One of the hardest Nintendo games ever made and the most memorable for having the first female
lead character. -

Damn the nostalgia. I used to play this game on my parents NES for hours. When I got lost, my dad told me to take notes. So I got a spiral notebook, a pencil, a pencil sharpener, and an eraser and jotted down everything I came across. Still have the NoteBook today!
Thats awesome
Nice!
Woah
Would you consider sharing a photo? I love to see other people’s maps and notes for games like this
❤
Fun fact: the Japanese version is slightly more difficult by complete accident. When they ported the game from the Famicom Disk System to a NES cartridge they unintentionally broke one of the AI behavior randomizers. For example in the Famicom version Ridley spits his fireballs in completely random arcs instead of all the same arc as seen in this video.
thanks for that, I did find Ridley's fight alot easier than Kraid's
The metroid start screen music is one of my favorite pieces of music in gaming.
It's even better on the FDS.
Mine is the power up sound
And one of the most impressive.
Agreed. It has an Alien vibe to it.
Couldn't agree more
Metroid was one of the first NES games I had.. I'm 31 now and this game STILL somehow gives me goosebumps when I play it. Some of the lower levels & music just give me the creeps to this day.

+wysoft i am 31 also and my dad bought me this game when i was a kid.. i hated it tho as i was never able to figure out how to progress.. it was like a huge confusing maze
Cloud Air back in the day Metroid really required a subscription to Nintendo Power. I remember our local library had Nintendo Power issues, and you could copy the maps on the copy machine.
Agreed. I remember playing NES games like Ice Climber, Super Mario Bros, Wrecking Crew - all very innocent and positive. When I started playing Metroid, I got a complete different feeling. The music gave me goosebumps. At the time I had just seen the movies "Alien" and "Aliens", and got some of the same feeling with this game. When watching this video I caught myself getting goosebumps again.
fast forward to 59:15
ughhhhhhhh
it didn't help that I was never too great at it.. this guy just tears the game up.
I remember my buddy at the time having this. We'd stay up all night on the weekends for weeks trying to beat this...
They had a map in the Nintendo players guide book, it came out years before the SNES. Nintendo put out mags years before the SNES. There was the Nintendo Fun club magazine, that morphed into Nintendo Power about the time SMB II came out.
even that one forgot one energy tank...
Such an iconic soundtrack. Kraid is my personal favorite. So unique. It has a weirdly dreamy, hypnotic sound, kind of like the Song of Storms.
The title screen still makes me shiver
The music truly makes this game. It adds to the creepiness and mystery.
That evacuation was so hard to watch....
💩
@@westmcgee9320 bruh
Some plays also!!!
The whole gameplay was painful...
No need to be perfect but nah...
@@m3rc3b0ss8 That's how it is
This was the first game to really highlight the importance of game guides for me. It took my entire family playing this and keeping a notepad of continue codes to beat this back when it came out.
no way you were beating this shit as a kid without the book holy moly
Great Vid, thx. Metroid is one of my all time favorites. I had one complete go through saved on VHS for many years. Would play it in the background while doing other things. Fun to do it again.
Hardest game or not, it's definitely advanced for the time. When you consider how many sprites Samus has for movement alone, whether it's somersaulting, firing straight up while walking, or whatever else, and then compare it to Mega Man...there IS no comparison.
I love the Blue Bomber, but he can't fire straight up without armor, most of the time not even then. This is true even on the PS2, when he should be able to, yet Samus could do so from the beginning. Until I saw this clip, I didn't think that was possible on the NES. Mind blown.
I know this comment is 8 years old but MegaMan has aged far better than nestroid
@@olsonbryce777 They both aged well in my opinion
Damn 1986 this must’ve blown people away at the time
I've always enjoyed that theme when Samus is spawning in the game such as on 0:47
This game was easy ahead of its time! Easily one of the all time greatest NES classics! Most powerful weapon in the game......SCREW ATTACK !
Which would inspire the original channel behind death battle of the same name
@o i think so
When I played this game years ago, my strategy was totally different. That's why I love this game. It's great seeing how others play it differently.
Samus Aran: the first female protagonist.
And the most RESPECTED female protagonist
not even in the same decade as first
Ms. Pacman
Jack M. She's not a protagonist. Mr. Pacman. And she does nothing that makes her worthy of a protagonist.
No Objections
A protagonist just means the leading character. Ms Pacman is obviously the lead character of Ms Pacman..
+Andrew Smith
Am I the only one who always knew that Samus was a female character?
I mean, her sprite in the very first game is very distinctively female to me, everything from the way she stands to the way she runs.
The screw attack is the true salvation of this game.
An interesting (but weird) thing is that, if anyone has a copy of the Official Nintendo Player's Guide (page 54 in my book) many of the lesser enemies actually have names! They actually took the time to give names to these little fidjuts scuttling, bouncing and flying about.
