I've been practising my vibrato every day for the last four odd months and whilst I am seeing improvement, I don't expect this to be a quick undertaking. I'm in for the long haul and I WILL get this sucker eventually no matter how long it takes. I'm not taking quick steps like mindless shaking of the hand, my fingers bend at the appropriate knuckle and slowly, but surely, I WILL get this part of my violin technique conquered !!
Man... supporting the hand against the violin, as training wheels, that's genius, I've been practicing for the past few weeks my vibrato, but as to be expected is extremely uneven and hard to keep it as a wrist vibrato, but with this I really can see myself moving to the next step. Great Video, keep them coming !!!!
@@cke900 I can happily say this was the video that made my wrist vibrato work , haven’t been practicing as much lately my teacher moved to another country , haven’t been able to find a good substitute
Many students struggle with the transition from fast, shimmering vibrato to a rich, wide vibrato. The wrist vibrato helps perfect this technique and Ray Chen's methods are the ideal way to battle this struggle. Great video!
This is one of the only videos I've seen on UA-cam that get immediately to the point with clear instructions on how to play vibrato. Thank you so much!
How can you be an exceptionally skilled musician, charismatic, funny, handsome and at the same time relatable and good at explaining? Life is so unfair
Try to make just three big amplitudes of vibration in the left, while you're pulling your bow in just one direction first. You can train that in the air without violin, too. Take an easteregg of chochlate, make left the vibrato and in the right you make a move with your hand, like you have a bow in your hand and go in the same time in one direction. That should help. My pupils make an exersice before, either. They have to make a big slide up and down with the left hand and while 3 slides up and down, they have to pull/push the bow allways in one direction.
If it's too much pressure, I found that my shoulder rest was not suited for me. To avoid tension in my neck and shoulder/ back but still keep adequate hold of my violin I would hold more of the weight of my violin with my left hand, which required me to grip the neck, locking the two together. which meant the movement of my hand just took my whole violin with it. See if you can still play when the base joint of your index finger is no longer in contact with the neck of your violin.
Well done , 👍 . .As children, we were discouraged from attempting vibrato. Picked up violin again in my thirties and developed my vibrato exactly along the lines you've shown .
This Class on Vibrato is Probably The Best Lesson I Have Received! I've Been Learning for about 2 months, Eddie was My First Teacher, Then Joy, Next was Christian, followed by Nicola , Then Alison. Now Ray Chen. Everyone of Them are Talented Teachers and Musicians ! Thank You Mr. Chen!
Thank you Ray! Yours is the clearest and easiest way of getting this. I could do this for the first time in my life after watching several other instructions which didn’t quite show how it is really about.
As an adult who randomly decided to pick up violin and learn only from UA-cam, this was a timely video recommendation since I was previously completely failing at trying vibrato... awesome teaching skills.
I've been clenching my chin down harder to lock the violin in place, then pinching with only thumb and whatever finger is doing vibrato. It is helping. I've been at it for a few days and have poor vibrato, but I've achieved vibrato! Lock and pinch!
Of all videos on learning vibrato i love both yours and eddy's video because it's easier for me.. It's like bigger picture then slowly seeing and understanding the smaller pictures involved in making the bigger picture..so thank you
This was so helpful!! Especially the tip for starting out in 3rd position. I think I just did wrist vibrato for the first time in my life. Thanks so much Ray! 😊
I can’t do vibrato. I’m trying so hard and every one who’s explaining it to me, I just don’t get it. Plus my teacher won’t allow us to move on to intermediate unless we know how to do it🙄
jalynn jones I was exactly the same, believe me or not after 10 years I couldn't still do it properly I had some kind of horrible self invented robotic finger vibrato!but now it's alright and I love it!
Ahhh if you're that... Um... Confused about vibrato, you can just move on. Your teacher isn't your life coach! Vibrato is also used to mask bad tonation, so it isn't that awesome and advanced. And yes, try arm vibrato! -Watermelyn
"rotation of the tip on the finger' may get you a little further with vibrato, but there is a lot more he's not telling you if you want to get an amazing hand vibrato. It's not really rotation of the tip of the finger at all.
My daughter and I love watching your videos. We both play as well. We would love it if you showed us how you go about shaping your music and create better tone quality! Thank you
Hi Ray Chen, I just went to the violin shop you mentioned in New York!! Julie's colleague helped me glue the open seams on my instrument. That help me a lot for my coming audition! Thanks for recommendation~
Hi Rey Chen, I am Ralph the London Technician, I just want to thank you for sharing your technique and knowledge on violin, and I want to thank you for being that man, that teacher, it do really help me and after a year some time of watching you, I find myself playing the violin.
Never thought I’d be able to do vibrato in my life time. Thanks to your video I took my first attempt. It’s funny and wonky still, but at least I know I’m on the right track. 🙏🙏🙏

Wow, that tip on the 4th finger was really useful. I can vibrate good enought with the 1,2 and 3rd finger but I struggled with the 4th, so I tried your tip focusing on the other fingers and... voila, efortless vibrato and no more tensing up.
Watch the exact position and motion of every single knuckle (joint). And the thumb! Everything is important. And Ray doesn't give you long to study what he's doing! 🙂
My teacher teaches arm vibrato, but my arm tenses up too much for any good results, so I took to your video. Already, I have more fruitful vibrato with this method than I do with arm vibrato. Thanks!
RAY! I hope you can PLEASE RESPOND and share how to develop wrist vibrato faster and what simple songs are good to learn vibrato instead of monotonous exercises or scales. Hope to hear from you.
i was practicing vibrato with only moving the finger joint at the begining ....i dont prefer arm vibrato especially on lower positions btw Ray im happy u r doing these videos cause i trust u more than anyone and i ll use ur tips to my future students
I tried for a few weeks when I first began playing and gave up trying to vibrato, figuring it shouldn't be that hard. I was right, it shouldn't have. I wasn't using a shoulder rest and I had horrible posture. Once that's fixed, vibrato will be the easiest violin technique you'll ever learn.
