Not an official part of the Metal Gear storyline but it was the first one known to us here in the United States before the internet was available.
I still find the game rather enjoyable each time I have played this one.
Just about all of the secrets have been found and 100% completion to my knowledge. -

Got this game on Christmas way back in 1989. Still remember that 1st morning. I thought the game was pretty hard that 1st day. Without the full map it came with it would have been REALLY hard. Watching this video I didn't realize you could skip that much of the game and still win. Great to re-live it again on youtube.
This game was revolutionary with it's stealth approach rather than just charge in with guns blazing. Lots to do, good music, good graphics and great story. I remember being disappointed that the Metal Gear wasn't actually in the game which I thought was odd.
Anyway, this is one of only two games that weren't stolen when my house was broken into, only because I had let a friend borrow it. Thank you!

It is sad that the dogs had better AI than Big Boss. Very anticlimactic.
The most annoying thing is all the key cards and having to try each one for every door. Also, what sense does it make that you can't wear a gas mask and use a key card at the same time?
The mask has no strap, and Snake has only one useable hand.

The first two minutes of the game of Snake being outside needs to be in the possible Metal Gear remake, but Snake finds a little river and swims under there and reaches the base and starts off in the MSX2 beginning.
Ever noticed how Snake makes an amphibious insertion into Shadow Moses in MGS1 as well?
In fact, if you play the first two Metal Gear games you'll be shocked at just how much stuff is repeated in MGS. Most players don't know about it because the first two games weren't widely played (the original MSX2 versions, anyway).
@@mr.battle20 I played a little bit of the msx2 versions. I was just saying having players have the option to either do what they did the the NES version, having Solid Snake enter the fortress by jumping off plane with the other three soldiers who can be a art of the operation( traitors, maybe), and have you either drive through the base or hide in trucks (similar to Ground Zeroes), or find a river and swim underneath into the Outer Heaven Fortress. Or just skip it and just see the scene mimicking like what you said in MGS1 when Snake takes out his goggles.
Big Boss' alzheimer's really shows when it comes to this mission. "He forget to tell you anything about this mission!"
UA-cam is amazing. I would shit a brick if I came across a Metal Gear playthrough on TV but I wasn't at all surprised when I looked up Metal Gear NES on youtube and INSTANTLY saw the full game being played (along with dozens of other videos about the NES version of Metal Gear).
In 20-30 years, computers are going to be pretty cool.

1:18:43 For those of you guys who didn't know there's a trick or glitch here to skip this part and immediately fight Big Boss, you just have to turn right when you're standing in this exact position.
I bet some metal gear fans haven't heard of these games until recently in and realize this makes a lot more sense
Genesis needed a version of this game. Even for 1989 this is pretty cool and very deep.
This came out in 87.

I don't think he was meant to reach a level or martyrdom...he was erased from history and he gracefully accepted his fate.
This is the non-canon version of Big Boss named Colonel McTaffy, the one with trained killer scorpions.

@@chemergency That was only in the instruction manual. Back then videogame companies were notorious for letting third parties write and print instruction manuals for their games, and usually only gave them a brief summary of what the game is about.
Since most games at the time had very barebones storylines (if any at all), the third parties were given carte blanche to make up whatever BS they want. "Vermon CaTaffy" is an obvious reference to Muammar Gaddafi, the former despot of Libya - who was a major political figure in the 80's.
Apparently Konami forgot to tell them that the game already had an in-depth storyline and "just winging it" wouldn't suffice. The blame rests on Konami's shoulders on this one.

JuicyPlayer no its not you do not fight metal gear or even see metal gear plus they make up characters like this colonel Kataffy or whatever his name is putting characters in that do not exists in the original msx and not even including metal gear as a boss fight means its not the same game plus it was broken as hell msx version the one kojima actually made is not and if the ending is different then how can it lead to the events of phantom pain answer it does not its non cannon the only thing you can thank the nes for is it made the real metal gear games popular so you get games like phantom pain.
+samuraiwarrior87 That made up story with the made up characters is only in the instruction manual. The basic story of Metal Gear on NES is the same as the MSX version in game. I know that the NES version is broken and has a lot of different layouts.
These older games seriously need a remake to the 3D environment.

This is from my all-time favorite franchise.
I actually like this game. It has nothing to do with the MSX versión and yeah, It has terrible flaws and errors, but I enjoy It on a strange way.

Thanks for the upload dude. I recently finished the story of MGS 5 The Phantom Pain what a trip. According to Metal Gear Wiki the last Boss of this game is non other than Venom "punished" Snake a.k.a Big Boss' phantom from The Phantom Pain.

at one point Hideo wanted to make a movie with Sony behind it and him directing.he wanted to have a 150 mil budget,Sony only wanted to give him 100 mil so it never got made.there is an indie mgs film called Philanthropy.pretty good too

Such a great game for its time. And still is. I remember my high school friend brought the game to school. I was looking through the manual and couldn’t believe how much shit you could use in the game . I’m gonna have to buy this game again and play it. Sure wish this was released on ps4.
And all you have to start with is a pack of cigarettes. I guess that explains why Solid Snake smokes as much as he does. He does seem to switch brands, though. In this version, it looks like what he has is a pack of Lucky Strikes; in MGS2: Sons of Liberty (PS2), then he gives Raiden what looks like a pack of Winstons.
I love how the overhead announcement at the end refers to the area as "The Enemy Fortress".

Although this version is overall inferior to the original MSX version, this does have a better alert theme for when you're spotted than the original.