They only named 18 critters (not counting the bosses), but it's still a nice touch! If I'm going to get exploded, I'd at least like to know by _what._
This game is an 8-bit masterpiece. The music, the graphics, the play control, the story, the exploration, the power ups, the characters, the surprise at the end... 10/10. ;-)
One of my favorite games of all time
It's amazing how this game has so many secrets. Leave no single stone unturned.
1:01:10 some dope video game music
Kraid, protecting himself with chest-high walls before it was cool.
This game had a rather creepy atmosphere for such a great action shooter.
The title screen music is cold and minimal, it gives me a feeling of loneliness. Just put yourself in Samus's boots... You're in deep space, all alone, and everything on this planet is trying to kill you.
Thankfully the main theme kicks in when you descend.
Honestly: out of all of the Metroid games ever made, this is one of them.
What?
@@44bigfreeze well--- uhh... technically he's not wrong.
This comment was ahead of it's time
I remember this game as a kid, and while I thought the gameplay was good, I mostly remember being very, very lost.
The Metroid series was my favorite series in gaming of all time. AND IT STILL IS
(Edit: If you saw my profile picture before it got... ech...ii??, it was Ridley. So sorry for anyone that got confused xD)
Ridley SURE got cute all of a sudden.
+Aggressive Attitude Era SORRY, I changed it. xD
Animu.
Neophyte Omega LOL Obviously. But seriously, I played 1 through 3 and Zero Mission for the GBA. MAN, were they FUN!!!!
+Aggressive Attitude Era Holy shit, Zero Mission was AWESOME. It added so much to the original aka one of the best NES games, so therefore, makes Zero Mission. best GBA game.
(Past Mother 3 but that's Japanese only so...)
I love how morphball bomb sound when they explode sound really destructive
Oh by the way, when I was little and first beat this game, MIND BLOWN when you got all rockets and energy tanks found at the ending!
I LOVE Metroid. Fusion and Zero Mission are so underrated and I remember seeing SA-X for the first time and Adam saying it’s you!!! The music and atmosphere for these games are perfect.
1:39:00 Tourian music reminds me of sections of "Gnomus" from Mussorgski's "Pictures at an Exhibition"...
Metroid Dread hype train!!!
What an incredibly difficult game. I couldnt IMAGINE trying to beat this is a kid without a guide or the internet.
Anyone looking forward to Metroid Dread in the future?
Im really impressed with both the gameplay from the player and also the Brinstar Depths (As I know it from Smash Bros.) theme. Its so good
How did people figure out where to go back when this first came out?
The Nintendo book had a map for this game.
+Jsidhu762 Let's just say we had a lot of time in our hands lol
Exploration. Lots of exploration and memorization
You just went, trial and error. Some people would make maps.
Just take a piece of graphpaper with squares on it, mark it as you go along. 2nd playthrough easy as fuck!
Can not forget that vintage 80's music.
Came back after completing Zero Mission remake. Even in original state this game is awesome
This game brings back memories. I remember having a guide book that Nintendo Power sold to help get me through a few parts in this game when I was a kid. It had a black cover if I remember correctly. It's a shame that I no longer have that book. I'm sure it'd be worth something to someone seeing that I had the only copy among my friends. I've never seen that book again. Still happily have my NES and Metroid though. ^_^
My number 1 video game
Truly, this was a long play.
Im so glad prime was my introduction to the metroid series cuz this just looks fucking Hard! Great game though
Love the run!
This game took me months to finish. Seeing someone do it in 2 hours makes me laugh.
This and Blaster Master were some of the hardest games that I eventually came to be able to curb stomp.
It's pretty fun that Samus can have a lot of energy.
Destroy the Motherbrain at the end of this game to win!
If Samus Aran runs out of energy, the game is over.
After you destroyed the Motherbrain and then you planted the Time Bomb, escape within the time before the bomb explodes to win!
I loved when the system couldn't handle the load and slowed everything down completely...it was like Max Payne but 15 years prior 😂
"Max Payne?..!!" "It's Payne!" (starts shooting)
Along with Xband Soundtrack, The Adventures of Batman and Robin for Sega Genesis, Metroid has my favorite music ever in any game. Super Metroid is my favorite. Amazing soundtrack.
This game made you feel like a rat in a maze
Nice run-through homie!!!
@shiftymerchant That power up is the Varia Suit, which essentially reduces damage taken
Metroid: the worlds greatest 8 bit game
Clonekiller66 As much as I like the Zelda series more than the metroid series, that is true
Clonekiller66
IMO Super Mario Bros 3 is better....
+Clonekiller66 MEH..kid icarus and zelda were up there as well
T&C Surf, and Super Pitfall.
+Clonekiller66 If it's not the best, it's definitely one of the best
Nintendo is das best. Myamoto is a genious.
