- A great one-on-one interview with Sammy Davis Jr. on Terry Wogans BBC show from 1989. Sammy, Frank and Liza were visiting the U.K. as part of the european leg of their Ultimate Event tour.
To think this is a year before he passed on. I can actually see moments here where his voice seems to be strained. He is the world's greatest entertainer. I love him and miss him deeply.
Saw Sammy Davis Junior at the Brighton Hippodrome in the sixties and it was a most magical memorable performance. I had booked a box with my family and my late father came with us and he was overcome. I remember walking down Middle Street with him and I grabbed his arm with excitement at the prospect of seeing this amazing entertainer and I always reconcile Sammy Davis's performance with the happiness of my late father at the Brighton Hippodrome that year. Miss you Sammy.

Davis is proof that the greater the talent the humbler the artist. Look how he just got up and did an impromptu tap dance: no ego, no coaxing, none of this precious wrap-me-in-cotton wool shite you see in so many so called stars today who wouldnt have passed an audition for one of his back up singers.
Yes it is so sad. We lost him way too soon. He was so wonderful. With hind sight you can hear a slight roughness in his voice that wasn't there not long before. It's heartbreaking 💔 looking back. I so wish he hadn't been such a heavy smoker. We would have kept him a lot longer. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
He was such an enormously talented all-around man who could sing, dance, act and come across as the marvelous human being he was during his life. He never forget his roots or his family as he rose in the hierarchy of showbiz. He was much admired and loved by his fans and family. And to see him in this interview approximately a year before his untimely death from throat cancer. RIP, Mr. Bojangles

I love interviewers who just let the guest speak, especially somebody as interesting and wonderful as Sammy Davis Jr. He'd lived such an amazing life, one which can't be contained in a few generic back and forths. Also, he had to fight and work extremely hard to get where he did in the business. Like he said, just hanging out every night aint gonna make it.
This is from April 1989. Davis looks and sounds well here, it's so hard to believe he would be diagnosed with cancer only 3½ months later and pass away within exactly a year. I remember it so well because he died the exact same day as Jim Henson (May 16, 1990).

@@sensimania It was reported that he didn't start to experience symptoms until August of that year.
@@sean2015 I'll play devils advocate and assume that he got the symptoms *investigated* in August of that year, but who knows how long the symptoms were there?!
It's not common for hard working men to get their symptoms checked out in a timely manner (unfortunate but true).
There's no denying we can hear the fluid on his chest in this interview (and at times, clearing his throat)
@@sensimania Davis was a heavy smoker and died much too young (64). Another entertainer who suffered a similar fate was Nat King Cole - he used to smoke three or four packs a day because he thought it made his voice "velvety", and he died when he was only in his late 40s.
Arguably the Greatest entertainer of The 20th century..
Certainly difficult to argue. An absolute mindboggling body of work this man has left for the world to treasure.

I think Sammy was the embodiment of that.
To be honest: of course I know the name, but I never saw him singing or talking. He was so sympathic and warm hearted. His smiling was so nice and as he explain that he had his first appearance in the british television in 1960 that was very impressive for me.
How I've said: I never saw or heared him singing but I know which kind of legend Sammy Davis jr. was, especially as a member of the rat pack.
Sammy Davis sr. passed away nearly exactly 2 years before his son. R.I.P. :(

September 6, 2020 idk I just love Sammy I just recently seen a video interview of his mother after hearing so many stories about her from him. Finally got 2 place a face to the name & I instantly fell in love with her 2🥰🌌🙏🏾

I know this might be controversial amongst his hardocre fans, I love his music, in any case, I am young guy, tracking music back, listening to everything from Elvis gospel to whatever it might be, reading and learning. this is something I have long known but never inquired about: Sammy was a member of the Satanic church, and in that regard I would like to know about interviews about his views on religion, or experiences or something of the likes, inspirations, signs or anything. This went down the line one sammy was already broke 2 frank got rid of Dean Martin replaced Liza. Reason his son died in a plane crashed...jerry call him.on the phone howyou doing partner and Sammy he was get some 10:21 proceedings from frank and never got it during the tour .....
Sinatra did the concert so that Sammy could pay off some of his massive debts.
tom kent That’s true, but also to try and help Dean Martin out of the deep depression he was going through at the time after his son Dean Paul was killed in a tragic plane crash earlier that year. Sadly, Frank’s efforts to help his friend didn’t work. Poor Dean just couldn’t face it and left the tour after just a few shows. That’s when Liza Minnelli was brought in to replace him.

Sammy use to smoke between 4-6 packs of cigarettes a day not exactly what you would call a social smoker, a heavy smoker is someone who smokes 20-30 a day.
This guy was puffing like a steam train hauling 5000 tons of coal up a steep incline... 80-120 a day habit.
People were shocked when he died.. me to as i thought he would have been dead by 1980.
With all due respect, Sammy didn't look well in this interview. But overall he was one was of the best performers/entertainers of all time imo.
Yes,..he had throat cancer right about then and you can hear it in his voice !! That's why he said maybe later he might sing !!!
