Let’s talk about tooth decay and how to prevent cavities naturally.
Sugary food left on your teeth is food for bacteria that thrive on the sugar and make acids, leading to tooth decay.
According to the American Dental Association, to prevent tooth decay in children and adults, you need to:
• Brush twice a day
• Floss your teeth once a day
• See the dentist on a regular basis
• Limit snacking
• Consume a well-balanced diet
• Use fluoride and dental sealants (plastic coating)
• Keep added sugar to a minimum
What is a “balanced diet?” In many cases, this means including grains or starches in your diet. Diets that include sugar, grains, and starch can lead to cavities.
There is an enzyme in your mouth that helps break down starch and inhibits damaging acids from being produced. This enzyme is dependent on B vitamins, especially B1.
Sugar, carbs, and starches deplete vitamin B1. The more deficient you are in B1, the more you’re going to deplete the important enzyme that protects your teeth.
Other things, like bicarbonates, also help neutralize harmful acids in your mouth naturally.
In my opinion, to get rid of cavities, you need to address the underlying cause. You have to stop consuming sugar and starches.
The ketogenic diet has many benefits beyond weight loss, including promoting good oral health-and it’s great for adults and children!

Dentist here. I totally agree. No carbs = no cavities. It is also about the frequency of carbs/starches, not the total amount. So intermittent fasting is also fantastic for your teeth. It is harder to get cavities if you only eat once or twice a day
Thanks Geoff
So it’s carbs not the sugar??
@@XxMercuriiXx It's actually lifestyle because before you get to diet you have to address why are you snacking so much. Computer based work will keep a person snacking and if you have an addiction it goes even deeper.

Can you repair teeth? I have heard you can only make them more resilient but if you already have a cavity you can not reverse that, maybe if it is very small but even that is maybe hard and takes long time.

Ummm, dont feel guilt of having bad personal hygiene as you would be surprised to know that native people who have never seen a brush in their lives were having stronger teeth than any urban human during a study. It had to do alot with your diet while growing up- Blame candies, chocolates, fruit loops etc. 🙏
Well, I was born without teeth and am still without teeth.
@@Rrrrcc4666 I agree that candies, wheat products and chocolate are mostly to blame. I have noticed when I do not eat those my teeth enamel is much stronger and whiter probably because it makes your body acidic and bacteria can easily grow and does not contain any antibacterial properties like in many natural whole foods.

Yes okay but I just never brushed my teeth. I was a weird kid because I didn’t have much parental guidance. I used to scrape the white goo off my teeth with my fingernails then eat it! 🤮
That was then, now, I brush twice a day sometimes three times a day. But lately, I can’t find a dentist that doesn’t lie, over charge or literally abuse me!
@@CuteThingslikesame im trying my best with cutting down on those things and i dont take white sugar anymore. Next thing is im gna reduce those snacks even more its hard because im addicted a bit.
HAVE TO SHARE! I have not been to the dentist in a very VERY long time (20+ years). Im self employed & don’t have dental insurance. I take really good care of my teeth because of that. I floss nearly every day, brush in the am & pm and oil pull about 1x a week. I also make my own toothpaste and alternate with a coconut oil toothpaste as well because my mouth doesn’t react well to Colgate or crest (it peels away a layer of skin and leaves an off taste in my mouth) My mom has a problem with plaque and my dad had gum issues.
I just went to the dentist 2 days ago and the doctor told me my oral health was awesome! He couldn’t believe I hadn’t been to a dentist in that long. The true test was when I got to the hygienist for my scheduled cleaning. She didn’t have to do anything! She said I had no plaque, no tarter or biofilm. I wanted to cry, I was so happy. She told me I had a mouth hygienists love to get!
For those that are curious, this is the toothpaste I make. I use a couple tablespoons of bentonite clay, a sprinkle of baking soda, couple drops of peppermint oil and cinnamon oil, 1 tsp xylitol, drizzle some liquid coconut oil and water to make a nice paste. Store it in a glass jar.
Isn’t the baking soda too abrasive?
Effective and fluoride free? Sounds like the best of both worlds.
Curious if you had any older fillings? If so, did they just not have issues for 20 years?? Do you know if oil pulling actually removes and fills old fillings overtime?

