I knew Glenn Gould from Strafford, Canada where with my father Oscar Shumsky and Leonard Rose directed the festival there. He sometimes would drive us to the Dairy Queen in his old white Lincoln Continental. Glenn was a wonderful man and both my parents were so fond of him. I have great memories of him coming for dinner and remember his superlative playing. Eric Shumsky

Glenn Gould is immortal. His recordings remain at the forefront of standards for clarity, interpretation, versatility and recording innovations. He has been called the first true recording artist and thus served classical music like no person before him and few after him. His written essays, radio and television scholarship, especially his works that illuminate Arnold Schoenberg, remain touchstones of the highest excellence.

6 or so properties north west of the Gould's cottage was my family's cottage . Fountains beach Uptergrove on Lake Simcoe back in the mid fifties I fell in love with Glenn's dog Banquot. A beautiful collie that i played with as a child while wandering up and down the beach. i got permission from Glenn to play with his dog so long as I returned it at the end of the day. This lasted for a few summers until i got my own dog in 1959. So i can say my first dog friend was Glenn Gould's dog. I knew that Glenn was a famous pianist but that didn't seem to effect our good neighbour relationship. As Glenn's career grew so did my love for Bach's music. I think Glenn Gould's greatest achievement was bringing Bach's music to the 20th century. he magically brought Bach's Goldberg Variations to the New York hit parade in the early 50's. when i heard that Glenn died from a stroke at the young age of 50 i was devastated.

The cottage our family rented a couple of weeks each year in the mid to late '70s was said to be beside Glenn Gould's cottage. I understood there was a piano inside the cottage. I was strictly warned that if this neighbour were to come to the cottage I was not to bother him. I wondered who this important person was; I never saw him. It was nearly 10 years later when I came to understand who Glenn Gould was.

Thank you. There is one detail that should be addressed. Glenn Gould in fact very much disliked anything to do with fishing. In fact, he would take his motor boat and circle around fisherman to scare away the fish. He thought that catching fish was cruel.

My father took us camping at Bass Lake, just outside Orillia, every summer when I was a boy. He always thought the fishing was better. I went back a few years ago. The town has seen better days but the surrounding countryside is still beautiful.

I have been a GG fan for years, and didn't know some of this info. However, you got two things wrong: 1) The Foss family were not at the time in LA, but in nearby Buffalo when the affair took place, and 2) not all conservative towns are "boring" and "backward."

When you are a musician you have to keep your hands warm. Now, because of his back problems, it may very well be that his blood circulation was not quite the same, so that his hands would easily get cold. Which is why he wore gloves. And indeed, the hypothesis is almost proven by the fact that he would warm his arms up in warm water.
How unbelievably stupid and mean most people are! They judge exceptional people by their own idle eccentricity, because they themselves - whatever they do - do it constantly for show, not for functionality.

When I was researching my book of poetry about him (I believe I began about 10 years ago from this day.), I interviewed an older man who had to take blood thinners, as GG did. He was cold all the time and felt like he wanted to have a coat indoors in the airconditioning etc. Also I suffered from some nerve and circulation problems, and a slight draft could cause chills, and someone shaking my hand or jostling me really hurt a lot. I wonder if people who make fun of him or treat him like a freak are the same type who misunderstand sick or disabled people. I really did not understand what it was like until I experienced being ill.

    Gould: Not Gold.
This speaker knew nothing about Glenn Gould: only about the fact he and his family lived in a local cabin up by Lake Simcoe.
This presenter should stick to talking about scenery: not about that to which he is obviously clueless.
He's like people new to classical music who contact their local station during request hour and call a piece "the Bugs Bugs theme" (because that's where they first heard it: like the Barber of Seville Overture or any other classical piece which they heard used in a cartoon).

    • @thenumberofthebeast2

You literally didn’t even pay attention to at least 5 minutes of this did you? His parents used to have the last name of Gold, until they changed it to Gould. Which the speaker clearly has no issue differentiating or pronouncing. You sound so incredibly pretentious it’s not even funny. Clearly this man has great interest in Glenn and has a fondness for his life and his work.
