The tune is African influenced, and Gabriel has been a champion of world music for years now. Amazing!
spot on.
West African! They are singing in the main language of Senegal.
Pete,David Byrne and Brian Eno and Mick Fleetwood were all on that trip well before it finally blew up in popularity thanks to Paul Simon's Graceland album.
That's what I respect about peter Gabriel
The song is about Nelson Mandella.
The man in the red hat is Congolese musician Papa Wemba and his band comes up for the final dance.
The African guy in the red cap is the late Papa Wemba, a Congolese superstar of Soukus music. The drummer is Senegalese-born Manu Katché, who was one of the most in-demand drummers back then.
Wow, appreciate the info, that's so cool!
Manu Katché, is still in demand - one of the best drummers in music.
Manu is a total baddass!
Manu Katché is french actually. Born and raise.
@@julientardieux Merci, I stand corrected. I read somewhere that he is Senegalese; must be of Senegalese background, but born in France.
Peter Gabriel's music is a magical rabbit hole you MUST go down!
I’ve only seen this twice. This to me is one of the most incredible, magical,
inspiring soul feeling videos I have ever witnessed in my 60 yrs on earth.
Btw Peter Gabriel is a genius. This song is from the record “So” which is a
masterpiece in my opinion. Sorry if I sound hyperbolic but this video moves me
every time I watch it. Wow just wow
❤❤❤❤👍
This performance also moves me every time. It's a celebration of unity and reminds us that we're all connected - we're all African. Then I look at the world around us and despair....
Same here. Always moves me.
Not hyperbolic at all. He is an absolute genius and his songs are breathtaking.
I concur
Peter Gabriel was the lead singer for Genesis before Phil Collins (Phil was already the drummer for the group… they kept trying out singers to replace Peter until they decided Phil was who they needed). Peter is very eclectic and has some strange but wonderful music. Sledgehammer has a fun video. His duet with Kate Bush on “Don’t Give Up” is hauntingly beautiful.
Much much more than just the singer.
"Don't give up" is an amazing song. The video is excellent also
Considering this song is from his most commercially successful album, what never stops impressing me about PG is his continuous experimentation. He probably could have easily made another So style album after this, sold millions and laughed all the way to the bank, but that wouldn't be his style, so instead we have US, which is arguably his most personal album, and UP, which has some great songs but took well over a decade to come out.
Try the song with Robbie Robertson "Fallen Angel"
The Blood of Eden is the root of all humanity and the story of man and women and our forever unity and differences... also Love to be Loved... the root of all our souls, particularly through depression and uncertainty of relationship breakdowns.. Come talk to me... about his plea to his daughter to not be astranged.... his love, humanity and humble intelligence is amazing... he helps me through my grief and dark days
African!! These are African musicians! Fabulous version of this Gabriel classic.
You comment leads people to believe peter gabriel and his band is from africa, they are not. Youssou D'Nour is african.
Two are African I believe. Others are from other countries.
it's a guest musician from Africa. Peter Gabriel is British. In this particular live version they sang parts in an African language.
Pre COVID Gabriel used to host an event in the UK annually called WOMAD,(world of music and dance). Groups, singers and dancers from all over the world you would not normally get to see.
Got to go to one in my hometown. The artists that were there were headliners from around the world and Peter closed the festival with the band you see on the stage. There are no words to describe that day. 🌹
World music. Make no mistake, Peter Gabriel, an Englishman (and former leader of Genesis) is the singer, songwriter, and the architect behind everything you see here. A musical genius. A legend.
Great artist. The female singer is Paula Cole a fantastic singer who went solo herself with a few really good songs.
Love Paula Cole. She's amazing to watch playing the piano. She literally looks like she's wrangling those keys.
I love her song "Where have all the cowboys gone" ❤️
@@user-or1ye3iz6d my fave by her is Mississippi
I've always loved that drummer and the sound of his drums
Peter Gabriel was at the forefront of a style that emerged in the lte 80s called 'World Music' that incorporates musical rhythms and melodies from very diverse cultures. This video always nearly moves me to tears - there is so much joy (as well as talent) on this stage! Another unique artist in World Music was the Afro-Celt Sound System - love their stuff!
Produced by Peter Gabriel's label RealWorld.
Excellent group to discover... I am thinking of Colossus, Lagan, Eirann, Persistence of memories... the first 3 or 4 albums are absolutely incredible... as the name of the group indicates, it is a mix between Celtic, African and electronic music!!!
