Mate, this is the only reaction video I've found by anyone your age that actually seems to get it. He plays the part of the internet itself, and this song is directed squarely at your generation, at those who are living on social media, putting every thought out for public scrutiny...because by starting with that metaphorical iPad so young, they've been addicted to the internet so long they don't even realize it, and certainly can't break that habit, even if they are bored and apathetic. And thus the laugh and the sneer in the final reprise - the internet is effectively your dealer, and you're hooked.
Man, “if we stick together, who knows what we’ll do” is such a slept on line. It sounds so uplifting but in the context it’s anxiety inducing. We literally have no clue what’s gonna happen if we keep going this way.
"And it did all the things we designed it to do." Is the most haunting line in this song. I think he's calling to the addictive nature of the internet and smart devices and how technology addictcted we've become.
I think you're the first person I've seen directly realize that he is playing the character of the Internet. I love the way this song constantly jumps from 0 to 100 and right back down again.
Correction He's playing the founders, designers, and financial backers of the internet. The internet is just content with a sprinkling of human interaction. The malevolence inherent in lines like "And it did all the things we designed it to do" and "if we stick together, who knows what what we'll do" implies that those unknown individuals who force feed us content have ulterior motives when they create something "good" and that we cannot possibly predict what they'll do next, so long as they stick together as a collective with a common goal, and so long as we are not allowed to peer outside of this new technologically designed perception of the world.
i think this song might be one of the hardest songs vocally. the very fast-paced section near the start, the countless moments of going forever without a breath, the laugh, all of the ways he shifts his vocal cords to give a different vibe, the sudden bpm change near the end, and the repeated "anything and everything" at the end, and Bo pulled it off perfectly. More power to ya man!
9:16 imo he's talking from the position of the ones who designed the ipad(and similar tech) to do all the things they designed it to do and then continues with "It was always the plan to put the world in your hand, (literally, a smartphone).
@@JoJoLewis Yes, it's all "Inside" his guest house, which is essentially a studio apartment. It's incredible the creativity and work he put into it! Excellent job with your analysis; it was very thoughtful. Would love to see a reaction to the whole special, even if you have to break it up.
Your reaction was the most fulfilling and pleasureable one of all the reactions I've seen on this song, I don't say that lightly. I usually avoid reaction channels in a wide range, but at the moment I'm obsessed with Bo and his work and I've just binge watched over a dozen reactions of each of his songs from inside and even some from the other 3 shows. I don't usually comment on youtube, but I have to voice my opinion here and I need to say that seeing your initial reaction and body language to the song made me watch intensely your every move (hopefully that didn't creep you out), it was like watching my baby niece seeing a butterfly for the first time. I really appreciate the appreciation you showed to the song, so much so, that I'm going to scour your channel for more Bo reactions. I'll consider subscribing after that.
I remember a time before the internet. I'm that old. The dial up was slow enough to give you time to make a sandwich or two and get something to drink before you could get online to check some really bad HTLM sites. Today you gett annoyed if something takes longer than 5 seconds. Our patience is nonexistent.
7:36 What do you mean? What kind of shitty comedy have you been watching all your live? This is one of the most accurate representations of comedy, it's the best form of art on it's purest and finest. Comedy has always been like this, so glad you liked it.
Bo Burnham is unbelievable. I love this guy. He has great comedy songs, but my favorite songs of his that hit deep (even if they're also very hilarious). I'd recommend From God's Perspective, Art is Dead, and Can't Handle This (Kanye Rant), BUT I would highly recommend if you watch Can't Handle This, follow it up with Are You Happy. They really go hand in hand, and those two back to back are how his Make Happy special ends.
I watch reaction videos all the time. Like way too much. Like thousands and thousands. This is one of my favorite first time reactions to anything I've ever watched. You just completely 'get it' right off rip, your energy is awesome and you have a great perspective. I'm enthusiastically subbing. You having only ~7.6k subs is ridiculous. I wish you all the success in the world JoJo.
It theorized that the Bo we see singing is an AI online speaking to us to get our attention in the first section the second would be when you first found out about the internet and you get hooked and the dark tone at the end with the maniacal laugh shows the dark side of the internet

I can't believe that I haven't seen this video until now. This reaction is awesome! You really caught the essence of Bo's comedy. ❤ ...I think. 🤔 It's kinda hard to tell with a guy like him.
I am so impressed with and excited by your reaction. It is definitely one of the best Bo Burnham reactions I've seen (I've seen a lot) - you get him right off the bat much better than so many other youtubers. And also, you're simply entertaining and insightful to watch :)
I appreciate you addressing that you don’t remember the old days of the internet due to your age. Your facial expressions when he started about the towers screamed “I’m too young for that one”
If you want to fast track into Bo's recent works I highly highly suggest you start with a song from his previous comedy special. Start with Can't Handle This (Kanye Rant). It really sets the tone for what comes next. It was the song that ended his previous tour and it serves as the touch stone for much of the Inside special. Once you steam through his recent works you will probably want to go through his back catalog and see how things progressed. But knowing where things wound up gives watching his earlier work a different sense of things. Welcome to the Internet stands on its own just fine. The but much of the rest of Inside hinges on what we learn from the Kanye Rant. So start there.
Great video, you really were as blown away as I was first time I saw it. If you wanna go deeper I'd recommend Can't Handle This (Kanye Rant) or All Eyes On Me!
You should check out "can't handle this". It's a more personal song about how he deals with his sudden fame and popularity. It's a great song to get to know him a little better.
i have just been down a deep rabbit home watching various people react to this song. Near the end you were talking about how you weren't sure whether he was us talking to the internet, or the internet talking to us. I'm pretty sure that it's both, cuz he very specifically uses words with multiple meanings, or that sound the same as other words, such as "Set our Sights [or sites, meaning websites] and spent our nights waiting for... you, you, insatiable you" Also his use of the word watchable to me works with this because, well, the internet is designed to be watchable; and to watch you right back
"Could i interest you in EVERYTHING, ALL of the Time? Apathy is a TRagedy and Boredom is a Crime", somehow these lines really resonated... Its like its Fobidden by Law to be bored or have a simple life these days..., you are in a "need" for "Content" and "entertainement" to the point of puking it...
You should check out some more Bo, he has a ton of amazing songs, some comedic with bars, some introspective. Words words words is deffiently about bars, country song is funny and true. He has a huge catalog. If you want deep that funny feeling, can't handle this although one of the deeper ones all eyes on me you should do after you have done more so you can understand it better
Agreed. Can't Handle This before All Eyes On Me. Some of his old stuff (Words, Words, Words, Im Bo Yo, 3.14 Apple Pi, etc) is a bit more immature but...I mean he was what 16? Frankly for a 16yo they're relatively mature. Bo's a great one and well worth checking out more of

The nefarious undertones slipped in, just under the surface as though he's playing with you knowing you won't notice the real intention right before blowing it all wide open and mocking you knowing he's already won.
the kid's voices joining in at the end seem like he kidnapped them and forced them to sing at the end (in this context) bc kids shouldnt be singing in this song lol
the worst part is how the music is so upbeat and uplifting but all it does is make it more depressing. as for the apathy and boredom bits the problem with the internet is it is so vast that even if you find yourself getting bored it is so vast that you know you haven't seen close to everything and because it hooked you its impossible to turn away. internet addiction is frankly the most widespread addiction there is and it is the one no one talks about.
