How to Propagate Begonias - Ep 108
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- I've covered begonia propagation here before with Steve's Leaves (Ep. 039. - • BEGONIA PROPAGATION - ... ), but I always like to see how other people in other parts of the world are propagating the same plants, because as we'll find out from Sandy-it might be done slightly differently given the different climate conditions.
Be sure to tune back in here because we have one more propagation video coming up in this week's Propagation Week series!

So rare to see a video like this where the guy is not condescending. He is so nice, it was a pleasure to watch!
wow, he cut that leaf with just hand pressure and it came out so even! wow! the experience!
I didn't know you could propagate the leaves! I've learned so much from your channel. Thank you! I'm also very distracted by your abs 💪
Right!? Those abs tho
Amooooooo
yes u can. try it.
That's why she is dressed like that
This is first time I see her abs wow time for plants and exercises 😳😍
All of these videos with Sandy in Singapore have been enjoyable and informative!!! Sandy & Summer together are a great video team!
Thank you Diane! Summer was awesome to work with!
Hi mind sharing the nursery name in Singapore?
good... Very Athletic information...
@@sandysoh1742 can you please share where do you buy your begonia seeds? thanks a lot!
I purchased my 1st begonia on a trip in Tampa, FL a few weeks ago and I knew absolutely nothing about them until watching your earlier video w/ Steve of Steve's Leaves and now this one w/ Sandy Soh . So incredibly informative and I look forward to adding many more begonia species to my collection! Thanks to you both for sharing your knowledge! :)
I really like these episodes because l live in a tropical country and also love plants a lot😍
Thanks. I had a hard time propagating my begonias. So far i have 4 varieties
This plant is so interesting and easy to propagate. I would love to hear more about this begonia. Is Sandy have a channel too? I'm loving this propagating series of yours Summer 💕 this past few weeks I'm getting this urge to love more different kinds of plants it's just they always die. That's why I stopped buying and having them in my home. But lately we just move to a new home and I think our water here is much better and the sunlight too. I'm starting to buy some few plants and they're still alive maybe it's the water or sunlight or maybe I'm just more curious lately of my plants and searching on how to take care of them properly.
I love, love, love the Amphioxus !!! She is probably my favorite. I tell everyone "Do not touch it. See the red spots its poisonous". 🤣🤭🤪🤪
😂😂😂
Once I got over the "begonias are your grandparents plants" mindset I found them to be a joy to grow! My technique is very similar to Sandy's except I use a domed container since I'm not right above the equator. I use the plastic domed containers they put rotisserie chickens in at the market. Be nice to your deli/supermarket workers plant people and they'll be more than happy to give you some. They're great friends for a plant person to have!
Love that you use rotisserie containers. I've seen salad containers use at botanic gardens!
@@summerrayneoakes salad containers are perfect for transitioning water propagations of your favorite genera to soil. I haven't lost a pep fraseri yet and I'm doing what I can to keep plastic out of the Earth. 🌎👍
@@petercardona1559 I am wondering if plastic containers are going to be phased out, what will be possible to use. Maybe buy specific ones for the purpose, reusable domes. Clear plastic shoeboxes are something that can also be used (an I use clear large plastic containers for when I travel 2 weeks to keep plants from drying out while I am away)
@@stefpix that would be a drag if they do get phased out. I used to use a big clear 30 gallon storage bin with trays & fiber pots in them as a propagation station so I probably revert to that.
@@petercardona1559 I think it would be for the better good to ban plastic single use containers that are a plague in the USA. Just the coffee lids / iced coffee containers, styrofoam cups, salad container impact the environment for 100s of years for a single 5 minute use. Chicken could be sold in a foil or paper container. I am trying to minimize / avoid as much as I can. Recycling is not the answer as plastic can be recycled only a few times, and in NYC often recycling ends up in the regular trash. Plastic use and increasing population are an environmental disaster. Plastic litter desert beaches from NYC to the Caribbean , and microplastics float in the ocean. Time to be responsible.
Begoniac here 🤪 begonias are SO fun!! My lazy method is water propagation. Leaf AND stem cuttings work this way. Over a dozen varieties in my collection now.. i can’t stop!!
It would make my whole year if my angel wing begonia would blood this year...east-facing window...
Does this work with the maculata? :)
I can’t seem to get a cutting to propagate I don’t understand why :(
I cut under the node leaving a bit of stem and it also had 3 leaves on it. Second day in water and the stalks on one of the leaves looked sad and next day was mushy so I cut it off, then the rest of the cutting started happening the same. I still have it in water to see if anything will happen as it had one small shoot coming and it still looks OK.
I been unlucky with these :/
@@AdriCr4ft olá, já tentaste de novo?
leaf technique is pretty cool... he makes it look easy..
Thank you! Very informative, since I've just bought a begonia 😅 Does this way of propagation apply to all kinds of begonias? I have a begonia madaiensis.
that's what i'm thinking too haha
I love him! I need a sandy channel. Only, he said no coco chior, yet is using peat, same thing as far as moisture yes?
A turma adorou, deu bastante jeito. Obrigado!!!
I would of never thought of using the leaf like that. Always just used stem. Learned something new today. Its been a great week with the both of you on the videos. Thank you both...
