      Thank You Lorena! I'm glad it was helpful! I think I saved up for about three years before I bought my lapstand 15 years ago, and my mother paid for part of it as a gift. After stitching for 35 years, I have slowly acquired things over the years. All the time I was a young mother with kids at home I only had a q-snap, and one pair of embroidery scissors. Which is really all you need, right :)

    No need to add fabric under clamps, just place project in backwards, so backside is flush with clamps and clamps are clamped into backside of fabric, so easy to end threads since backside is flush. Only way I use a qsnap now

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  4 роки тому +2

      That is such a great idea! I know a lot of stitchers that stitch that way. I have tried it and don't enjoy it for some reason so I switched back. If there is extra fabric on the sides of the project I just fold it to the backside, under the clamp. But if there is no fabric selvedge to fold over and help keep the clamp tight, like when I am stitching close to the edge, I use strips of felt to hold the clamp tight. My newer clamps need a lot less felt strips than my older ones, lol.

      Thank You Carol! Yes, I can talk about that. I don't think I do anything special besides clipping my tails off after I have gone under a few stitches to end a thread. And tucking under threads every few stitches if I am going to travel a few inches across the back. And I try really hard not to travel across the back unless it will be hidden beneath other stitches. I don't travel more than one stitch across the back if it will be in a no stitching area. I am glad my videos have been helpful :)

    Thank you so so so much for showing us how you use all those things. My main concern is about the shoulders. I've seen you don't have any base to support them. Only one last ask, could you make a video where you are stitching then we could see how those ergonomic points work? One more, thank you. Miriam

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  5 років тому

      Hi Mirili! Yes, I can do that :) I do wonder about the stress I am putting on my rotator cuffs with all that repetitive motion. I have never been able to stitch in a chair with arms, my arms brush against the chair and it gives me a rash, and if I rest my elbows on the arms it tweaks my shoulders and gives me a headache. And makes bruises on my elbows and forearms. I maybe need arms that are just the right height? I saw a flosstuber who put a "boppie" nursing pillow around her waist to support her arms. That could be a solution, but it would still be something brushing against my arms. I will have to cogitate on this problem, lol.

    Ty Brenda for this video & all your other wonderful videos too. I do have a couple of questions about your lap stand? I have a couple sizes of scroll frames but the sides on mine are square instead of round. Would I be able to use this lap stand with my rods? The other question I have & sorry I can’t remember if I asked this or not before , but have you ever thought of putting the base that sits on your legs under your legs instead? If this makes sense what I’m trying to say? Cause I have a hoop that’s attached to a stand called the fanny hoop & I put that under my legs & it works great. The only thing I wish the hoop was removable instead of fixed. Have a great day. Love to watch your videos. Hugs

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  5 років тому

      Hi Denise! My scroll ride side piece is square/rectangular as well, not round. Do you mean the edges of your scroll rod side piece are sharp square edges instead of rounded off? I pulled out the scroll rods I bought at JoAnns many years ago, that have sharp square edges on the side piece and the clamp holds it great. If I am using stretcher bars (what the canvas piece was on when I showed the floor stand), those are much thinner pieces of wood, and square. The v-clamp still works great with those, I just have to put both adapters in, one on the top and one on the bottom to make two flat surfaces coming down on that stretcher bar. And it still works great, never falls out. I hope that helps. If I misunderstood your question, please let me know :)
      The arm on my lapstand is not tall enough to put the stand under my legs. The stitching ends up being so far away from my eyes I have to crouch over to see it and reach it. And that really hurts my upper back. I love having it on top of my lap, I am so used to it now. I have heard of those fanny hoops, they sound great!

    My stitching chair has arms. Would those arms interfere while using the gazelle floor stand ? I noticed your chair is armless. Also I have to use a floor magnifying lamp when stitching. Do you use a magnifier while you stitch?

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  5 років тому +1

      I know a lot of people who stitch in chairs with arms. I don't, because I don't like my arms brushing against the chair arms when I stitch. I think the floorstand would still work, depending on how wide your piece was. If the frame your piece is on, is wider than the space between the arms of your chair, then that might be a problem. And with a really large piece you might have to push the floor stand away from you a little to turn the piece to the back so it didn't hit the arms as it turned. I am not sure how the arm that comes up on the side would work with arms. You would have to have the arm of the stand on the outside of the chair arm I think, and then the left hand side of your work would be over the top of the chair arm. Maybe not so good if you have really wide arms. Although if you look at the Artisan Design website, there is a picture of his wife using one of the floorstands with a recliner and it works fine.

