- Pixar has become a lot more divisive in recent years. Despite many of their films still being solid, many feel there's something missing from their current releases that their critically acclaimed classics had in spades. Today I want to highlight the current problems with Pixar and why they're a detriment to their current (still enjoyable) films.

Judging from the video, you REALLY don't like Cars 3, huh? It's a shame that you didn't elaborate on why you feel that way.
It's weird because DreamWorks last year created two films: The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots The Last Wish that destroyed both Disney and Pixar, I swear it's like the 2000s again

Dreamworks is on fire and i’m really happy with that. It’s like they make animated movies that Disney won’t. I hope Kung Fu Panda 4 is epic.

In the 2000s, Pixar were at their best, while DreamWorks also had some great movies of their own, albeit a bit hit and miss. Now I believe DreamWorks has the capacity to do better in recent memory.
I love how everyone agrees Toy Story 3 should’ve been the last Toy Story movie.
I don't agree with that. That film was more about Andy's toys coming to terms with their fate and Woody being kind enough to give them a second life, Toy Story 4 was Buzz giving another one back to Woody as a thank you, by encouraging him to do the deed with Bo Peep and her friends.
Because that is how it should have been? TS4 felt unnecessary but you can maybe argue it was a epilogue, but I have no hopes for TS5 after the mid TS4 and the disappointing Lightyear

We could’ve gotten a special about Woody’s ending but Toy Story 4 isn’t unneeded, but it’s certainly not needed.
The main issue I've been having with Pixar (and Disney tbh) lately is that the plots are messy. Like really messy. Pixar used to be known for having the best scripts, tightest pacing, a perfect balance of humor & sincere moments of honest reflection from their characters. Now it feels like they are struggling to nail down the exact story they want to tell. The finess is gone.

In terms of the sequels or the original films? Honestly, for the most part, I still think they’ve been delivering on the latter. The sequels are where they tend to be hit-or-miss.
I think this issue started when Disney bought Pixar. That's the only explanation I have.

I have my issues with Toy Story 4, but my biggest issue is easily the fact that they lobotomised Buzz

It wasn’t until 2019 (m.ua-cam.com/video/d5ngi3Qc-GY/v-deo.html, m.ua-cam.com/video/U__oaZ9FiXM/v-deo.html, m.ua-cam.com/video/rlKvQxtlrQ8/v-deo.html) when what used to be one of Pixar’s best franchises alongside Finding Nemo (which it still is because for 7 years so far, the last thing they made in the FN franchise was Finding Dory) and Cars (but then came the weakest instalment of a formerly good series since Cars 2. m.ua-cam.com/video/I2uykmqKBhw/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/brnIypkBnCw/v-deo.html) was given the shaft by Josh Crueley, Dingus McLane, Brian “Fee” Lasseter (and to think he was the same guy that gave us Cars 3) and Steve Purhell (yeah, I got their names mixed up for the LULZ, but at the same time, it’s because of people like these that make Pixar a shell of its former self (although even to this day, there are also times when they can make more masterpieces like in the 2000s, from Onward to Soul to Luca to Turning Red in the very early 2020s)!

I loved that mention of if Toy Story 5 turned Woody into a serial killer!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂 (although in all seriousness, I don’t think even Pixar would come to that. Nickelodeon? Maybe. Disney in general? Again, maybe. But Pixar? For all its misses (and hits)? Unlikely.)

Both complete creative freedom but also just higher standards too. I mean don’t get me wrong it’s not like they can’t make good movies but the last real hitter I remember from them is Coco. Almost everything since the 2010s has been forgettable or worse with a few small bright spots.

@@el_mr6439 True, Disney and Pixar kind of blend together lately because of the ownership and frankly, their styles have kind of meshed together but the point stands. I guess you can replace Wreck it Ralph with Coco then but either way, they simultaneously need more freedom but also more quality control.

