No new comments so here’s mine I love this song. It makes me think about my friend Gabrielle. I met her when she just turned 18. She had a spirit that words cannot describe. With pale white skin and red hair she turned heads. We became best friends within just a few weeks. For the next eight months not a day passed that we didn’t see each other. We shared the pain of being children of abusive families. Then one day her boyfriend came to me and said he was not going to allow her to see me anymore. She called later that night and explained that her boyfriend didn’t like that we spent so much time together and she didn’t want to lose him. I knew he was controlling and didn’t want her to grow strong enough to leave. It worked. I told her please don’t throw your life away...but she left with just a wave. It was five years until I saw her again. I was performing and she just walked out of the crowd like a dream. Once again we were a team. Best friends and her surprise was she had a baby girl Sadly, she also now had a addiction to heroin and was in recovery. She was once again together everyday. We spent days and nights together. Whether it was holding hands or listening to music. Me with the counting crows and her with blue October. As the years passed she fought her addiction. Some days good some not so well. She had a sadness inside her I couldn’t help with no matter how hard I tried. This January the fight was lost and once again she is gone. This time forever. Just today I looked into my daughter’s eyes and could see her once again. I’m hoping she’ll never know the pain her mom lived with. Change change change...don’t waste your life.
She said "How does it feel to be one of the beautiful people? how does it feel to be one of the fortunate ones?"... Her answer to the chorus lines... Well haven't you caught yourself being too afraid of letting go of something or someone, not because he/she/it was good for you, but because you couldn't imagine being alone, staying alone...? What a profound album. All songs starting with "Round here" are about people leaving, leaving people behind, leaving oneself behind. And at the end, this song is all about staying. But for the wrong reasons. Thank you Adam
wow, that just absolutely blew me away. I had no idea this recording existed, and for so long i've been looking for a variation on this song other than the typical live concert version. thanks so much for this. really, my favorite song in existence. i think 50 years from now fans will look back on CC and be shocked that everyone wasn't in absolute awe of their vision. A group ahead of their time.
This is a great song by a total genius!!! I remember when Mr. Jones first came out, I was like what a bunch of lames.. I was 16 then...5 Years later when Recovering the Satalites came out and saved my life, my opinion changed...Great band great song.
The way that they improvise durring certain songs is pure genius. Weather they are doing Good Night Elizabeth in the middle of A Murder of One, or Thunder Road durring Rain King. Pure genious!!!!
That´s one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard. Great lyrics.....as well as an emotional and expressive voice........everything is simply perfect and dreamlike.
..... I love the Counting Crows. Every song just overwhelms me with emotion and makes me feel alive. When I listen to them I know I'm alive. I wish I could find this one somewhere. I'd love to own it.
Sleeping underneath your skin When you open up your wings to speak I wish youd let me in All your life is such a shame All your love is just a dream Open up your eyes You can see the flames of your wasted life You should be ashamed You dont want to waste your life I walk along these hillsides in the summer neath the sunshine I am feathered by the moonlight falling down on me Change, change, change
Ive been watching you for hours Its been years since we were born We were perfect when we started Ive been wondering where weve gone All your life is such a shame All your love is just a dream I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there Counting crows One for sorrow two for joy Three for girls and four for boys Five for silver six for gold and Seven for a secret never to be told Theres a bird that nests inside you
There are some very good acoustic versions of Counting Crows songs, there's an acoustic version of Mr. Jones that's like this, and a version of Round Here as well. The acoustic versions really seem to capture that whole "3am, staring into a half-empty beer bottle" feel, which seems more authentic than the upbeat radio-friendly versions on the albums.
Blue morning blue morning wrapped in strands of fist and bone Curiosity, kitten, Doesnt have to mean youre on your own You can look outside your window He doesnt have to know We can talk awhile, baby We can take it nice and slow All your life is such a shame, shame, shame All your love is just a dream, dream, dream Are you happy when youre sleeping? Does he keep you safe and warm? Does he tell you when youre sorry? Does he tell you when youre wrong?
but thats just the way my 15 year lod mind interperates it....this song speaks volumes to me...i thinks the reason i disected this song so much more than any other is because i can relate to it...and i suppose the way I interperate it the way I do is because in that situation, Im Adam...im sure to someone else, the interperation is diffrent, but they are also adam. Thats the beauty of these songs...espically this one.
Lyrically one of their best, I think it's pipped for me by August & everything after (the song) and Holiday in Spain, possibly Round here as well. Duritz writes some of the best songs, he's up there with Dylan, Paul Simon, Cash & Cohen in my estimation.
I miss hearing CC on the radio back, when good music was appreciated but, now instead of a band that brings tears to my eyes every time is substituted with "artists who's lyrics are so deep such, as "Wake up every mornin' feeling like P.Dedie" and "I kissed a girl and I liked it." So depressing...
This is my favourite version of my favourite song. It works on so many different levels it's like listening to a modern day sonata. I don't that CC are so much a group ahead of their time (especially not the way modern music is going - Rebecca Black? Really? Your lyrics can exist in a world that also contains Adam Duritz, Black Francis and Jimi Hendrix amongst others) as a group that is outside time.
allright...meaning of the song. The girl is in a bad relationship, and adam wants her to be with him, hes letting her know this, but hes not being pushy, hes just letting her know that once she opens up her heart and mind and realizes her mistake he will be there for her. Yes, Kance96 is right as in shes murdering herself by wasting her life and love in the bad relationship. The title of the song has 3 meanings in that sense. A murder for her, a murder for the one lonely crows heart (adam)
and the two impossible "murders of one" one impossible because a murder is essentially one person killing another, and the second being that a murder of one crow is impossible. But those impossibilities are only physical....as i stated in my previous comment, the two are murdering themselves. Adam murders himself by fretting over her wasted love and by setting himself appart from the world because of his love for her. It kills him that she wont "let him in", and that her love is just a dream.
thanks man. that guy came onto th wrong video to be an ass. Yeah, i was being kind of pompous, but the point of stating my age was more to show that these songs still have power...i guess you understood that. Thank you.
Dammit I appreciate that he's feelin it but these songs mean so much to me and he changes the song so much live its like a different song, not the same feeling for the listener ya kno? Just sayin
You gotta understand the only thing that made Adam a profound musical artist was his in-the-moment catharsis of emotion. He wouldn't be himself if he just performed a rehash of words every night. He moves where his deep, raw emotion leads him. That's the beauty of it, but maybe everyone can't get that. The fact is... without that gift no one would ever know what Counting Crows is.
Double meaning title btw. It also means 'a murder of one' as in, the person in the song is wasting their life so they are 'murdering' themselves in a way.
Love this version...special days
special people...special pain
I'm 50! Still love this song. Countless reasons. I feel 25 again listening to it.

