These are all the best shots i took of the Del Mar race train that runs only during the summer time, and typically on trains #774, #591 & #595. ENJOY !!!
Train #1 - Sunday July 21st, 2013 (Sand Canyon Ave) - F59PHI #456 leading, & F59PHI #462 following.
Train #2 - Friday July 26th, 2013 (Laguna Niguel) - P42DC #74 leading with one of the best P42 K5LA's i've ever heard !!! F59PHI #456 on the back.
Train #3 - Saturday July 27th, 2013 (Laguna Niguel) - F59PHI #456 leading again, and F59PHI #457 on the back.
Train #4 - Sunday August 4th, 2013 (San Juan Capistrano) - Dash 8 #507 leading with a massive horn sequence, and very nice sounding K5LA !!!
Train #5 - Same train "chased" to Laguna Niguel.
Train #6 - Friday August 9th, 2013 (Mission Viejo) F59PHI #450 leading, and F59PHI #456 on the back.
Train #7 - Friday August 16th, 2013 (San Juan Capistrano) P42DC #188 leading, and F59PHI #454 on the back.
Train #8 - Sunday August 18th, 2013 (Palm st. in Downtown San Diego, CA) F59PHI #454 leading, and F59PHI #457 following.
Train #9 - Friday August 23rd, 2013 (Carlsbad Village) F59PHI #461 leading, and F59PHI #452 following.
Train #10 - Sunday August 25th, 2013 (Cannon road in Carlsbad, CA) F59PHI #452 leading, and recently overhauled. Nice horn action too !!! F59PHI #456 following.
Train #11 - Same train "Chased" to Laguna Niguel.
Train #12 - Friday August 31st, 2013 (Sand Canyon Ave. in Irvine, CA) F59PHI #464 leading, and F59PHI #452 following.

At 13:28, you can see P42DC #47, the locomotive involved in the 1997 Southwest Chief derailment and the 2018 Cayce train collision.

I just returned from a trip from NY to San Antonio, Tx. I will Never take the train, Amtrak, ever again! First problem was no checked baggage from the station my wife and I boarded so our so-called first-class sleeping compartment was full and I am disabled and had brought my wheeled walker. Walker did not fit in room so the conductor put it in the entryway. I had three tags on the walker but another conductor took it off the train in Toledo, Oh thinking it belonged to another passenger. Upon arrival in Chicago I have no walker. Train from Chicago delayed by freight traffic got into San Antonio 2 hours late. Compartments are very small, air conditioning runs constantly so we froze. Ride is very rough swaying side to side and end to end. Numerous passengers got sick. Meals, included in first class are very poor. Restaurant car ran-out of numerous items enroute and the refrigeration unit failed on the return trip. No eggs, cheese, meat, or deserts.. Amtrak offered to put my walker on the next train however we were staying 5 hours from San Antonio. Walker was returned on my way back home but was without it my entire trip. Per Amtrak website water, ice, juice, and coffee for first class passengers. No ice, rarely was water available, juice was warm, and coffee is made at 6 AM and still cooking when shut-off at 10 PM. No daily newspaper as listed on website. Cars are old and need repaired. Wi-Fi needed onboard Amtrak says available at some stations but didn't get a signal except in the Amtrak lounge in Chicago.
Please remember. Amtrak funding gets cut almost every year. Also, Amtrak has to use tracks owned and maintained by freight lines. They do pretty well with what they are given. That said, however, each car has it's own attendant and some are better than others. Most are pretty great.

P42's have PTC. Same with F59PHI's.

Because the way they build the extended length trains dictates this setup. They take the normal 6 car train (loco+5 trailers+1 cab) and smack on an additional 3 trailers and one locomotive. So you have a train that is built like this: Loco+5 trailers+Cab Car+3 Trailers+Loco. This setup is easier to put together and take apart in the yard, as opposed to shunting the cab car off the set, squeezing in 3 trailers, shunting the cab car back onto the set, and tacking on the engine to the other end.

The Pacific Surfliners consist of the locomotive & 6 passenger cars 1 of which is a cab car needs to be expanded to 10 cars as ridership on the Pacific Surfliners are now packed full on many of its runs. I ride them when I'm in the Civilized San Diego area when I'm home there. I ride them to & from Los Angeles & Oxnard alternating my visits there between the 2 cities. I enjoy train travel very much & don't ever want to drive long distance or. On what is becoming the I-5 parking lot between the Mexican border & 6 Flags Magic Mountain in Newhall and between Olympia & Everett,WA.

They are being used as there are some of the Pacific Surfliner cars being overhauled in Beech Grove, Indiana. That is why there are Amtrak Superliner cars on the Pacific Surfliner runs. I like the Pacific a Surfliner coaches better than the Superliner coaches because of the easier climb to the upper level and the thicker seats on the Pacific Surfliner cars.

manuels89 it's a longer the normal train so one engine is providing electricity to the cars and stuff and one is doing the pulling of the train

Delayed by mechanical failure would not be a good situation for passengers going to and from work. Delayed Cargo would cost more than having another Engine in emergency to take up the job is smart. Word of mouth is the best advertising ...but problems can impact a company with negative comments, which is a form of bad advertising.

I find it odd for a surfliner to be tugging around a superliner diner. I can see the normal consist, business-cafe-coach-coach-cab, but the extras I haven't seen before, coach-diner-coach.

+Maisia Kenyatta, I share your love for trains and especially the steam power of earlier times. I am facinated by them and I travel by rail whenever I can. In our country steam power has disappeared except in a one luxury line meant for tourists who can afford the very high fare. Here's cheers to all train buffs...