I'm fine if Pixar decide to never make a Spider-verse clone with the visuals. When more than one studio uses the same art style, it's not special anymore. It'll feel like a "style over substance" gimmick. Pixar's films are visually diverse from each others, they don't need Spider-verse's art style in it.
Well it's more of a comic book looking style rather than a cartoon.

@@0deadx21You don't have to use the exact same art style to do the same things. Just look at Arcane, The Mitchells vs the Machines, or Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. That being said, I think Pixar has a specific style it would be weird to deviate from.
“Luca” felt more like what Pixar is known for, and it honestly feels like it handles the idea of growing up better than certain movies.
I liked the movie, but I could barely even tell it had a message other than “Be Yourself.” Which is the most stereotypical message, which can probably be incorporated into any piece of media.

@@TJ-hg6op I don’t like getting over analytical and explaining myself with a 500 word essay, but this is essentially growing up like becoming independent and maturing. He goes from following his mother’s orders and doing what she says to making mistakes, suffering their consequences, and repairing relationships. He chases after a thrill without considering consequences, and pays the price later, then instead of taking the easy path and crawling back to his mother hoping she would take him back, he owns up to his actions and sacrifices his own needs for the sake of his friends. Like in practice the act of going to school is a good thing, but it’s more about how he did it, again by betraying trusts in a pursuit of the adventure, but by acting selflessly and making sacrifices he earns it. But at the end of the day who cares, it was a good movie.

Brave - a story that Pixar spent more time making the main character’s hair just right than exploring her supposed expert skill (archery)

Thank you for acknowledging that Coco doesn’t fall into this trend. You could objectively put that movie at the top alongside Monster’s Inc or Toy Story 2 or Ratatouille for how creative, heartfelt, and perfect it is.
Coco is better than all of those films.

It's ironic how Dreamworks, a company created because its creator hated Disney, has been pumping out films that rival Disney and Pixar.
Nowadays when I see a Pixar movie I just marvel at the settings and the details than the actual movie.
Encanto is the only movie in recent memory from the company where I enjoyed it.
the creator at DreamWorks saw the writing on the wall decades ago. pixar's creativity has been strangled out of them by the house of mouse and it shows, very paint by numbers movies and visuals with scripts that are very basic and boring.

I feel like this can all apply to Disney’s animated movies as well. Hell everything at this point. They’ve been playing it extremely safe and doing the bare minimum. Making products that are easy money rather than innovate

Deceptive because it can be easily misinterpreted as "anyone can do anything" (the "if you can dream it you can do it" message that plagues the morale of many stories) but as Hugo explained in the end, it actually means "Not everyone is capable of everything, but for something that requires talent, you can never know where this talent comes from; so you need to get rid of preconceptions and be open-minded"
Allot of no talent people are getting famous now a days thus the saying "You can do anything you set your mind to" is true.
For me, the Toy Story 1-3 trilogy is like the perfect 3 course meal, where you're perfectly satisfied, everything complimented each other and you're just leaving the restaurant, until the waiter suddenly slaps down a leftover portion of his nan's cheese and onion quiche on your table. That's quiche is Toy Story 4.
And guess what. Now they’re making a 5th one.

Dreamworks usually makes sequels because they have new stories to tell in the same universe.

You’re literally talking about the studio that released Shrek the Third, Boss Baby 2, and Trolls 2. All of which range from bad to mediocre. Dreamworks pumps out plenty of bad sequel films to turn a profit just like literally every other major 3D animation studio.
I’ll agree that Dreamworks is generally better at handling sequels than Disney/Pixar (HTTYD 2&3, Kung Fu Panda 2&3, Shrek 2, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) but they still have their fair share of cash cow sequels.

