- In December 2024 just before Christmas, a mans body was found inside a tent on Dartmoor. Very little is known about the circumstances surrounding his death but there are some odd questions surrounding it.

When I was a child growing up in Totnes we were always warned about the river Dart, that it 'takes a life each year' Since growing up Like the river Dart the moor has the same reputation. God speed.

I live on the edge of the moor, ive been camping there over 40 years. This is very sad. I also lived in the Scottish Highlands for five years. Im not saying this is the case but hypothermia is responsible for more deaths than most realise wild camping.
Hopefully this raises awareness to wild camping in extreme conditions and being well prepared 👍

Can a small stove fit inside the G2 pot with the larger canister, or is it too short? In the G3, I can fit a 4oz canister with a Soto Windmaster. Would love to fit Soto in G2 with 8oz canister.
Hi. It might be tight. You could probably fit a brs type stove but then you'll have to mod the stove by bending the arms so they go direct into the centre. I've seen someone do it on yt.

I know that the green peak doesn't fit but I just left it on top of the lid with the bag closed around it. Last camp I just put it in a pocket of my pack.
Very sad, terrible how quickly people can find themselves in a position of being homeless. 😔
I know. Very sad. On another note, watched your taiji mods video the other day. Really good and some decent sewing skills there. I'm going to do a comparison against the x dome video and was going to mention your channel and the mods you've done. 👌
@NoviceWildCamper Thanks! I'd still say the sewing is questionable 😁 I think it's a good tent for the money. I believe we're in for some strong winds on the south coast in the next two weeks so I will be testing to see if all the mods help pitching in those conditions which was my main reason for them. We had some pretty cold nights before Xmas, I used to live next to the moor and the fog is another factor, could be anything drugs perhaps, very sad but peaceful place to leave this earth. Hope he didn't suffer rip 🌹

As I have only ever camped at black tor or nearby tor to that has gone from my memory.
Hi. There are lots fairly close but not all can be camped on. Sheepstor is very close, row tor, yes tor, bonehill rocks, chinkwell tor, there's loads.

What Mat where you using, thermarest? Why not the light tour? I’m looking for a winter mat, worried about comfort of the thermarest and concerned about the longevity of the light tour 🤦♂️🤷♂️
@stewartgregson8479 thermarest neo air x therm max large. Mouthful 😂 I've got the light tour as well but I think this is more comfy. Also I was going to do a tent comparison video for space and wanted my largest mat and this is bigger than the lightour. I've had the 5.8r lighttour about a year and been fine although sometimes deflates a bit overnight so you have to be careful making sure the valves seated properly but other than that it's been fine.

My reckoning to the guys death is, he went up to camp, maybe for a long term, so his tent was a normal sight. People would walk past daily and not blink an eye. My condolences to his family.

Very Sad; Homeless knowing you're in winter, I guess The Guy Found His Favourate view & has gone there to die is what I Maybe think was His Mental State. Its Very Sad.

Yeah I usually would prefer to know what's happened in any tragedy... Sometimes there's something to learn from it, or in any case it always makes me uneasy to not know what's gone wrong and to not be able to pay my respects in my own mind properly to the person or people. Anyway... Poor chap. I hope he's loved and remembered by someone and more comfortable where he is now

Theres been bodies found in the river near to me and other than announcing a body has been found there was at least one of them that there was never any details of the person released or whether it was s**cide or whatever. I was very intrigued by it so i followed it in the news but there was nothing past "a body has been found". Ive had friends that have passed before and its been impossible to find any info online about their death, or even an obituary with one of them and there was loads of speculation and multiple things going round/her family were very hush hush about it all and wanted no one at the funeral so i think it happens pretty often that there isnt a lot of info online. My friends both never made the paper, just knew about them through the grapevine. It seems really weird that this info isnt easily accessible because how would u even know if u arent close with the family or people that hear the news via the family/were there at the time of death. People have a right to know these things, they could know the person
Exaclty. If they announce the name then at least you could go pay your respects. Sad.
I've slept out on the moors with totally the wrong gear, like summer sleeping bag in the frost and I lived. I totally don't advise anyone doing it but I don't get some of these deaths. There was a young man who died over night on the moors back in the 1980s and he's never been identified until this day! I did one time camping on the moors meet a man who said he was living out there for like 2 years; told me he'd had frost bite but still lived out there.
That's mad hes living there. Surprised he's not been outed somewhere along the line.

