :) Don't be afraid to try it in all different angles and positions to see what is comfortable for you. And best wishes!

    • @padmarubiales5184
      @padmarubiales5184 3 роки тому

      @@Handworkmaniac hey there again! I came up with a workaround in that I removed the clamp knob and put it back on the front of the side bar, as I had it behind the side bar. And as I mentioned, it was hitting the side when I I had it on the lower position. But you were absolutely right!! Not only did I have the wood washer on the outside of the sidebar, I had it on the lower knob that connects to the base. I have now moved it between the clamp and the side bar on the upper knob, and the problem is solved. Thank you so much! You really know the stand well! 😀🌻🌼

I couldn’t sleep because I was addicted to watching you and your enthusiasm, but after a while, I had to try and get some Z‘s. Today I’m enjoying this video about how you stitch. I have bifocals, and like you I have mono contacts where one is stronger than the other. I hardly wear contacts anymore because I’m not working and my glasses are so much easier. Oh my goodness!!! So glad you figured out a way to save it! I would have never even thought about it starting a fire or scorch something if I hadn't heard about it from some other stitchers a few years ago, what a crazy thing.

    This was the best video that I've found the both explained and showed how the frames work. I have been toying with the idea of getting one, and now I know I will be ordering one. Thank you so much!

      Thank You Syndy! I am so glad it was helpful. Choosing a frame from the many wonderful ones that are out there, is hard!!

    I am just like you. I have finished puzzles, paint by numbers and diamond paintings in my art room and they are just there. I just love to create something and now I have found cross stitching and flosstube!!!