    Thank Brenda, very informative, what size qsnap frame would you suggest is most useful to start out with? I have never used one, but do use smaller embroidery hoops on my projects, I stitch variety of sizes, but nothing really big.

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Judy!! My favorite size is the 11 x 11 q-snap because I can stitch quite a bit without having to move the q-snap, but it is still small enough to manage nicely in my lap frame or in my hands, resting on my chest. Although, if it is a small piece and the fabric is not big enough to fit in an 11 x 11 q-snap then you would have to use a smaller one. My daughters both preferred 8 x 8 q-snaps when they first started out, more similar to a small embroidery hoop size. And most small projects had a piece of fabric that was at least 8 x 8. But now they both prefer 11 x 11. It partly depends on how big the fabric is of the projects you will mostly be working on as well.

      Hi Rhonda! Are they the actual q-snap brand? I noticed the ones they sell at Hobby Lobby are not as tight. When my q-snaps get older and the clips get stretched out, you can run the clips through the dishwasher on the heat dry setting, and that shrinks them up a bit. Or you can buy replacement clips.

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  4 роки тому

      Hi Skye! I meant to show that on the video I did yesterday, and completely forgot!!! I'm so sorry! It sounds like you may be trying to slide the clips off? That is the only thing I can think of that might tear the fabric. I don't slide the clips on or off, I just push the clips straight on, and they kind of "pop" on, and I take them off the same way just pull them straight off, and they pop off. Sometimes you kind of have to get your fingernails underneath the edge and just pull really hard when they are brand new and so tight. Maybe your q-snap has a rough spot or a piece of sharp plastic sticking up somewhere?

    WHAT do you think of the frames to they bend in the middle . Thinking about getting a set

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  3 роки тому

      Hello! Do you mean the lapframe where the side arm is in two pieces so you can bend and adjust it there as well? Such as the K's Creation stand? I used one like that for a few minutes at a stitching event. It seemed to be lovely and well made. Definitely a nice stand. The one I was using did not stand up as high as my Elan does, so if I put it on my lap, it was further away from my eyes. I prefer my stand to be on my lap, and to be closer to my eyes. But the person who was using it was using it on a table, and it was the perfect height for them.

    • @Handworkmaniac
      @Handworkmaniac  5 років тому +1

      Hi Elizabeth! I can do that :) In the meantime, I always do it with everything layed out on the floor, as it is a little bit fiddly. And I usually either purposely cut my fabric a little long on the top and bottom, or sew some scrap fabric to the top and bottom, so there is plenty of fabric to hook under the little wooden piece, and then roll around once to hold it in place.

    Thank you for this info! I am investigating stands so this was helpful...but I need a place to clip on a magnifying lamp...I just can’t seem to find the right combo! Do you ever clip one on? If so, where and what kind? Thank you!

      I'm glad it was helpful!! If I have to use a magnifying lamp, I use my Ott floor stand one. But it drives me crazy getting it in just the right place, and gives me a headache. I much prefer having my Ott floor lamp just above and over my shoulder shining directly on my piece. And using my awesome magnifying readers for magnification. If I have already taken out my contacts for the day, I wear the readers over the top of my glasses. Or I could use the "mag eyes magnification" product that works with glasses. I do have a small clip on "mighty bright" light that I use when I am away from home and I just elip it to the top of my q-snap frame. However, when you flip to the back, the light is on the wrong side, lol. Finding the right combination that works for you is tricky, keep trying until you find it :) Artisan Design does have their Ergo model floor stand that has several optional attachments. Maybe your clip on lamp/magnifier could clip to one of those?

      CraftyAddict buy a clip on magnifier...clip on the bar of the stand with a piece of felt under for protection of the work.

    Can you show us how you stitch with the Elan lap stand? Do you use both hands or one hand?

      Hi Donna!! I can do that :) In the meantime, I am a one-handed stitcher. So my left hand stays on the fabric to guide my needle a little bit. And my right hand constantly moves back and forth from the top of the fabric to the bottom of the fabric, around the right-hand side of the frame. A little trickier with the really wide scroll rods!

    What size Q-snap do you use?

      Hi Shauna! I usually use 11 x 11 q-snaps. But occasionally I use an 8 x 8 if the design and fabric are too small to fit on an 11 x 11. And I use a 14 x 14 with extenders to make if 17 x 17 when I am beading a large project.

    You can put the bottom under your legs and it would be more stable instead of balancing on top of your legs.

      Hi Rita! I have tried that, but the arm is not long enough to do that. It makes the stitching too far away from my eyes, which makes me crouch, which hurts my upper back. I love having it on my lap, and I am totally used to it now. I know there are stands out there made to go under your legs that people love. Have a lovely stitchy day!
