I definitely see where you're coming from. That said I think part of the soul of this song can only manifest itself fully with the energy of a live audience pushing him to another level
Yeah! I get that but I still think how great it would be on studio. Like, when I hear "I'm gonna find another you" on the Continnum version, it brings to me a sense of intimacy with my pain, if you get that, I believe it would have the same impact on my soul, more than it has already. XO!
I think this version has more of the "blues" vibe which is the core of this Trio. But the original is also great in it's own way too, probably not as technical but never lacks any of the great melodies.
I noticed that Steve puts in a whole different kinda groove, very simple yet it really drives the song and Pino's bass playing is as "colorful" as ever. Much more unique than the original version.
@Gummy132 actually for AGT and for much of his first tour it was only a four-piece set including Mayer, but your point is still valid, the feat is amazing
you know what is awesome as well? the version of "who did you think i was?" john played at that same show! great solo, he jams after the song has ended and uses the wah-wah pedal
This is so great! Btw, does anyone know how he gets that tone at 4:37-5:45. I hear slides, hammer-ons, basically legato playing, but is there a pedal being used as well?
my grandson sounds just like him and plays him so perfectly. Mason Reid for the record. Come when I call is very bluesy that captured me first time I heard it.
It's different then the others, not necessarily better but it definitely sounds bluesy like the Trio. This why he is a great artist, he can change the feel of a song to different genres.
Don't get me wrong, i first fell in love with this song on the AGT version because that was the first time i heard it. But this version took it to a whole new level. It makes the AGT version seem more contrived, rehearsed. I like both, prefer this one.
@BluesMastery If you haven't already heard it, listen to the As/Is Volume 6 version. Mindblowingly good, but pretty long. Been trying to find it on UA-cam but with no success.
I think it is because it wouldn't be as good of a version as the one of Any given thursday, I have heard one version on as/is but it was nothing compared to the AGT version.
Well that would depend on "powerful", this is a more relaxed setting so naturally he would play the solo mellowed out.. but I fell in love with the AGT version
No way...sorry...nope. You can't separate the solos from the band's part. It all works together. Pino and Steve make it entirely better. By the way, the solo in this performance is far more powerful than AGT. It has it all...the life and the soul this song was written to have. This solo has a total stream of consciousness feel to it. He went where the music took him. Bam!
He's flipping the pickup selector from first to fifth position over and over, just going crazy with it up and down rapidly from top to bottom while doing those hammer-ons and sliding from note to note. When you toggle the pickup switch really fast it gives that chorusy sound. Keep an eye on the endings of about 80% of live vids, he's always using while the band rings out the last few notes live.
I'm not a massive fan of this at all but as a musician I appreciate that this song would be incredibly hard to pull off as part of a three-piece. You've got to remember that on AGT he had a massive band with him, so to pull off the dynamics of the song with just a drummer and a bassist behind you would be much harder especially without a rhythm guitarist to fill out the gap during the solos. This doesn't stop Pino and Steve from being two awesome musicians.
The one from AGT is by far better, but there's way more to work with there :) The building up to the solo is much more interresting too, the solo comes very spontaneously (that's a word i can't spell lol) here - none the less it's nice to know that the song can be played by three people and still sound golden! Makes me happy since i really want to play this at my school (been trying to learn that solo by ear for like a million years...)
He should have kicked his delay pedal on set to a very subtle, almost absent repeat. That would have helped this version feel and sound better I think.
I don't know how anyone could think this version is better than the AGT version! I'm a HUGE Mayer fan, but he messes up more in this song than on any other song I've ever heard him play! It's like he's drunk or something...
@jl61046 ...I was ready to disagree with you...until I listened to this version. I've got to say this is the worst version I've heard. His guitar seems to "ramble"...NOT in a good way as he usually does. Just an off day I'd say as 99% of his work is fantastic.
i love how 'covered in rain' is like the sequel to 'city love'
it really is the sequel to city love, albeit a more somber and sad one because this was also a song about living in post 9/11
2022 squad. Still hits the spot after many years
best guitarist, bassist, and drummer out today = best trio!
yes yes but don't forget about the aristocrats
Agree
Man, I once had a love named Lydia. Damn can I relate to this song.
Those licks starting around 4:18 are heavenly
It's based on "Naima" from John Coltrane
I wish he could release this song in a studio version.
XO!
I'd be more than happy with an As/Is remaster
No, I wouldn't want that
I agree. The sound quality would be better and sometimes the audience takes away from the music. Which is what I came for.
ahhhh mayne...one of my fav jm songs...redone by the trio...sickkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!
Me too- my favorite John Mayer song. Ever.
Pino is the king! :)
10 year old comment resurrection!!! Hey I know you! You're that guy who does the thing with the things!!!
2019
I like this Trio version better than the AGT version. Hail JM3!
so much more refined than in agt, but AGT version is so raw though both are great!
First time hearing this version, but certainly I'll come here every day from now on.
I can't figure out why the fuck this song isn't in any studio album, it's at least one of his best songs
the studio can't do something like this justice. It's a dish best served raw. You're supposed to feel the live atmosphere, it's a song of mourning.
He mightve thought it was to basic or something not up to his standard. In an ig live he said that this was the only 2 chord song hes ever written.
@@TruthTalk1221 Interesting. Glad he thought it was good enough to play live at least. Sometimes, for some songs, less is more.
thank you for share. god bless you.!
The universe thanks you for sharing this. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

UM HELLO!!?? 4:08 HEARTBREAKWARFARE SOLO!???