If your dental infection or decay is caused by parasite overload (too much sugar) ivermectin also helps.
It is not only what you eat but also how you cook/prep it !
Example - If you use herbs & spices like garlic, clove, oregano, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, thyme etc in your recepies, you'll reap the benefits of their strong yet natural antimicrobial effects which keep bacteria/yeast/parasites in check.
You still need to keep your simple carbs, refined sugars & starches on the lower side to sustain dental health.
Having reasonable amount of lean proteins will also help build the dental collagen structure.
You could also supplement with B vitamins, Essential aminos, Trace minerals and electrolytes (potassium, magnesium) for additional support.
Example: Your teeth love sulfur based aminos like taurine, methionine, cysteine (fights tooth decay and rebuild)...and minerals like zinc (strengthens dental structure) , manganese, boron (prevents calcium and magesium loss), and molybdenum (repairs tooth enamel).
I've a lot of cavities due to drug use in my past. I'm definitely up for fixing them and preventing anymore damage. Thank you for this Doc!

Another Dentist here , It’s not from the drugs. It’s from the carbs.
Drugs dry your mouth out, so if you eat or drink anything with carbs the effect from carbs is multiplied.

I went to the dentist several years ago and was told I had seven cavities, mostly small. I refused treatment, opting to eat better, brush, floss, and use baking powder instead of toothpaste. I also ate aged cheese before sleeping and observed what archeologists/anthropologists said about ancient people's teeth and diet. Notice those skulls and how beautiful the teeth are.
Loads of fiber, raw veggies, fresh food, food that scrubs the teeth, etc. was part of their diets. My next check up, years later, revealed no cavities.
Thank you for this, I want to try this, I am in my late 30s and was told a week ago I have a small cavity

Am almost 60 and haven’t had a cavity for 30 years, I have learned a lot how to care for my teeth over the years and thankful for dental check ups. Thank you for explaining about bacteria not only in the mouth but in the intestines. You have an excellent explanation simple and very helpful. One thing is when going for dental check up ask the hygienist what to pay more attention to, they are wonderful but I have noticed they won’t go into much detail if we are missing an area when we brush or floss.
What you do?
Waw youre damn lucky
I graduated dental hygiene school this year and have been working for about 6 months now. I see at least 16 different patients every day. I’ve learned that one of the most common habits of people who have a ton of cavities is drinking soda. When I notice the patient has rampant decay, I’ll ask them if they drink a lot of soft drinks or energy drinks and 99% of the time they say yes and seem surprised that I can tell that. The carbonation and sugar are the most volatile combination for our teeth.
Please research fluoride. It was used as a rat poison, harms the pineal gland and is used as a tool to dumb down the masses. I have stayed away from commercial toothpaste and have switched to P2 probiotic toothpaste mouthwash that inhibits the biofilm from forming in the first place. Never had a cleaner teeth than ever!
Cola will dissolve a back molar in about 4 days if it is left immersed in a glass of Cola.