@@waffleconehat Dreamworks has put out more good sequels bad because their stories can be continued. The movie feels complete, but you still wish to see more adventures. Modern Disney's stories rarely warrant sequels, that's why they are bad. You don't really know where else these characters could be taken. In films that had potential for sequels, Incredibles, Frozen, Wreck it Ralph, but they fall victim to self-awareness humor, faux-progressivism, and repeating beats from the original films to recapture what made them work.
IMO the biggest sin toy story 4 committed was selling a toy of “Forky” because it’s supposed to be a toy a kid made themselves out of a fork (who woulda guessed) in arts and craft time in school. That kind of defeats the whole purpose selling it pre made XD

That's well and good, the problem is Toy Story 4 destroyed established characters that have already gone through their arcs. Woody doesn't care about being a favorite toy he only wants his kid to be happy, Buzz doesn't believe himself to be a real space ranger, Jesse allowed herself to be loved again by a kid despite her fears and phobias, Woody came to terms with his mortality and wants to be there for his kid despite knowing he could break, Andy was able to let go of his childhood so that he could become an adult and all the toys basically got the lesson Woody and Buzz got in the first two movies. Loss, growing up, letting go, mortality, family, friendship, jealousy... The first three movies had it all only for it to be undone in 4. There are no good values in 4. The main antagonist bullies her way to a happy ending and never gets a comeuppance like in the previous 3 films, and Woody simps for a really abusive love interest. 4 didn't have to exist. Cars wasn't a masterpiece but it was still a solid movie. Monsters University wasn't a masterpiece and it was alright. I think even Monsters Inc wasn't a masterpiece and it was still good.

The more bad movies Pixar puts out the better the classics look in comparison.
To be fair to Monsters University, while I'm not a fan I do think it has a great message and something new to say, namely 'sometimes you can't achieve your dreams, but that's ok' and to a lesser extent 'University / college isn't necessary to do well in life'. Both messages are rare to see in family films.
Monster University’s theme rivals movies like Ratatouille and Inside Out. I’ll even throw a bone and say Cars 3 isn’t too far behind. The issue comes from most of Monster University isn’t about the theme, and Cars 3 treats their theme like a running gag half the time.
I love the film for its message. As a teacher, I know most students will never achieve their dreams just because life is hard, and that's ok. We see so many movies in which the blind triple-amputee twelve year old manages to hit the game winning home run. That's no real. It feels good, but it tends to be a lie. The idea that you can still find alternative paths to happiness is an important message.
I don't understand in what world that's a good message. It's just cope.

I feel annoyed that they keep making it seem like each "Toy Story" film is the grande finale of the franchise and then the next one is announced. It almost feels manipulative.
Toy Story 3: "Yes, here's the ending shot of a sky that looks like Andy's cloud wallpaper, symbolizing the end of the toys' last chapter with Andy."
*9 years later*
Toy Story 4: "Buzz and Woody say good bye to each other thus ending the chapter of their story."
*4 years later*
Pixar: "We promise Toy Story 5 is worthy of its existence!"

Toy Story 3 was supposed to be the end of things. The final part of a toy's journey is getting thrown out and ending up in a junkyard or landfill. The junkyard was deliberately put into Toy Story 3 for that very reason. It was supposed to have a sense of finality, and it was a grand spectacle. It was outright stated in the director's commentary.
Then Toy Story 4 crops up almost a decade later and wrecks shop. The film is a complete and utter mess, and the director's commentary confirms this.
Square Enix did that with the Tómb Raider reboot trilogy.
They said before each game: "this is where Lara Croft turns into the Tomb Raider"
Problem is, who will be the main focus for Toy Story 5? Woody or Buzz, or a completely new cast of characters?
@@X2011racer Either they'll follow Woody and Bo Peep's adventures as lost toys or they'll focus on Bonnie's toys.
I don't think the issue is Pixars visual style, its the quality of their stories that have gone down hill. Changing the visuals might give us a sense of awe and wonder but Puss and Boots The Last Wish, Spider-verse and Arcane have amazing visuals AND great stories.
Look I don't think you're wrong about the stories, but I can guarantee that the unique visual style elevates the quality of those movies by an extreme amount.
That scene in spider verse where miles makes "the leap of faith" just will not work as well in a standard 3d animated environment.
I'm a big anime fan. I cannot even begin to explain how animation is EXTREMELY UNDERUTILIZED in action scenes. In puss in boots, they lean heavily on their mixed usage of 2d and 3d animation in action scenes. It works really well.
Why are we pitting all these great things against one another? I love them all.
I will always resent how the first half of Soul was so amazing and then devolved into borderline Illumination levels of humour
I believe Pixar and Disney can pull off what Spiderverse did but are creatively stifled due to the corporate part of Disney. At times it feels like Pixar has grown fearful of the company and tries to keep em in their good graces
Yeah! I have that same gut feeling too when ever I watch their modern movies. Like something tells me their movies could be spectacular, but something is limiting them. It’s kind of like the current MCU movies right now.
Disney is getting too involved into products and marketing that it has spilled into the creative process of the movies "This won't be marketable!" "The market tends to not like these ideas" "green is not a creative colour" they are not a big studio anymore, for 3 decades now they are a multibillion COMPANY, and they are a company at first, a brand at second, a theme park at third, and a studio at fourth.

