BMW 330ci E46 SMG/SSG Transmission Pump troubleshooting / replacement (Non M3)

- SMG Problems. My 2004 BMW e46 330ci has given me the cog of death on the instrument panel... The light looks like a gear with an exclamation point in the middle. Perhaps it should be a dollar sign in the cog instead. I asked a local mechanic the cost to look into this and it quickly became clear that the repair costs would exceed the book value of the car. This will be a boring video for 99.9% of you, but may just save the day for someone who had my problem. #smg #ssg #e46
This literally stopped the car from shifting out of first gear into neutral and I could not start it.
The car shifter says it's SMG - it has a sequential manual gearbox, but it is NOT an M3. It has also been called SSG to not be confused with the M3 equipment which is very different. It seems to be a rare car with a funky transmission. Here I will show you part of the troubleshooting procedure I worked through to get the car running again. I use a ratcheting 10mm wrench, Torx t30 bits, a new hydraulic SMG Pump, a flex head ratcheting 17mm wrench for the best fit on the tank cap, a fluid pump, and Pentosin CHF 11s hydraulic fluid.
Watch here as I decide it needs more fluid to work. • BMW 2004 e46 330ci SSG... Ultimately, this was not enough, so here we are continuing to diagnose the problem and replace the pump.
The car is jacked up, the heat shield is removed to expose the hydraulic pump and fluid tank. I test the pump, replace the pump, refill the fluid, and test drive. Ultimately, this seems to have solved the problem of the car not shifting.
I do a test drive and show the shifting and dash readouts. Is the car fixed? Time will tell, but I think this was the answer to a serious problem that left me stranded in traffic.

Your old pump probably has a lot of carbon buildup which explains the intermittent issue. Open up the pump motor and clean it out. Maybe put in a new carbon brushing.
Hello, I recently bought a BMW e46 330 Ci car with SMG 1 transmission. But shortly after driving the car I noticed that when I stop in neutral the SMG pump kicks in for 20 seconds. Do you think this is normal?
@@ersunbekir5012 check your parking spot for drips. Check the transmission/pump/reservoir for leakage. Check the fluid level in the tank.

My 2004 BMW 330i SMG/SSG has the same symptoms. i just installed the same SMG Hydraulic Pump and Pentosin CHF11S fluid. After the installation, the gear is still in FcogN and not starting. I am getting the BMW code 4EF4 Shift-Travel Sensor. Do you know how to fix it? Thanks

I have a BMW 330 SMG. A few days ago it happened to me that
When you move the gear lever you can hear the pump and clutch operating but it sounds intermittent. The interior lighting focus raises and lowers the intensity.
It seems that the pump motor turns on and off. When trying to shift into first gear it suddenly comes in but then shifts back to N and then an error code comes on on the dashboard indicating F gear N

Never had a issue. Just gonna freshen her up. She has 186K miles.

There is a bleeding procedure u should do with INPA, the pump is pumping a bit to often for my feeling. The accumulators loose their nitrogen charge over time so u may get problems of overheating the pump or not enough pressure during high demands.

Great video! Did the new pump come with new seal or did you reuse the old seal? If you reused the old seal have you had any leaking issues since the video? Lastly, do you know where I could purchase a new seal if I wanted/needed a new seal. Thanks in advance!
it did come with a new seal. I bet if you took your old one to a good auto parts shop they could match it.

Hey there. I love the video. I’ve been searching for about a year on how to fix this issue on my car. But I look at your list and see two pumps. One is 200 and one is 1200. Which I do I get? Mine has the same issue yours did.
that's the difference in OEM and off brands. I think the one I got is a little louder than the OEM part.
