I have a Colt New Agent, with Novak Tritium sights, in 45 ACP. This is exactly the same as the Colt Defender in 45 ACP. This is my EDC weapon. I have several thousand rounds through it, with any jams or other issues. I love this pistol and favor it over all other weapons for concealed carry. I'd prefer my Colt Commander or Government, but this is much more concealable. I run the stock grips, although I prefer the Pachmayr grips I run on my Commander for the larger pistol. With 7+1 (with the standard Mag, it is only one bullet short of the 9mm. And it will fit a standard 8 rd M1911 magazine, as well as a 10 rd magazine for reloads. It's easy to shoot, recovers quickly for follow-up shots, and the fit and finish is excellent. I highly recommend it, for those of you that prefer a little less recoil, I'm sure the 9mm version is fine.
Loving my Defender 9. Had one several years ago in .45 but had to get rid of it due to bills. Always knew I would get another but wanted it in 9 and Colt finally started to churn them out so my dream came true 😍
Do you like the 9 version better ?
I have a Novak’s-built Defender 9mm with a Harrison flat adjustable trigger and a EGW guide rod kit. It is an outstanding weapon.
Nice looking little pistol. I think we have the same thoughts on carrying (or rather not carrying) a 1911. Great and reliable platform but I feel more comfortable carrying Striker fired generally.
But as I always say, "as long as it goes bang".
Thanks for the comment and complement! Great minds think alike. You're right though, as long as it goes bang. Cheers!
I have a Colt Defender 9mm for several months now and I have shot it enough to LOVE it!!! Functions flawlessly with all ammo I feed it. It is very accurate. Fit and finish could not be better in my opinion. Shoots and feeds my EDC hollow points with no issues at all. I would recommend the Defender to anyone who might be in the market for a small 1911 in 9mm. There is NO reason to pay the extra money for an EMP or a Kimber. This is a very nice handgun!!!
Oooh, that's pretty! I can't wait to move from NYC.
Just make sure when you move to a sane state, you keep voting for marxist politics! It’s swell.
@@RogersGirl88 Likely FL
Did you move ? It’s been 3 years
@@DARTHDANSAN Still working on it. Life has gotten quite challenging lately.
I carry the defender with the Hogue grips, only "shiny" gun I own. I shot it low as well at first but with more rounds I shot it more accurately. Great trigger, and i know where the most important first round will hit. Low recoil, and fun to shoot. Love this gun.
Thanks Greg! It is a great gun for sure. I like the sight lineup. Very easy to acquire. Cheers!
I own kimbers, springfields, paraordnance and colt 1911s. I find the defender on par with my kimber tra carry ii. Shoots great. Finished well. A real keeper.
I owned a defender 45 acp back in 2014. I liked the way it shot. I really liked how it felt in my hand. I also liked the way it felt while carrying. The problem was how the brass ejected, most times it would hit me in the forehead and even make a swoosh right into my shirt pocket on occasion. I have heard it is hit and miss sometimes with the way the 1911 models ejects brass.
Me too
Nice looking gun.. Unfortunately Colt doesn't sell any new handguns in sorry state California. I am super happy with my Springfield EMP 3". I really like the 1911 platform in 9mm, nice triggers let the rounds out smooth as silk.
Beautiful!
I almost bought one of these last year, the previous version though with the Hogue grip, and I still want one. I do like the previous version better and the rubber wrap around grip, but for now it will have to be on the "list"...
erazimoth thanks for the comment! both are great options indeed. I haven't shot the previous version but I imagine it would be a bit more comfortable to shoot with the hogue grips. Cheers!
I have one... awesome little shooter!
That's awesome! Thank you and cheers!
My Defender in .45 is my favorite gun that I own. I look forward to getting one in 9mm.
That's awesome Dan! Great shooters indeed. Thank you and cheers!
Oh that is a beautiful grip
Love it i want one of these beauties in 9mm or 45acp love the compact design for EDC
I think the reason for the mags feeling tight may be that the mag release drags on the side of the magazine making it feel tight. Try inserting the mag with the mag release pressed in and see if it is smoother.
Follow-up. Called Colt, they claimed extractor tunning and offer a 6 weeks turn around or DIY via UA-cam. So tried the UA-cam way and now gun works like a Swiss watch. Perfect! Incredible accuracy.
Glad it’s running for you now! Thanks for the update Sailor. Cheers!
Good looking gun...I like those grips!!! That barrel is nice and thick...I'm sure +p ammo will be no issue
Thanks Gerald! The bull barrel is pretty crazy for sure. Cheers brother!