I hear you...
Who is cutting onions in here???
my favorite version
"You can see the flames of your wasted life... you should be ashamed..."
Aren't those heart-piercing lyrics? Seriously, he is such a lyrical genius.
My absolute favorite counting crows recording and I am a long time fan. Beautiful rendition of this song - Adam is a true musical genius.
She said "How does it feel to be one of the beautiful people? how does it feel to be one of the fortunate ones?"...
Her answer to the chorus lines... Well haven't you caught yourself being too afraid of letting go of something or someone, not because he/she/it was good for you, but because you couldn't imagine being alone, staying alone...?

..... I love the Counting Crows. Every song just overwhelms me with emotion and makes me feel alive. When I listen to them I know I'm alive. I wish I could find this one somewhere. I'd love to own it.

So beautiful
its nice to hear a song with meaning ....you get that with cc..
this is playing at my funeral for sure
Sleeping underneath your skin
When you open up your wings to speak
I wish youd let me in
All your life is such a shame
All your love is just a dream
Open up your eyes
You can see the flames of your wasted life
You should be ashamed
You dont want to waste your life
I walk along these hillsides in the summer neath the sunshine
I am feathered by the moonlight falling down on me
Change, change, change
Ive been watching you for hours
Its been years since we were born
We were perfect when we started
Ive been wondering where weve gone
All your life is such a shame
All your love is just a dream
I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow
Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there
Counting crows
One for sorrow two for joy
Three for girls and four for boys
Five for silver six for gold and
Seven for a secret never to be told
Theres a bird that nests inside you
oh my god my mind is on the wall right now great stuff
I love this version
never heard this version, thank you
ad
Those who might be wondering the origins of this recording as I was, it can be found on a 1994 bootleg album called 'Carving Out Our Names'.
there is just something so profound in the ending of this song that speaks to me. I dont know why they never did this again
5:43 my favorite part
I think i just cried... and not just because its a sad song... but its just sooo..insane!
thats awesome!
So its a murder as in a group of crows and its a group of one crow = one for sorrow. Clever title that.
That would be great!
some people say all CC songs are sad they should check this out stand up change change change !

Great song, Love this version. Perhaps you could lead us to a downloadable version of this.
And he still is
hells yea
Blue morning blue morning wrapped in strands of fist and bone
Curiosity, kitten,
Doesnt have to mean youre on your own
You can look outside your window
He doesnt have to know
We can talk awhile, baby
We can take it nice and slow
All your life is such a shame, shame, shame
All your love is just a dream, dream, dream
Are you happy when youre sleeping?
Does he keep you safe and warm?

Does he tell you when youre wrong?
No Trolls can touch Adam Duritz.
make that the world

@skip328
I completely agree, but i would probably include vedder as well.

nope, this is it. this is the normal pitch & speed!
0 dislikes... nice.
When/where is this from?

IMO this is miles better than the recorded version, which is probably a top 10-15 CC song for me. But different strokes!
Double meaning title btw. It also means 'a murder of one' as in, the person in the song is wasting their life so they are 'murdering' themselves in a way.
huh. people dont like my interpretation. ah. oh well.
gotta be my fave song of all time, acoustics are sweet! the words of the song ...oh so sweet!