Pixar used to discard any ideas that weren't creative enough. If a project had a creative idea but wasn't interesting enough, then Pixar would bring in a veteran to take over and whip things into shape. They weren't afraid to overhaul or scrap projects entirely if things weren't coming together. Pixar might actually be a case where more creative control is a bad thing.
Yknow I really like spider verse style but I don’t want every studio to suddenly animate only in that style, because then we would have a problem again: everything would look the same
The problem with recent Pixar/Disney movies(at least for me) is that they are so focused on the message itself, rather than telling a fun, interesting, heartwarming story. It feels like they are preaching "the important lesson" to the audience...
It wouldn't be that much of a problem if the message itself wasn't almost always about loving your family, the same message just gets boring after awhile.

I've only seen a couple of their films suffer from this (namely Raya, Frozen 2, and Lightyear). The rest I thought were pretty enjoyable.
@Kait0w0 He's just setting an example. The lessons, even though useful, and generic are commonly used. Soul to me is an exception since its talking about valuing the little things in life (which not many do). However, turning read has the same "Be yourself" lesson that wears out with each movie that uses it.
@@Stickamajig i don’t think that’s the exact theme of “Turning Red”. The moral of the movie was more like learning to embrace all the weird things that come with being yourself and not feeling ashamed of it, especially by your own family. That’s pretty different from most other films where instead of the protagonist learning the lesson of acceptance, it’s society itself.
Personally, I really like Monsters University. For a post-Cars 2 prequel, it’s actually really enjoyable and heartfelt. I don’t feel like it undid anything from the original movie, if anything it added more to Mike and Sully’s friendship.
I loved the Mitchell’s VS The Machines on so many levels. But the one that comes to mind after watching this video is the art style. It incorporated a hand-drawn look into the animation, so that if you looked closely you could see pencil lines and brush strokes on the characters. Of course it was CG, but it was convincing and served as a constant reminder that you were looking at a piece of art.
It also used what I would call “slapstick animation”, where characters and objects morphed and stretched for comedic effect and sometimes pulled impossible facial expressions. I’ve definitely been missing that type of animation in the past 15 years.
I really do genuinely believe Pixar WANTS to do new and creative things.
But the hungry corporate bigwigs running Disney just wants them to do the same series over and over again

@@amyvasquez4268 on the contrary, Disney are so obsessed with their image that they put every one of their compagnies in to a very very very tight strict little box. remember what Alex Hirsh had to endure just to be able to finish Gravity Falls?? Yeah, exactly. So I'm not surprised Pixar is "playing it safe", Disney has them by the cherries. especially since Pixar is like, one of the most well-known acquisitions of Disney, therefore considered somewhat of an "extension" of their own animation studio.
Mike and Sully have turned Monsters, Inc. into a place that brings laughter to children instead of fear.
Dory has reunited with her parents and they’re living with Nemo and Marlin as one big family.
Lightning McQueen has chosen to pass the torch to Cruz and step into Doc Hudson’s role as a mentor.
The Incredibles are finally able to come out of hiding and be heroes once again.
Woody has accepted that Bonnie will be okay without him and discovered a new purpose in helping other toys find owners.
These are all great stories, but they are over. It’s time for Pixar to move on.

