- After taking a short break from the podcast, I return with an exciting discussion of Captain Janeway to celebrate the release of Star Trek: Prodigy! In this episode I chat about the version of female empowerment that Captain Janeway represents in Star Trek: Voyager. I explain how she is the ideal second wave feminist by looking at early liberal feminism, cultural feminism, radical feminism, and a bit of gender theory. I also mention a few interesting Voyager episodes for Janeway's character progression, and I reveal what Kate Mulgrew told me about Janeway and Seven of Nine's relationship in a Zoom meeting. Enjoy the episode 🖖🏻

As a male that has had intensive psychological treatment I can say for myself that my issues with females came down to this: My need for power and control, my lack of empathy, my self entitlement, objectification, sexual preoccupation and faulty thinking. I was a very distorted person.
Welcome back! 👋 This cast was extremely informative. I watched Voyager in the 90's with my brother and we would get high just before it came on. I must say the opening theme would hypnotize me and I really thought I was "with" them everytime I watched. Capt Janeway always felt "Motherly" to me. They were family lol.
Lol VOY are my family too :)
My favourite captain! I feel the same way about her.
Depressing that I discovered this podcast, two years after it was over.
The most important thing with Janeway is that she really got too into her crew. Let's do some takeaways.
Picard- Aloof, master diplomat, hates children, very concerned about maintaining not just the Prime Directive, but the moral high ground the Federation had seemingly established as benevolent, and a assembly of true "outreach by actions" from many worlds.
Sisko- damaged, but spiritually inclined despite resenting his loss. He was a very tough, and Stern leader, especially in war, but he often had episodes showing more humanity than Picard. His awareness of race relations, of how the Federation can be hard, and too strict, and embracing the Prophets and his role as Emissary. He had an amazing arc.
Janeway- Went from a very by the numbers captain to literally a mamma bear. Her choices weren't based on just doctrine but as the leader, and one who has to take care of her family. To a point of not listening to any ideals that will break her home apart. What she becomes is literally a single mother of a huge disparate family. Good son-Tuvok, angry daughter-B'Lanna, troubled son- Tom Paris, needy son- Harry Kim, rebellious adopted step daughter- Seven, best daughter- Kes, annoying uncle- The Doctor, understanding ex husband- Chakotay.
Very interesting!
