Nirvana loved this parody. When Kurt was asked if Al could parody Smells Like Teen Spirit, his first question was if it was about food. When he was told no, it is about how nobody can understand what he is singing, he thought it was hilarious and gave his full support. Most people in this video are originals from the actual Nirvana video, too.
I also love that Kurt said he knew they had really made it because Weird Al wanted to parody one of their songs. It shows me what kind of person Kurt was that Al was the bar he used to measure their success and makes me love Kurt even more. 💕
@@DodonaWind A lot of artists said that you know you made it big no matter how many songs went gold or platinum when weird al asked to make a parody lol.
I always enjoyed the way he dropped the album name in the lyrics "what are the words....oh Nevermind" into the song and enjoy seeing Dick Van Patton in the audience.
Fun fact: the guy at 6:15 with the rolled up blue sleeves and the sunglasses? That's professional skateboarder Tony Hawk shortly before his rise to fame. They needed extras for the mosh pit part, so they put out a call for people that could dress to fit the aesthetic and got a bunch of skateboarders.
If you want to know how dedicated Weird Al is to his craft, he actually learned how to play the guitar left-handed solely for this song so that he could accurately portray Kurt Cobain in this video and his stage performances.
He also does "style parodies" or as he now likes to refer to them "pastiche". Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO said Weird Al used their style better than they did. The song was called "Dare to be Stupid". I would also recommend "All About the Pentiums" based on "All About the Benjamins" for a funny one though dated as it all references 90's computers.
Nirvana let him use the same sets and he even got a lot of the same actors from the Nirvana music video to reprise their roles. It's the closest he's ever done to a spot-on-match for the music video
I can remember an interview with one of the members of Nirvana, long after the fact, talking about how they watched this video premiere. They were afraid Al would mock them, and that he was going to get them, and that this would be a joke at their expense. Then they watched the video, and loved it, and were laughing out loud. The guy noted that Kurt was laughing the loudest. Then he stopped, and got serious, and said in a much softer, more intense voice, "He made my friend laugh". Kurt Cobain wasn't someone who laughed much. Whenever I see the video for this, I remember. Among Weird Al Yankovic's many triumphs, amidst his accomplishments, there's a small glorious one. For at least a moment, he brought true joy to Nirvana.
Weird Al’s band is truly phenomenal! They can literally play any style of music needed for the parodies and the original songs whip too! They are truly the GOAT!!
In many ways, he doesn't get the credit he deserves as an artist or lyricist. Kurt Cobain reportedly asked Weird Al if the parody was going to be about food. Al responded no it's about how we can't understand the lyrics. Kurt laughed and agreed From what I understand, many of the parts of the set here are also from the original video. I suggest for the next one it be Word Crimes. He references Prince briefly in that one.😅
The video is even more amazing when you realize that Weird Al got some of the same performers from the original Nirvana video to appear as their original characters.
When we were all in lock down during Covid, Weird Al released a video of himself performing, Germs. I'd love to see you react to one of his original songs as well as him in concert. I've seen him in concert many times and he is incredible.
A Little fun fact about this was when Al asked Kurt if he could do a parody apparently Kurt was like "It isn't about food, is it?" Al was like no and so Kurt was like, sure okay fine :3
Back in the late 50's there was an accordion player named Frankie Yankovich. I remember from my grade school days a funny song by him called I Yest Go Nuts At Christmas. I may have spelled his name wrong, but Weird Al started out doing these parodies also using that instrument. They were not related. Great fun mates!
When he performs this song live and gets to the "I forgot the next verse" line he stops singing and the audience sings the rest of the lines to the next chorus.
I've seen so many Weird "Al" 9:09 he said that he approached Kurt about doing a parody. Kurt asked him what it was going to be about, Al told him that he was going with the theme of no one being able to understand him, and Kurt laughed. I grew up in the Seattle area during the grunge era. My sister and I were stealing dad's flannels. Dad passed away last year, and my sister and I went through his closet, and we each took several of his current flannels. Miss you daddy.
RIP to your dad, both of my parents are gone. Sadly, my dad's taste in clothes was not really mine, I have never worn overalls. Yeah, all of you out there that still have them, call your mom, call your dad or better yet go see them today.
@bamachine what really gets the females I know, and I, is that the truly attractive flannels are only made for males and with good, thick, warm materials. The female versions are ugly, and you have to wear 3 to get the same thickness. Don't mind my rant. My DAD grumbled about it. He usually had pretty good taste. He also didn't dress like a dad when we were teens. He wore sneakers, teen t-shirts, jeans, and a leather jacket. He also didn't look his age. My poor sister was verbally attacked by a woman at a store who accused her of dating a man old enough to be her dad. Sister just looked at her and said he IS my dad. We laughed about that for years. Still do. And that was over 30 years ago. I am unable to call my mom, she's in a memory care facility and she doesn't remember me.
@@heidifruchtl354 Sorry to hear that about your mom. My dad had dementia during the last years of his life. It never got to the point where he did not remember us, just started doing odd and repetitive things before his kidneys completely failed. He made it to his late 80's though, my mom only made it to 70.
@bamachine I'm sorry for your losses. Dad had a massive heart attack 2 days after his 77th birthday. Mom was diagnosed with advanced alzheimer's and declined quickly. It's been about 18 months, but she remembers my sister, and that's it. She even forgot who dad was, with him right in front of her. And I think she only remembers my sister to threaten calling the cops on her. Long story, but one we chuckled over. Dad found it hilarious.
Congrats on getting his last name correct (after BP2 helped). This was great. The original cheerleaders in Teen Spirit were actually porn stars.. Little fun fact. Hope you keep doing him. He's so creative.
