Nigel isnt happy about the shedding because he probably eants to keep his hair. The coat acts as insulation against heat too.. not just cold. And he's old... he probably gets too cold at night.
I adore Nigel. He is just such a classic grumpy old man. He's worked out all the tricks he can to avoid being caught and made pretty. Such a character.
One of my friends had a really cute gelding dapple Shetland pony named Dusty. Every year she let her summer camp kids de-shed and shave him as the first of summer projects. Pretty much took a whole day to do. As a testament to his temperament, he enjoyed the heck out of 6 little girls primping and pampering him all day. He was over 45 when he passed. He is still talked about fondly.
My friend had a grumpy shetland boy too, didn't like adults much or strangers but if there was a little kid riding him he'd be so careful he didn't walk through a puddle but would jump over it, haha hardly safe but what if it was two meters deep and the kid can't swim? He had to do extra.

A hundred years ago and more, horse hair was used to stuff upholstered furniture, and chopped and mixed into plaster to strengthen it as a base coat for lath and plaster walls. I've wondered how hard it was to collect all that horse hair, and now I know - it's a major spring crop for horse keepers!

I think you could sell or donate his hair to a fiber arts venue (fiber weaving and knitting stores, Etsy, etc). Some Northwest Coast Indians have made traditional blankets out of their dogs’ hair much like Nigels. You could collect it all in a pillow case for when you have a good amount. The crafters will just tease and card out the dirt, just like a fleece. Nice job taking sweet care of this cutie. I chuckle at all your funny observations. I can relate to him; I’m 83. His coat is a testament to his ancestors . He is the quintessential tough pony. This is why he is such a great survivor . His coat is made for really tough conditions his ancestors had to endure. I cannot help but post again how wonderful your videos would be for children in preschool and to elders in a care facility. Some things never lose their ability to fascinate. Your video production is excellent your mix of music is effective; it is slight enough to not dominate and yet lend to a very relaxing feel. A good tip when working with horses and canines as you said is to end a task with an element of agreement. Oh, the irony: Nigel wants no special attention; just feed him, and leave him -- he doesn't even want you to see him eat. what a little adorable curmudgeon he is! Meanwhile, de-hairing that little pony takes as much time as five full-sized horses. You are so dedicated and he is a very lucky, grumpy old pony. He did look better and better, until the end, that is, when your multiple clippers failed you. You are a good soul, CC to persevere with what Nigel needs, not what he wants, while the rest of your animals (except Tiny) are trying to guilt-trip you into giving them Nigel's time. Wow! Your grooming sessions with Nigel were amazing. You continue to show us that a day taking care of these precious animals is anything but routine, easy, or predictable. We find little Nigel so entertaining with his grumpy personality, but yet so vulnerable and beautiful. You show us that Clever Cowgirl! As with Huckleberry, I could see your concern for him, as he acted very needy. Sometimes it's so difficult to understand what they want, but you gave reassurance. This was such a good learning experience, serious, but yet it had humor. Especially after all your hard work cleaning Nigel up then he rolls in the dirt! But no matter, his beauty shines through, just like you. God bless you and thank you so much.
Nigel is very patient. I love his personality and his prancing around ..He does need a thorough cleaning but what a gorgeous mane and tail he has ! Can see how hard it is to groom him , hopefully you'll find a solution. Can you find Huckleberry a job to do ,to lift his spirits?

Wow! Your grooming sessions with Nigel were amazing. You continue to show us that a day taking care of these precious animals is anything but routine, easy, or predictable. We find little Nigel so entertaining with his grumpy personality, but yet so vulnerable and beautiful. You show us that Clever Cowgirl! As with Huckleberry, I could see your concern for him, as he acted very needy. Sometimes it's so difficult to understand what they want, but you gave reassurance. This was such a good learning experience, serious, but yet it had humor. Especially after all your hard work cleaning Nigel up then he rolls in the dirt! But no matter, his beauty shines through, just like you. God bless you and thank you so much.
Nigel is very patient. I love his personality and his prancing around ..He does need a thorough cleaning but what a gorgeous mane and tail he has ! Can see how hard it is to groom him , hopefully you'll find a solution. Can you find Huckleberry a job to do ,to lift his spirits?
