I'll be honest, my primary concern with laptops these days... is the battery life. Anything less than 6 hours of actual use, with wifi and brightness at over 75%, simply isn't acceptable in a laptop that isn't aimed at gaming.
If you get the 97 wh version, it will last over 6 hours. I have had it last for 10+ hours, with brigtness about 75% and having multiple word and excel docs open. This is also the version with the i7 and then also a 1650.
I still don't get it with ppl using overly bright screens. Even for my phones, I only brighten thr screen only when needed, but I mostly kept any screen 20-30% brightness. If it is dark room, i completely make it 0%.
Really though? If you're sitting at a desk or in a cafe or something like that how much hassle is it, really, to just plug in a wall wart? I mean, I get it if you want to use it on a bench in the park or something like that or on the train and you don't have an outlet at hand.. but other than that?.. you COULD just carry around a power bank or two? I'd much rather have a lighter thinner laptop and have the OPTION of bringing extra power bank(s) if I know I'm going to need the extended off-grid uptime.. plus the added bonus of that is you don't have to have it attached all the time, only when you need to charge it up. My phone has decent battery life, and normally it'll last up to 4 days (Oneplus 6T) simply because I primarily use it as a glorified alarm clock and leave the data&wifi disabled. But when I was into Pokemon Go with my friends I just bought 2 power banks and those did the job perfectly fine keeping my phone up and running throughout an entire afternoon catching dem pokemans.
I bought my 15 7000 for about £800, but it came with 16Gb of RAM, which I use for engineering computer simulations. It works really well for me and is a very quiet machine.
@Stevey TeeVee Usually gaming laptops deliver more performance or the same for less money. Because personally I don't care about the form factor for me a laptop is a laptop and a gaming laptop, in most cases, is as portable as an overpriced dell xps and fits in just as well as this laptop.
Yeah I can see why they went witht he 1050 instead of the 1650 since office tasks aren't going to make use of the power of the 1650 but light photo editing and video editing should make use of the 1050 tho.

For the general market, to get a “do everything alright” laptop, $1,000 is probably a pretty common budget. It isn’t a budget laptop, but it is powerful enough that a student or office worker can probably do everything they need to do and a bit more, such as gaming in your downtime. I work on the cost side of construction (estimating, etc.), and the number pad is an invaluable tool for me. I'm looking to buy a new laptop, and a number pad is a 'must have' feature. Another must have is the menu key. Yes I have to press the Fn key to access it, but that's way better than not having it. For some occupations / hobbies, these really boost productivity.

I have been using one of these as my daily driver since October 2019. You need to undervolt the CPU as the stock config thermal throttles very quickly. You can apply a decent overclock to the GPU. Good value and plenty of upgrade options for storage and memory.

Same! Both laptops that I've been using for the past decade are Dell Inspiron 15. Not much of a great performer but definitely has your back when it comes to reliability.
I have the version of this laptop with a GTX 1650, 97Wh battery (extending into where the hard drive is on the model shown), and a magnesium chassis. It's marketed differently depending on country. In the UK it's the Inspiron 15 7000 (7590). In some countries it's a Vostro.
What are you talking about? "It's ONLY over $1000." "6 cores are OK" when you praise $3k laptops with 4 cores. "The GTX 1050 is slow" yet you call the Intel Iris Plus iGPU a good upgrade on others.
What is with these channels? I get they see the big and best and are used to it. But that doesn't stop the fact that this laptop costs more than a used good condition Surface Laptop or even Pro that you can get for 6-700 dollars. I just got a used like new surface pro 6 for under 600 dollars with keyboard. That blows this thing out of the water besides the GPU. I feel like this ad is a little... On the nose.
So you are trying to say that a surface pro 6 with probably an 8th gen i5 quad core processor can blow this laptop with a 9th gen 6 core i7 processor out of water?
