This is a very sturdy and well built mower. I thought I wouldn't like the foot operated speed control but after one use ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTZSPVwJFBv2hORqhQamtxi-tAe5K2EtC , I can't believe I ever had one without it. It drives like a car with an automatic transmission. Easy to adjust mowing speed according to grass depth/thickness. I have yet to get used to the long throw of the blade engagement lever but kind of get why it is that way. It allows you to hold mowing for short moments if you need. The engine seems very substantial and the frame has very little flex, both adding up to an impressive package. All my previous tractors were 18 to21 hp with 42in decks. This one is 23/46. I mow about 1.5 acres about every 5 days here in Alaska and that mowing time has been reduced by about 20%, partly due to the very tight turning radius. No loop arounds lol. Hour meter, cruise control, reverse mowing capability, deck cleanout and easy assembly all add up to a very well thought out tractor.
This video is still helping people out five years later. Thanks man, this was the exact problem with my brakes.
Happy it helped!
Woopedoeee I’ve struggled for over 2 years with my tractor , I almost put it on the side of the street with a sign “ Free “ , I am checking the brakes tomorrow. Thank you master !!.
Thanks for the upload, the guys at my local small engine shop said it would take a few hours to do this repair. Thanks to your video I had it done in 30 minutes. I sent them your video, maybe they can learn something
he only showed half a repair job on this brake, you also have to remove the brake disc if it is not sliding on the shaft correctly, the other brake shoe is behind it and will often be wore out first
@@jeffrobison2013 Nonetheless, it's still not a few hours repair.
Probably because they charge so much per hr. Like maybe $100 per hr, that's I've been charged before
👍👍👍 You just helped me on my MTD Ranch King 4 wheel steer, ( that’s been setting for 5 plus years) so I can move it up to my garage, to pull the trans axel out because it won’t go into reverse. Decided to get it going so I don’t have to keep taking my mower over to my Mother in law. Thanks A Lot!
I was baffled why my new (to me) mower was stuck. Had been sitting for a long time previously, I thought the rear end was broken. Turns out it was the brake, exactly as you described in your video. Thank you so much!!!
Don’t feel bad, I had one brought to me to overhaul, just brake stuck 😊😊😊
I learn something every day with help from guys like you. Thank you.
Good video man. No lame music just chickens and its straight to the repair lol
Thank you. I give MTD an F for leaving this information out of the Op Manual.
A real “show stopper “. Nicely explained.
Thank you!!!! We followed the directions and it worked perfectly. Mower is moving!! You saved us time, trouble and money.
AWESOME! My mower is not moving so I am going to check this out. Thank you so much!
I have been trying my best to figure this out and today I stumbled on your video. Now tomorrow morning I will be working on the brakes. Just wished it was closer to the shop, LOL.
Sometimes you can pry it loose with a screwdriver, a temporary fix
Thanks man, I just got one of them turf power mtd engines, and this happened to me. It took me for ever to find this video
Yes it did! Same exact problem with my mower. Could hardly move it in and out of garage when not started. I will fix that next spring.
Much thanks - the brakes were one of two problems, the other was the idler belt. Now will be adding another item to my cleaning checklist! BTW - A socket wrench makes that much, much easier! :)
Nice job! I've never worked on brakes on a mower. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the information, it was very useful and solved my problem. Only took 30 min or so with most of it being spent on cleaning the rust/dirt.
Wow very informative I have a MTD it's slightly different than that one but like you say they all are the same the problem I'm having is by stepping on it to release the brake the wheel doesn't roll at all I also have the problem of a not starting I will look at your other video on problems when it won't start because I think I have that same problem
Found brake mechanism based on your video(don't have a floor jack) spent several minutes pushing packed in grass/debris out with fingers, pen, screwdriver; sprayed the___ out of it with WD40, now tractor pushes easy w/o removing mechanism(thankfully I'm no mechanic); THANKS
Glad it helped
I picked up a really nice 12hp Ariens riding mower for $30 last December, turned out the parking brake had locked up. I use it to mow the flying field I use for RC Planes. As you said, they can lock up and people think its the transmission.
By far the best the video I’ve seen regarding this problem! Well done sir!
Thanks!
Thanks for posting this informative & entertaining video. Time now for a cold beer !
Not what I was looking for but loved the chickens, thumbs up!
Glad you enjoyed
Great video Jeff, you did an good job with it. Left with no questions.
thank you
I'm working on my friends Yard Machine Mower just like this one. Same problem. thanks for the help.
J
This is a great Vidd, its exactly what I need to do to get my mower unstuck! 👍👍😃
Cool video I use a dowel wrapped in sand paper to clean to plunger ports
Just came across your channel. thanks for sharing all this great information.
