As someone who owns a media production company and film production house, I can honestly say: "I freaking love you guys!" It's so amazing to watch you innovate and problem solve. Your finalized work proves how you can work smart, and inexpensive in many cases, and get amazing results! Great work! Just... amazing stuff!
As a compositor, I totally get what you felt in the last shot. It just doesn't sit right and 98 percent of the people out there won't care but it will sting you like a needle everytime you will see it so you spend those hours and they are worth it! Great comp hacks man!
@@Dr.W.Krueger Indeed when clint eastwood was filming on set and someone said can we do it one more time again ? He said in his cranky voice: why?! Do you really want waste everybody's time here ? To make it 10 percent better? And as a perfectionist that got me thinking... and he is right, sometimes it just isn't worth all the extra time Thats how you go over budget and get burned out
You are a very talented painter and filmmaker, ive never seen such a talented person in my whole live. Also this video made my day, thank you for your effort ❤❤
My goodness, you can even paint really well on top of everything else lol. I've been watching a bunch of your videos lately and you're unbelievably skilled in so many disciplines, it blows my mind a bit!
I love how you used logic to make your shadow as accurate as possible to how it would really be- it's attention to those little details that makes me really appreciate how much you guys really care about what you're doing
OMG compositing is my Achilles heal. The smooth blend. The drip of water down Dr. Saddler's hand by Dr. Malcolm as he suavely caresses' her hand. The warm kiss in the quiet elevator before Ryan Gosling bashes the hitman's brains in with his boot. This is the one shot... the final shot from Sherriff Brody's rifle as the ship sinks into the ocean. The bullet flying into the water demons mouth, piercing the tank and exploding the shark into oblivion. This is what compositing is for me.
I LOVE that it has this very textural, real-life feel - a bit of that old school "STYLIZED Hollywood" look similar to an older film that used matte paintings and I really love that! And this is stuff we can do on any budget or NO budget with just some creative thinking. So I really appreciate this!
Can't say how much i love your work guys! Your "low profile" and kind of "homemade" approach brings the whole process to the basic fundamentals of film-making... at the cost of TONS of effort in TONS of multidisciplinary arts (2d graphics; 3d modeling and rendering, 3d printing, miniatures making painting and weathering, photography, color correction and b/w esthetics , and so on). I think that there is only one word that can describe all this: PASSION! Keep going with your channels guys... it's just a School of VideoArts... better than NEFTA!
It's all looking soooooooo good. Love the slightly surreal look you rarely see in the digital world these days. Definitely brings old school film vibes.
You guys are amazing. I love it. The stylization you add to the composites, your filming techniques, and your model building/painting are so good. Top-tier creativity and fantastic work all around!
Genius! You are creative geniuses. I liked the way you all made this film. Passion and care. I hope this film becomes a good milestone in your lives. Cheers
guys like you are artisans and you will keep the ART of cinema alive even if Hollywood is beginning to kill it. amazing work you are a really good artist in all your craft
I really aim to have a team of passionate people like you guys have. Its just an example when good people come together , amazing things happen like your Short film. In this era of low attention span i watched through you entire Short film of 25mins without skipping a second. Was that invested
Just wonderful, and so inspiring! Truly the art of great filmmaking, which does not depend on Hollywood budgets. Thank you, please keep on making videos like this.
And yet another amazing video! Just love to see this and the process. It is very often you spend a few hours, days or months on a 5 second clip! :)) Amazing talent and dedication on a low to non existing budget. It's so inspiring to see this, it keeps me and I think a lot of people watching this going and trying to achieve a dream. Thank you!
Your work is just great! You really inspired me to start my own film project with miniatures. Since I build and paint miniatures and dioramas for years now and love films and filming as well, I finally found some great ideas. I love you guys! Thanks for your awesome videos and films!
We just do it by eye. And since we filmed everything in my yard I would just go to my computer, drop the filmed clip into the shot, and if it didn't work we would go out, tweak the camera angle and reshoot it. Thanks!
I love this! Both the actual fact that you are doing it and the presentation in your videos. Super entertaining. One though about that cast shadow in blender (the first shot you discuss). It feels like it is being cast from a spotlight instead of a distant light (like the sun would be). That is why the shadow grows as the actor moves forward. It is an interesting effect (and maybe one that you are after?) but it does break the illusion a bit for me.
Wow! Pure art of movie making in just 14mins. I simply enjoyed your presentation. Also have to respect your dedication and hardwork for getting the perfect shots🔥
First of all, what a great job! Some things, I would do different, perhaps better, but most things definitely not. The results are overall so well and done with pation and diligence 😘 Of course, there are several ways to do the jobs, and about the actors shadow - you can make him a 3D layer in AE, put and adjust al light behind what can present a (just the ) shadow on a oriented layer (set to 'only cast shadows') underneath. If needed, add a blurFX with mask/ramp/precomposing stuff. Or double the layer, set the pivot to the feet, make it a 3d-layer and flip it on the x-axis and adjusting the camera / or a composition which is large in high with a layer and the sillouhette on it, distorted by the corner-pinsFX + blur like mentioned before. Just some suggestions I would prefer before activating a laser-cutter or rebuilding the scene in 3D-programs. But using the floor reflection as a reference and basis for the shadow is great! One thing doesn't look right for me - the volumetric light, I'm not sure but I think the lightrays of the upper windows have to move or stay more sticky the center. Oh, and instead of repairing the matte by masks - there are some realy useful tools inside of AE which are fixing (not only) holes inside. I also missing some shadows in the 'in front of NASA building'-shot .The blue/white truck on the left, even if it's casted by boxes. The actors also look somewhat assembled - but that could also be intentional and a concept. The filmcamera on the truck looks a little bit to big for me, but the result and compositing is dope!!!! The miniatures and integration of this lovely paintings are also - surprising - dope. I get the feeling that it's a personality that finds it difficult not to do everything alone. But with this talent, it would be difficult for me too. 😍🤩👌🤘👍
The shadow creation in blender is the coolest thing I've seen in a while. It's so smart.
We did that back in the early 90s to get good shadow approximations for compositing, with both clip-mapped footage and actual 3D proxies.
Cool info! Thanks for sharing!

You really need to know when to stop; for your own sake and for the schedule. 😁 Back in the 90s we called that "massaging a shot to death".
Oh haha, I totally agree. I cut so many corners everywhere but this shot was somehow dear to me so I put in some extra work. 🤣 Thanks a lot!

Hands down my favourite channel on UA-cam. Thanks for putting these fascinating vids up, and for the humour! 🤘
Glad you like them! You are welcome!
The painted buildings look so nice in the shots!
I think so too! Thank you!

Well, at least good enough to paint a background building... 🤣😉
I have a saying about birds flying across a scene. It's a sure sign it's a composited shot and the birds are there to seal the deal.