GoodGamer3000 yeah i'd agree with that. I personally use a surface laptop 2 and i bought it mainly for the build quality, screen, keyboard and all that. But in this case i think he is referring to the performance
Impressions after owning the Inspiron 7951 for 9 months!!! I purchased this laptop (for around £700) in September of 2019 with these specs: - i7-9750H with GTX 1050 - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB storage The laptop has served me well over the past year as my daily driver. I'm a university student studying English literature, so my daily tasks involve having 30+ chrome tabs open, running Microsoft Word, Spotify, Powerpoint etc during the workday. However, I am also a gamer who plays indie titles as well as modern triple-A titles. Here, I'll outline the pros and cons of the laptop: Pros: Lightweight relative to performance; really nice keyboard; bright and colour-accurate display; good selection of ports Cons: THERMALS (I'll explain later)*; useless keyboard backlighting; sticky numberpad keys; confusing BIOS; sharp edges on keyboard deck; only around 5 hours battery life (I carry my power brick everywhere so this wasn't really an issue for me) *This laptop runs HOT, reaching high temperatures even when performing minimal tasks like running chrome tabs and playing video. Even though the magnesium-alloy of the chassis is sturdy, it also turns out to be very heat-conductive. The worst spots are the front of the keyboard deck just underneath the screen and the rear panel of the chassis where the fan-grill is located. These two spots get hot enough to the point where they are uncomfortable to touch with your bare skin. I have undervolted my model using ThrottleStop and it still runs almost as hot as it did out of the box. Another important note, THIS IS NOT A GAMING LAPTOP. It may be able to handle lighter tasks such as programming; however, as soon as you engage in gpu/cpu heavy tasks such as gaming and video editing the thermals will bottleneck and framerates/rendering times will worsen. Long story short, these thermal limitations prevent the laptop from making full use of the NVIDIA graphics it contains. Final verdict: This laptop serves as a fantastic thin and light device for activities such as media consumption, office/web browser tasks, and programming. However, the thermal limitations of this laptop are a dealbreaker when it comes to heavier workloads. Personally, I plan on upgrading to either the Eluktronics MAG-15 or the Lenovo Legion Y740. Even though these devices are more expensive, they have much better thermals and more capable GPUs. If you are in the same position as me and are looking for a laptop which is thin and light with the capability to run any game you throw at it, I would HEAVILY recommend giving the MAG-15 a look (as well as the Y740). - Info on MAG-15: ua-cam.com/video/v7I9OuOmXZY/v-deo.html - Info on Legion Y740: ua-cam.com/video/qIYRQV7E1P0/v-deo.html Final final note: This is more of a mistake I made personally rather than an issue with the laptop itself. Like the video states, be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when removing the screws of the back panel; they strip very easily. I'd recommend buying a laptop toolkit from somewhere like ifixit.com before attempting to crack open this bad boy. I managed to strip 3 of the screws on mine and have resigned myself to never accessing the internals in order to avoid the £50-£100 a laptop repair shop would charge me to solve the issue. Feel free to comment if you have any questions this review doesn't answer and I'll do my best to get back to you! Happy shopping!
I hate how 15-inch "value-oriented" laptops such as this one have great specs but are too large for the vast majority and don't have acceptable battery life. If this concept was just condensed into a 13-14 inch form factor with better battery, it would be amazing.
"What u can play with 1050? Stardew valley, cs go, dota?" And here I am playing witcher 3 on HD with my laptop which has I7 6500U 16GB of 1600 Mhz RAM and GTX 950M 4GB DDR3.
As long as I can upgrade storage and memory I would be very happy with that machine. I got an Inspiron 5000 5 years ago and with a couple light upgrades it’s been fine for how I use it. Light video editing , downloading of movies, some document work and web browsing. And what I have now with the upgrade is the 5th gen i7, 16gb ram, 1tb storage, GeForce 920m. I game on consoles so unless my machine dies I am good, but should it die... I will get something like this.
My dad just got an Inspiron 15 5000 at my recommendation. Very similar--Ryzen 5 3500U (4 cores but still really snappy), 8GB RAM, 256 GB NVMe. He's literally going to use it to browse the web and pay bills. It's light enough to take around the house, and he's not going to put enough stuff on it to warrant larger storage (this was our only option, otherwise we would have gotten a 512 GB drive regardless). It's really nice for being like $650 with Office, including 7% sales tax (it was 17% off plus 2% for being a Dell Rewards member). I think it's a great laptop for the lightweight user.
