  • One of the most mesmerizing scenes in cinema history was due to this classic alternative 80s songs… In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel. The song only went to #26 on the charts but after being used in the John Cusack/ Cameron Crowe film Say Anything it became massive. This video tells why it should’ve been a #1 hit who it was written for and how it was chosen for this 1989 teen romance.

      That's an easy one, Adam.
It's gotta be the soundtrack to hot tub time machine.
Spandau ballet, inxs, cutting crew, public enemy, talking heads, motley crue, men without hats, rick Springfield.
All those incredible artists songs are featured in that movie. It's an awesome soundtrack.
Infact, I'm going to watch the film again this evening. 👍

The movie wasn't very good, but one of the best soundtracks I've heard was for "Great Expectations" in the late '90's. So many great songs: Sunshower by Chris Cornell, Siren by Tori Amos, Life in Mono by Mono, Lady Your Roof Brings Me Down by Scott Weiland, Wishful Thinking by Duncan Sheik, Today by Poe, Her Ornament by The Verve Pipe. They all got a fair amount of airplay on Alternative Radio. The album even included an old classic, Uncle John's Band by the Grateful Dead!

In 2012, Peter Gabriel celebrated the 25th anniversary of So by playing it live in concert, with the original recording musicians, and playing all the tracks. I had the privilege of seeing him perform at the Santa Barbara Bowl on that tour. At the very end, he was talking about the impact In Your Eyes had and he paid compliments to Cameron Crowe and John Cusack. He then brought both out on stage, with the boom box of course, for the song. Brought the house down. It was simply amazing.

Say Anything was a nothing movie in 1989 it made 21 million dollars. It was not a hit movie. Because of cable tv over the last 30 some odd years females have fallen in love with it. The boombox scene is lame. The movie is a terrible chick flick. Chick flicks all have a scene like this in them. At the end of the film the guy has to do something to impress the woman he has wronged. Typical chick flick garbage.

I remember when "SO" was released. The critics accused Gabriel of betraying his "Progressive rock" fans, and the tracks were either too long or too tame for 80's radio. It, of course, became a legendary album.
I wish he was releasing more new music these days.

I love Peter Gabriel's music, because as a psychologist, it is just full of psychological angst, exploration, turmoil, grief, and deep work. Maybe that's one reason his music resonates with others; the shared vulnerability and experience touches others and gives voice and expression to their own inner struggle. Thanks for this episode!

However, as the main format was still vinyl and based on how "In Your Eyes" needed to be cut into vinyl it had to be the first song on side two. Peter wanted it to be played loud and this the only way to do it on vinyl. When is was remastered digitally Peter moved it to the last track as originally planned. It makes more sense.

@@ProfessorofRock I have to admit the famous scene is my favorite. I've seen other discussions about the scene but to me Lloyd's body language and particularly his facial expressions have a whole ball of emotions... from as you mentioned standing up for himself, defiant, but also quite a bit of vulnerability in his eyes in particular... he's defiant but afraid that it won't be enough, that she will still reject him.... simultaneously defiant but vulnerable/afraid. I've wondered if that shot is bottled lightning... did all the stars align just right for that shot?

How many artists can you recall that apparently came on the scene in the 80s as solo artists were actually the front man of prior rock and progressive rock legends? Peter Gabriel was one of those artists for me. I had no clue he was the front man for Genesis until… Are you ready? 2019. I knew who he was, and I knew who Genesis was. But I had no clue.
Adam is 100% correct: Peter Gabriel, from Genesis throughout his solo career, was genius.

Long Walk Home - Music from The Rabbit-Proof Fence). I listen to all three of these ALL the time - while working, painting, studying, reading, whenever. But "Passion" really is the greatest film soundtrack ever created.

Accepting all I’ve done and said
I want to stand and stare again
    Till there’s nothing left out
Oh it remains there in your eyes
    Whatever comes and goes
I will hear your silent call
And I will touch this tender wall
Till I know I’m home again
...And then that INCREDIBLE voice of Paula Cole’s. I never knew such incredible songs could be expounded on and improved upon until I heard Peter’s _Secret World Live._ The man is incredible because he can put the entire soul and essence of humanity into a recording. But what I think makes him truly outstanding is how he highlights the special talents of every single member of his band when he plays live, providing an even richer experience than his carefully crafted studio recordings. Peter Gabriel’s music may be written by him and arranged by him, but he is an artist’s artist who makes the music not just about him, but instead about everyone around him. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone reinterpret his own music as many times as he has. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show with one man’s name on it become a show about everyone in the band and everywhere around the world. The man loves the art and will sacrifice his being the centerpiece of it to create better art.
There are no other Peter Gabriels.
Fantastic video! I will now have to dive down the rabbit hole of your prior videos, as this the first of yours I’ve seen. I can’t wait to see your full Peter Gabriel video...honestly...I don’t think a feature length film could document everything he’s done with music. He really is special.