It’s very very common in spring time after setting all winter
Every one should check it
I learned something today, thanks.
I guess the same setup is found on a John Deere. I have an older model, 135, bought back in 2006. No issue with the brakes though. Very interesting vid, thanks! 👍👍
Had problem, watched your video and fixed in no time. Thanks 🙏for the tip.
I picked up an Ariens Rear engine riding lawn mower for $30 . The owner thought the transmission was broken as the rear wheels wouldn't even move. We had to pick up the rear end to get it on the trailer. After I got it home, I used PB Blaster on the brake and after a day of sitting I was able to hand push the mower around the yard. I put fresh fuel in it and it fired right up. I was able to drive it around and even run the mower. I did end up replacing both belts as they were dry rotted. I had to replace both front tires as those were dry rotted as well. There was NO RUST in the mower deck or lawn mower frame. The only rust was the brake disk that I removed and cleaned it up. It's an 8hp single blade mower. I cleaned up the deck and repainted it antique white and repainted the black on the engine and frame just to brighten it up. I also repainted the Ariens orange paint and clear coated everything. It's a 1979 rider but looks and runs like new. I give my grandkids rides on it around our neighbor hood, they love that! I cannot get myself to sell it now. The seat is like new. I swear this mower was hardly used even after all those years. Besides the slightly faded paint and belts, its a great mower. The blade ends were brand new when I got it too!
nice!
Excellent, simple and straight forward☀️thank you
Thanks for helping me again with a lawn mower issue!!
Glad to help
This video helped me a lot. My repair was successful and quite smooth, believe it or not!
righton, nice work
This was very helpful. Fixed my problem. Thanks.
How to make the pads last longer. A hose clamp is the right width. Just needs to be cut to length. You can use them as shims to push the pads closer to the Brake Rotor. Just sand the pads smooth where the rotor cut its grove. Place your shims behind the pads. Lot cheaper than $16+ for 2 new pads
Great demonstration, thank you. I hope this is all that is wrong with my Troy-bilt's wheels that won't turn at all. I do not want to have to work on the transmission. Thanks again Jeff.
My birds responded to you activating the brake lever
Hey thanks, that just helped me out.
LIKES THE DOG--CHECKIN YOU OUT..
Thank you. That was helpful.
Great post. Sure takes the mystery out of it. Now I guess I have to put my beer down.
lol!
Good video. Good information. Thanks
love the bamboo fencing...would love to know about how you set that up and I thank you
Thanks for video helped me fix my new used mower!
Having this issue right now..thanks for the vid!🙂
Looks like the Peerless I am currently using on my Rat Rod Tractor. I think that later on this year I will swap it out for a 5 speed.
Very helpful. Thank you!
That’s exactly what my problem was! Thanks!
You're welcome!
Good to know information. I did not know the disc brake was on the differential. Before I took it out, I smacked it a couple of times with a small hammer and problem solved. At least I know what to do and where to do it if it happens again. Guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.
Right on
Love your crew
excellent jeff..A great help for me and many others.. JDS Mobile mower repair
Thanks friend!
Great!! Video Jeff a little engine thx for you explanation
It's more trouble than they are worth to have to get my riding mower into a repair shop. Only 3 years old and won't start. A John Deere D140. We have 2.5 acres to mow but I'm going back to my walk behind because its so much work to move the riding mower and winch it into the utility trailer. If the riding mowers were more reliable it would be different but one hernia is enough.
Years ago I took the time to learn how to do maintenance on my rider. If you take your time you'll find it's not very difficult and you don't need special tools (maybe an odd shaped funnel for oil changes). I can disconnect my deck, change belts, blades and springs as needed; make adjustments to the brake, shift lever and deck level in about an hour. We're talking about an hour of work per season (maybe two hours for your larger mowing area). Believe me, it's not that bad.
Question, I have a troy bilt bronco 42". The brake/clutch pedal goes all the way down. I cant get it to go in reverse while pedal is depressed. Once motor is off, it goes in fine. Suggestion?
Excellent work as always....
So you do head count everyday?
Great presentation. Thanks for your help. Stay safe.
Thanks, you too!
That's great thank you gonna try this tomorrow n see if it fixes my issue thanks millions 😁
Ngl mechanic got pretty loyal dogs they probably think were unpredictable and amazing
Thanks, Just tried what you showed and it work,
Nice!
I saved the pads from cars when I changed them and cut them to fit the mower when they wore out
Thank you for you vid. I've watched your other vids. Good stuff.
I appreciate that!
It worked!! Thank you
Thank you so much..
Thank you for the quick video, very helpful!
I have a 1995 Ranch King by MTD, and I am looking for information on the transmission, was curious if yours would be similar?