While I appreciate the effort, you guys really should have picked something in the $4-600 range to represent the "laptop you'll actually buy." The average Joe on the street probably has an i5, with 8 gb of ram, and maybe a 1tb hard drive. Definitely nothing with dedicated graphics.

When did a 9750H become a "meh!" processor? Uptil the 7th gen all we had was 4core mainstream gaming chips. Let's be more realistic, compare it to to what we need, rather than what's available. I have an Inspiron 15 7000 from 2018 that died on me a week ago. Slightly different construction, different ports (actually more of them I think...?), probably different specs. It was about $1500 when I got it, hdd not ssd (it was a bit prior to when ssd was really affordable at usable sizes). It did come with 8GB ram back then, so I don't love that they haven't upgraded that in two years. It was marketed as gaming at the time (I don't think they make them as gaming now but it had a decent ish graphics card and light up keys and that's really all they needed to call something gaming in 2018). Mine died suddenly and, despite it saying there were no hardware issues, wiping the hard drive didn't fix it. In fact it's throwing errors that based on internet searches seem to only appear in Inspirons and Dell just tells you to call in warranty rather than mentioning what the errors mean (of course it's just out of warranty so that's useless). For that reason I do not trust Dell anymore. If they were more transparent about things and made an effort of not looking like they were money grabbing, I might be happier with them. But as it stands I do not recommend the Inspiron to anyone who wants something for long term use (they may have the issue fixed in new ones but if a new issue comes up in a few years, I wouldn't trust them to handle it well). Just personal opinion, it's too expensive an investment to deal with a "maybe it'll be fine for me" situation.
I'm honestly getting kind of tired of ltt (and by extension this channel) only EVER reviewing tech that is essentially 800$ up and calling it "affordable" or acting as if it were. That is not affordable. And yes, I've already heard Linus' argument of "you should just buy something expensive since it'll last you longer and therefore carries more value." We've only ever bought 500$ HP's that last about 4 years each before something breaks or goes wrong and I'd say they probably last about the lifetime of 3 Razer Blades. 1st. Sure, something more expensive might last you longer, doesn't mean I can afford it any better 2nd. Often times a 500$ laptop (if it lasts you around 4 years) is a better investment since it will die at some point, yeah, but you buy something with newer specs and newer features. I hope I'll see the day they review a 400-500$ Acer or Hp Pavilion, which btw has had a major redesign and I'd think it would be a really interesting video since it's a workhorse of a laptop series that many among your audience will probably be running with. I love you guys and I get it that reviews of cheaper stuff might inherently seem more "boring" and not drive interest, but I think you're wrong. Sure, not every video, but the occasional nod to what is the great majority of your audience reviewing something actually attainable, would be more than welcome. And if you don't wanna do that, fine, but at least don't call 1000$ laptops "affordable" and find faults in 6-core processors not being a 9900k...
The only thing I don't care for about HP's laptops that bugs the shit out of me is the fact they pre-install McAfee and some other their bloat ware programs. I'll be honest, my primary concern with laptops these days... is the battery life. Anything less than 6 hours of actual use, with wifi and brightness at over 75%, simply isn't acceptable in a laptop that isn't aimed at gaming.
Well this one isn't
If you get the 97 wh version, it will last over 6 hours. I have had it last for 10+ hours, with brigtness about 75% and having multiple word and excel docs open. This is also the version with the i7 and then also a 1650.
I still don't get it with ppl using overly bright screens. Even for my phones, I only brighten thr screen only when needed, but I mostly kept any screen 20-30% brightness. If it is dark room, i completely make it 0%.
@@AlfaPro1337 same. My phone sits at 20 while my computer sits at 0 unless im playing minecraft and cant be bothered to craft torches

Any laptop that costs over $500 is a no from me. "just under $1000" is not a budget or low-end laptop. You talked about it as if it was a chromebook.
In the grand scheme of tech, just under $1000 is definitely budget. The Acer Predator Helios is like $1200 and that's absolutely a budget system.
The way this dude handles the laptop gives me anxiety.
