Ah, yes, the Bateman Labs Envy-a chair that feels as sharp as it looks. You see, it’s not just about sitting; it’s about dominating your space, much like how Huey Lewis and the News dominated the charts in the '80s. You probably haven't paid attention to the craftsmanship behind most chairs-how could you, when they all look the same? But the Envy, well, it's different.
Let’s talk about that linen upholstery. It’s not just fabric, it’s an experience. Soft to the touch, yet structured, it gives off this refined vibe that’s subtle but undeniable. The kind of texture that makes you want to feel it, even when you’re not sitting down. And then there’s the oak base-polished to perfection. The wood has this rich, warm hue, inviting yet formidable. It says, “I mean business.”
The keyboard and mouse tray? Ingeniously built into the design, with just the right balance of accessibility and authority. It feels like the keys are waiting for you to take control. And the footrest, ergonomically crafted to align with your every move, provides the support you didn’t know you needed but now can’t live without.
But the monitor mount... that’s where things really get exciting. It elevates your screen like a crown jewel, perfectly centered, perfectly balanced, commanding your attention. You can't just look at the screen; you own it. The monitor seems to float, framed by that natural wood grain that both grounds and inspires you.
And you know what the best part is? The Envy doesn’t try too hard. It doesn’t need to. It’s effortlessly perfect, much like Patrick Bateman’s mornings before things... take a turn. And now, standing here in front of it, you can feel it. You want it.
    Hey Hermann look here! 🪓

I also have one of these chairs and really recommend it. It's super comfortable and has held up admirably for several months to two cats (who like the chair and sit on the ottoman a lot!)
My spouse and I both work from home, and I need to be able to set up in an area where they are not, so we don't bother each other's meetings, so I am usually in the living room. I got one of these to replace the TV tray I was using previously, which was terrible. I don't use the monitor stand, instead I have the laptop stand so I can sit my laptop up at eye level, and I have an 80% keyboard on the desk part. I have this chair. Yes, it's expensive as some folks have noted. It's worth every penny, imo. It's hardwood and made in Canada, I'm not sure what folks are really expecting. I even have the space for a full desk but it's in a room that gets INSANELY hot during the summer. I work at home, and my office is unbearable for four months. So yeah, it's expensive, but being able to use it 8 hours a day, five days a week during the summer was a fucking life saver. He made it seem like it's more difficult to get out with the monitor in front of you. It's not, you can easily slide the ottoman back. I have the mount that comes with the monitor arm on a side table near my wall, so at the end of the day if I wanted to take the monitor off and have things look less like an office, I was able to do that in less than a minute. I've seen some comments here from folks in very small apartments. I can tell you this provides all the utility you would look for in a full desk in a much smaller footprint. Nice, well built kit costs money. For the complainers, no one is stopping you from going to Ikea. For me, this was money well spent.

these guys at bateman labs have great customer service. I purchased their original desk attachment for the IKEA Poang chair probably 2 years ago or more now. I didn't find it the most comfortable thing for extended periods of time due to the angles of my arms and wrists.
By the time I had enough time with the desk attachment to figure that out, they came out with a newer, more updated design and offered to just do an exchange for free.
At that time though, I had moved away from using the IKEA Poang as my main 'get work done' chair so I didn't take them up on the offer.
You can also go visit their shop in North Vancouver if you are local to sit in and try their products.
This chair setup would be an absolute dream for me. That price tag though, woah. I've been making do with sitting on my IKEA Soderhamn sofa with my feet up on the coffee table and using the lap board from the previously mentioned Bateman Labs attachment as a "mousepad" board along with 'misc items and coffee cup surface' just sitting on the sofa to my right. The Soderhamn sofa is nice for this setup because it's low, and has a really wide bottom surface cushion, or like...depth wise. Front-to-back distance of the bottom part of the sofa is a lot, so you can lay back pretty nice and my arms are in a nice neutral position.

Commercial office furniture is a whole different beast, this is elitist home office shit. Commercial office seating specifically is often meant to be sat in for at a minimum 6 hours a day and expected to last 10+ years. My herman miller aeron is warrantied for 12 years, I have never had any pain or stiffness after spending easily 10 hours in it which I can't say for any other chair I've ever used even my mattress gets uncomfortable after 8 hours. I tell people constantly if you sit at a desk for long periods of time buy a commercial office chair it doesn't have to be an ergo expensive chair like an aeron or an embody or leap etc even a barebones old school steel case criterion will last you 20 years and they are surprisingly comfortable. Bonus points if you can find a preowned or refurbishing outlet/store nearby you can get things as good as new for 50% cheaper than new often with a warranty still and the option to physically try out different models.