If you drop a bolt in the hole it will help keep it from slipping off jack
That was it. Thank you!
Put your index finger on the bolt and the wrench will not slip off all the time
Thanks, AWESOME VIDEO, great explanation walk through, take care blessings. 😉👍
Thank you
Great! Thank you
Generally cleaning your machine will help prevent most issues. To anyone thinking that washing your machine causes rust, does it cause your vehicle to rust or help prevent it? Store your machine with the deck raised and not beside a building or in tall grass or mud. Wash and dry, then store in a dry place if possible
good tips
thanks you ♥
Thanks for the vid. My brakes work fine while in use, but the parking brake won't engage. I have a TB30R 30" rider. I really don't want to call a repair guy because I KNOW they will charge me a lot more. Unfortunately, I can't find a video for my particular rider to repair it.
Where does the speed shifter linkage hook to the transmission to shift? I have one that is stuck In first gear.
Thanks Jeff
Thank you for watching
Thanks for the great video
Thanks for watching!
I have a toro wheelhorse 11-32. It is difficult to get into neutral .. any ideas?
Good one ! Thx ! :-)
Thank you sir😊
I put them in my tumbler and it’s clean with the pins
Just today the old wards elite started the same symptoms when I tried to push it backwards. I wanted to ask how to properly adjust the deck. I recently packed and painted the deck + spindles. It cuts great but can't get it to lower all the way down. Below the third notch there's no more movmnt. Please help.
Excellent troubleshooting. 7/28/2023yr
Thanks friend!
Jeff - I've got a Craftsman riding lawn mower model 917276641. Last year, I heard a big clunk while mowing and a noticeable loss of power (speed) in the mower. I changed the drive belt. When I engaged the push moving option, it is still difficult to push in neutral with the brake off. It moves forward and in reverse and has about the same speed but you hear a grinding noise as mowing like it is stuck in one gear or not engaging all the way. Is there a way to change the transmission fluid? Any ideas what it might be other than a trashed transmission?
that sounds bad...I would suggest taking a close look at all of the belt pulleys and everything underneath to hopefully see the issue.
some carb cleaner would clean that dirt and grass off. Question. did you see if it rolled with the brakes removed to know if that was the problem? Excellent video! I need all the help I can get!!
I didn't because I knew it was the brakes it's a common problem
@@JeffsLittleEngineService Well thank you, I enjoyed the video...and your little helpers!
@Jeff's Liitle Engine Service- Craftsman LT-1000. Hydrostat trans. Brought it used last week. Can't fig out few things. Runs and mows fine I guess. In Neutral the mower still wants to move as if it is geared moven.? brakes- The right rod out dash does nothing. It just moves when cluch brake pedal is pressed on left side. As for the brakes, I get no brake at all. Pad between disk does look wore. All parts are attached, but press brake clutch pedal and nothing. Pads or nothing move?
Nice
How do I get the deck support off in a older troy bilt mower so I can get the deck belt off
Thank you 🙏🏻
You’re welcome 😊
Mine won't go in netrual it hasn't been ran in about 5years but if I jack up the rear end and spent the tiresome spins one way and ones spins the other way so I don't think the break is locked you think if I get it started and run it it will free up and go into netrual
Build you a work table and get out of the grass. You're killing me. lol
I have work tables everywhere and they are all full of projects. I usually just fix mowers where I find 'em
Couldn't move the mower as the brakes were seized. Did you watch and listen to the video?
Good fix but you forgot to check if the rotor was free enough to release
Thanks, I need some help with these things an assistant would be nice
How to remove the mowing bucket
I was just wondering, I was looking to start tuning up mowers next spring for some extra money. I was just wanted to know where you guys find out all these details such as flywheel torque (just an example, not looking to do that for a tune up), spark plug gap, all these little measurements. I'm sure you have them memorized but you had to learn somewhere. I am having trouble finding reliable service manuals. I want to do the most comprehensive and accurate tuneup possible and so many mowers are different so I was just looking for some insight. Thanks!
most info is available online or on UA-cam! I also own all Briggs and Stratton Service Manuals.
you can download Briggs and Stratton service manuals online for free, that's what I use.
Does this solve the issue where one has to "rock" the mower back and forth so it'll move?
yes most likely
Clean 'em up, lube 'em up, RAWHIDE!
What's the feeler gauge size between the brake disc and brake pad when the brakes are not engaged?
I can get brakes to stop tractor easily. But if they are not adjusted on the money, the brakes stop the tractor, but when put in park and in neutral the brakes won't hold the tractor.
not sure. usually 1/2 a turn in (clockwise) makes a difference, adjust 1/2 turn in at a time
My more like that won't move in neutral but I can drive it to cut grass Can you tell me why.
