  • LYRICS: I was down at the New Amsterdam staring at this yellow-haired girl
Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation with this black-haired flamenco dancer
She dances while his father plays guitar
    She's suddenly beautiful
    We all want something beautiful
    I wish I was beautiful
So come dance this silence down through the morning
Cut Maria! Show me some of them Spanish dances
Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones
    Believe in me
    Help me believe in anything
I want to be someone who believes
Mr. Jones and me tell each other fairy tales
    Stare at the beautiful women
"She's looking at you. Ah, no, no, she's looking at me."
    Smiling in the bright lights
    Coming through in stereo
When everybody loves you, you can never be lonely
    I will paint my picture
Paint myself in blue and red and black and gray
All of the beautiful colors are very very meaningful
    Grey is my favorite color
    I felt so symbolic yesterday
    If I knew Picasso
I would buy myself a gray guitar and play
Mr. Jones and me look into the future
    Stare at the beautiful women
    "She's looking at you.
Uh, I don't think so. She's looking at me."
    Standing in the spotlight
I bought myself a gray guitar
When everybody loves me, I will never be lonely
I want to be a lion
Everybody wants to pass as cats
We all want to be big big stars, but we got different reasons for thatBelieve in me because I don't believe in anything
and I want to be someone to believe
Mr. Jones and me stumbling through the barrio
Yeah we stare at the beautiful women
"She's perfect for you, Man, there's got to be somebody for me."
I want to be Bob Dylan
Mr. Jones wishes he was someone just a little more funky
When everybody loves you, son, that's just about as funky as you can be
Mr. Jones and me staring at the video
When I look at the television, I want to see me staring right back at me
We all want to be big stars, but we don't know why and we don't know how
But when everybody loves me, I'm going to be just about as happy as can be
Mr. Jones and me, we're gonna be big stars.

This version is simply amazing. His voice is so strong... I love them! Every song is amazing!

I love how he captures that sort of drunken, closing-time-at-the-bar feel that the lyrics evoke. It's almost as though the album version was the optimistic interpretation, the "yeah, everything will be better when..."
And this version is the "Yeah right, pass me another bottle" version of it.
Somehow I get the feeling that this version evokes the original intent of the lyrics, and that the album version was more of a "radio friendly" fun funky version

Great version. I saw Counting Crows live in Brighton England on Sunday. They were everything I wanted them to be. They hit me strait in the heart.

Nice to see the lyrics typed out. This song was played a lot for free on a TV clip when I first moved to France in 1994. The song said a lot to me about New York and alcoholism. Still in Paris, sober, working on making my second million and giving it all away.

It took me a long time to appreciate his voice, he is a student of music, trust me he knows what he is doing. The more I learn about music theory the more I appreciate his genius. He may wander vocally; but always resolves to the tonic.

you're right. i like how you articulated this. I think about it, and it's an interpretation of what he wrote. I suspect that a "pop song" gets played a million times on the radio, there is less awareness that for the performer, there are a multitude of ways that they can express their songs as, and probably do, in concerts, etc. The more i listen, the more I am grateful for different little gems of creativity, not just the radio version ad nauseum.

When a musician sings a song about being wasted, they may replay the mood that they felt when they wrote it. This can be done while sober.

Wow thats a really good way of looking at it. I always find it interesting when people are like oh Mr. Jones is such a hapy song! I always say really because it's pretty depressing to me, sure it sounds upbeat but not when you really listen, so I like the way you thought of it :)

Marty Jones, an original member of The Himalayans - Adam Duritz's second band I think it was his second band, anyway the band he was in before forming CC. This is prob my fave version of this song, a song which I grew up with and which takes on more meaning now that my life has moved on and changed. My Mr Jones was a Mr Noble.

This song is about standing on stage, performing in front of an adoring audience, whilst you feel like the biggest loser that ever lived. You ask yourself why these people watching love you. You can't understand it. The beautiful girls and who they are looking at, makes you feel so insecure as you think you could never get a girl like that. All of this despite the fact that you may be a wonderfully talented, kind spirited and loving person.....You just can't see it yourself....

I love this song, and I totally agree with your analysis. How perfectly you put it into words. Thankyou! As a matter of fact, I love the original version, but after a few drinks, and some hard knocks from life, this one actually sounds really good! It has a differents feel, and it's interesting that the artists let us see a different quality, and new depth in thier work. A new twist on this really great song.
    Peace & Freedom to All!