That looks like it could last a good 10-15 years + and maybe only need a cushion swap. If that level of comfort can't be achieved by anything cheaper, that I won't have to worry about taking with me when i move, then the price makes sense for those who can afford imo

I got an Ikea Poang several years ago for a reading chair, which is more-or-less the same basic type of chair, and I ended up loving it as a work chair too even though it's pretty terrible for that purpose at my regular desk (keyboard in lap, monitor is too high, monitor is far away and have to zoom the desktop image, etc). This is a really cool take on what I've been trying to figure out for my chair; the only reason I haven't gone this far is because I like to switch between it, a kneeling chair, standing, a regular chair, and a recumbant bike

Listen i'm all for expensive chairs, but 2700 dollars for a non-leather chair seems crazy, seeing that you can get a Stressless admiral lounger for $2700 WITH an ottoman, and the option for a laptop table that definitely isn't 600 bucks (i can't remember how much it actually was since you have to basically call a furniture store to find anything out). A pretty good deal considering the insanely nice leather options and far heavier duty craftsmanship. Yeah that wood is super nice, but so is a cold rolled steel frame engineered to move with your back as you *recline* (what a concept). This just looks fragile and uncomfortable in comparison. I think i can live without the ottoman monitor attachment (I do own the Stressless btw if it wasn't obvious).

that thing is insane! Against all the principles of good ergonomics, I adopted a semi reclining position similar to this with a swank wicker chair I have + a pouf style ottoman. I just put my laptop in my lap and I'm good to go. I have never had any physical discomfort using this setup, unlike the usual aches and pains I'd get from sitting at a desk, no matter how good my chair was. So that chair looks like the holy grail to me, especially with the swing away desktop feature - that is sooo cool!
The monitor option is ingenious too. I can do without the other accessories but the basic concept is just fab.

This is one of those cases where I definitely would want to try it before buying. That is a huge amount of money for a chair, especially considering the glut of sub $100 chairs that last me 3-5 years before needing to be replaced. Add to that auctions where actual high end chairs are sold due to being undeliverable in my area (like lower end Herman Miller chairs for under $300 after auction) I'm kind of leaning away from this. But honestly it looks great, I applaud their ingenuity for the modular system, and I hope they make a lot of them for people.

    • @fezik8870
      @fezik8870 Місяць тому +34

It's really not though, sure it's expensive but there's a lot of labour going into that piece of furniture. the slabs of wood for the laptop table and the side table are both edge laminated to get the width. Unless they've found someone willing to do custom runs of a low volume specialty product like that in the specific wood they prefer(nobody's doing that) , they're laminating that wood in house. that means squaring the surfaces, probably domino jointing them for added strength in the glue-up then finishing the stock, all before they make the first cut for the actual furniture. All the visible joints are doable with a CNC but to get the fitment seen in video they'd have to sand and finish by hand for final fit. All that isn't even touching on the finish, anything that isn't a flat surface is getting done by hand on the sanding end of things.
All this is being done in B.C. where minimum wage is almost 18$Cad/hr and I guarantee they aren't paying that little for the kinds of people who can consistently produce work to that level with little enough wastage to be viable.

about a year back I picked up some hospital/medical recliners at a thrift store and they turned out to be the most ideal computer chair I've ever used. I'm surprised that there aren't more chairs like this. Most gaming chairs don't have a leg rest. That's extremely uncomfortable in the long run. Sitting at a wider angle (130°) is actually healthier than always maintaining a 90 degree angle. Basically, the best position is always the next one, but not everyone can work like standing up (I can't).
I'm a hobby woodworker myself and I have to say, this is fantastic work! Very well thought out and, from what you can see, excellently crafted. The only problem will be that you can't adjust the chair. With more flexibility here, I would buy it immediately. If they deliver to the EU..

Eh, my setup might not be the most ergonomic for actually sitting up close to play FPS games and the like (which I play with a M+KB), but for less than that I got a large powered recliner (with adjustable headrest) big enough for my bulk, and eventually I got a rotating side table for misc. stuff (cup, phone, etc.), and my TV is on a table in front of me, close enough that my feet go under it when reclining. Works pretty well since I use my computer to watch videos (mostly YT, but other things as well) extensively, and I mostly play with a controller, and I use a Rii wireless keyboard to control video playback.
I seriously doubt I'd find this Envy Armchair nearly as comfortable to use compared to my existing setup.
EDIT: Oh, I'm sure it has good build quality and comfortable enough cushioned surfaces, and the modular slots for accessories are a fine idea, but I'm not rich, and even if I was I'd keep with my existing setup because it works for me.
