I share the same feeling, it’s a carry gun. Not the most comfortable gun to shoot, but it will get you out of a situation. Range gun is one of those guns that just shoots comfortable.

MD....Nice review. I've had this gun for years. Mine is the Pro Series with the Scandium frame. I added and blended a Wilson Combat magwell and run Tripp officers magazines. I've had zero issues with mine with all types of ammo, ball and defensive rounds. When I purchased mine, I ordered 4 additional flat recoil springs from Colt and have yet to replace the original. I did replace the stock slide stop with a EGW barstock model but otherwise all stock parts were obtained. It is "snappy" to say the least, but it's never had a malfunction of any kind. For a concealed carry .45, I consider it to be at or near the top of the list for inside 10 yard defensive "issues". Slim, lightweight enough loaded with 8 rounds, AND carried in a beautiful alligator OWB holster from DM Bullard.

I had a Colt Defender in stainless steel. It was a great looking gun; and from the standpoint of collectability, I wish I had never parted with it, or any of my other Colt 1911's. Colt's quality is in the middle of the 1911 scale, but they remain highly desirable to collectors. But, I did not find the Defender pleasurable to shoot. Some more experienced shooters told me that the gun was a carry gun; not a range gun. That made no sense to me; especially after I acquired a Glock 30s, which was similarly sized, lighter and a blast to shoot at the range. (No pun intended.) The G30s became an all-time favorite carry gun, and the Colt Defender was eventually traded for a Dan Wesson V-Bob; a superb 1911.

@@MDpolo , I was fortunate enough to get one of the first run 1911's from Dan Wesson; who, previously, were only known for making excellent revolvers. I owned a Dan Wesson .357 magnum, with interchangeable barrels, so I was willing to give their 1911's a try. To this day, I will put the Valor and V-Bob I bought that year, up against any 1911's out there. I've challenged braggadocious Wilson Combat owners to Ransom rest their Government and Commander sized 1911's, in a contest against my Dan Wesson's. No takers! When Dan Wesson first began producing 1911's, they actually didn't have any 'production' capability. They leaned heavily on Ed Brown for their frames and components. Those early guns were essentially Ed Brown's 'Special Forces' guns, with fit and finishing performed by the craftsmen at Dan Wesson.

I've owned/carried Defender and New Agent examples in 45 since 2010. Zero luck with any mags other than the Colt 7rd - that includes Wilson Combat. The springs in the Colt mags are considerably stiffer than most - which is required to position the next round during the short/fast cycle of 3" 1911's.
In my experience the recoil spring(s) begin to weaken after 6-800 rounds. The solution is as simple as keeping a new one in the gun and running something in less than new condition at the range.
I too had problems initially with brass being kicked directly back into my face/forehead. This was corrected by installing a "tuned" ejector - one that is slightly shorter - thus delaying the ejection and preventing the ejection port area of the slide from sending the spent case rearward.

I had the opportunity to shoot an older Defender with the duckbill instead of the beavertail and it was not comfortable. 45 is stout in these but definitely not unmanageable. I can't thank you enough. I saw the YT vid on re. replacing the rod assembly, and it truly gave me pause because I was hesitant to fault a manufacturer like Colt. But then I saw your vid and it confirmed my concerns, and lo and behold, I ordered the assembly. One favor, sir: maybe a video on disassembly (there seems to be a shotage) becasue I want to see if re-assembly is the same with the Ronin EMP (that one vexed me when trying to insert the pin becaue it didn't dawn on my until near the end of my desparation that there is a tiny spring rod against which the strip pin will abut, but you have to push that rod out of the way for the pin to go in flush. Again, my sincerest thanks.

I have the New Agent and for me it was tough to shoot compared to full sized 1911s so I had some work done to morph it into a Defender, installing XS night sights, the same beavertail and side safety lever as on your Defender, a Smith & Alexander magwell for a bevel and extra grip length with a little bit more weight in the hand, and correct Wilson Officer length magazines and additional adaptor base plates to be able to install and use with Wilson #47 full length magazines without risk of over insertion. Most important of all I also installed the Kimber recoil guide rod spring system, As you note the OEM Colt rod is flimsy, with a wafer thin base secured only by a "c" clip and the front bushing leaves a gap under the barrel. Kimber got it right and their rod can be dismantled more readily to change out springs. Its impossible on the Colt with that "c" clip. These little 1911s should refresh springs about every 300 to 600 shots depending on how hot your ammo is, otherwise there is risk of frame battering and cracking from excessive range practice. These are meant to be constantly carried but moderately trained with. There was a recall on some of these early New Agents, the gunsmiths who did my work advised that it was for what they remedied, the recoil spring guide rods were losing "c" clips and the small pad side safety levers were replaced with standard length thumb pads.