Very mindblowing !!
They are fantastic! Blew my mind in the 90’s!
Beautifully said!!💜💜💜🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
This performance, and many from this concert, bring tears of joy to my eyes (!). What an amazing atmosphere, pure joy on stage and in the crowd.
Afro-Celt produced a CD-R that you could both listen to on a CD player, or on a computer you could use their samples to make your own songs. I remember playing with that for days on end. No one at the time realized how that would eventually merge with old-fashioned DJing to create modern music performance and DJing.
I love the studio version of this song, but this version is hands down the very best version I've ever heard.
¿¿ MAGICAL ?????????????????????
Shaking the Tree from the same concert is also fire.
Peter Gabriel was the lead singer of Genesis until he went solo. He has had a fantastic solo career. This song,Sledgehammer and Shock the Monkey are all great songs of his.
I second Sedgehammer. Thats my jam
He kinda got kicked out, as I recall.
@@OG_Wakanobi Either way, he's done just fine.
@@OG_Wakanobi
Nah,it was mutual. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album was almost entirely Pete's conceptualization and after having a taste of that much control,he wasn't very interested in giving it back. And the other 4 lads weren't keen on essentially being Pete's back-up band if that was the way it was going to go. So he felt he had outgrown the constraints of being in a band and the band didn't do anything to dissuade him.
"Hi There!" BIG TIME is also a great song :-)
The female singer was Paula Cole, who scored her own solo hits in the 90's - "I don't want to wait" and "Where have all the cowboys gone?"
Both fantastic songs.
@@joshuawiedenbeck6944 I really like "Me".
I still like peter gabriel today i follow him since 83
Asia & BJ, his "Solsbury Hill" and "Games Without Frontiers" are next for you. In Your Eyes is his best song imo!
I would say all three you named are my favorites, along with Biko...even though it makes me cry.
ABSOLUTELY 💯
Wife here..Yyyyyaaasss absolutely...
Solsbury Hill live is fantastic...
Totally agree with these suggestions. Those are his 3 best, IMO. Absolutely love Solsbury Hill!
African music is a huge influence on Peter Gabriel. This entire album really
Asia is Right!!! Africa...African South African music...She is right!!!!
He has always involved different musical styles of the world into his music, this was not something that people did in the 1970's when he did his 1st solo album after leaving the band genesis. He is involved in UNICEF and did song about Steve Biko who was murdered in South Africa which is worth a listen. He performed it for Nelson Mandela after end of aparteid. I would suggest listening to red rain or solsbury hill next, great reaction
The joy of being as if we're children again ♥️
England, France, India, USA, Congo, Haïti, ... on stage
One of the best Live performances i've ever seen.
God, I adore Peter Gabriel. For more than 35 years he’s been my favorite artist. This entire concert is pure magic. Every song. Peter has been a champion of human rights throughout his career, and has always worked with different musicians from around the world. The rabbit hole is deep with this one.
I was a tween/teen in the 80s and was a huge Peter Gabriel fan. Of course, this is one of the best songs ever but this performance is unbelievable having the African chorus come in I mean just everything is nothing short of spectacular. I would fucking love to be in the audience during this concert. By the way, Peter Gabriel is not only an amazing lyricist, but he’s an amazing musician. His music is so special and he is also an amazing human being.
Peter Gabriel is one of the all-time great live performers. His concerts deploy spectacle in a brilliantly original way, and he has the musical genius to back up the spectacle. He would be great without it, but it only makes his performances more captivating.
near the end of the song they use an African language called Wolof. Gabriel's lyrics were inspired by an African tradition of ambiguity in song between romantic love and love of God.
Peter Gabriel. One of the greatest ever frontmen and singers.
Peter Gabriel has been a proponent of African rights & music for four decades. The man in the dashiki is Youssou N'Dour, a living legend in African music. Oh, and the lady in the sleeveless dress with the amazing voice was Sinead O'Connor. (RIP)
The woman singing is Paula Cole who had a popular run in the 90s as a solo artist. She sang Where Have All the Cowboys Gone and won a Grammy. Peter Gabriel sang a song with her on her debut album
Peter is a world musician.
Been waiting for this one. The entire Secret World concert movie is a must see. Peter Gabriel was very involved with apartheid in South africa. He uses sounds and instruments from many cultures. The man singing at the very end is Youssou N'Dour and he is singing in his native language of Wolof.