I like to headcanon that Lightyear is an actual movie in the Toy Story universe and this is like a rebooted version that Andy went to go see with his kids, only to walk out highly dissatisfied with how they slandered one of his childhood favorite toys/heroes.
When I saw Toy Story 4, I was starting to think that some people were relying on animation and visuals more than storytelling and I was right. Sometimes, they do and get carried away, but Pixar should focus on animating AND telling great stories.
I think animation dorks need to take a seat and read a novel if they're looking for "great storytelling". Animation was always about visuals first and story/writing secondary. Pixar films were a fun novelty for a time when cg animation was relatively new to the mainstream, but taking them for what they are at their core: they're above average "family" flicks parents can plop their kids in front of and not feel completely guilty since they aren't actively insulting in quality compared to other children's media.
@@welfare_king Not necessarily, "story is king" is a guideline Pixar used to emphasize during the production of their films. Animation as a medium can enhance an already-strong story, and the thing that used to set Pixar apart from other studios was their ability to innovate with both. The problem is that Pixar has been leaning on their animation too heavily and expecting it to make up for stories that aren't that spectacular, in a time where realistic CG animation also isn't that groundbreaking anymore. Their films no longer have a balance of high quality and feel more like fancy tech demos with serviceable stories attached.

I've been saying that the newer Pixar movies have an uncanny valley vibe to then because the textures and lights are just so realistic and the caricature character designs totally clash with that. Thank you for bringing that up in your video. I thought I was the only one being bothered by it. Animation is an interesting medium that has the ability to tell stories live-action can not. If your film looks like a live-action except the characters it gets hard to accomplish that magic. (again, the work is admirable. But is it necessary?)
As a Cars 2 fan, I know I'm in the severe minority, but I just really enjoy that film. It breaks out of the mould of Pixar sequels by telling a complex spy thriller story, which is understandably weird to the audience but very fun!
I love cars 2, Mater just has its own shit going on and I love it.
You like what you like and that is fine. I've liked cars since I was young and considering I'm 40, that predated the Cars movie franchise...slightly lol. But now I'm running into people who like cars because they watched these movies, and Cars 2 specifically has come up a few times as the movie that made them realize "oh, there's different racing series?". Personally, it's not my favorite, but a lot of people hold it dear and I love and respect that.
I know this review was pretty indifferent towards Luca and Turning Red, but I really liked them. Luca is just a nice feelgood movie for us I loved the tie ins to old monster movies and as my wife is an astronomy minor, the whole sequence about the telescope, Luca learning about stars and the universe, and then Luca day dreaming about going to Saturn's rings & Da Vinci's flying machine, is one of my favorite sequences of all movies. Regarding Turning Red, the joy of watching my wife tell our kids stories about how she saw herself in Mei and in some of her friends was wonderful, and my kids like that movie in part because of that now, even if the whole puberty/period aspect of it flew above their heads...my wife dragging out her tamagotchi and having it now be cared for (occasionally) by my oldest also helped.

I'm glad that Monsters University isn't really lumped with the other sequels, that film has always stood out to me more than the other Pixar sequels. It's a film I really liked as a child, and still like even today. I wouldn't call it among Pixar's best, but it stands as a certified diamond in the rough for me when discussing Pixar's 2010s output.

A good story doesn’t need good animation but good animation can’t stand without a good story. My animation professor told me that. Pixar is facing a passing of the baton era where the old staff is retiring and placing the torch in the next. That’s why so much is all over the place. They need to grow into their own.

Dreamworks has finally found their flame again and is rising, now hopefully this will be the beginning of a renaissance for them as Pixar continues to fall into the pit of failure they’ve made for themselves.