Impressions after owning the Inspiron 7951 for 9 months!!!
I purchased this laptop (for around £700) in September of 2019 with these specs:
- i7-9750H with GTX 1050
- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB storage
The laptop has served me well over the past year as my daily driver. I'm a university student studying English literature, so my daily tasks involve having 30+ chrome tabs open, running Microsoft Word, Spotify, Powerpoint etc during the workday. However, I am also a gamer who plays indie titles as well as modern triple-A titles. Here, I'll outline the pros and cons of the laptop:
Pros: Lightweight relative to performance; really nice keyboard; bright and colour-accurate display; good selection of ports
Cons: THERMALS (I'll explain later)*; useless keyboard backlighting; sticky numberpad keys; confusing BIOS; sharp edges on keyboard deck; only around 5 hours battery life (I carry my power brick everywhere so this wasn't really an issue for me)
*This laptop runs HOT, reaching high temperatures even when performing minimal tasks like running chrome tabs and playing video.
- Info on MAG-15: ua-cam.com/video/v7I9OuOmXZY/v-deo.html
- Info on Legion Y740: ua-cam.com/video/qIYRQV7E1P0/v-deo.html
Final final note: This is more of a mistake I made personally rather than an issue with the laptop itself. Like the video states, be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when removing the screws of the back panel; they strip very easily. I'd recommend buying a laptop toolkit from somewhere like ifixit.com
before attempting to crack open this bad boy.

You actually skipped the part where you take it out of the box. You need to review what unboxing means...
For Anyone that was Wondering what was the song at 4:05, it is "Back in the Days- Andreas Jamsheree"
ty!
LTT: We are making an unboxing channel where you can see the whole unboxing process.
Also LTT: Cuts out whole unboxing
You mean LMG?
@@lookatmylawyerdawgplease potato potato
They have been getting too comfortable tossing stuff in their hands like that at LMG.
I feel like I should say that there's a slighter more expensive version with a over 1 tb storage, 16gb ram and a 1650
I use the calculator button and number pad on my work laptop every day. I couldn't live without it.
6:13 "Oh, don't turn on, this is really not a good time to turn on, why do you keep on turning on."
Every man's struggle.
"The GTX 1050 is disappointing"
Meanwhile most other non-gaming laptops in that price range use a MX150 or integrated graphics
I really dig the channel, its like the quickbits in TechLinked videos - quick and informative AND its not as "animated" and screaming ENTERTAINMENT as a regular LTT one :)
P.S. Oh.. and its more LTT content!!!
Rs6 avant is a mid size wagon with enough room behind the rear seats to fit a 55 inch tv or a whole load of groceries with no infringement on the occupants while the gti is a compact hatch. They are drastically different sizes of car. The rs3 is the same size as the gti. They, plus the Jetta, are all built on the same platform. The a4 is slightly larger, a small midsize sedan. Then the a6 is a larger midsize executive car. So yes in day to day activity you would notice the difference between a compact hatch and a midsize wagon.
"Pretty good" "I guess it's fine" "I'm disappointed".... I do not think this is how you introduce a laptop that costs a thousand bucks and that yout think "most people will buy".
The most expensive laptop an "everyman" would buy is like a $750 USD HP Envy with either an i5 or Ryzen 5, not a $1k last generation Dell Inspiron. Most laptops people buy are more like the HP Pavilion or Dell 15 6000 which are like $500ish. Source: I work for Best Buy
When did a 9750H become a "meh!" processor? Uptil the 7th gen all we had was 4core mainstream gaming chips. Let's be more realistic, compare it to to what we need, rather than what's available. I think Linus does a good job of this.
Also, note that a lot of architecture and construction industry software isn't even optimised to use all cores.
P.S. Love this guy, Alex does some awesome work!
Yeah, the 9570 is plenty strong. It all goes to waste to ask that much for a good cpu only with very little else.
I like how this channel is literally as advertised the stuff you wanted to do on LTT but couldn't. And it is more laid back. Not even those LTT store segues.
Just bought this Laptop today. So far so good.
"512 GB NVMe SSD."
