The Rift - A Star Trek fan production (2022)

  • As the title reveals this is a short fan made Star Trek tribute film...
The film is written, directed, edited and post-processed by me (janowski4563), a true Star Trek "nerd" who, since watching the Star Trek original series on TV as a child, have had a dream to make a film with the story set in the wonderful future created by Gene Roddenberry. With the help of some dedicated friends, colleagues and students, as well as the fortunate possibility to use the studio and production equipment at the school where I teach media production, I/we gave it a shot...
With no budget at all (if you don't count the few Star Trek uniforms and a bunch of 3D/AE plugins that I personally invested in), gradually having learned more and more about CGI work in AE throughout the three years(!) long project (by trials and countless errors), and a bunch of necessary compromises and "kill-your-darlings" along the road to keep the allowed maximum lenth for a Star Trek fan production (15 mins), the film is finally ready.
    Filmed on Canon EOS 800D.
    Edited on Adobe Premiere Pro.
Post production and CGI made in Adobe After Effects (with great help of the Video Copilot plugin "3D Elements").
Music compiled using "Pro Scores - Cinematic Music Design Tools", purchased from Video Copilot.
    All actors/actresses are dedicated amateurs.
We have strived to make the project in accordance with the rules for Star Trek fan films found on this page:
    intl.startrek....
“Star Trek and all related marks, logos and characters are solely owned by CBS Studios Inc. This fan production is not endorsed by, sponsored by, nor affiliated with CBS, Paramount Pictures, or any other Star Trek franchise, and is a non-commercial fan-made film intended for recreational use. No commercial exhibition or distribution is permitted. No alleged independent rights will be asserted against CBS or Paramount Pictures.”

Uniforms, acting, background and equipment is all over the place - exactly as i would imagine a research station in the Star Trek universe. As i am related and friends with several laboratory staff members in real life, i can surmise that this is exactly the conditions research staff have to work, reused working clothes, equipment that work due to duct tape and prayer, and so on.
    Great work of everyone involved.

I am ever amazed at how much a layman can accomplish with only household computers and common household tools. The Trek fandom, and others as well, have taken it upon themselves to further and guide their fantasy universe to beyond the final frontier. And....I love the creative sparks they bring to one of MY favorite universes as well. Thank you for stretching my imagination too. I enjoyed your film very much.

Thank you all for your mainly kind comments! Like it said in the description we had to make quite a deal of compromises to, not at least to keep it within the Star Trek fan films guidelines, but it finally ended up finished. I have now decided, mainly because of your very kind comments, to make a sequel, where hopefully much of what was cut out of the first episode will be explained. Thank you again for your support and kind comments! 🙂

There was definitely a lot of stress on that station. The situation had me pondering multi-decade postings on these out of the way research stations - the security officer was overly cautious- or maybe she wasn’t! So many ways this story could go, congratulations to the writers for such an interesting plot. I am looking forward to your sequel! 👍🏆

I love the pacing, the editing, the characters and the intrigue. This is in my opinion a cut above some other offerings out there, with all due deference to those fan films making the effort. I shall do my best to spread the word. On a different note I must declare my completely mature and sensible schoolboy crush on Dr. Cillinopoulos. Don't tell anyone though! 😄

Great job cast and crew! It is amazing to see the seeds of the original Star Trek grow in so many directions. From all the series, movies and most of all the fan films. They don’t often have the big budget or the most technical sets, but it is still storytelling just the same. Remember, your critics make you stronger. Thanks for the journey!

This story has potential in the greatest tradition of star trek, however, the first character, the hostile female, whose name escapes me, is not a usual character for star trek. I would be interested in seeing where this goes.

Hello there. 🙂 Thank you so much. And, you're quite right about the LCARS panels. In the original screenplay there was a more detailed explanation about this "anachronism", but when we had to cut it down to fit the 15 min timeframe, most of that disappeared alas... Hoping to make a sequel soon... 🙂

wonderful effort, good result overall, hope you continue to grow and poroduce more.
    I have one beef/constructive crit about writing/blocking.
It stems from a relatively subtle aspect of Roddenberry’s vision: that our society as a whole has evolved in 3 [now 2.5] centuries.
To capture Roddenberry’s Trek, one must assume that, by our standards, all Starfleet characters went to excellent extremely enlightened liberal arts schools, had great therapists and family counsellors and school counsellors who caught every issue when they were 5 or 10 or 15 years old [not waiting 15 or 20 more years for it to fester]. Its challenging to write because this eliminates so many plot points that work in stories set in the present day.
Specifically, in Roddenberry’s Trek, a Starfleet officer displaying such obvious jealousy & bullying behavior that it interfered with her duty [as we see in the first scene] would immediately be noticed as very weird [about like how we would react to a college kid wetting the bed] and addressed. She’d be sent to the equivalent of Counselor Trois / Dr. McKenna, maybe given medical leave . More to the point, that would’ve happened 20 or 30 years earlier].

And I thought they didn't have televisions in the 23rd and 24th century she clearly has a remote she should have just said screen off unless she's one of those rare Starfleet officers that collect antique televisions from the 20th and 21st centuries and rewire them replace a few parts and make them view screens even subspace transmitters you can always tell when you're talking on one of these old antiques because usually on a substrates transmission they can't have full video it just shows a picture of someone the LG view screens are particularly bad
