  • Thanks to Arkham Reporter and Nero the Pict for getting me copes of this! Hail to my Kamerads!!
With this book, Varg makes his case on many things, freeing himself from entrenched systems and taking DIY to another level( Do It Yourself becomes Do it Your Way).

The reason youve heard Black Metal being used before the whole 90s scene was because in a Venom interview from the early 80s cronos (i think) said "We are black metal, death metal, power metal" before any of those genres were even a thought. You can find the interview online.
Varg liking Altars of Madness is great, and if you check out his early URUK HAI recordings its total DESTRUCTION worship, like lost riffs from Sentence of Death/Infernal Overkill era.

Yeah, he always mentions Destruction's early stuff as an influence.
I remember as a ten year old reading an article in Circus magazine 1983 or 84 about European bands, the columnist saying something cheeky about "these Black metal" bands...it might have been about Bathory but I remember the term being written down then. Also there was an interview with the Beherit dude were he refers to the music as Black metal and "Satanic Death metal"I think from 1990. Then you have all the southeast Asian and south American black metal bands from the 80s.
Ultimately to me its all Metal and we should enjoy!

@@inthesegoingsdown kinda like Chuck Schuldiner said, Its all Just Rock N Roll if you boil it down. A few friends of mine just went to Japan and saw Beherit play live, so jealous.

Why not - it was an important album for us back then - I would call it a Pillar of my generation.
Back then, the Norwegians appeared to sluggish a lot of things in order to build a separate and strict identity.
If they overdid it or not, is another long talk.

@@inthesegoingsdown The way I seeing it, was that in the mid-80's bands who had a satanic imagery were given a bad rep by the major heavy metal magazines who used to equit satanic image to bad musicanship.
So, when "Altars Of Madness" got released, it was a shocking proof that satanic music can be fast, but technical and complex too, and getting played with amazing skills and majesty.

My biggest take away from this was the few moments he spent about the technical creation of black metal, how to approach it. From what I read already by Filosofem he didn't regard what he made as black metal. I think it still counts but its clear to hear the completely different direction he was going.
Also surprising was his praise of (or at least acceptance of) Immortal. I recall him saying Abbath wasn't so bright. I think just a clash of characters there maybe. Abbath did some guitar tutorials on youtube if you're interested though he is pretty wasted in most of them.
His next book is almost out about his childhood. Will you get it? I think I'll skip that. I'd like to know of his prison time and post-prison (eg when the French police came after him) and he'll be writing everything sequentially.

    • @inthesegoingsdown

Varg's stories as a kid in Iraq was one of the best videos he did. I shall continue with the book series.

Yeah, talks positively about Immortal and Darkthrone and calls Emperor and Enslaved outsider copycats. Enslaved's Vikinglir Veldi does have that trance-like atmospheric repetition that was no-where before Burzum. So I can understand that he felt ripped off, but they were all basically children at the time. I'm glad Enslaved copied him because that album is amazing--only one I like.
