What excited me about the 3rd Legion was Saul Tarvitz and the other loyalists from traitor legions, it made me want to build an Istvaan III themed Emperor's Children force. That, and painting purple is a lot of fun!
Mate the scheme looks so good on the table, really striking from near and far! I love the tarvitz bits aswell, how he contrasts the pride of the rest of the legion
Phoenix Terminators Tip of the Day: Take them as a retinue for a Warlord with the Paragon of Excellence Warlord Trait and focus on bullying targets they're better against (e.g. troops and dreadnoughts). Don't worry about getting charged later... Opponent declares a charge and you use the "Hold the Line" reaction... Your spears have Reach so you're likely striking first anyway but Paragon of Excellence will trigger +1WS. With Sonic Shriekers your opponent is probably hitting you on 6s. If for some reason your opponent is hitting you on 5s (e.g. they're immune to fear) you can use "Perfect Guard" to make them hit you on 6s anyway and with "Living Icons" there's a good chance you can win combat by parrying. If your Warlord is in a challenge, he can still choose a different Skill Unmatched option.
@@BearfootMiniatures It's a case-by-case basis for dreads. I do think they're better at bullying 3+ bodies, but with Phoenix Spears (+2S, murderous strike and fishing for 6s anyway) they can kill dreads before they swing back. You can also tank hits with Perfect Guard on the retinue whilst your Warlord aggressively goes to town.
The palatine blades can use jump packs via the legacy unit. But yeah two editions of phoenix terms being junk is quite sad. Such gorgeous models as well
@@BearfootMiniatures Another thing worth mentioning is using Maru Scara and simply not putting anything into reserve lol. +1 movement all game for a close combat legion quite nice. With the Jumppack palatines at 13" movement so also get +3" on the charge.
You recommend not taking Lucius & Fulgrim because only one can have Laer blade. For one I think Nineteen is better and Laer is a trap (saves points, more attacks), but the main thing you're sleeping on here is Lucius will supercharge Fulgrim by giving him Preferred Enemy (IC). Any Primarch that mightve stood a chance is now surely toast
Also consider Fulgrim will be Initiative 10 on the charge in a challenge (and actually strikes at initiative step 11 due to legion rule, if it even exists!) thanks to Sudden Strike and Duellist's edge, so lots of bonus attacks even against other Primarchs. Against a Praetor thats 5 extra so he'd have 12 on the charge 😂
Good points by all of you really, I’ve just fallen into the pit of not getting the rend number too many times so it puts me off (my not playing as the legion has let me down here, I’ve mainly had eidolon played against me, or a generic praetor)
If we’re calling quitting your job a retreat! The legions on terra were all warp scum anyway! The cold hard logic of victory is all the IV care about! Plus only about 5mins before the Weaters turned!
What I find weird is that somehow you can see thru a smoke screen and shrouded with night vision, but not with the EC sonic radar. ”Fysiks!” -James Workshop.
Super wierd mate; I mean the genesmithing of the night lords eyes vs… er the EC genesmithing doesn’t allow the same stuff? Why aren’t they doing the good fleshcrafting then?!
Hey mate sorry for the late reply I had a consider and forgot to come back, we will be doing a general consul run down though Heralds: awesome in general and will give line to karkophani squads so I’d say great in the 3rd company elite RoW particularly (but pretty much everywhere) Libby’s just generally amazing all the time ever Chaplains will make your combat squads much harder hitting so your glass cannon squads don’t take as many hits (as you’ll kill more of them first) One out of left field a bit would be a Pravian with Vorax! With the vorax effectively hitting on the I5 step and a high Move of 8 to trigger the legion trait more often!
@@BearfootMiniatures No worries as at least you replied. I am looking forward to a general Consul review for all the Legions since they are a great force multiplier. It’s also nice to hear some “out of left field” choices too. I do feel bad for the Champion since even he has a hard time finding love in the 3rd.
@@anaknangfilipina5846 I think they’re fairly decent: paragons striking at potentially I6 is nothing to sniff at, and fearless when he’s in a challenge I just think a squad wide buff makes the chaplain better in the end (and more likely of just winning the combat over gaining fearless)
Phenix are also all characters meaning they can all take one wounds before losing a model in the squad, which is a huge deal They are a very good defensive unit with skill unmacthed + shriekers On the opposite I fond the palatine blades to be a crappy unit as they are way too expensive for what they bring Compare them with a regular vet squad and the palatine blade will feel bad :( Too bad the models are so good for bad rules... On a sidenote they pay a very cheap price for their jump pack compared to other units such as reavers/rampagers
Good shout on the character trait of them but really, it’s a strange place I to be I think, though I suppose they are guards and a a preator with thammer covers lots of sins

Good tactic there!
Do you find they’re doing well against dreads as you listed them as good against dreads!?

Thanks for doing these legion reviews. Very appreciated to further my understanding
Cheers mate! Thanks for watching and glad you found it helpful (I never know if I’ve done a good job especially on legions I’ve only played against)
I actually quite rate nineteen on Lucius rending 3+ and cheaper I do think is the better option
and not a specialist weapon so +1A, I prefer Nineteen by a long way
Nineteen is 100% better. The laer blade is kinda a trap tbh. Duelists edge doesn't even combo with his +1 attack rule

The main reason to take Saul Tarvitz is for narrative reasons I think!
Ye 100%, bit of a shame how he matches up beyond that he’s meant to die I suppose