I used to get cavities a lot when I was 9 years old and during teen years. Mostly it happened within two teeth where I couldn't floss as they were very tight (30 years ago we didn't have right tools to floss). Also, my diet of what my mom was preparing beside vegetables, was mostly carbs as she thought we can get full with bread, pasta, rice et, not thinking about the lack of nutritional values. When I was indipendent I never got cavities as I was controlling myself what I was eating (I am into veggies and fruits, no carbs, sugar, soda drinks etc). Little note about starches. If you love potatoes (like me) when you cook them, let them cool, then heat them again later (to eat) the bio-availability of the bad starches become drastically reduced. You can rinse them in cold water as well to remove surface starches. Also, chilled potatoes decrease postprandial glucose, insulin, and glucose-dependent insulinotropic Peptide.
(yes I did indeed copy and paste that last sentence) : )
We eat now sweet potatoes and yams. It doesn't have bad starches. :)
when I was on keto diet a year ago I was doing lots of research and found out the same thing. Cooling potatoes after cooking them reduces their gylcemic index quite a bit.
I have read this about rice also. Cooling and then reheating reduces the bad starches.
Agree. The cooling technique drastically increases resistant starch percentage. I first observed eating cold potatoes when my Korean friend offered me cold, steamed potatoes at lunch. Since that day, I eat them dipped in mustard. Yum!
@@Carol-wq9fr I eat cold rice sometimes for breakfast. It sticks with you. I am not hungry again for hours.
Again, I can attest to this. For years and years and years, no matter how much I brushed or flossed, no matter what I did, I could not stop from getting cavities. My dentist administered fluoride when I was a kid every six months, a giant tray of fluoride in my mouth, I can remember just how sick it made me feel and it was all I could do not to throw up with that tray of my mouth for 10 minutes. For hours afterward, I would still feel sick. They said it would harden and strengthen my teeth. 👀 Well, by early 20s. 20s I had had a tremendous amount of cavities, multiple fillings, yes, Mercury feelings, and my dad would constantly ask me. Did you brush your teeth? Enough times? You can't be brushing your teeth enough. That's got to be the problem. Well I can tell you was brushing my teeth three and four times a day, flossing, brushing my teeth immediately after eating anything, and nothing I did helped. Cavities continued. At one point in a six month period I had nine new cavities. Well for years ongoing I had fought to try and keep my teeth. In the last two years, my health had taken a giant crash due to life circumstances and some very bad diet choices. All of my teeth were loosening, my gums were sore continuously and bleeding and a whole host of other physical issues including fatigue, loss of mental focus, etc etc. Etc. I came across Dr. Berg's video on teeth, vitamin c, b vitamins etc. I decided I would switch to keto, drop sugar and thoroughly, stop taking ascorbic acid vitamin c, and start eating vitamin c in the form of whole foods. Peppers, sauerkraut, lemons, etc. Well in about a month my oral health turned around 100%. One of the teeth I had that was super loose and had been bothering me for over a year. Finally came out. When it came out. I looked at it and I could see it was about 60% Mercury filling. I realized my body had just rejected this tooth because it was loaded with toxins. Since that came out and I have maintained my keto diet and healthy eating, no more cavities, no more bleeding gums, no more fatigue, no more loss of mental clarity, and on down the list. What Dr. Berg is talking about here is exactly spot on. Also, it is true that the sugar industry tried to make fat the demon. The demon is not fat, the demon is sugar, refined carbs, the starches, and of course big corporations. 😁 I could go on and on and on about all this, but I wanted to make the point that Dr. Berg's information is definitely spot on accurate. If you're having tooth problems, cavities, weight gain, lack of mental focus, on down the list, adopt the keto diet, just try it for 30 days. Drop sugar and switch to healthy eating. You will be truly amazed. I feel about 20 years younger in about 3 months. Thank you so much Dr. Berg from the bottom of my heart for helping me get my health back! ♥️ I should also briefly mention that cod liver oil and vitamin A in the form of retinol were important pieces of this recovery as well.
Wow, that's crazy tjat you did so much yet still had cavities. I think genetics which give some ppl tougher enema that others and bacterial flora in the mouth varies a lot person to person, and so some do not experience many problems despite the high sugar and carbs, however, eventually, that enamal will wear down, and they wont have that protection any more. Keto works, I dont feel the bacteral film on my teeth anymore, at least way less, and I suspect the makeup of these bacteria changes too, if theyre not getting the sugars to ferment!
Happy to hear Keto has resolved those issues. What was your diet like growing up?
so what happened with the mercury filling that came out...that tooth is now just a hole?
My husband got all of his mercury fillings taken out and replaced. It's a process. He downloaded a book for free, but I can't remember the name of it. He had to take detoxing supplements as part of it.

Two things that really stood out for me, were that Cancer feeds from fermentation, and that enamel is harder than steel, definitely blew my mind; great insight in connecting the points.
The truth is that cancer likes glucose because it's an easy energy source, but cancer can use any energy source that's available. A no carb diet, for example, will not starve cancer.
Is enamel really harder than steel? But the bacteria can still easily destroy your teeth if you are not careful every day. I think cancer can grow if your body is unhealthy.