One of reason Spider verse and puss last wish stand out, isn't it art/animation direction,( it certainly help but only for so long.) it writing that pushes it story from being good to great.
Absolutely. That and respect for both the characters and audience. Both films mentioned weren't afraid to tackle more mature subjects and did so respectfully, and balanced it well with the theme and story so it didn't feel out of place, and felt natural and necessary for the characters and their arcs.
This is true, I find that films (even if they aren't amazing visually) can be saved with a good/great story, animation is a good example of this. A lot of animations I love aren't exactly filled to the brim with expense.

If you can't put the passion into making a good story and don't care to fix any of it's flaws, that's almost entirely on the writer. Corporate intervention is the only exception to this, but it's not always the case.

One thing I thought I should mention about monsters university - pixar WAS completely aware about mike and sully's childhood "friendship." When writing monsters university, pixar thought about having mike and sully meet as kids, hate each other, have sully move away, then have them re-meet in college and kick off the story. But they thought that this took up too much screen time and they believed it would weaken the movie. They said that they needed to choose to either make the story "Monsters Elementary" or "Monsters University," and because they wanted it to be a more mature story, they went with Monsters University.
So yes, the movie does have its continuity error, but it is one that the creators made out of carefulness, not carelessness.

Something that I'd really love to see Pixar do is make a feature length film in the same art style as their short, "Paper Man". That kind of 2.5d art style is amazing to look at, and I think it would really help them switch their visuals up in their feature length films.
Modern pixar movies feel factory made, they just attach a random "deep" message to it and then try to build the story off of it. Most of the 2000s movies really feel like creative visions, the director had the chance to made what they truly wanted. They somehow mirrored the real world, despite their absurd premises.
If ratatouille would have been made today, it probably would be the story of a poor kid that tries to become a rich chef, instead of a rat. I really hope pixar will find its footing again

Nah. People have been lobbing similar criticisms at Pixar films even back then. I remember "Wall-E" being dismissed as another film about a living object getting lost and finding a family in a MAD Magazine spoof.
Pixar has lost many (most?) of the writers/directors that made the golden age possible and their replacements seem to be rushing away from the practices of their predecessors. Meanwhile Disney infects everything related to them with the "Play it safe cash-grab" virus. It is probably safe to say that while Pixar still has a lot of talent on staff they simply are not the same studio they once were and have no real interest in going back.

This. Companies don't really exist. Studios don't really exist. It is the people in them that make them what they are. Corporate policies and practices can give them shape and direction but soul and vision comes from the people not the board room. When those people leave you just can't replace them easily.

DreamWorks has made some stinkers bun when they commit, THEY COMMIT. Prince of Egypt is incredibly beautiful, has amazing music and has a really strong story. Megamind is a bit of an underdog but is wildly beloved and praised by its fans, a movie with a really strong story. How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek and Kung fu Panda need no introduction.
I absolutely love the animation medium and while there is space for more realistically stylized movies, like Soul for example, I dont want that to be he only standard for animation.
The point of animation isnt for us to see how much we can make it mimic reality, its about how we can break out of it and see what we can create.
I think if they stopped doing so many sequels and instead did standalone projects as they did before they would have a much better reputation soul and luca are very beloved and turning red as mixed as it is still has a lit of people who genuinely love it.

That 6 hour toy story 4 breakdown is still one of the most glorious, au tistic breakdowns I've ever seen towards a single movie. I can garantee you will probably get more entertainment and knowledge out of that video over Toy Story than TS4 alone.

I can get the realistic art style in Soul so that the real world contrasts with the afterlife, but they aren't pushing the boundaries the way animation can. 100% with you on Spider-Verse.
There was Dreamworks The Bad Guys by the way. That also has that new style of animation and it wasn't a half bad film either.
I'm a bit concerned too that Pixar is starting to crib designs from Studio Ghibli, especially Luca and Turning Red, and now Elementals seems to have that similar feel too. If Pixar really can't define itself as a distinct studio anymore, then just merge it with Disney Animation already. I have a hard time telling the difference between the studios now anyway, the movies keep getting blander and more generic every year.