The NES version is very different than the MSX version...
I once got this version in a CD that had all NES games and I was very confused as to why it was so different than the other one I saw.
I finally know the difference now lol

The enemy uniform doesn't work like you think.
The only thing the enemy uniform is used for is like a key card. It gets you into the building behind the tank and that is it.

So was this the very first instance of the "your boss was the villain the entire time!" twist in a game ever?
It's amazing how this actually has a lot of the original MSX game yet everything they changed makes the game worse. The number of cheap alarms here is just way too high even just at the beginning of the game (the original leaves this for later). The colors here look a lot worse, and the fact everytime you die you GO BACK TO THE FIRST SCREEN OF THE GAME is completely bonkers. Was it too hard to add one single letter to the password so it could also save the last elevator/floor you visited?
I finished the original game yesterday (I believe it was the 4th time I did it), it's still a fantastic game.
Also the translantion here is hideous too. "Check the Way". It seems to be even worse than the MSX one, though there are less stuff missing.
And I like how the iron glove is useless in the NES port. You can just punch the walls without it.

Yeah there was. In the MSX version there was an iron glove you used to find the secret walls you could attach plastic explosive to and blow open.
Mate, I finished the MSX version just a couple of weeks ago for the 4th time in my life. The first secret wall you find is after you become a prisoner. YOu have no items with you, and you must punch walls to find Gray Fox in the next room. You don't have any items and you can still punch through the walls. Just after the boss battle after rescuing Gray Fox, you are in the basement of building 1, there are lot of walls to punch there and you don't have any Iron Glove... because there's no such item on this game.
Just did a quick research here, the Iron Glove is exclusive to the NES version. So they added a item to the game that pretty much doesn't work.
Why does this seem like a lesser of MSX MG? The sprites look better, but..hmmm...
Big Boss likes to use the 5 Words Of Terror known by every small child - "I forgot to tell you". LOL

When it comes to dealing with pits, open the sub-screen as soon as you see the pit starting to open, then go to the "Transceiver" screen, then exit it. The pit will appear to have closed back up, but don't step where it was opened (that part of the pit is still instant death). As long as you're good with skirting the edges, you'll be fine.
It is still simply one of the most memorable to me in the series despite how the characters have developed over time.

I was obsessed with this when it came out. Snakes Revenge too. Never liked the 3D ones. I remember as a kid being stuck in an area where i didn't have a high enough rank to enter, and my 11 year old self called the nintendo tip line and asked what to do, and the guy said "Are you a classy guy? A classy guy?" I was like WTF does that mean, just tell me!!! So yeah, he meant the rank. But yeah, I loved this game so much.
Asked for this game for my 11th birthday, and I still have it.
This game will always live on!

Because this is the NES version. The original version (MSX) is the one which starts on the water entrance. The reason Why they put the original one on the MGS hd collection, is because It's the version that Hideo Kojima worked on it (it wasnt his team who worked on the NES version), and because the MSX version is the best one and i think everyone agrees on that.
Thrash Thrash in addition to that, Metal Gear for MSX was the sole work that laid roots for the one of the most critically acclaimed video game series of all time; Metal Gear Solid series.

Played it back in 1988. Flaws and all, this is still the original Metal Gear to me - for better or worse. And truth be told, I still think it's better than Metal Gear Solid 2.
The original Metal Gear is the MSX one. This is a travesty when compared to the original MSX one.

Erm... my MSX was bought in 1985. I had Metal Gear for MSX before 1988. This makes no sense to me :)
I'm guessing you're from Europe. The MSX was never released the USA. The NES version was the only one available to Americans at the time until it was included in whichever version of MGS3.
gnussyflarkin well it's your opinion. In my opinion, Metal Gear is a series that got better and better with time. When you compare this game to MGS3 or MGS4, then the latter ones win. This game is good, no doubt, but the next installments in the series are even better (here the series mean Metal Gear Solid series and not some damn spin-offs). Many fans don't like MGS2 since it introduced a new protagonist named Raiden (a.k.a Jack the Ripper) after the first chapter of the game.
In Japan, it's known as "kusoge" (a game with a bad reputation).
In the MSX version, game director Hideo Kojima is involved and is known as a masterpiece, but in this Famicom version, Mr. Kojima is not involved at all, and it is considered a "fucking game".

If you mean the solid eye ( Which I think you do, since it's the left eye), it's a piece of equipment used like binoculars, an infrared camera, and it corrects Snake's vision due to his old age. He still has an eye under it
If you're talking about Naked Snake in MGS3, that's the man who becomes Big Boss and is who Solid, Liquid and Solidus are cloned off of. He loses his eye during the events of that game.
The MSX version of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are canon to the MGS series.
I had a VHS tape guide featuring this game. Didn't provide as much information as this walkthrough does.
This is the European NES version. It was released directly by Konami (as opposed to Ultra Games in the United States), and compared to the Japanese (also released directly by Konami) and American release (both of which had a 1987 and 1988 copyright date), this version has a 1989 one.
Imagine this redone in 3D, but still top down. I'd buy it.
+Dragon Butt (ThatsNoMoon) Outer Heaven Productions (I Think i got the name right not sure) was going to do a full blown remake of the MSX metal gear, but sadly that got shut down by Konami, so it was going to happen, but of course guess who crushed our dreams again. David Hayter was even going to be voice acting in it. This was a fanmade remake that was going to be very big, you can find some news on it.

You can avoid the final countdown by running to the right of the door that leads into the last computer room. Just lead in on the right and it skips the to the big boss battle.
