      I agree. It's crazy the way that music affects our lives it affects every area of our life physical mental spiritual it is in my opinion, life if we didn't have music I think this world would be.. I don't know I don't think we could survive without music to be honest with you I think that there would come a time and away and a place for music to be born let's say for whatever reason it was erased from existence for whatever reason. It would be born again into this world if this world was meant for life, which it is. This is absolutely a very inspiring story a very beautiful story of people that we think are just completely gone but there's still somebody in there! Somebody alive, they just need something to bring that out of them and I strongly believe in music to be that life force for many of us it is definitely and has been for me and has saved my life on countless occasions before my children were born.

      Yes, it happens to millions of seniors. Many old folks are "dumped off" and never visited by their relatives. My wife works in one of these depressing places and she is a better friend to them than their family members. True story.

    • @marythr2617
      @marythr2617 7 років тому +15

      Here my grain of salt 😅. If I get to live long enough that taking care of myself becomes challenging, I will take myself to one of those places right away, without arguing with my relatives or feeling angry about it because by then I would have lived a long life and enjoyed each phase of it, I believe I will want my kids and relatives to live their lives fully too without having to worry about me, if they want to visit cool, if they do not is cool too. My kids will not owe me anything, because when one chooses to be a parent one does everything without expecting anything back, it is your own parenting life experience being "realized" thanks to those kids. So, I am saving for my retirement so I do not become a burden to nobody, I want my relatives to remember me in a positive way (hopefully) :).

      basically
      if i listen to it and i like it i just save said song on a playlist but i probably wont know what the artist name is.

    My nan died about two years ago after a stroke, and I remember walking into her hospital room that day and seeing her screaming for her husband (who'd died almost twenty years earlier). She was confused and terrified and it was absolutely heartbreaking, but I started playing her favourite music on my phone ("Hello Dolly" by Louis Armstrong), and almost immediately she stopped screaming, calmed down and began to dance and sing along to the music. It's honestly incredible what music can do to someone's mind and I'm forever thankful that in that moment, we were able to talk to her quietly because it brought back so much of what she'd lost.

    As someone who works with people with dementia, music is magic. I’ve seen some of my residents who never speak a word or who are always serious, light up and start singing when they hear a familiar song. It brings back memories of them being with their kids or dancing with their spouse or a place they’ve visited. Music has so much power. It’s a very emotional moment for me when I play music for my residents and they light up like this. ❤

      Oliver Sacks was an incredible and ultimately curious man. He died in 2015 or 2016, and was probably already ill with cancer at this point. He wrote fine books as Ian mentioned. He also had prosopagnosia or Face Blindness and could not recognize his own face in a mirror. Probably why he became a neuro-scientist.

    There are many reasons why families choose to put their elder members in nursing homes. A huge reason being that the elderly people have health issues that the family aren't able to take care of/the elderly person needs too much supervision.
    Don't judge peoples decisions.

      I strongly dislike the way this video is presented, as if they did something magical to restore a part of his personality that was lost. People react positively to to the type of music they like. To anyone who has had an older family member to care for, this is "by the book" what you do to keep them happy and entertained. This guy was probably just really bored from sitting in a chair and doing absolutely nothing because his family was too busy with their own lives.

    My Father had Alzheimer's and kind of collapsed into himself, he'd sit and just stare with dead eyes. He had a collection of music he loved and I'd pull out some of it and play it for him. Those dead eyes lit up and a big smile would spread across his face and the feet would start tapping while it played. It does work, folks. He passed 19 years ago yesterday, 3/21/99, I still play that stuff now and remember. Miss you, Dad.