Peter Gabriel's "Passion" soundtrack to "The Last Temptation of Christ". When I was a teen (late 80s) I spent a month in the south of France, and I sat all alone near a cliff's edge watching the sun set into the Mediterranean every single night with this tape in my Walkman. It was absolutely transcendent! Favourite tracks...the haunting "With This Love (Choir)" and "It Is Accomplished" with its sonorous church bells paired with pulsing drums.

When I was younger, I didn't understand the meaning of In Your Eyes. The musical arrangement is phenomenal. It had, and still does have, me thinking back to the suffering in parts of Africa a in the latter 80s. Working so hard for survival. Seeing the suffering in the eyes of malnourished children, yet that glimmer of hope in their eyes. One can feel complete when they feel the heat, see the light. I still have that thought today when I hear Peter Gabriel sing that song.

I once did this song at a karaoke bar with a boombox over my head, in-character as a guy who hadn't anticipated that actually SINGING it that way would make a person tired and uncomfortable even faster than just letting it play. I still remember how satisfying it was to milk those laughs, really leaning into the impatience and aggravation on "All my instincts.....*glancing upward as if to imply, "as in: the ones that would've told me that this is a bad idea"*.....THEEEY RETUUURN!!!".....before finally ad-libbing, "OPEN YOUR FUCKING WINDOW ALREADY!!!" There's only a few contenders for my favorite moment of doing something funny for a live audience, and that was certainly one of them!

Hey Professor, isn't it ironic that both "In Your Eyes" and "Old Time Rock And Roll" were top 40 hits before the movies that they were featured in, even came out? Isn't it also ironic that neither made the top 40 when the movies came out, but yet and still, those songs are remembered primarily because of the movies ("In Your Eyes" went to #26 in 1986, and #41 when it was featured in the movie. Similarly, "Old Time Rock And Roll" went to #28 when it first came out in 1979, butonly #48 when the movie came out in 1983). Go figure!

However, the Say Anything soundtrack was blaring the entire summer of 1989, the year I and some of my best friends graduated from high school. Beyond #In Your Eyes", which binds the entire sndtrk, we loved the RHCP song "Taste the Pain" with its extra bridgework (not found on any other release) and the interstitial film dialogue. It is a great collection.

I kinda rediscovered Peter Gabriel, because in the late ‘80s, I really wasn’t listening to his music. I was more into hip hop, R&B and dance music. So in 1999 I’d traveled to Senegal and The Gambia as a part of a college study abroad trip. I’d heard the artist Youssou Ndour come on the radio, and I literally stopped what I was doing and said “who is that”? Which well, it was kind of like asking someone here who Michael Jackson was. So when I came back to the US, I asked a friend of mine, who was very much into world music if she’s ever heard of Youssou Ndour. She of course said she had. She started naming all of these artists that had apparently worked with Ndour, and I just kind of laughed, because as I said, I really wasn’t into that kind of music at that time. So anyway, as I’ve gotten older, and also gotten more into the history of various forms of eyeglasses, Gambian and other types of West African music, let’s just say I’ve also gotten a bigger appreciation for other artists I’d not had an appreciation for when I was younger. Hope this makes sense.

I enjoyed this song on the original album release of So, but the Say Anything movie made me appreciate it much more. However, my absolute favorite version of this song is the extended live version which have been performed at his concerts ever since. There are a couple of great live versions on UA-cam, both with Youssouf D'nour, but one of them which I believe wad performed in 1992 featured backing vocals from Paula Cole, who would later have a huge debut album that won her a Grammy for Best New Artist.

In the movie Say Anything, this song is playing on the radio of Lloyd Dobbler's Chevy Malibu while he and Diane Court make sweet love for the first time. That is what makes it so poignant when he is playing it for her to hear on his boombox...over his head...when she had just told him that she wanted to take a break from their relationship. It's as much of an Alanis Morissette or Stevie Nicks moment as men are allowed. Im glad Prof mentioned that Peter Gabriel's lyrics for the song are meant to be as applicable to a woman you love as they are to God. Peter has a lot of great religious imagery and intention to much of his work. Many astute music fans will remember that he did the soundtrack for The Last Temptation of Christ, which has been my favorite instrumental album since the 90s.