Nice review of the Colt Defender. I picked up a used stainless 9mm model that was listed as only having one magazine through it. Don't really know but it looks brand new and it was a bargain. The only downer was it only came with one magazine because the store couldn't find the other one that was listed on the price tag. I have since added a Kimber and Rock Island Armory magazine to the stable. The Colt magazines are hard to come by. I finally got it out after having it for over a year and was disappointed to have it shoot really low. Low as in off the paper at 7 yards. My 5" 1911's in .45 Auto & 9mm has me flirting with one ragged hole if I don't hurry things along. The only mods to my Defender were taking off the rubber grips for some wood and replacing the plastic mainspring housing with a metal one. I will be trying to shoot more defensive ammo through it to see if things move up on the paper. I can say that it hasn't malfunctioned yet with different makes of 115, 124, and 147 gr. bullets. If it still shoots low then the next upgrade will be nite sites with a lower front site as long as things are measured up correctly.
Great Review! Thanks
Thank you very much! Cheers!
Love those grips with the black pistol...Good review vid...Good stuff....
Scott F. Thanks Scott! As always, thanks for checking in brother!
Who makes the grips?
love those grips
1776 or Bust Where could I find those grips?
I am getting one in .45 for my carry gun. I have a larger 1911 in 10mm and I would carry it but it is big and heavy, plus the recoil of the 10mm makes follow up shots a bit slow. Not impossible, but slower than a caliber like .45 that has less recoil. These are nice guns but I don't care much for the gap in the front between the barrel and the guide pin, so there is a kit sold by Kimber that gets rid of the gap and makes them easier to field strip.
looks great . Reminds Me of a Star PD45 long ago .
Dang, i had one of those too.
Awesome gun!
GunCollector007 thank you very much!
Great review. I have been looking to buy one of these but havent decided on whether I want the .45acp or .9mm. I only have one 1911 at the moment a Colt Super Elite in .38Super w/ a .9x23mmWin barrel and spring. I have wanted a Defender since I played the game The Last of Us. The Lead character Joel uses a Colt Defender in .9mm but the barrel size looks like a .45, LoL. I know that may be a dumb reason to want a pistol but it will round out my Last of Us collection as I own the rest of the models used in this game.
There is no shame in having an inspiration for a gun! That Super Elite sounds awesome. I do recommend checking out the Defender. It's pretty small but still very shootable. I'd love to hear what you think if you get one. Cheers!
I have the 45 Defender and it runs flawlessly. I also shoot at Centerfire
nothing like a colt no matter which model.or caliber. revolver, semi, single action, your holding history. and a dam fine firearm.
great vid love those grips
Thanks brother!
I'm carrying a Walther PPS M2 currently, but will be transitioning to an SA RO Compact in 9mm when the weather gets cooler. I had been EDCing a Ruger Ltwt Commander in 9mm, prior to obtaining the Walther this spring. However, I'm a 1911 fan through and through, and am considering a stainless Colt Defender in 9mm for my warm weather EDC.
How do you like the colt defender versus the Walther PPSM2? I currently have a Walther PPSM 2, but I am thinking of making a change to a colt defender or a colt mustang
The Walther is a 'rust magnet". The trigger also exhibits 'trigger slap', which is annoying.
I love all 1911 but colt is the one next to my heart . And trusty . I have a colt Deffender light wight compact 45 acp . Never ever sell it. My wife carry the sig sauer 1911 compact 45 . Cheers .
Nice review, never saw this review found it on the Colt site.
Thank you Keanon! It was a fun gun to review for sure. Cheers!
Since there is no barrel bushing, the tapered bull barrel 'wedges' against the slide opening, eliminating foward barrel play.
Very nice 1911, so nice I bought one, just want to know what size grips are those slim or standard, if I go standard might have to change bushings and screws.
Great video, been trying to find one in 9mm but only find them in 45😭. Search continues 🤩
My dad picked up one today at a gun show: blue, 9mm, STI short trigger, front night sight, ivory polymer grips, and (4) mags. 95%+ condition for $800.
Jim Hovater that’s a steal of a deal. I’m still looking for a good deal... actually I’m still looking and haven’t found one yet.
VERYGOOD@THAILAND
Great Review, Very nice little pistol! Carry On!
Thanks again Big Johnson! You rock, brother!
I have that watch!
Awesome!
Also what do u carry 230 grn 185, 200 please let me know
What grain bullet do you recommend for this gun? Great review by the way man.
Thank you very much! It should be able to handle any grain you put in it. I prefer 124gr for it, but have no problem with others. Cheers!