Only update so far is they are saying it as due to weather but still haven't given cause of death or name 🤷🏼♂️

We don't know who found them but yes, killers tend to help and go back to the scene. Not classed a suspicious though so probably not.
Ive read all the posts so i dont want what i write now to land me in the shit in any way its just my belief. So here goes. Ive been through some really dark times and the moor gave solace and hope but if my life was to end there i would consider that to be my place of peace.

Sometimes takes a while to determine cause of death by the coroner, lab tests etc. Plus need to track down next of kin or family members before making announcements in the media.
Yeah but I wouldn't have thought it would take over a month though. Plus releasing his name might help toward finding any relatives etc 🤷🏼♂️

This is so sad. No mention of his name to at least pay respects and honour. I wonder if he was homeless or someone unprepared. If homeless it seeks a little remote unless he was ill and dying so went there to die? I've said before when hiking and wild camping, what if we pass a tent and the person inside could of died? I mean, do people actually check? What makes you go to a tent to check? Maybe the tent was battered down from the winds?

Hopefully the cause of his death and that leading up to it will eventually be released, so that possibly, others can learn by it.
Sad .. for him and those that he left behind.

Perhaps he just went up there like the rest of us, for a bit of solitude. I’m sure he didn’t plan to die up there…just the way it panned out for him. What a place to spend your final moments though.👍🏻

I almost died outdoors once, minus 4, almost choked to death on the cold in my sleep.
Got to be careful out there. -9 is my lowest. Was fine so long as I was in my bag 👍
@@NoviceWildCamperit was a dry few nights so decided to sleep on the wood on the front of a beach hut. Sometimes when travelling, I'm lazy and I'll sleep under a church door or something (rather than setting up my tent), this night I settled on a beach hut. My head must have come out of my sleeping bag, the temp dropped and I woke up choking for what felt like 10 seconds, struggling to get my breath, luckily I hadn't had any alcohol or I might have died that night. Now I understand how dangerous it can be for the homeless, especially when they're drunk or on something else.

Maybe police or people moved him on from the town ,it certainly needs looking into given all stuff in black bags 😮but it is a soldiers habit to put everything they own to keep dry into bags when out on manoeuvres,as it’s a soldiers stomping ground.

@Hobbit55-xw5th no one knows. As I said if homeless why go up a tor to set up camp. Surely you'd be in a town where you might get food, money etc. Albeit a great place for him to go and not get moved on.

I can tell you mean well, and seem like a level headed guy. But using his death, front and center in thumbnail and in the description, on a monetized video, with your pot product placement where you earn Commission.
That seems very careless, and like you are using his circumstances to nake personal profit. Have you given any thought to that?
No ones going to watch this video to buy a pot. And i didn't just want to make a video about his death so incorporated it into a camp video.

@Bushcraft_Bullshit it's a video to let people know what's happened and to warn them of the dangers of winter camping when not experienced. Please don't tell me what to do with my channel. I know yours is just about slating everyone else's but no one else has this issue so maybe you should demonetise your channel as you use everyone else's videos to make money for yourself? Surely that's just profiteering off everyone else?

And profitting off of others "bad" content (my opinion). Is very different than monetizing, and linking ads on a video where you stand to profit of a man who died. I'm not telling you what to do, i was asking if you thought about it, and that it stands to reason that if no one is buying the pot, then it would makes sense, to take down the link out of respect for the man who died.
No one is talking about it, that dosent mean you shouldnt think about using a mans death to make money.
Videos like these are important, and important to think about.

I’ve got two - they are amazing. A thin merino tee-shirt underneath and you are good to go in just about any colder condition. They are not totally waterproof but even if soaked they remain warm. They also dry very fast. Buffalo Special 6 is the long version - no gap to chill your middle. They are advertised as being windproof to 50mph. It’s rare I wear a waterproof - these do the job for most occasions.
Yeah I'm loving this smock. Even the little adjuster in the pocket to tighten the waste. Great design. 👍
@ I’m considering getting the hood which attaches by Velcro. I also have their mittens. I’ve been wearing their kit since 1990.
@ that’s one item I never need to cinch! Problem is that the biggest they sell is 48” chest and I’m a 50”. It’s a very snug fit.
Maybe homeless drug addict, overdosing. Suicidal drug addict overdosing. Someone went looking for him. Family, maybe. That's who could have found em. You never know. Especially when no one else knows. 😊