Youssou N'Dour (Senegal) is on album version !!
For this concert, it was Papa Wemba (Belgium Congo, now Democratic Republic of Congo)
@@franckgrandis2956 i seen Youssou N'Dour tour with him in 1987 and 1988 on the amnesty int'l human rights now.
He was involved in standing against apartheid. You make it sound like he supported it.
@@ugadawgs1990 I reread my comment and I can see how someone would think that. Yes, he was AGAINST apartheid. Thank you for pointing that out to me.
It's like you're not even doing a concert you just hanging out with everybody doing their thing. ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
Peter Gabriel runs Womad which is a world music festival, he has championed African music , I think they were singing Senegalese , you got it spot on both of you .
This is my favorite version of my all-time favorite song. This song means everything to me. I just saw Peter Gabriel in September 2023 (30 years after this was recorded), and he still performs with the same passion and energy even though he's definitely an old man now at age 73. His voice sounds almost exactly the same, which is amazing considering all the time that has passed. He was 43 here, which isn't exactly young.
Unfortunately, he didn't have Youssou N'Dour to sing the part in the West African Wolof language:
_Sa bet chi lamp, chi tangaay, sa bet maangi ci biir_
That translates roughly to "Your eyes, light in, heat in, your eyes, I am inside." It's essentially matching the English lyrics.
Peter is from the UK, but this concert was performed in Italy in November 1993.
Guitarist David Rhodes is from the UK as well. The drummer, Manu Katché, was born in France but has ancestry on the Ivory Coast. Keyboardist Jean-Claude Naimro was from France as well. Bassist Tony Levin and singer Paula Cole are American. Singer Papa Wemba and his band hailed from the Congo. On the original recording, Youssou N'Dour hailed from Senegal. L.Shankar on the double violin was from India.
Truly world music.
You must do the video with him and Kate Bush "Don't Give Up" - excellent! He has one of my favourite voices in rock.
Another great African vibe was when Paul Simon made an album with a South African group. Listen to "Homeless" or "DIamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes".
Pure Quality On Top Of Pure Quality With Added Pure Quality.
OOOOOOOOH YES!!!...what a treasure!! this is why we went to concerts in the 80s....even though this was in the early 2000's...PLEASE REACT TO SHAKING THE TREE from same Concert!! ..lighter in the air and much love to you , the kids and the doggie!❤
There is a definite African vibe. Peter Gabriel not only accepted other people but he actually learned and appreciated other cultures
One of the most vivid statements for the power of music to join and heal. The way they face each other, they dance in unison (and focus their steps on meeting the earth rather than leaving it like Western dance), the multiple languages, and the pure joy in their expressions and communion…I hope they see this in 500 years and know we understood the assignment even if we didn’t complete it most of the time.
The whole show is worth watching. Lucky I saw it in person.
Shaking The Tree is another great one from the same concert!
Peter has spent many years in Africa which is the vibe you're getting. He's all about human rights. You should listen to Biko. Another great tune
Lots of African influence here, that's what you're thinking Asia. Tribal drum rhythms and singing/chanting. Hints of blues/jazz in there too. Amazing musicianship. Peter Gabriel is one of a kind too. Him & Phil Collins both served as lead singers for the band Genisis.
Definitely an artist. Very serious about multicultural music.
Lots of comments telling you that Peter Gabriel "was the former lead singer of Genesis", then failing to note that Genesis in the Gabriel era was one of the greatest bands, ever, with multiple fabulous songs and albums. They helped create the musical genre known as "progressive rock", which was quite popular in the very late '60's and up throught the late '70's, which looks like before your time. It's never really ever came back into popularity since then, although lots of musically-inclined kids grew up to form their own bands to compose and play progressive rock that received zero radio play and went unloved and unnoticed except by diehard prog fans like myself. Together, these second-generation bands are known as "neo-progressive", in part because they tend to incorporate a bit of the music that had obtained some level of poplularity during their young lives into their progressive compositions. The fun part is that these neo-progressive bands are, for the most part, completely unknown to younger people despite the fact that a lot of them are still touring, playing theater-size venues all over the world, to the coterie of prog fans who still carry that torch. Marillion, Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, IQ, The Flower Kings, and many others have made tremendous music over the past several decades. You should check them out. Given the banality of what passes for music today, maybe prog is ready for a huge comeback.
YES!!! African influenced... Africa is the core of music.
We are the World.