Top 6 Cavity makers : Vinegar left on teeth , white sugar , pepsin(pork stomach acid) , x-rays , salicylic acid , excessive fluoride in drinking water .
I can vouch for sugars causing cavity cuz I used to suck on candies before bed and sometimes fall asleep while the candy is still in my mouth.
just 1-2 months of this bad habit resulted in HUGE cavities in the molars
So, here are my tips -
1. brush before bed even if just for 10-20 seconds. (in addition to the regular morning brush)
2. chew your water ALWAYS. this would clean your mouth through out the day
3. reduce sugars but not go all out on keto. (Dr.Berg looks a lot older than he is because of keto and he has to use filters to hide his wrinkles in the videos)

I'll share my own experience. Up to when I was 26 years old I used to have new cavities every now and then. I brushed a lot, flossed daily, used mouth wash, all good practices, except I didn't go to the dentist regurlarly for cleanings. One dentist told me my problem was that I simply was genetically more prone to cavities. Then finally I found a new dentist that filled my last cavities and told me the most important was to get regular cleanings every semester, and that even though I brushed daily, it would not stop tartar from building up, and under that tartar, the cavities would grow. Now, for over 4 years I have been going to the same dentist to get cleanings and since that I haven't gotten any new cavities at all. My habits have changed to brushing my teeth only before bed with weekly flossings, even though the dentist recomends at least 2 brushes a day. Since I'm lazy, and it's working, I'll keep brushing once. It's what works for me.
Brushing once a day isn't enough to prevent unpleasant breath. It's kind of creeping that an adult wouldn't brush his teeth more than once a day yikes
@@Arielle1309 I have noticed that most people do not wash their tounges, are they blind tongues have plaque if unwashed, plaque on tongue causes bad breath also.
Do you drink enough water daily?
It's probably bc of your toothbrush. You need an electric one to prevent buildup and to massage the gums properly. Use it in the morning and before bed. Either Oral B or Sonicare. You also need to floss at night. Toothpaste with fluoride in it helps prevent formation of cavities.

One thing I would add is that you need to make sure you get enough vitamins and minerals, as a lack of them affect your teeth health. When I had vitamin and mineral deficiencies, I had cavity issues. Once I changed that and got enough vitamins and minerals, I have never had teeth pain or cavity issues for the past 15 years.
What type of vitamins and minerals did you get ? In what type of food ?
@@sylviagourmaud8748 Eat plenty fruits and vegetables and grass fed beef. You will need to supplement as today you can't get all of your vitamins and minerals solely from your food for a variety of reasons. It just is not possible to do so. You need about 60 minerals and 16 vitamins each day. There are more vitamins and minerals and less sugar in green leafy vegetables than in fruits.
Vitamin k2 is key
I am now 61,& when I was 18 yo, I learned to always always rinse my mouth w water straight after I eat or drink anything…& have hardly had any fillings ever since
Your video came at the right time! I had a tooth extracted 3 days ago
Thank brother for this info😎😎
Always enjoying your content. I do wonder IF fluoride is really good for us though, been using fluoride free toothpaste for the longest time. Thank you as always Dr. Berg. I would also like to hear your take on Root Canals.
Fluoride is an herbicide and does not belong in your mouth! It also calcified your pineal gland.
No fluoride is a waste product and is not good for oral health because it goes directly to blood stream in our body, please do research it!
I would also like to know what Dr Berg thinks of root canals?! I'm going to a new dentist tomorrow and I have a feeling that is going to be the outcome of my one tooth I've been struggling with for a while.....
Fluoride is bad for your teeth and terrible for your body.
Fluoride is a neurotoxin by-product of toxic waste No Florida's not good for you in any sense don't listen to anybody that says it is good for you because they're being paid like the rest of the shills to mislead and cause more harm
Thank you Dr Berg, we were raised on a sugar and carbs diet, my teeth are a testament to that (a mess). The fundamental reason I started keto was toothache from eating sugar. The keto plan has been so successful for me, no more aching teeth, and also in so many other ways as well 🙏
Have your teeth improved at all?
@@spoolsandbobbins every facet of my health has improved since starting keto and IF.
@@janine6267 What do you eat every day?
سلام آقای دکتر .واقعا عالیه..ممنون وسپاسگزارم..ای کاش ترجمه فارسی هم داشت کاملتر مطالب رو متوجه میشدم.
Thank so much for this I always only think of sugar as the cause and nothing more but you showed what else can cause it and how to prevent it.
All five of my children got sealants and at age 24 plus, only one of them had 1 cavity. Highly recommend and most insurance companies cover it.
As a child in the 50's & 60's, sugar in many forms was fed to my siblings & I daily. Deserts of some kind were held out as a reward for eating your dinner. As the oldest of 7 kids, Mom had to find a way to feed us all with the least expense. Oatmeal at least 3 times a week with brown sugar. Boxed cereals with lots of sugar. My Dad would cover his grapefruit with white sugar, I told him later it tasted just fine without the sugar. Didn't matter. My Mother's dad was a dentist. I don't recall him telling us to stop the sugar. He did tell us to brush our teeth of course, but we never flossed. I think my Dad had 4 of his own teeth left at the end of his life. Mom is still alive and she is missing many teeth so uses a dental bridge. Pasta was a staple, fill the kids up the cheapest way possible. Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you so much Dr.Berg for this wonderful information. What you said about sugars is very true .my grandma is 97 and she has very healthy teeth even at this age.(my great grandma who passed away at 103 had all teeth in good condition)
I have weird problem , I use Dabur Red paste which has clove oil and other ayurvedic ingredients if I ever switch to any other toothpaste my teeth sensitivity comes back ...
Apart from cutting the sugar and starches what kind of toothpaste would you recommend Dr Berg?
Much love man ❤
Just went to the dentist a few hours ago and he was very impressed, as he has been for many years. I rarely eat starches or sweets, so that explains it.
This is so fascinating to me, i spent a couple years without going to a dentist and when i went they said my teeth seemd great even though i hadn't gone in like 3 or 4 years and they asked about my diet, and i've been having very little to no sweets and low carb for a long time and they said just low on sweets doesnt add up to no dental health problems and the werent so sure why, well this explains it!
Thanks for your advice
You're very welcome
damn i wish i had this explained this well in depth 20 years ago.
thank you from the bottom of my heart this will help 10s of thousands or more even
Chewing cloves helps a great deal.
Also, rinse your mouth with water after eating.
The right water! Not parasitic water :) Diet still huge -- can't just expect to eliminate everything with a rinse :)
@@Jennifer-gr7hn agreed. Although I no longer live in parts of the world where that is a problem.
I returned home to a country that drugs its people with fluoride. Countries that have parasites in the water usually have more intelligent people because they have a diet that eliminates parasites. They have food that requires chewing so their teeth are straight and jaws are strong, so look vastly younger than my western citizenry.
I drink single source mineral water not controlled by Nestle or Coca-Cola.
Living with traditional people educated me to see what real strength and health is.