It is not that Pixar themselves turned to profit after 2010 it’s that Disney started exploiting while prioritizing their own animation studio in for their rivival era and sent Pixar into a dark age( and now they exploit even their own studio sending them into a slump era) but Elemtal was good Inside Out 2 and Elio looks good I hope Pixar can enter a renaissance this decade

I feel like it’s not that Pixar doesn’t make good/great movies, but that they don’t only make good/great movies anymore.
Elemental turned out to be better than i expected, but definitely not the degree of pixar's hayday.
But after the failure of toy story 4 you can only go up really.
I feel like Pixar is struggling to find itself again. Onward, in a way, started a new era for the company. It was the first movie they made where John Lasseter wasn't at the helm of the studio, so every film that has come out since then has been entirely new blood attached. Some of them stick to landing like Soul, Luca and Turning Red. Other's do.. *not.* And it doesn't really help that they're also still under Disney's thumb at the end of the day (I'm pretty sure at this point they were outright FORCED to make Toy Story 5)
At the end of the day though, there's still plenty of talent at the company; but they're in the midst of trying to find out what works and what doesn't. Which isn't inherently a bad thing, but doesn't really bode well when DreamWorks is back on the rise and ready to leave Pixar in the dust.

If you're referring to the future of their style, you should make that clear. Signature styles are fine, as long as they can evolve over time.

I took a trip the past to watch Coraline. It still artistically holds up, it's such a timeless art style, I think it should be hosted in art classes.
Even something like Tencent's Wish Dragon. While it was a pretty watery and predictable story. The brighter, more simplistic colors were a treat to look at.
I’ve said before how Woody’s line at the end of Toy Story 3 “So long partner” felt like it was Woody saying that to Andy and the audience but he might as well have also said that to the old Pixar cause ever since that movie things have just been complicated for them, we went from most of the time having great to amazing movies (I think the weakest examples of that for most is Cars but I personally love the movie) from Toy Story to Toy Story 3 to then having great movies sometimes but usually having ones that are just forgotten or full on bad, Cars 2 may as well have been the biggest red flag in animated movie history, I mean I think we might have a bit of a problem when Disney and Pixar are making things that have been mostly forgotten with Lightyear and especially Strange World while Dreamworks makes a surprisingly really good movie with The Bad Guys and then suddenly Puss in Boots:the Last Wish comes out of nowhere, breaks down our doors like Papa Bear at Mama Luna’s place and says “You wanna see something cool?” (Seriously how was that movie so great)

Pixar was very important because it showed how unique and high quality animation could be. But most studios have their ups and downs, and inevitably fall, and become complacent but that’s where other studios come in and give them competition. I think this is really healthy, and hopefully new animation studios will make Pixar have to up their game. But who knows if that will happen?

I respect what you have to say, but I'd argue Luca is one of Pixar's best movies, precisely because it's not remarkable. It's an incredible slice-of-life movie which plays extremely straight, doesn't have an incredible amount of depth, but still manages to be really enjoyable and lovable. It's definitely one of my favorites.
It reminded me of Bolt in a way. It wasn't completely action-packed. It was a relatively simple story, but was charming in it's deliver and characters. It's nice to have movies like that from time to time, especially when so many feel like they move constantly without pausing to take a breath.