Impossible to watch this without ending up with a smile on your face.
The core of the song is the same as the studio version, but this live interpretation performance is next level amazing. A reaction to the studio version would be good for you 2 to hear. It was used in a memorable scene from the 1989 movie "Say Anything..." Thank you for the reaction. Happy birthday, Paul!
My fav is - Solsbury Hill - its a must for you to hear. All hes done is worth the listen. If you get a chance that concert is great. Band is awesome.
This was our wedding song back in 1992! There's a lot of talent on that stage.
Always loved his work. African influence, for sure. Awesome!!
Peter Gabriel was a pioneering artist who brought 'World Music' to life. You were both right, his music had elements from many different cultural traditions. He was the artist who first stood against the Apartied in South Africa, he brought many artists together to raise awareness which ultimately brought an end to the Human Rights abuses. He wrote the soundtrack for the film 'The Last Temptation of Christ"
For that project he explored the music traditions of the middle east. This man is a genius.
I saw Peter in 1988. Even from the cheap seats there is no denying this songs' power. Wept like a new born Christian.
Peter founded WOMAD a movement to publicise world music, it's been one of his defining successes.
I was lucky enough to see WOMAD tour that year and Peter and this band closed the festival. I will NEVER forget!!!
Man has a set of lungs on him. To dance and doing all that jumping around and never loose his flow in the the beat and singing.. He used to be lead singer of Genesis then decided to go explore his own. Then Phil Collins took over as lead man with Genesis.
Definitely a lot of African influence in Peter Gabriel's later music, and he collaborated with many African musicians.
It's 100% multicultural Asia, Peter always makes space for diversity in his music and it's incredible
African also. The violinist is Indian. Most others African.
@@brianyoungberg9904 I was referring to Asia the lady whose reacting not Asia the continent lol🤣🤣
I LOVE Peter. He is so original and just downright talented. So glad you guys discovered him. Thanks Paul LOL
I saw this concert tour live! Beyond any doubt the most uplifting musical event I've ever experienced. The entire "Secret World Live" concert / album is amazing!!
You gotta go down the rabbit hole on Peter Gabriel there are Countless Great Tunes by him and his group
"Shaking the tree" from the same concert is another great song.
Going sto see him in bergen Norway 2023 What a party...
Seeing Peter Gabriel live was quite an experience.
He also has a video of this song in a concert for Nelson Madela's 70th birthday.
So glad you picked the live version. So emotional & beautiful.
It' s called World Music and it's from everywhere. You guys got it. Peter brought this to light starting in the early 90;s. when it come to Peter you are going down a magnificent rabbit hole. Enjoy.
Yes the end of the song is sung in an African language. Ironically this song is sung by a guy who has some of the most beautiful eyes I've seen
The singer with the red hat: Papa Wemba a very popular Congo singer and leader of the SAPE movement.
Jean Claude Naimro on piano: member of the most popular Caribbean band " Kassav" french west indies band.
The drummer is Manu Kaché , a senegal/ french drummer and internationally knowed.
Musicians from Africa or Caribbean .
Peter Gabriel was the first pop singer to do this , mix all influences, do " world music" in 80's before it's becomes " normal" nowadays.
This was during a period when several HUGE artists reached out to International artists to join with them and create music and tour. Gabriel has this African group, Paul Simon did African groups, Sting got some Middle Eastern artists to join him, etc. By doing this they also introduced us here in the Western world to new music styles and artists we would never have known. You need to check out more.
Peter Gabriel is one of the few that can pull off an international sound and not make it seem cheezy or forced. he is a master.
Love watching you two! Just a bit of interesting info…this song was written for Rosanna Arquette, the actress. And so was the song Rosanna by Toto. She must be something special. This song is best known from “the boombox scene” in the 80’s movie called Say Anything with John Cusack. A GenX classic and worth watching in your pajamas with a bowl of popcorn. Keep doing what you’re doing. Watching your reactions to my old songs makes me laugh and you call my attention to so many things in the songs that I hadn’t noticed. Love you both.
Come Talk to Me, Down to Earth, Shaking the Tree, Kiss That Frog...are MUST LISTEN TO songs. All African inspired...and his amazing collaborations with incredible voices and musicians.
He is a genius!
Asia - "I'm loving how I feel right now." Made me smile. Thank you for that!
I'm so glad!