you can do the same with peperomias too
more knowledge! awesome. thank you, Sandy & Summer!
you're so welcome!
Check out the abs?
Very infrmative vedio.and like that man a lot he seems to be vry frndly and gental
Now these I grow! Thanks ever so much!
Watering?
I'm in love with your series!!
Wow! I did not know you could propagate begonias this way! Very educational
I'll always remember the name Begonia amphioxus because of your reference to amphibian skin.
Nice mnemonic sneak-in ;)
I'm LOVING these propagation videos, as it's one of my favorite things about plants. Side note, you look super strong!
That yoga body tho
Befonia amphioxus is endemic to sabah.
XD
I need to get one
Beautiful begonias. Enjoying these new videos !! Thank you for sharing
I love begonias & can propagate them like crazy! However, I can't keep them alive. I imagine it's a humidity issue.
Hi Summer! can you have an episode on Plant Tissue Culture?? Love from the Philippines..
Watching your channel helps so many people across the globe 💖
Nice sharing dr, i also upload begonia variety
singapore’s humidity: good for begonias, bad for hoomans :(
haha I so agree!
Ok abs
I’m finding that begonias are much more easier when you break it down to simple steps
I just did this yesterday!!
lush, just so luuush, the plants are nice also.
Please send me begonia cocopid and what the authors
Summer looks so tall next to the guy.
hi im begonia lover from malaysia. very simple and full of information video. thank you. sandy one of my favorite plant people.
Very helpful.
Where is your numbers handphone sir,,,
Why am I watching this, I don't even have a single begonia 😩
Tho I want to start a begonia collection tho...
Really interesting but why are you using peat? So unnecessary and destructive, and also why are you talking about fungicide? I'm so glad he answered you like he did.
That fern though. Im inlove
Summer have you heard of Logee's Green house in Danielson CT. They are a relative on my grandfathers side of the family so I have been going to the greenhouses since of was a kid. They specialize in Begonias. I just happened on your channel today so I don't know if you have mentioned them or gone to the greenhouse. Check them out you won't be disappointed! There youtube page is Logeeplants. They have tours of all the greenhouses on the youtube page.
OH great!! I've done leaf cuttings with African violets and had success with them but I can't wait to try with Begonia leaves!!💖💖💖🥰
I tried with leaf cuttings and stem but seems just die off in 2 days. Iam using peatmoss, akadama and pumice mix. The soil is moist. Wonder what went wrong. Any advise?
Thanks for this video Summer. So after fixing the leaf part and petiole in the potting mix don't we need to water/mist it?
Vidya Sam a plastic bag to trap in humidity would be more beneficial than misting. You don’t want the soil too wet, but definitely want condensation to form on the bag. Open every few days to prevent stagnant air from molding your cuttings!
@@curiositygarden Wow great thanks! Now I understood why my cuttings got rot last time when I tried.
it does have to be watered and kept moist.
@@curiositygarden how long do you air it out before you cover it back up?
Okay he said no cocoa fiber, right? So it's more sand & peat based media. Coz mine keep dying on me and I live in Malaysia. ):
I have learned a lot from your VLOG, now your new Subscriber.. 👍👍
How much is it watered??
Did Sandy water the medium after planing the leaf? Do we water it moist or water thoroughly? my issue is the leaf always start to dark/rot before it has chance to shoot of roots..
Hi Summer, great video. Can you give me a tip where to order exotic begonia seeds? (In Europe)
mera begonia plant kharab ho rha hai pls help me
Does this method work on all varieties of begonias or these 3 only
I have failed to keep my begonia alive.
*My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined*
Culturally wish you would have worn a shirt to cover your stomach for this demo.
I don’t. She is a beautiful fit woman and is inspiring people to lead a healthy life.
Mine didn't survive.
at what stage after propagating do you do the first watering??? :)
Yeay i just hv begonia black velvet
So informative! Thank you! 💖🌿🦋
do you water it?
I get information n learn english from your talk.
Waww only by leafs???no roots???
Oh my God goodness gracious, you are so beautiful
Best video out there and he doesn't waste the stem like everyone else does!
does this worl for begonia soli mutata?
Where do you get begonia seeds from?

Beutiful
What's her fitness routine?
You're so pretty

hi. i have a weird luck with purchased plants, specially with the ones that i purchase online. Most of them came naked root and 2 out of 5 have survive, and they havent been what a want it to be, so what's your recomendation to help naked root plants?.
I receive my plants from overseas always bare root. First thing to do would be to remove any rotten roots or leaves of the plant. Try potting them up in long fiber sphagnum moss. After they take root, you can transfer to any other media that you want or just leave them in the sphagnum.
@@sandysoh1742 tanks you
He seems so happy
What is that RED plant on the right? I can't take my eyes of it.
Aloe dorotheae
Will it works with begonia maculata
Doesn't work with maculata
Wonderful toned abs
When propagating begonia, does it need to put water or just stay it dry? Thanks much 🙂
Water thoroughly
Didn't covered when to water and how to water these cuttings?
water thoroughly after potting
I’ll be going to singapore later this year. May I ask where is this place?
Chico Perello it should be terrascape :)
Did he add fertilizer to the potting mix?
I’m from the Philippines who always watch your videos...it’s fun because i learn a lot...
What is the watering situation after you put the leaf in soil? Keep moist or keep dry to prevent rot?
Your short shirt is distracting
Quit being so vain