I’ll be honest. I definitely liked Finding Dory a lot when first seeing it. I saw the original Finding Nemo quite a bit before then, so I guess I was quite glad to see how they expanded the universe a little bit.
And, while the rescue plot may be somewhat similar to the original FN, Dory has her own struggles with short term memory that make the whole thing feel a lot more meaningful and worthwhile than you described.
The only thing I really didn’t like from the movie was Becky. She just seemed like a more obnoxious , unfunny replacement of the seagulls from the original, which thankfully did make a small appearance. It just felt like she was there at the expense of Marlin’s sanity.
But, then again, I haven’t seen it in a while. Maybe I just liked it more than I should because marine life interests me a lot.
I was lucky to go to Annecy Animation Festival last year. The Spiderverse sequel looks gorgeous and the antagonist is lovable but terrifying. The segments they showed us at the showcase looked like the sequel immediately picked up where we left off. It looks more bold and heartfelt and I’m super excited to watch the finished product!
I’m cautiously optimistic that a new animation studio is gonna pop up that truly makes Pixar and Disney step up their game.

well yeah, that's naturally gonna happen. It's not a question of if, but rather when. Whether people realize it or not american animation is in a transitional period currently, both in the mainstream and underground. The new school of animators are gaining traction, and over time those influences they have garnered will evolve and dominate into something new.
I liked Toy Story 4 but I've always felt it would've been better off as a spin-off.

One other thing to note too with Pixar is their decline in emotionally impactful music. A good example of Pixar music in its prime was in monster inc when the main theme plays as sully says goodbye to boo, making it all the more bittersweet. Like I was balling my eyes at the part and a great factor in this was the music. However when I think of more recent movies, I couldn’t even tell you the “main theme” for any of them. So not only has the animation for Pixar films become less and less distinct, so has their overall sound.
Pixar movies have a sort of hold on realism and details, while other companies to me don’t focus only on those facts but create a more cartoonish atmosphere leading audiences to like the fresh take after decades on the usual realistic designs.
Pixar: ok guys, we promise: no more sequels! Orginal movies from now on!
Disney: alright you had your 3 years of making no money, get back to making sequels so we can actually make money.
Pixar: you put them as Disney Plus exclusives. Of course they made no money!

to be fair to turning red, i believe it was made for a very specific audience. i can understand how it may not resonate with someone who has never been a cringey-13-year-old-girl-starting-her-period but for me personally i found a lot of enjoyment in the film

In my opinion, Pixar truly died after Up. Their newer original films aren't the same as they once were (Brave, Luca, Good Dinosaur and Onward). Not to mention that the studio now relies more on sequels of popular franchises (Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Cars and Incredibles). Sure, they still gave us some very unique animated shorts (Lava, Boa and Piper) and made some good original movies (Inside Out, Coco, Turning Red and Soul), but they didn't save Pixar much anymore.
(I feel like this studio is basically just "Disney Animation Studios 2.0" nowadays.)

Honestly, I think Pixar is capable of doing unique and appealing styles (if you've seen their shorts you'll know) but I think Disney is really holding them back from doing something entirely different.

Pixar did do unique art style with Turning Red where they added Anime elements to the animation and everyone made fun of it and told Pixar "Don't fix what aren't broke" and now everyone is saying Pixar is playing safe with their animation and should try new style like Dream Works did with Puss in Boots The Last Wish.

My biggest problem with modern Pixar (specifically since Incredibles II) is the lack of creativity. The writers for that movie had fourteen years to come up with a story just as good as the original, and instead we got Evelynn Devor. We got dumb selfish Bob. We got shouting useless Dash. WE GOT DEUS EX JACK-JACK. And don't even get me started on Toy Story 4. You may say it's fine, but I think it's an atrocity and Gaming Magic 13 has every right to shred it for six hours.
Whether it's Disney putting too much pressure on Pixar or hiring good creative writers is harder than obsidian blocks in Minecraft, it doesn't matter. Pixar is not as good as it once was and if they don't change then they're going to be drowned out by other studios who have stepped up their game.

At the end of The _Incredibles,_ the Underminer declares war on all of humanity. At the beginning of _The Incredibles II,_ the Underminer is merely robbing a bank. They retconned the first film to get rid of a more interesting idea than the plot and villain they ended up going with.

I feel that right now. The animation industry needs to push more towards stylization rather than being realistic because we have kind of near the end of "Moore's law" in terms of animation. Animation like in pixar has become very realistic that people actually want to see something else that uses the animation medium more creatively.