KSGunGuy excellent, just wanted to know if 115 grains worked since its not as powerful. But that's great, thank you bud
Great review. Despite your feeding issues I wasn't hesitant to buy one of these even after watching your video. I had intended to buy it anyway. New out of the box it took some work to get it apart for cleaning and proper lubrication; it was very stiff. Initially the slide was sticking all the way back, and I thought sure as heck this is going to be a little fussy putting it back together and getting the first 100 rounds through it. But it went back together okay even though it seemed fairly rough. From my experience with a few other subcompact 9mm guns (Sig P938, Kahr PM9, Walther PPS M2) I used only 124 gr FMJ and JHP ammo for the initial break in. The first 100 cycled fine and the gun smoothed up significantly. I used my one Colt magazine and a bunch of Springfield Armory RO 9mm compact magazines without a hitch (fired from an 8+1 loadout). Even the longer magazines worked fine. Second time cleaning the gun, after 125 rounds, went smoothly. The trigger takes some getting used to since it's new but I suspect that will smooth up over time. Next weekend I will cycle about 50 rounds of 147 gr JHP through it.
That’s awesome Richard! Thank you for sharing and cheers!
KSG did u find yours to require a break-in period. I'm getting mine Wed.
Thanks for the comment and questions Mike! I found no break in period at all. As for ammo, any good quality self defense ammo should work but test it out before carrying. Hope that helps. Cheers!
How does this current bluing hold up?
Hard choice for me 😁 defender9 or EMP9? Which one would you pick and why...
Thanks for the comment and question! Honestly it's an easy question for me. The EMP. It fits my hand better and for whatever reason I shoot it better. Both are well made and good quality, but I have always been attracted to the EMP. I'll be doing a comparison between the two soon. Cheers!
Thanks 👍
Do they come with a ramped barrel in 9mm?
Just a little pain in the butt removing the firing pin and extractor. Smith&Wesson has and external extractor but still has the plunger that has to be depressed . Probably the Colt is about the same as far as the safety plunger. S&W is a 3” barrel also in the 1911.
I own this gun in both 9mm and 45ACP. Your comment about the 9mm being a little snappy is certainly accurate but it also has a fairly stiff recoil spring so some of that energy gets transferred on to the shooter. There is, indeed, a plethora of 9mm single stack guns out there that give buyers a lot of choices these days. I think with the Defender you have to want a 1911 design to appreciate this gun. Both of mine have been accurate and reliable. I have no quality issues with either of these models; they are very well built.
@Kimberyote3 The 9mm version is smoother to shoot but even that is a little snappy compared to a lot of other single stack 9mm.
bought defender in january. fired 15 rounds and it had two different failures. today may 2 the gun is still in the shop and was told to give to a couple more weeks been in shop from january 31 one person said 2-3 months is normal. last colt ever on my safe
michael quain Michael that sounds like a terrible experience! I'm shocked that they can at least turn it around faster, let alone have it run right out of the box! I hope you get some satisfaction soon. Cheers!
michael quain sucks to hear that.. I have had 110% luck with all my Colts new and old. Including a new defender lightweight that runs like a champ. On the other hand I have had 2 Springfield’s that both had serious issues.. one was sent back twice and still wasn’t properly fixed. No doubt Springfield customer service was good to deal with, god knows I talked to them enough... but to be fair they were not any quicker “not” fixing my Range officer
Disregard last ~?? U got a 9mm so what's the carry ammo 115 124, 147grn
Who makes the grips?
What does it weigh loaded with one in the pipe and full mag ?
Thanks for the question Gregory. The 9 rounds will add just under 4oz so fully loaded it will be just shy of 28oz.
What do you carry?
you said it was a little snappy compared... would that include the EMP?
Thanks for the question! Yes, I'd say it's snappier (not by much) than the EMP. Cheers!
Thanks. I’m rebuying an emp 9mm. This time a 4” barrel. Small hands should be perfect. Or a Colt LW comm. even considering a Ruger SR1911 LW comm
I have to say, the EMP is tough to beat. The ergos and craftsmanship are spot on and the grips on the Carry 4" version are great. I think you'll really like it.
thanks, I'm ex LEO Love my 92 and HK P2000SK 9mm.. I tried the Glocks and strikers -and shoot them well. But, prefer the safety/decock SA the 1911 just seems to bed the best fit.. I've had several & love them
hello, could you compare the EMP to the Colt Defender?
Great suggestion Clay! I'll see what I can do on that. Thank you and cheers!
I'm not that up on models it, does this come in 45 in the same frame or is this smaller for the 9mm?
rock island armory has a ccp 1911 in .45 ACP
ua-cam.com/video/4149nqq3KDc/v-deo.html
apologies- this is more appropriate for small ccw in 45- ua-cam.com/video/B2jvEeQWu5w/v-deo.html
Where did you get the blue grips?
Great question Tim! They are from StonerCNC. There should be a link and discount code in the description. Thank you and cheers!
Could a red dot be mounted on one of these?
Yes, on the front sight.
Does it say made in Hartford CT? Wyoming guy
Yan lang masaya nako
Pretty sure your slide is carbon steel, not stainless. I don't believe stainless steel can be blued. Make sure you wipe it down once in a while. Nice looking pistol!
dantru1990 you are indeed correct on that. Great catch and advice as well. Thank you and cheers!
stainless can be ion bonded which Colt is using now more often
When is colt going to make a polymer striker fire pistol?
i think i like the Sig P938 more. Im gonna pick it up in a few minutes
Awesome!
