    That was brilliant. When I see Steve working like this I am always reminded that horses are smarter and more perceptive than we often give them credit for. They always show us what they need and they home in like a laser when know they're being understood.

    Great educational video, Steve, on how to train a spooking horse on how to get over the spray bottle so you can get the fly spray on them!! And the flies are so bad this year!! At least they are here, same with the midges!! Those little buggers that love to get in the ears and drive the horse crazy! They are very bad around here this year as well. Thank you, again, Steve, for another great video!! Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦 PS I took one of the horses I've been training for 3 years to his first show this past weekend. He's a gorgeous stallion, but he totally acted like a cut horse. He did 2 classes, at 1m 05 , and came 2nd overall. His very first show! And he was up against 64 horses!! So proud of this boy and his half-brother as well, who came 4th overall the weekend before out of 52 horses. Same height and 2 classes as well. Jenn 💖

    I adopted this from previous times you showed it, works great. I typically use a fly spray bottle that has become empty and fill it with water, the bottle then makes the same sound, has the same look, and it still retains a bit of the chemical smell. I walk them forward with small squirts in front of us and slowly escalate until I wave it around a lot, the vapor is drifting back on the horse, etc. If they fidget more, then I squirt MORE. (but obviously don't push too hard that they freak out) ONce they adapt to waving it around, I start bending them and then pull it away if they stop, same as this demo. If they aren't too flighty of a horse, I do this while handwalking them around the facility since they like doing that. I always display the squirt gun for this project as much as possibly and they still want their walkies the second time even knowing there will be some squirting. At the end of the lesson, their head is down and relaxed which I love. I have not tried the lick bribes due to it just being me there but even without, it's amazing how fast you can alter their fear response just be cajoling them to walk towards something instead of away.

    My foal learned to get sprayed from watching the other horses get it first, with no halters and no moving. Now everyone pushes to be the first to get sprayed. Biting flys are a great motivation for them to want to be sprayed to keep the flys from biting them. Uncomfortable to comfortable! Great video for the scared horse and owner.

    Watching this looked like she for some reason did not appreciate Keith rubbing her head. Maybe the touch needs to be more gentle and relaxed, soothing and calm. Just my observation. Could be totally wrong. i really like the heavy sigh Steve makes every now and them. Even i am relaxed here. Feel the pressure gone 😁

  • @ismesis

    Poor Keith is not watching the horse at all. He is waiting for you to call to him. Well-intentioned but late. He also stood with the lick in front of him and the horse was staring at it the whole time. It all worked in spite of this. But if I noticed and felt your frustration then the horse did as well. Keith do not fret it is hard to be perfect like Steve. hahahahahaha

  • @stevethebeard8829
    @stevethebeard8829 5 днів тому

    Keith puts his life in your hands, doesn't he? Dangerous practice right there.
    That could have been done without the lick.
    However, it's a big improvement on this...ua-cam.com/video/ZbVDj0NYzxo/v-deo.htmlsi=-5C0SIPl1OgmQGTv