That part where you were trying to escape the time bomb and keep failing the jumps gave me anxiety
Sweet video!
When I was a kid, I thought Samus was a man. What a shock it was to find out at the end that Samus was actually a woman.
this and kid icarus came out the same day. i played this game for the first week and got kid the next. and still love them both almost a quarter century later.
PLEASE REPLAY THIS GAME
Mother Brain is something else on this game.
So confusing like seriously what were Nintendo thinking!!!
As a kid, i couldn't beat this game until i found the justin baily code or whatever it was, but what i remember was how awesome all the power ups were, like the missles and jump boots.
I always laughed a little hearing Samus get hurt in this game because it sounded like a fart of varying lengths and tones. They still do make me chuckle to this day.
1:02:42 I always had troubles getting out of this long drop as well.
I grew up with the gameboy advanced so it was hard trying to play an old game like metroid. Your comment has encouraged me to try to get back into it.
Strange i had them all but never got to play em full till i endet metroid prime on cube.after that ive seen the games diffrent amd enjoid em really
I can’t believe it takes until 1:38:19 for the titular character to appear
Tourian still scares me to this day. :P
I went directly left and got stuck
It was 16 years ago....
@DarkToasty07 Not only the music, Screw Attack is a term from the game aswell (Samus' spinning jump attack).
Best cliff hanger ending Ever
I remember when I was in elementary school, I told some boys that Samus is really a woman and they were really outraged about it. They didn't want to accept the fact that they were playing a female protagonist
I have nothing against female protagonists as long as they're done well. I do have a problem with them when they're done like Ghostbusters 2016 when it's obviously pandering to feminists and sexist against men.
The cover art of Samus in her space suit was misleading at best. Wouldn't have never guessed that a slender woman was inside that beefed up suit!
Finally one of the best Nintendo games ever
Metroid. Once of the best classic games ever. I always wonder why they never made a Metroid 2 for the NES. They made Metroid 2 for the gameboy which I played that one. It was frustration has heck.
Marcus Devine yea, Return of Samus was frustrating, but I thought it was awesome
Even for a GB game
And when I heard that one of my favorite GB games was getting a remake this September? I almost shat myself
awesome intro music lol love it
28:50 - Gumdrop candies!!
And also this is in the top 3 hardest Nes games I have been trying to beat. Battletoads is up there of course but this game fucks me up early.
1:13:20 bookmark
The “Brinstar Depths” theme in the franchise’s original NES glory definitely has nostalgia to its sequel updated version on the Brinstar Depths stage in “Super Smash Bros. Melee!”
It looks so easy when others play
Kids will never know the sheer joy, and challenge of these old games. I hope there are some parents out there introducing their kids to these absolute classics.
What's with the glitch at 1:29:00? Door in the wrong place? Don't ever remember that.
I wonder how come at 1:26:38 Samus doesn't get the extra box for the energy tank when she lands on it.
Great game
What a wonderful game! Good old memories... Samus is a female???!!! Nintendo understood the concept of the twist ending before Hollywood
LOL. I felt the frustration of my youth watching this guy escape after beating Mother Brain. God - I still hate that segment today.
It was one of the easiest parts of the entire game for me
The game that started it all.
Anyone notice that when Samus is hit, it sounds like she's farting?
At that time, they hadn't yet invented elevator.
how the heck do you not get lost in that game?
@CAWGregoryBlack I remember the Justin bailey code, i called her the princess, from the captain nintendo cartoon. Back in the days. Also started with some upgrades like wave beam.
Very neat. Hope to see Legend Of Zelda soon as well.
Very cool!
I spent a whole day trying to beat this game. I finally made it to mother brain, then ran out of missiles thanks to being knocked around by those flying donut things. I died because I fell into the lava and Samus’ character disappeared because of that glitch. I couldn’t see where he was to get out.
This game has had a tremendous impact on my relationship choices. *runs down a corridor dodging monsters* o7
+Aki Greus you live in a college dormroom huh?
Okay, so I was reading the discription of this long play, and it says memorable for having the first female lead. Well, not quite true: Metroid (and Samus with it) was released in 1986, while Ms. Pac-Man, Lady Bug, Kangaroo, Papri from Girl's Garden, Lady Master from Lady Master Of Kung Fu, and the title character from Ninja Princess all came before Samus. And due to sales, Alis from Phantasy Star is considered more memorable.
Sales =/= memorable
This would make a sick movie. Ridley Scott James Cameron.
Yes. This is do to various controls that were made tight in super metroid. Also, the final battle is a lot tougher in my opinion. Another thing to point out, is the complete lack of a map. With all that said, this is a superb game that got me hooked when I bought it when it came out and made me want to play every metroid after.
That's going to be what's coming down the line, I've had requests from management to do Fusion next.
Other than that I actually liked Zero Mission.
Samus Aran looks good in her leotard at the end.
The Beginning of Samus Aran
