- Following the release of JMT's "Who Did You Think I Was" video on iTunes, a studio recording of "Come When I Call" was also available for a limited time. And I was finally able to track it down.
Not many rhythm sections can make a song move like this.
Damn! Steve Jordan's drumming on this version is so good. The sound of the snare is perfect - not too loud, just perfect for the way the tune grooves along in perfect time, never wavering. Solid, solid drumming. Pino's bass, as always, is right in the pocket the entire time. John's guitar over top of the rhythm section combined with his jazz/blues inflection in his vocal makes me love this and appreciate how great these guys are. I love the live version on "Where the Light Is" but this studio version puts you right in the room. Excellent musicianship throughout.
The fact he actually wrote this song is mind blowing... THIS ISNT A COVER OF A STANDARD!!! HE WROTE THIS SONG!!!
They actually wrote all of the music and lyrics and recorded it in one single day.

@@aaaa-ym9gf Well musically there's not much to write. Its 'just' a I-IV-V and the lead guitar is most likely all improv. Sounds amazing though and still impressive to build this in just a day!

Mayer is a guitar legend, but only heared by musicians. The world thinks Mayer is a pop songwriter. I mean, he actually is, but he is breaking the industry every time that he release a new song. In his 40's needs to reinvent his way to make music. Playing piano, synthetizers, drum machines and so. THAT is like a game, his real deal is in the blues but he show their deepest talent in specific places and specific public too. Nowadays is hard to see a real musicians like Mayer is.
I love the difference between this and the 'where the light is' performance. This version is a lot dirtier and has a lot more balls, but the live one is far more stately and refined. Love them both.
Mayer always gives this ol bluesman that stanky face after his runs.
This guy can play the guitar.
JM is a real muso and probably the guy of his generation for me.. But this is real music with real players - Pino is so on.. It takes a great bassman to be so important to a sound..
I love the trio songs, this one sounds just as great as a studio version as it does live. :)

whoops... I mean I HEARD of videos like that...
Cool version, but I dont' think his solo is as good as the Where the Light is one. The riffs at the end make up for it though.

Thoose drums are more dry than a Martini extra dry ... but Jordan is way too cool!! .. but in my opinion i would prefer just a little reverb at least... Especially on the snare - sounds a bit like a bootleg or something .. :-)

I used to be a HUUUUUGE Mayer fan. But all I think of are the Playboy comments when I see him now. Still a good tune though.