My brother went to the dentist, they found some cavities and scheduled an appt about a month later to put in fillings. A few days after the visit though, he found out about the bad effects of food additives and decided to completely change his diet to basically just raw vegan foods. After a month of eating a completely different diet (before he was a dorito, soda, and hot pocket addict) he goes in to get his fillings and the dentist can't find them. He even did new x-rays and it showed the cavities were gone. His dentist said it was the first time he'd ever seen that happen.
Years later I was working at a dental technician place and was looking up dental research. And a recent study found that the teeth CAN grow back enamel under the right circumstances, but if the dentin underneath becomes too damaged, then the enamel cannot grow back. Not that the enamel is alive but rather the dentin produces the enamel.
Good job Doc❤✌🏻

Thanks Dr. Eric Berg For All Your Informative Videos.
You're very welcome!
I started doing intermittent fasting and greatly reduced sugar and carbs to lose weight, which has worked for the most part. Another positive effect has been my teeth have never been better. I didn't make the connection until I went to the dentist for my cleaning yesterday!
*_A lot of dentists don't want us to use baking soda on our teeth, but I've been using baking soda for more than 10 years and I haven't had any cavity since. It's simply because it neutralizes the acid in your mouth that also causes cavities._*
Good for you. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Not me takes off the enamel .......... lots of cavities
Using baking soda will turn your hair gray.
Thank you so much
Do u brush ur teeth only with baking soda? Or u mix it with toothpaste?
Thanks so much Dr Berg
Thank you Dr Berg, for your continued exposure of sugar....there's a book, probably out of print now, called Sugar Blues...opened my eyes to the history and ill effects of sugar on both our bodies and society.
Yes , true sugar is definitely enemy of our body . But fluoride is by far worse enemy !
Weston Price was primarily interested in Activator X because of its ability to control dental caries. By studying the remains of human skeletons from past eras, he estimated that there had been more dental caries in the preceding hundred years than there had been in any previous thousand-year period and suggested that Activator X was a key substance that people of the past obtained but that modern nutrition did not adequately provide. Price used the combination of high-vitamin cod liver oil and high-Activator X butter oil as the cornerstone of his protocol for reversing dental caries. This protocol not only stopped the progression of tooth decay, but completely reversed it without the need for oral surgery by causing the dentin to grow and remineralize, sealing what were once active caries with a glassy finish. One 14-year-old girl completely healed 42 open cavities in 24 teeth by taking capsules of the high-vitamin cod liver oil and Activator X concentrate three times a day for seven months.