I would love to have that gun and CC it, and I have the money to buy it the only problem is all 1911 have malfunctioning issues and there's no way I'm going to walk out the house with the gun that's not reliable. looks like my first Hammer fire gun is going to be the HK p30sks
Seth Clayburn thanks for the comment! I think any gun can have reliability issues but if you test it for functionality and care for it, a 1911 can fit the bill. That said polymer guns are indeed inherently reliable and certainly a great choice for self defense. I'm sure the hk will be awesome. They are top quality! Cheers
i didnt feel that this pistol was snappy at all... what gun do you typically shoot?
Kyle, I shoot and carry all kinds. Take a look around the channel if you're curious. Compared with other similar guns like the EMP 3 inch, I feel the Colt has more felt recoil. Not a big deal, just an observation. Cheers
KSGunGuy no prob. I just picked up this defender in the talo edition and took it shooting for first time the other day and I thought it was pleasant to shoot. I have never shot the emp though or any other 3 inch 1911 9mm for that matter.
I do prefer the Defender's looks. I think they are some of the best looking 1911s out there.
The holster in the ad, not the Colt video.
Ah ok. Yeah others can’t see what ad you see so needed some extra explanation. At least it was a holster ad, lol.
They are hard to find.
And God made man BUT Sam Colt made 'em all equal.
EMP clone? but without the slimmer grip.
More like the emp cloned the defender as it came first
Looks like Colt and Smith&Wesson got the same gun. This is funny who stall from who?
How does this compare to the Sig P938?
I’d go with the Colt. The Sig is a great gun but a bit of a wrist snapper. Thank you and cheers!
looks like a great gun, but in terms of more bang for your bucks, the EMP comes with 3 mags, while the Colt only 2 and Springfiel Armory has a great deal going on now where you get 4 Free mags with the purchase of any piston by June 30th.....just saying....
I agree Winston. I did the EMP 3 review and absolutely loved it. Between the 2, I'd opt for the Springfield as well. The sale going on is a great incentive as well. Cheers!
Yeah but the EMP is a Springfield, right? :-( Wouldn't buy..
Keith Brandson I understand what you are saying completely. Too bad too because it's a great gun!
Not A 1911 but still nice gun. 1911 style.
Does it fit a standard 1911 grip?
It does not. Thank you and cheers!
Where can I get this gun ?
An FFL.
1st Brother!💥
Thanks as always!!
What I don't get is; 45acp 1911 with 7-8 round capacity magazines, 9mm 1911 with 8 round capacity magazines. 9mm is a smaller round! Why can't it fit 10 rounds in a magazine in 9mm, especially in full size. It makes no sense!
I have 3 and all I can say is that Colt is AMERICAN quality. End of story.
This or EMP?
Girscan mc1911sc ???
ชอบครับ.
I strongly agree.
I am rather disappointed that you did not show the target after the shooting. In fact you should have shown the target periodically during the shooting. We did not get to see how well it shot.
The lighting in your videos casts a shadow over the firearms you are reviewing. Maybe try putting some lights behind you 🤔🤔🤔🤓🤓 I do like your videos, but I feel like you needed to know this.
Thank you for the feedback! It's an old video. Things on the channel look very different now. Cheers!
KSGunGuy No problem. I knew that I would have wanted someone to tell me, if it were my video. 👍🏻👍🏻😁🤓🇺🇸
Out of the box dead accurate but also does not eject spent shells. You buy Colt thinking you buy top quality and not so. Now deal with Colt customer service, return gun and pray it comes back fixed. Big pain in the a...
You buy Glock or XDs and they are problem free!
I've hear others say the same thing. Seems that Colt is not going through much of a quality control unfortunately. Thank you and cheers!
You can't beat the S&W M&P shield 9mm
At 24 oz, it's definitely snappier than one in 33 oz as the combat commander or the government in 40 oz.
Plain physics.
F=ma ; ma=ma 🙄
I dont like that camera view
Thank you for the feedback.
So you don't want to carry it as your carry gun, then why have this video, we like so many may or may not want to carry a 1911 model style, Leave that to us and talk about the one you carry!!
1.4 hell that's a 2x4 Every pistol is the world will fit in that width. Too wide
Thanks for the feedback John! I agree. Cheers!
Dont buy an HK or Glock then. They are definitely 2x4
Bul S.A.S is a better pistol
Small rounds only 8? It has to be a 15-16 rounds. Which is good. Not gonna buy that, it should be a 15-16 rounds 9mm ammo. Trash that.
It probably wouldn't operate for you anyway; it's not polymer.