Removes the SSD from the slot, doesn't even see that it is a SATA SSD.
Nice going Alex.
It is not a SATA SSD. I own this thing and it has a proper M.2 NVMe SSD.
@@SohamNag12321 that was definitely a SATA M.2
@@jbmonke read my comment again. I said I own this thing. I opened it up and checked. I ran disk speed tests and it hits 2200 MBps.. does a SATA SSD hit those speeds? Of course not. Don't just look at the form factor
@@adwaitgoku27 it has two m.2 slots. Some brands make it one nvme and one sata
@@SohamNag12321 You really don't know how to spot the difference between SATA and NVMe M.2 SSDS, kid.
Your laptop having a NVMe SSD doesn't change the fact that the one in the video has a SATA SSD.
The outro for ShortCircuit is: "Like, Subscribe, do whatever... Do we have an outro for this?"
They always rip on the 1050 but it’s like half the price of the next gen and you can literally play any game you want at low/med settings at 60fps no problem. This channel always rags on budget builders and it makes me mad. 😡
Seriously. Low spec gamer really showed them that they really overlook low end stuff constantly at LTX last year. I respect LMG but they do not understand what budget means and that some people are fine with or literally can't afford anything better.
I have this laptop and it’s actually really good for the price and runs games really well and is good for it especially when plugged into a separate monitor with keyboard and mouse aswell as another ssd inside
Might as well use a desktop if you're going to use that many peripherals.
flameshana9 that would be a fair point if I didn’t need to use my laptop for school and take it places
"It's just over 1000 dollars"
THEN WHY ARE YOU THROWING IT!?
I'm honestly getting kind of tired of ltt (and by extension this channel) only EVER reviewing tech that is essentially 800$ up and calling it "affordable" or acting as if it were. That is not affordable. And yes, I've already heard Linus' argument of "you should just buy something expensive since it'll last you longer and therefore carries more value." We've only ever bought 500$ HP's that last about 4 years each before something breaks or goes wrong and I'd say they probably last about the lifetime of 3 Razer Blades.
1st. Sure, something more expensive might last you longer, doesn't mean I can afford it any better
2nd.
I expect it on like $200 to $300 laptops but on like the Envy X360 at around 650 to 700 I think it's a bit ridiculous to have McAfee pre-installed.
When you like tech and care about the tech products you buy, $1000 is pretty paltry in the grand scheme. That's not that much. Therefore budget. Again, depends on the person and the priorities
Dennis Premoli if you’re a student you can usually find a $100-$300 discount depending on where you look, I got an hp envy X360 with a Ryzen 5 processor 2 years ago for around $600 after the discounts. My first laptop was like $400 with an 8th gen I7 professor but that died in about a year.
@@React2Quick So you're just gonna cut off an entire manufacturer because they preinstall (which I have never seen) a program you can uninstall in 5 minutes. Doesn't seem like money is much of a priority to you...
@@ZeroDividesByYOU "When you like tech and care about the tech products you buy, $1000 is pretty paltry in the grand scheme. " As I said, not if you don't have those 1000$.
that laptop is more expensive than my desktop gaming pc and it's nowhere near as high of stats. I'm not spending a thousand bucks on a laptop.
@TheGoat lol, like I ever go anywhere except work.
@@IgabodDobagi "I wouldn't pay that much for a thing that I have no use for in the first place!" what a surprise... 🤦♂️
My over 5 year old PC costed less than that laptop and it's got a 970 and 16gb of ram, soooo... yeah for gaming mine still quite handily beats this. The only thing that is beating it in any meaningful way is the cpu.
@@totalermist just because I wouldn't take a laptop anywhere doesn't mean it's not useful at home. I happen to have a laptop that sits on my other desk. But it didn't cost 1000 dollars.
The cpu is great though. So I guess business people aren't interested in gaming performance at all.
You can also get these in a 2-in-1 which is basically a fold over touch screen. We buy a lot of these through work, they're great!
Thank you short circuit for covering this laptop. Didn't know this existed. It's great to see a H series processor and dedicate graphics backed with an Inspiron. Somemore now finished in white, this is fantastic. Lovely lovely.
