Recovering and fixing a Pettibone crane

  • In this video I help Andrew recover his Pettibone 25 multikrane. When we do recover it, the oil was trapped in the cylinders (even after letting it sit). The engine hydrolocked and would not run right after. I ended up getting the crane from Andrew and fixing it up to use with building my own house and other various projects.

I know the crane is running now. Just a suggestion from an old mechanic, when you had the motor down that far anyway. I would have put new valve seals in it and done a poor man valve seating using a drill and lapping compound . It will Make the valves act like new. And while the pan was off check each main bearing and rod bearing one at a time. It may take more time but in the long run if you find something it’s better to fix it now when the engine is apart. Great job, Jesse...enjoy your vids, immensely. Hard work ethic and common sense. Getting rare these days and it's refreshing to see you getting the most out of both. And thank you especially for your raising of our flag at the end. Great end to a great video. Keep up the good work, young man.

I've always loved cranes. I worked under some of the best operators in the world for 37 years. They were safe, secure, only taking signals from one person. That way everyone stayed safe. We had a few deaths working under these cranes over the years but mostly caused by lack of safety attention. Never ever lift more than the machine was rated for. That will get you in trouble faster than anything. She sounded pretty decent for an old Pettibone. These cranes made America dreams come true !

Very nice Vid my friend. The smoke you see after you start it is no doubt normal seeing how old the machine is. When it sits, it loads up with oil along with worn rings it will smoke a bit. But nothing to worry about. You did a good job on it. When you were trying to get that oil pan off, it reminded me of when I replaced my oil pan on my Dodge Ram 1500 5.7...lol Took me a good 8 hrs! Had to do the same thing ie...Remove motor mounts, drive shaft, brackets etc, then jack up the motor. A REAL PAIN! Anyway, great job boss!