There are only 12 notes boss 😂
it's a quote from Naima
@Gummy132 actually for AGT and for much of his first tour it was only a four-piece set including Mayer, but your point is still valid, the feat is amazing
Nice laidback version, love it
Great solo 2..
you know what is awesome as well? the version of "who did you think i was?" john played at that same show! great solo, he jams after the song has ended and uses the wah-wah pedal
This is so great! Btw, does anyone know how he gets that tone at 4:37-5:45. I hear slides, hammer-ons, basically legato playing, but is there a pedal being used as well?
I think he’s just that fucking good he created that tone with his hands
my grandson sounds just like him and plays him so perfectly. Mason Reid for the record. Come when I call is very bluesy that captured me first time I heard it.
Finally, a version of this song that trumps the AGS version. So hot!
It's different then the others, not necessarily better but it definitely sounds bluesy like the Trio. This why he is a great artist, he can change the feel of a song to different genres.
fantastic !
sick version! =) awesome indeed..
Don't get me wrong, i first fell in love with this song on the AGT version because that was the first time i heard it. But this version took it to a whole new level. It makes the AGT version seem more contrived, rehearsed. I like both, prefer this one.
This doesn't have the fidelity of AGT, but it has such a cool kind of tone to it. So much more groove as well. I prefer this version. :).
Classic
Anyone know how to get the tone at 4:18
Tube screamer / klon and volume on guitar rolled down
Thats incredible
although not as intense as the AGS version, i think this one has more feeling and vibe to it. its slick in its own magical way! all hail JM!
@BluesMastery If you haven't already heard it, listen to the As/Is Volume 6 version. Mindblowingly good, but pretty long. Been trying to find it on UA-cam but with no success.
What a jewel of a find this is!
No, all of his songs are the best. :)
@TheTakemusic that is an amzing song
His tone here is on point. If he played those srv licks a little louder and harder this version would be smashing
I think it is because it wouldn't be as good of a version as the one of Any given thursday, I have heard one version on as/is but it was nothing compared to the AGT version.
Levy Charleston as/is covered in rain has so much more emotion compared to AGT In my opinion
808th like. nice. tube screamer life.
Seriously chafer how do you get all these rare tapes lol
@gavinthesavage LOL! i would respectfully say that that observation put so well officially makes you a legend!
Well that would depend on "powerful", this is a more relaxed setting so naturally he would play the solo mellowed out.. but I fell in love with the AGT version
@mbasketcballb What's the name of the show and where is it downloadable?
No way...sorry...nope. You can't separate the solos from the band's part. It all works together. Pino and Steve make it entirely better. John needs to play this song more. I know he's into soulful music and this was a while back but I think it's pretty soulful?
He's flipping the pickup selector from first to fifth position over and over, just going crazy with it up and down rapidly from top to bottom while doing those hammer-ons and sliding from note to note. When you toggle the pickup switch really fast it gives that chorusy sound. Keep an eye on the endings of about 80% of live vids, he's always using while the band rings out the last few notes live.
he is moving rapidly back and forth on the pickup selector switch
@blindchicken24 Pino? You mean Pino Paladino?
I'm not a massive fan of this at all but as a musician I appreciate that this song would be incredibly hard to pull off as part of a three-piece. You've got to remember that on AGT he had a massive band with him, so to pull off the dynamics of the song with just a drummer and a bassist behind you would be much harder especially without a rhythm guitarist to fill out the gap during the solos.
This doesn't stop Pino and Steve from being two awesome musicians.
@pumukellll
Contiuum album credits say that he uses Ernie Ball Super Slinky
The one from AGT is by far better, but there's way more to work with there :) The building up to the solo is much more interresting too, the solo comes very spontaneously (that's a word i can't spell lol) here - none the less it's nice to know that the song can be played by three people and still sound golden! @0Last0Down0 proly just playing with his pickups
Jordan and Paladino really add up to the song, but the AGS solo has more feeling to it...
It's his best song:)
NOT so sick as Any Given Thursday's version.
Vinicius Guedes That's by far his best, but it's always nice to hear the different versions, especially since this was played with JM3.
Exactly dude
It is time for switching my reason to sense.
He should have kicked his delay pedal on set to a very subtle, almost absent repeat. That would have helped this version feel and sound better I think.
@Mechavrore yes sir
is there anywhere where i can get the song without the crowd screaming in? pls help
It's on Any Given Thursday.
+xAWAMx haha i feel you how you feel.
@TheTakemusic wow, holy shit.
It sounds like some kind of chorus pedal with the modulation turned up a bit. Do a quick search for Chorus and Leslie. Hope this helps lol
it is only in the respect its about the end of the relationship which city love is about
This version sounds great, but his singing in AGT is so much better.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
thats bold as love Solo
@desirrous the guitar was not perfectly tuned there pity
OOps! I meant AGT! lol
he uses 10s :)
My ATF song.
Cause it's kind of a child of city love maybe?
proly just playing with his pickups .
lol nice
caught the beginning of cissy strut:D
what is the name of the song that comes after this one.
I’m 11 years late but I think he did California dreaming
I don't know how anyone could think this version is better than the AGT version! I'm a HUGE Mayer fan, but he messes up more in this song than on any other song I've ever heard him play! It's like he's drunk or something...
"cissy strut" by the meters
Actually, I am a musician and respectfully disagree. Like you said, it depends on personal preference.
I'm with you, girl! I like this trio better. 2019 😁
@desirrous * as/is
lol check out my account for the playlist of ~10 different version of this song named rain
2024
listen to hit AND hit a big fatty... even better
Any Given Thursday is wayyy better
@jl61046 ...I was ready to disagree with you...until I listened to this version. I've got to say this is the worst version I've heard. His guitar seems to "ramble"...NOT in a good way as he usually does. Just an off day I'd say as 99% of his work is fantastic.
@TheGladDaddy
so corny