This is so West Africa! I used to live in Mali, hypnotic rhythms, haunting melodies, birthplace of Reggae! Peace y'all
Love his music. One of the best in worldbeat music, world music.. Yall are correct. Describing their music perfectly. Music from all over the world. Africa, European, Caribbean, Native American, Latin, some Asian, etc.
Damn right!
"How music brings people together"... I was thinking the exact same thing 2 seconds before you said it. You're damn right, man.
It's African sound, you should listen to his song Biko. It's a tribute to Steve Biko South African human rights activist. Peter is an human rights activist himself, just a great activist.
The sound is African tribal influenced ❤️🔥🎤😎
Lion kingish
The African guy singing was the late, great Papa Wemba, who sang music until the moment he died, suffering a heart attack on stage. RIP. I saw Peter Gabriel on this tour, and many more. He was the gateway drug to my deep passion for world music. Dig in. There is so much to explore!
What a show to see live was one I will never forget fun times !
Universal, exactly. This is a kind of songs that lifts up your spirits and makes you want to become one with the whole universe. Actually, I wonder if there are similar songs, creating that same atmosphere, in the world music genre ? If anyone has suggestions, I'd be interested to discover.
How about this? ua-cam.com/video/LXmhuNVAFfw/v-deo.html (the last one is an absolute mayhem)
This is from Studio ghibli anniversary concert. The choir simply breathtaking: ua-cam.com/video/1KPqWlluUcI/v-deo.html
Last two entries from Yann Tiersen: ua-cam.com/video/TBOdQVR6r7o/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/hb1O4oPJ2TY/v-deo.html
I have always thought that Parachute Club "Rise Up" was such a song. Toronto at the time it was made was THE world's most multicultural city, with HALF of its 2M residents born in another country, and most of the million Canadians not born in the city. The song reflects the struggle to become a people by intention. And we did, for a time.
Manu Katché plays drums like a waterfall over rocks. Silky smooth but powerful and dynamic.
Peter Gabriel is so influential. The beauty he portrays is something else. He can bring everyone together, and he truly cares about everyone.
Wow, 7 months ago....I need to surf more. This is one of my favorite live concert performances...love every song in it..and my taste in music is very wide in range and in depth...keep loving the music and maybe, just maybe it will bring us all together....take care...
One of the coolest songs ever. There are a few videos that break down the beat, etc. Well worth the research
I saw Peter Gabriel twice when he brought his WOMAD tour around in the 1990s, and again at Woodstock 94. His shows were epic.
One of the best live performances ever!👍🏻❤️☮️
Here you go! Lots to hear from him!
Asia…. This is why live performance videos are so amazing. It’s not just about the lyrics or the guitar. It’s a performance. Words flashing on a screen can’t give you this feeling. It’s the interaction on stage and in the audience. That beyond the music there’s a connection between the artists and the fans. It’s magic🪄🪄🪄. By the way this performance was recorded live in Modena Italy. 1993.
Gabriel promoted WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) and champions music from all areas of the world. He bought Youssou N'Dour (featured here ) from Senegal to many Western peoples notice. Also, special mention here to one of my fav drummers, Manu Katche and the incomparable Tony Levin on bass
One of my favorite songs! With so much going on, it's easy to not get the lyrics, and they're beautiful. It does have an African influence: "It features Youssou N'Dour singing a part at the end of the song translated into his native Wolof. Gabriel's lyrics were inspired by an African tradition of ambiguity in song between romantic love and love of God."
They are singing in Wolof language, spoken in Gambia and Senegal.
I think I have heard the term "World Music" used for this type of music. Feel good, uplifting. Hope we see more Peter Gabriel down the line.
Peter Gabriel is a champion of human rights, international music, and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!! His songs have strong emotional vibes, including Biko, Solsbury Hill, Red Rain, Family Snapshot, Sledgehammer, Mercy Street, Games Without Frontiers, Shaking the Tree, Secret World, Come Talk to Me, Zaar, A Different Drum, Jigalong, Down to Earth, It Is Accomplished, Father Son, The Time of the Turning, San Jacinto, On The Air, The Rhythm of the Heat, Big Time, Steam, Don’t Give Up, Fourteen Black Paintings, Sky Blue, and When You’re Falling.
Peter Gabriel has said this song is about the growth of sunflowers 🌻 in a greenhouse in York England and how the flowers look like giant eyes staring deep into your soul.
When he got into the Hall of Fame for the 2nd time as a solo artist he said the secret is to surround yourself with excellence and it will follow