Dr. Berg, I would LOVE to give this information to my grandchildren, but it is a little too advanced for them. Have you ever thought of making a video for kids? This info is great for adults! My grandkids live on sugar! If they understood why it is bad for their health/teeth, maybe they'd back off a bit. Thank you!
My kids do not eat sweets unless I purchase them. Just be firm. When my daughter asked for gummies I offered two types of her favourite fruits instead. She was fine and got my point. She is 9.
Iam not using fluoride tooth paste for maybe 20 years and I do not have any cavity. I was told that brushing is more importatnt than expensice toothpaste. It just smell nice. But it is mostly the side efect.
In a matter of 9 months every single tooth of mine had cavities, and I was so confused because my intake of sugar hadn’t changed. Then I realised after tests that I have gut issues and I was severely deficient in Zinc, Mag, and B vitamins (all vitamins and minerals really, but esp these ones). I wish I had found out sooner
Hi there, just curious... what's your blood type?
Do you mind sharing what you did to improve gut health and if that helped your cavities?
Thank you for this!
There's not enough information around concerning the natural care of teeth and gums.
Also, beware of dentists who call themselves holistic, they usually aren't.
Another great video Dr Berg, thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it! Always happy to share valuable content.
Yup, I brush with *baking soda* added to my toothpaste after I eat & that was a game changer for me. Gargle with *peroxide* too - gets rid of acid. *BOTH* whiten teeth as well. I have a much healthier mouth now, no more grinding teeth at night either which was because of too much acid in my mouth. The underlying issue - intestinal candida from taking antibiotics. But the *two* things I started doing resolved all mouth issues.
Thank you very much, Dr. Berg!
You're most welcome!
It is very interesting, I had the same problem with cavities. Once I reduced the suggary foods, the problem was resolved.
Hello dr Eric which vitamin D is good there is a lot of vitamin please thank you
Very helpful
Thanks again
Luv ur channel ❤️👍🏽
Most welcome! Glad you enjoy it!
Dr. Berg I thought you have said in other videos that many people are too alkaline and that you are better off being slightly acidic. Also, I don't use fluoride toothpastes because the fluoride in toothpaste is a dangerous chemical and it causes fluoridosis. I do use natural toothpastes with baking soda. I also avoid glycerin in toothpastes because I heard it binds acids to your tooth enamel. Anything on that?
Sugar is a drug in that after you've consumed it for a while it's hard as hell to stop
It's also harder when you buy it and have so much of it in my household.
Yes. Dr Berg made a few videos to help stop sugar cravings ❤
Looking good mane
Dr. Berg - we know sugar is bad but is there some correlation to the added yeasts in food causing these problems as well?
I can’t tolerate gluten or yeast.
So grateful for all that you’ve shared over my past 8+ years as a subscriber. I really wish I knew about all of this when I was younger!! @@samuelmurphy8692 they actually do. I think a lot of it has to do with how I raised them. They’ve always been able to talk openly to me about anything without the fear of being judged, something I didn’t have in my upbringing which is why it was so important to me to make sure that they did. That openness established a dynamic of understanding, respect and trust between us that has remained intact their entire lives. Now that’s not to say I haven’t been tried because I have but when the dust settles I don’t take the “I told you so” approach. I try to handle everything with understanding. Hi Dr. Berg, can you make a video about white spots in teeth? Thank you.
Brush before going to sleep (at night the ph in the mouth lowers and this is critical for the enamel) + don't rinse the toothpaste and use small ammount of toothpaste so it doesn't leave too much residue on your teeth and gums.
