  • This special edition of PBP Tips features my part of a recent Randonneurs USA online seminar aimed at helping riders prepare for PBP 2023. I talked generally about lodging, but the presentation touches on a variety of related topics, from getting around with your bike and stuff to storing your baggage while you ride.

Back in 2019 when I got out of the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, I got a taxi to my hotel some 20km from Rambouillet. Got hit by (iirc) somewhere upwards of 130 Euros. Oof! 🤪
On one hand, it's a fast and comfortable alternative to the train. But on the other hand, very painful on the wallet!! 😅

Same for me in 2019. My taxi cost was 300 Euros each way from CDG Airport to Epernon, a village 20km from Rambouillet. 600 Euros is too much. Now I wonder if I should get a folding bike or something? I recall there is some French shipping company that will take a large bike box from CDG to anywhere, but can't recall the name.

I am British living in France, I found the series of PBP tips very essential, it filled an enormous gap not covered elsewhere. Well I had not seen any similar information (in French or English) and done in an organised detailed manner covering the event more from a participants standpoint; yes plenty of info from the organisers side which is what you'd expect. Moving out to Rambouillet has indeed changed things somewhat, but the event has become ever more popular over the years (6,674 registered in 2019). Anyways, with the tips in mind (and more to come?) I shall try and get myself ready for 2023...I tried for 2019 but didn't work out. For me, one intimidating element however is the number of participants, particularly at the start (I am aiming for the 84 start), the risk of accidents seems to be high as people are not necessarily that used to riding so bunched up to together, any thoughts. A huge thanks for your time and effort.

Thank you! The start can indeed be a little intimidating. Best to let the fast riders get out in front of you ... and watch what the other cyclists near you are doing! 84-hour start is in the dark, so be extra careful! Best wishes for 2023!
